Direct Intervention pt. 1
"Where are you?" you snap, bouncing out of your bed and transforming. Mami's a heartbeat behind you, golden radiance filling the room.

"My house! I-it's on fire!"

What?

What?

Oriko wouldn't.

She would, wouldn't she.

Mami's already throwing open the window, and you move behind her as she swings outside. "Sayaka, we're on our way!" Mami calls as she bounds up to the roof. A moment later, golden ribbons drop down for you.

"Homura!" you bark, one hand looping through the ribbons. Your other hand slams the window shut behind you even as the ribbons shorten, hauling you up to the roof to stand beside Mami.

"I heard. I'm watching Madoka right now," Homura replies. Her mental voice is calm and unhurried, but there's nevertheless an undercurrent of worry that she doesn't quite manage to hide.

"Right. I think you'd better stay there," you reply, before switching mental channels to Mami and Madoka. Mami's already leaping towards the next roof, and you're hard on her tail. "Madoka, don't worry. Mami and I are on the way to help Sayaka."

"Please hurry!" Madoka says urgently. You get the impression that she's sitting at her bed wringing her hands.

"Of course, Madoka," Mami replies, landing darting around a vent on the rooftop with practiced ease.

"Sayaka, still there?" you say.

"I- there's sirens," she replies. You can hear the sirens of the firetrucks too, rapidly dopplering as you and Mami push yourselves as hard as you can move.

"We'll be there soon, OK? Stay close to the floor to avoid the smoke," you soothe. In the midst of a roll after your landing, you pull out one of the marbles of Grief you've been collecting, and it puffs away into a roiling cloud of Grief which you pull behind you. No sense not going in loaded for bear.

"Ok. Ok." You can tell Sayaka's struggling to stay calm.

You arrive before the firetrucks do, though not by much- they're maybe a minute or two behind you. From your landing point in the middle of the street, you can Sayaka's apartment blazing, fire gouting out of the windows. It doesn't look it's it's spread all that far yet, though the fire is, in your judgement, burning unnaturally fast- it shouldn't have reached this level of inferno without spreading further.

There's a magical presence on top of a nearby building, and your head swivels to look up. Mami follows your gaze.

You recognize the rather distinctive figure, lit as it is by the fire. A long, flowing white dress, topped by a peculiarly shaped hat.

Oriko nods regally down at the two of you, pivots, and calmly walks away.

... except, this time, it looks like some bastard shelled the entire forest.
Whoops!

Ait, going to be the first to suggest something that is probably wrong: What if Oriko DIDN'T start the fire? There may or may not be extenuating circumstances at work here.

Urgh. Why? What's her motive? We're SV, we might not be the best at it all the time, but it's our job to get the best end! What would a precog see that precludes that?

Can her precognition see what the result of wishes would be, or does QB interfere with that kind of thing? Maybe this is the scenario which results in the strongest/most sane Sayaka...?

Alright, testing a vote.

[X] Telepathy Oriko.
-[X] "What the hell are you doing?"
[X] Sayaka needs help, get in there.
[X] Talk to Mami.
-[X] "We need to save Sayaka, now, before she makes a wish. Are your ribbons fireproof?"

At a guess, this is to make Sayaka contract for something other than healing powers. Having a healer arrayed against her is not something she'd want.

Err... Mami isn't totally against Sayaka making a wish, so talking about that with her seems a bit... umm.. odd?

[X] Sayaka needs help, get in there.
-[x] Ask Mami if her ribbons are fire proof.
-[x] On that note... grief isn't flammable... is it?

Even telepathy can be a distraction and really we should be keeping Sayaka on the line. We can chat with Oriko later. Let's focus on Sayaka for now and try to limit as much collateral as possible.

Alternately, she's trying to get Sayaka to make a wish period.

I mean, without something like this happening, do you think we'd let her wish for something without either warning her off of it or finding another way to get what she would have been wishing for?

It does beg the question of why she wants Sayaka to make a wish though. Witch farming? Or the recognition that (assuming we've been labeled enemies already), sooner or later Sayaka will contract to help us?

Witch farming would make little sense. She could get other people to contract that we aren't protecting and get them to witch out with much less hassle.

If I recall, Increasing the misfortune of girls is also a factor in increasing their potential as magical girls.

Could Oriko be trying to increase Sayaka's potential?

Is that from one of the spinoffs? Only thing I remember from the series is importance being a factor in potential, hence Homura tying a timeline's viability to Madoka's well being increasing Madoka's potential.

I dunno. According to Episode 11, PMMM, potential for a magical girl is determined by the misfortune she's destined to carry. Since Oriko is interfering with that, she may be manipulating Sayaka's potential.

Or I'm wrong and this is nothing but a distraction for what Oriko is really after.

Potential is also referred to as 'Karmic Potential' by the Incubators at certain points. Madoka got so much potential because, as the center of Homura's wish, her misfortunes from the previous timelines were getting added onto her.
