[X] 6 Phaser Banks (Type V) [Damage: 32] [60% Coverage] [Cost: 129]

Guys, help me fix my budget

Spend less on ship components

No

Don't forget there's still the torpedos to go. if we have 2 tubes aft- perhaps not the rapids, but what about the prototype next gen standards? that should fill that rear blind spot nicely.

Edit - found the table:

ComponentImplementationCostReal CostEffectivenessUnknownsIf TakenImplementation Schedule
Type-4 Photon LauncherPrototype (+25% Cost)4512 Average/36 BurstStandard: 2270
Type-1 Photon LauncherMature (-25% Cost)32.256 Average/18 BurstTech Matured
Type-1 Rapid LauncherStandard121218 Average/54 BurstMature: 2260

The type 4's are a nice boost in damage, while still being cheaper than the rapid. I'm planning on voting for 2 rapids FORE and 2 T4 AFT for a total cost of 34, burst damage of 180 and an average damage of 60.

If the 10 T5 is chosen and we chose this for torpedoes, it'll be up to 183. I hope Starfleet decides the cost is worth it.
I've realised that when I think of the cost, I look back at previous ships with no idea how much the Federation has expanded. How can we know what 30 years ago would be an extremely expensive ship, would now only be 'average' cost based on a GDP percentage?

I'd imagine that given we live in a post Klingon war world even if overall GDP hasn't grown too much the acceptable cost for starship armament has risen quite a bit. At least for non-specialist ships.

There's no reason to worry, the Federation Temporal Officers that run the SanFran shipyards will build banger after banger no matter what happens.

Because our ship is so beefy, we can afford a few dead angles. It won't be that difficult to turn to fire if any enemies try to stay outside the line of fire. Maybe our shields take a blast before we turn, but they can handle it.

With the extra engines, I'm good with 6. Especially when we can't even fire all of them at once.

We have the manoeuvrability to deal with the blindspots

Please forgive the terrible MSPaint quality, but the rollbar's been bugging me and I wanted to articulate how I think it should've been done.

Rather than the big spike sticking out of the engineering hull with a coathanger on top, having it connect to the saucer and then having bracing connecting the nacelles all the way down to the engineering hull, it feels a lot more stable that way and gives it a pleasing ring configuration that probably has Vulcans feeling a mixture of smugness and dismay at the poor aping of their own designs.

So close to circular nacelle perfection yet so far.

I start to feel a little bad that we all got so excited to make the ship feel different that weve given the QM the challenge of making the pride of the fleet not look like a ship they kitbashed to show up in three frames of one of the movies.

Like the design is really fun but also I just wonder what it would have looked like with just nacelles, or possibly having a mirrored bar on the bottom? Almost kinda playing with it being a vulcan/earth hybrid ship?

I much prefer the current implementation to that, that's just way too many struts. I actually really like how it turned out.

Also just to be clear my position with this is that to fit a heavy cruiser design we either need to pick heavy on the phasers or heavy on torpedoes; not a lackluster mix of the two. I think the ships mission serves best as a heavy phaser ship, striking anything that tries to get too close to other ships while carrying torpedoes as a burst reserve. I am willing to be persuaded the other way around but please we cannot go for both; and we dont need both.

Also I would love if we could go all in on the anchor idea and give this thing insane sensors, for both awacs and science abilities.

I think the design would look a bit more attractive if it had struts coming across from the secondary hull/base of the strut tower to the sides, certainly a bit more stable if nothing else.

To be honest, given the cost differential I wouldn't mind sticking 2x type 4 launchers up front (assuming they come as singles by default) and 1x at the rear, it'd give us a decent alpha (72, compared to the 90 torpedo alpha the Excalibur gets) and rear capability (36, vs 18 for the Excalibur) for about 3 cost more than a single rapid fire is (15 vs 12).

@Sayle just to check, the type 4 comes as a single rather than a double by default?

My initial thought was also a mirrored bar, but it attaches very awkwardly to the secondary hull. Might slap one on anyway and get general vibes on it as an option.

Yeah, the torpedoes come as singles.
