Nova Prospekt pt. 7
"Haaaah," Kirika says, squirming around and slithering sideways off Oriko's lap so that she's mostly lying on the sofa, head still on Oriko's lap and feet propped up on the seat cushion next to you. "This is nice."

You chuckle quietly, giving her a grin.

"I was just thinking that," you admit. "Anyway, I gotta ask. Do you guys have any idea what you want to do with the mansion when you move out?"

"I was considering selling it - and all the contents," Oriko says, stroking Kirika's hair gently. "There's precious little here to hold nostalgia for me, and this place is... tainted."

You purse your lips. "Are people still vandalising this place?"

"No," Oriko says, shaking her head. "Children have short memories."

Kirika rolls over, burying her face against Oriko's belly and hugging the taller girl, but not before you see the flash of a smug grin flickering across her face.

"That's good, at least," you say, smiling. You doubt that Oriko doesn't know whatever it is Kirika did.

"Mmm," Oriko hums lightly. "Will you be staying much longer, Sabrina? I was thinking of brewing some tea, after our excellent breakfast." She gives Kirika a fond smile.

"Ah... probably not that much longer," you say. "I wouldn't want to impose on your hospitality for too long."

"Excellent," Oriko says. "Enough time to make some tea, then. And you aren't imposing on our hospitality at all."

"... And, uh..." you trail off, before shaking your head and deciding to just go for it. "You know that I don't... actually have amnesia, right? I don't have memories of before I woke up in the alleyway, and the tea is lovely, but I don't actually have memory problems on a day to day basis."

Oriko shrugs delicately, completely unconcerned.

"You do not need a reason to enjoy good tea any more than I require one," Oriko says, gently nudging Kirika's head off her lap. "I'll be back shortly."

Kirika makes sad, whiny noises as Oriko rises smoothly to her feet and heads to the kitchen, and then curls up like a cat around the spot Oriko was. Citrine eyes peek at you from behind a curtain of black hair, and Kirika grins at you.

You raise an eyebrow at her.

"Just happy," Kirika says, and waves an arm vaguely in the air. "I mean... I'm pretty happy with life. Never really thought I'd be here today, you know?"

"I know what you mean, yeah," you agree with a soft smile. "Just... Mami."

"Oriko," Kirika agrees with a happy sigh.

You lapse into an easy silence, Kirika perking up at the clinking noises from the kitchen. And you take the moment to reach out by telepathy.

"Hey, Yuma? Are you awake?" you say.

"Nnnnnnnnoooo?" Yuma says. "Yuma is asleep!"

She sounds bright, completely awake, and up to mischief.

"Ah, well, I was wondering if I could speak to Miss Sakura's secretary to set up a breakfast meeting today," you say cheerfully. "But if Yuma's asleep, that's fine."

"Ah, no! I can take a message!" Yuma's voice shifts, trying for a more formal, businesslike tone. "When would you like to schedule that appointment?"

"About... forty five minutes from now, if possible?" you say. "Miss Sakura has indicated interest in speaking to me on important matters, and I equally have matters to speak to her about." You pause, and grin to yourself. "Does Kyouko's secretary have her own secretary now?"

Kirika raises an eyebrow at you, but is rapidly distracted as Oriko bustles out of the kitchen with a steaming teapot on a tray.

"A meeting in forty five minutes!" Yuma says brightly. "Yes, Yuma's secretary answers the phone when Yuma's asleep."

"I see," you say gravely. "Well, I'll see you soon."

"See you!" Yuma says.

You accept a cup of green tea from Oriko with a grateful smile, blowing delicately on it and inhaling the faintly savoury fragrance.

"Thank you for the tea," you say. "And, ah, I'll be out of your hair in about half an hour."

"You aren't imposing in the slightest, but if you have business to attend to, by all means," Oriko says, nodding.

"Yeah," you say, taking a sip. "Thanks."

Kirika finally deigns to sit up so that she can accept a cup of tea from Oriko, drinking with surprising decorum. She's probably been taking lessons from Oriko, at a guess, and Oriko herself seems content to sip the tea in genteel silence, eyes closed to enjoy it properly.

