On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

You guys think making the Raven gate would take us to 10 standing with them maybe? Could give some good reward since they are the major port hold in our area.
The gate is guaranteed to get us up to standing 10, we're at 9 now and the gate reward is +1 so that will hit 10. The only theory I've seen about what the reward could be is -1 turn to Ulthuan orders, which is kinda meh when we have so much favour to spend to speed up orders and we don't even use ulthuan ingredients.

Or, heck. Maybe we just inspire the brana to make their own literature.

Their culture is still so young and unformed in many areas that a budding form of literature could help ensure connectivity between the "original" brana hold and the new one they plan to make.

I'm not sure about specific sizes for a kings retinue but soulcake said we can go up to about 300 safely:

I'm not sure I'd support going all the way up to 300 but I certainly wouldn't mind going larger than 120, especially if it let us assign the guard to permanent duties rather than the adhoc system of sending them off to do random things.
Permanent duties go against the spirit of the Hearthguard IMO. Like, it's one thing for them to go out and help those in need (i.e. helping rangers hunt some new beasty, aiding in the creation of a new settlement) but a permanent position by necessity is a statement of intent that whoever we're helping can't handle things on their own. It's the difference between helping and doing things for them.

The only permanent job they should have is guarding Snorri, because no-one else is contracted to do it, it's their job.

That could easily change as we actually learn about Ulthuani ingredients. For example, the Fire Bird feathers could turn out to be incredible for Valayan and related runes after we do the research.

The firebird feather sounds like an upgrade to MVitality or other regen runes most likely. Which is good cause we want a regen banner, we just need to shake some Runelords until MVitality falls out.

Important part here.

We are still in AP hell. We have other better, and more relevantly local targets for any AP slack we get.

Heck, we have not even tried to study any of the gifts the Ancestors gave us yet. I discount the gromril chains from that since we didn't really need to study the given example to make our own.

To be clear, I don't think -1 to ulthuan orders would be completely useless, I just don't think it would be worth spending actions to get. Especially since I view us hitting 10 standing as being inevitable for all the holds in Norsca. We are going to get an additional 1 standing with Ravensvake at some point just as a side effect of doing something we want to anyway. While we might use ulthuan ingredients more in the future by the time that future comes we're likely to have the 10 standing. So I don't see it as worth it to spend actions to hit 10 standing earlier.

And when exactly are we going to be buying all of these regents with such necessity that we must have a -1 on the wait time? There will always be more opportunities for Ravsnvake Standing. Even if Gromril chain doesn't raise it.

Firebird feathers is 2 AP. It may well be very efficient to research it, as it may give back progress on the Valayan runes.

Studying the ancestor's gifts isn't even something that's on the list for us to do, I believe.

If FIrebird feathers turn out to be particularly valuable for Valayan runes, we may want to order them in advance of completing the Valayan commission.

Wonder if the dawi use the reproductive organs of enemies they've drenged in their runic works. I mean, sure hearts or brains work best, but a troll's genitals is also a vital organ, yes? Or are there cultural taboos regarding such?

Unlimited Pocket Troll Tongue Works! *It proceeds to rain troll tongues from the skies like hail*
Somewhere, somewhen, Snorri shudders and doesn't know exactly why.

So, thoughts about learning Alchemy before we finish Understanding MPurification? It might give Snorri insights on how it works. It is also possible that it won't. I do think it would be a good idea to have at least 1 action of progress in Understanding it before we go into Alchemy though.

Alchemy seems like a long-term ambition to me, partly because it necessarily entails learning Elfese first and partly because I suspect Snorri won't acquire a full understanding of the subject on the same turn as he finishes emptying all the book stores. See the bit in the action description about learning and understanding taking far longer, the fact that the final sub-action involves hunting for books that haven't even made it across the sea yet, etc. Learning alchemy will probably take place gradually over the course of several decades, just like Snorri's general magical education happens gradually as Valma sends him new translated books. I would rather have him research the purification rune first and see if the things he learns there inform his understanding of alchemy as he studies it afterwards.
