I'll be honest, considering this is humanity's first true exploration vessel, it seems better to have the ability to actually adapt the ship to unforeseen circumstances, not just research them. And being able to do larger scale repairs, or even (very) minor refits as needed means the NX class can actually operate longer away from sol.

Remember, this ship isn't being built in the TOS or TNG era, where starfleet kinda of knows what to expect. We're in basically space wild west, starfleet doesn't even exist yet and humanity has no freaking clue what is out there. Having the boosted likelihood to at least limp back home to puzzle out what happened is far better than having the facilities on hand to know exactly what is about to kill you.

The NX already has science labs, the option explicitly says double up, and since the NX doesn't already have a workshop I have to vote for it.

Yeah, the previous arguments are right about that stuff, and also we're putting several prototype systems on this iirc, on top of a new basic shape for a ship

Generalist build, go!

My two credits:

A ship this goddamned expensive has absolutely no business being a "utility ship". That's a job we give to something like the Zheng He class if we actually need it, which we don't right now given our fleet and extrasolar holdings are so small. This is an explorer, and it should be equipped for exploration. If we need to convert our labs to extra storage space during the Earth-Romulan war, we can do that quickly at the outset of war.

Given that Trip was able to keep Enterprise running perfectly fine without this canonically, I don't want to see any pearl-clutching about how we absolutely have to take the utility space or we're doomed, DOOOOMED. In my view we should squeeze as much scientific value out of this vessel as we can during its first exploratory cruise, especially as this ship has to serve as an ambassador for Earth. Showing we've dedicated a lot of our space to science labs helps to broadcast our intentions as peaceful explorers.

The computer core will increase our Science score significantly whilst at this point only fractionally increasing the cost of the ship, so we should take it. If people really do want the engineering space, and I predict they will due to SV's lust for this sort of thing, then the computer core is a good way to offset it.
What role should a cruiser have if not a multi-role "utility" one? This is the only fast, long range class we have and will be responding to disasters on our colonies, assisting Frieghters in distress, fighting pirates and potentially defending against hostile powers. A multi-role "utility" vessel is exactly what Starfleet needs at the moment.

I mean, the actual nature of the ship is in question here. From the update: "The question is really down to whether you want the NX to be a utility cruiser or more of a science ship."

Are we a pre-federation explorer or are we some kind of missionless, overarmed patrol ship.
What do you mean by missionless? Or by overarmed?

This vessel has many missions: responding to crisis and disasters on our extra solar colonies, assisting freighters in distress, etc.

As for being well armed, the universe is a Hobbesian place and this vessel will be our first and best defense against the hostile forces that must inevitably exist.

This makes complete sense tbh.

The discussion has convinced me to vote for the engineering workshop.

While science is my preference, I won't be too bothered if workshop wins, though in that case I hope we take the next opportunity to make a more science focused ship in the future

It already has science labs, may as well round it out if it's currently space Wild West