You take a moment to think, and to reflect, and you find your thoughts circling your past actions. Metabombing Mami, and the pain you'd caused her. You went into it knowing what could happen, but you'd... misjudged how bad it could be, and only now is Mami recovering from it. And your thoughts turn, inevitably, to Oriko's predictions. Homura.

Homura, who would break if she found out about how her looping only made Madoka's potential greater, winding the spindle of realities tighter about her. More threads to tie her to abandoned universes, more reason for Kyuubey to hound her. But-

Really?

You can't help but wonder. Homura's... Homura's stronger than that, you can't help but think. She's one of the strongest people you know. And you can't help but wonder how Oriko can be so certain, when she's admitted that you can completely defy her visions. When she knows you've defied her visions. And even if she's shaking free of the fatalism and the reliance on her visions, it's not something that's gone quite that quickly, is it?

Oriko could be mistaken.

... can you risk it?

You... don't know, and that's the real problem here. What Oriko said, what she predicted, is filtered through her worldview. But can you risk as dire an outcome when it's Homura on the line?

You don't know.

You might have to. You're not sure what Kyuubey's up to. You might have to break it to Homura just to prevent her from being broken by the Incubator. When, how, if... is not an easy decision.

You sigh quietly, the tea suddenly tasting flat.

Oriko glances your way, sea-green eyes concerned. You give her a shrug and what you hope is a reassuring smile.

"Planning for the future?" she asks.

"Mmmhm," you agree. "It's... well, tricky to juggle."

Oriko chuckles quietly, taking another sip of her tea.

"Welcome to the club," she says, raising the cup. "I see your hair has turned white from the worrying already."

You sigh, rolling your eyes. Yeah, that's probably true. The conversation lapses, and you continue thinking on it, your thoughts going around in circles. But in the end, you don't really have any particular insight into this at the moment.

Instead, you pull Aurora out of your pocket, holding the Clear Seed up to the light. Kirika peeks at it, clearly interested, but doesn't say anything, simply observing instead. You...

Well, you still don't really know what you're doing. But something happened when you channelled your hope into the Clear Seed, so you'll keep trying. But perhaps not just that.

Emotions.

A Grief Seed is drowning in despair, the last moments of a magical girl before she turned into a Witch. A Clear Seed is... empty. It soaks up hope. So... what about other things?

You stroke a finger over the transparent crystal, magic gathering under your fingertip as you try and focus on the past day. The time you'd spent with your friends, with Mami. The joy of the talking to her, of seeing her so happy, of being with her.

Something flickers within the Clear Seed in response, there and gone again before you really have time to notice it. Your eyes widen, and you try to repeat that, calling to mind this morning. Mami, again, the simple intoxicating delight of seeing her happy and confident. Talking to Homura and Sayaka and Madoka and Hitomi and Nagisa, to the time you're spending right now with Oriko and Kirika.

... nothing.

There's no reaction this time, and you purse your lips, frowning at the Clear Seed.

"Something wrong, Sabrina?" Oriko asks.

"... hrm," you say, scowling. You kind of want to tell her, maybe get her thoughts on it, but you're also leery of doing that where Kyuubey might hear. And yet you don't have enough time to form a privacy bubble. "... keep that question in mind and ask me again when we have a bit more time to talk?"

Oriko gives you a thoughtful look and nods slowly.

"Not enough time to speak properly right now," she says, half-questioning.

"Yeah," you agree. "Unfortunately."

"I understand," Oriko says, nodding again, and you're pretty sure she does. She gets the paranoia almost as much as Homura does.

Heh.

It's funny, but Oriko and Homura would probably be fast friends, had things turned out differently.

Ah, well.

You push yourself to your feet. "That said..."

"Let us see you out," Oriko says with a smile. She sets her teacup aside and rises to her feet, Kirika hopping up and taking her arm.

"Thank you for having me here today," you say, beaming at them.

They wave you off, and you're soon winging over Mitakihara, soaring westwards to Kasamino. To meet up with Kyouko, who... well, you'd jokingly set up the Yuma-as-her-secretary. She probably doesn't mind a harmless joke.

Hmhm. Shorter update today, I'm afraid. Busy-ish week.

What's the "I don't actually have memory problems" prompted by? I don't see the connection to the tea offer.

Was this meant to be "Lichbombing" or aren't I parsing this correctly?

Huh, I'd never heard of "memory aid tea" before this. Probably why I missed the implications.

she made that comment once

And so it wasn't so much implied as it was explicitly stated. :V

Which, really, is very appropriate. PMMM is where the subtext becomes overtext.

(It has been years, though.)

You purse your lips. "Are people still vandalising this place?"

Kirika... what did you do...

Should I feel sorry for those kids?

Or not?

"I know what you mean, yeah," you agree with a soft smile. "Just... Mami."

"Oriko," Kirika agrees with a happy sigh.
"Yeah... Mami."

"Oriko."

"Mami."

"Oriko."

"Mami Mami."

"Oriko Oriko Oriko."

"MamiMamiMamiMamiMamiMami-"

"Orikorikorikorikorikoriko-"

"MAMIMAMIMAMIMAMIMAMI!"

"ORIKORIKORIKORIKORIKO!"

"MAMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII"

"ORIKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

"MA-"

"Kirika!"

Oriko plops down on Kirika's lap.

Kirika blinks, a slight blush on her cheeks as she looks up into Oriko's eyes.

"... I win."

"... Can't argue with that. I'll bring Mami next time."

Continuing the "stop Kyuubey from ruining everything" thread:

Talking to Kyuubey doesn't work.
Ignoring Kyuubey won't work, according to prophecy.
I proposed building a Mitakihara-wide memory field, but the idea did not get traction.

Can we... kill Kyuubey?

Oriko's new power is "visions of the present".
Can she find all the Kyuubeys? and Kyuubey's base? and Kyuubey's spaceship or whatever?
And can we then kill them all from timestop?

One of the Asunaro powers apparently is to analyze an enemy and learn its weaknesses.
Can we call Kyuubey for a chat and have Sayaka learn all its weaknesses?
(Presumably from within a privacy field, and after resolving the witchbomb.)

If we kill all the Kyuubeys on Earth, what consequence does that bring?
Do they wipe out all life on Earth in retaliation?
Or do we just get a new Kyuubey a few weeks later, once they realize the old one died?

-----

I have a theory that Kyuubey has an equivalent of the Prime Directive.
The reason it doesn't lie is that lying is forbidden under Kyuubey law.
The reason it hides all meguca activity is that revealing magic is also forbidden.
The reason it never fights back when attacked: perhaps harming Earthlings is also forbidden.

So I've got this image of Kyuubey being sent to Earth and given all these rules, and it says:
"Okay, fine, I'll obey the letter of the law as much as I have to, but I'll cause as many Witchouts as I can, subject to constraints."
And the Kyuubeys back on the home planet never realize how much their laws aren't protecting us.

Is this realistic? I dunno. I wish we could ask Kyuubey some questions and find out.

-----

You might argue that killing Kyuubey is out of scope for the adventure.
But here's the thing: our mission is to break the system.
Breaking the system will require some sort of solution to the Kyuubey problem.
If talking to it doesn't work, maybe killing it is our actual life's purpose.

My headcanon is that Kyubey gives wishes because they are necessary to create energy, but every other constraint we observe is from wishes. For example, someone finding out that he lied to their friends, and wishing that Kyubey couldn't lie.

Even if we can kill all Kyubeys, I don't think we should. The grief has to go somewhere eventually, no one other than me thinks we can get rid of it by turning it into energy, and the heat death of the universe is still a problem that will eventually need fixed (and therefore is part of fixing everything).

Can she find all the Kyuubeys? and Kyuubey's base? and Kyuubey's spaceship or whatever?

See, this is a situation in which we should test the extent to which we are capable of producing GRBs. We could theoretically accidentally its planet, that should work.

The reason it hides all meguca activity is that revealing magic is also forbidden.
It wasn't forbidden in Tart Magica; if we take that as canon compliant, magic wasn't hidden at all, I think.

The way I rationalize KB's methods is that it has to work with this hazy concept called 'Potential'...

(Potential... for what? For suffering? For making an impact on others? Both? Both and other sorts of Potential?)

... And with observed data.

- KB lies: meguca feel cheated at KB and feels less responsibility and thus despair at their own actions. Less energy profit.
- KB "doesn't lie": meguca trust KB, giving KB more chances to manipulate them, plus meguca feel more responsible for their own actions, more regret, more despair. More profit.

Thus, KB "doesn't lie".

I would bet for every action KB does that doesn't seem to make sense to us, it would make sense if we had all the data KB has at its disposal (handwavium required to justify only contracting girls, since it's really because it's a magical girl show). It's all a probability game to it.

I won't deny the possibility of prime directives or other causes (like Wishes) for KB's behavior, but I favour this explanation.

The joy of the talking to her, of seeing her so happy, of being with her.

So I'm thinking.... love? That and/or companionship. It flickered when we gave emotions related to being WITH Mami but not with hanging out with our other friends, or of seeing Mami happy. The only difference between those two is that while hanging out with Mami and friends are both countering loneliness being with Mami is a deeper thing? What with her showing Sabrina she has more to life then her mission. While merely thinking on the joy of seeing Mami happy does not have that extra facet of companionship.

Basically we need to feed the seed feelings of being loved, cherished, held, understood, told your never going to be alone etc etc.

Kirika would be GREAT at this!

only like 5% chance that if the witch dewitches and cuddles Oriko! : P

So, Oriko is definitely doing better.

She accepted to being friends.

She has Kirika to keep her honest and not bakctracking into fatalism/how hypotheticall it could all be a ruse.

She keeps being self-aware.

She showed herself to see everyone else not liking her as a problem, something that should change.

She's being forward and insistent on having friends (well, us for now) over and hanging out. Man, if we didn't have a bajillion things to do, I could see Sabrina just spending the afternoon (sans lunch) hanging out with O&K (as a timeskip).

So, when do we get our BEFRIENDER card? I think we've earned it.

Yeah, this was pretty interesting, because I wasn't expecting any particular result at all. Let alone that one.

For myself I don't think this was love at work, not exactly. We showed her our love for Mami today too. Instead I'm wondering if something in particular from yesterday resonated with Aurora personally.

I'm given to note here that Aurora's barrier was a forum. Even if she's only SB in ersatz as a joke, there's signs of her being a netizen. And yesterday was the day we went on IRC for the first time.

...Clearly, this can only mean the proper answer to wake up Aurora is to get into heated debate with the Tokyo Council. Because nothing gets the attention of a forumite like a flamewar. :V

...

Okay, more seriously, this does make me even more curious how Aurora will react to flying, since she did have a form with her own wings and flight.

And if her character really is derived from being an SBina of some kind, however warped, I wonder if she'd take to geeking out over sci-fi weaponry and gadgetry.

(And as a fellow probably-netizen, I wonder how she and HN Elly would react to each other if we tried to dewitch both of them. Though, alas, I get the impression that HN Elly has probably already been used up by Homura and given to Kyuubey.)

----------------------------

Really not sure how the vote should go, beyond starting with the Firnvote. Can't see much beyond firnvote --> meet and get food --> talk to Kyouko about her stuff --> ??? --> metabomb. (first few points of the metabomb structure, not all of it in that update)

metabomb structure thoughts:
-I'd rather begin after an update, to gauge the mood and construct things approproately
-We don't like that she feels obligated to us... but if we can't change that then she should know more about who she's giving that debt to.
-"we don't want want her (to feel like she's?) forced or pressured into anything, especially not on behalf of some all-knowing manipulative asshole."
-privacy field
-we woke up in an alley with no knowledge about ourselves... but our mind was packed full of things we couldn't possibly have known, and some that no one could have.
-not sure if our amnesia was induced magically, or if we were just made from scratch then and there. We have some guesses as to who did it and how, but that's not it's the important bit.
-What's important is that whatever gave us that knowledge us did it by showing us what was going to happen over the next month, had we never existed. As if we had read a book or watched an anime.

Alas, I mostly have gut feeling here at the moment rather than concrete analysis of Kyouko's character.

why is there talk of bombing Kyouko? What purpose does this have?
First off: Thank you for asking. I sincerely mean that: Discussion has been much too lax on this topic so far.

To answer: I think @Kaizuki and @Onmur have their own ideas but for myself I can think of three points here:

1: Kyouko deserves to know. We know about her, she opened herself up to us, so she should know about us. Simple as that.
2: I believe that keeping this from Kyouko will go poorly. She doesn't like being lied to, and the longer this is kept secret, the more reason there is to ask why the hell we did so.
3: Given that we're open with most others we know --- even the Asunaro girls knows a little bit about our metaknowledge --- any significant interaction with everyone else who knows is more chance for things to spill accidentally.
3a: More time waiting also means more chance there is for Kyuubey to drop something on Kyouko like the "excellent actress" setup line he used on Mami. Which I think the omake on her perspective shows significantly aggravated things during the metabomb.

(Also, made an addendum to the above post: "We don't want want her (to feel like she's?) forced or pressured into anything, especially not on behalf of some all-knowing manipulative asshole.")

Metabombing Kyouko for the same reason we Metabombed Sayaka and Hitomi and Madoka, I think. Because they're Sabrina's friends.

As for an actual purpose...

Ah, yes, basically because friendship and truth.

As for an actual purpose, as in, an action that would become open to us due to Metabombing Kyouko, we miiiiight want in the future to talk about Yuma, like, a lot.

About Yuma being mistreated by her mother, and Yuma going to school, and Yuma possibly being taken into an actual household with actual responsible adults (her grandparents)... and we can't really go into all of it without admitting to the Metabomb. Or we could, but we would have to dance around it, and Kyouko would sniff something amiss.

I'm uncertain whether we should do this... as much as Yuma could use having an actual house with actual adults, this might risk the quasi sisterhood Yuma and Kyouko have and... well, it's complicated. But I feel we need to metabomb Kyouko if we're ever to open this topic.

You take a moment to think, and to reflect, and you find your thoughts circling your past actions. Witchbombing Mami, and the pain you'd caused her. You went into it knowing what could happen, but you'd... misjudged how bad it could be, and only now is Mami recovering from it.

Just a quick question but when did we witchbomb her? For the life of me I can't actually remember that happening. Only the lich and metabombs were dropped. In which chapter did we end up telling her about it?

In general I support metabombing Kyouko, as long as it's done in such a way that we don't come off in any of the various ways we've been trying to avoid coming off to her, because I could definitely see that working in a way similar to how the metabomb went with Mami -- provoking all of her fears surrounding us in the process of owning up. Unlike Mami, it is fully possible that Kyouko would not give us an opportunity to reconcile afterwards. The resultant situation would be... potentially worse than status quo ante bellum.

I'm not convinced that's easy or possible thus far.

On the other hand, continuing without metabombing her is a surefire way to shoot ourselves in the foot on her front long-term.

If I have to draw up a plan for it I'll do it. Probably end up requesting the vote be pushed back, though, my finals week is coming up.

Re: Muramasa: you seem to have some exaggerated ideas about the metabomb. I suggest you go re-read the section where we metabombed Mami and ask yourself if it was the content of the bomb itself that caused what happened -- the answer is no, btw. Likewise, the delivery to Sayaka probably could have been an awful lot better.

The chief issue in Kyouko's case is that it implies we know an awful lot more about her past than she might have thought, which might cast doubt on our intentions regarding her.

Maybe Aurora does need different sort of (good?) feelings...

What would happen if Sabrina and Mami simulateneously Soul Snuggled and channeled their emotions into Aurora at the same time?
