So, first of all I would like to take this post to apologize to everyone.

I acted in a manner that was completely intolerable, even after calling out others on said behavior.

This was terrible, and I am sorry.

I have a friend who has been playing catch up for a few months, but he had some very salient points about what went wrong talking to her. I believe it was something along the lines of "what did sabrina want out of this conversation" getting drowned out.

I will probably resume my scheduled lurking, but I am glad you are still writing @Firnagzen this quest has brought me much joy over the years.

Cosplay for everyone.

Our enchantment goals now include animated ad-hoc cosplay props - for the World population? Starting with "I can't believe they're not feline!" sensory integrated nekomimi? The feature would hardly implement auditory superpowers, Sabrina would understand that gifting the option to first-hand experience fluffy ears is a step towards a better world.
Also, been saving up a discussion for the vote...

Rionna is simply the anti-Sabrina "savior." This is pretty much point-by-point in the following ways?
# Considers herself a Victim of Circumstance.
# No higher power.
# No internal debate.
# Does everything herself.
# Justice by inflexible thinking, enforced by murder.
# Painful memories.
# ...And she lives without hugs.
# No allies.

What can we do if we understand the story in this way?

What about Rionna's POV though? Analyze to create a consistent explanation of why she acts? (not that we can know ATM, but go using her pattern.)

Is Rionna following simple Revolutionist political norms?
Hate and reject Kyuubey perfectly, all the time.
If one were to not put too fine a point on it, Rionna hates that we are trying to work against the system from inside the system. We have friends, live our lives, explore our magic, and act in all sorts of ways that a Magical Girl should. She wants Revolution Now.
Sabrina isn't worth talking to, since Sabrina isn't a bitter radical like her.
Rionna rejects everyone else too, unless she is using them. The justification is that Kyuubey will always win if his agenda isn't rejected 100%.
She is an extremist, in addition to being selfish and not having a razor sharp wit. Her politics are reactionary, "let's go back to life before the Incubators." She just doesn't want to understand.

Rionna represents a position in the global ecosystem of Magical Girls. In a certain niche, she has been that Alpha Predator the others rely upon. Her attacks define the morality threshold of the world, because whenever a grief spreader arises, Rionna buys a ticket to go kill them.
We absolutely need to get that job away from Rionna.
There are two basic ways to go. Apprentice, or compete. Apprentice would stop the murders faster.

Her social position is going to get her killed. She is in a warlord culture. In handing out death sentences, two negatives accrue to Rionna. First, survivors of the criminals and/or victims she has killed. Second, fear from her peers. No one stays at the top without support, because in a warlord system the overall stability of the world is not anyone's concern. There is no justice past the reach of one's power, because no one will agree to exchange for it. If at any time another sovereign decides to plot against her and preempt Rionna's existence, they have no censure to face. If a lone girl with a grudge wants to try her luck at assassination, nobody else is too concerned with that. In practice, this means she has duels come to her. And the odds of never losing one duel, no matter how many times this happens, do not look very nice.

Basically, Rionna has been living on a timer since she started acting as the head vigilante. If she wants to succeed at her secret project, either she needs more backup to preserve her life, or she needs to get out of the spotlight. Failing those, she really needs to get project completion sooner rather than later. There may not be a later for her.

That is before the factoring in that she has already failed, unless we join in.

Rionna has admitted to three separate projects as long term goals:

###{REDACTED} ,

###Grief cleansing

###De-witching.

The secret project is way more important to her, by interpreting her conversation blockage. Of course she could be lying, but that would seem to have been better to use another way, so I think "It's none of your business" is covering for a real item.

Of course, trying to take our soul for whatever, allows us the choice to make it our business. Staying cooped up at home was her comfort zone action, but she chose to confront Sabrina anyway.

We should feel well that she keeps a mention of grief cleansing, because it will be significant someday, even to her. That item isn't over.

If her secret is not the other two, could leave -

resurrection for the normally departed,
resurrection from death by her powers,
recovery of personality in a resurrected person,
recovery of personality in a Shade,
breaking a Contract to become mortal
Any others?

We could try to upset her in a non-combat direction.
There are a few other overload lines we can embark upon. Let's get an assortment together, and consider which ones are best as part of a strategy?

[] Where is her payment? Shame her over that lack. - Rionna needs something. What did she bring to trade with? A soul is valuable, and even the Devil offers some price for it.

There may be only one valuable skill in Rionna, but we really did not find out. So far we can confirm three major abilities. Soul vision, and Shade lobotomy, Shade control. Oh, make that four, (thanks for the lol @Kaizuki ), highlighting the {Cider} skill. Can she do anything else we would trade for? Can she re-connect a soul to a body? Communicate with witches or soul gems or the mortal dead? Soul kinesis? Does she have fine control? Information transfer abilities? Soul Healing? Or is it as I imagine, we are talking to another powerhouse locked in by her build and her mission. Perhaps Rionna has not worked out her derived abilities at all?

[] What is Rionna's bad opinion of us based on, anyway? Who told her to insult and hate us like this?

[] There is an Iowa Group out there. When is Rionna going to make an example out of them, too? Is there even anything coherent about her policy at all? Or is she just another raider of their stripe, collecting powers?

[] How many years has Rionna been at it now? She should give up then. What she has right here is failure, a long flight home, and a long lifetime to think about how she spit on her own chances. We think she is the only living girl with Soul magic. She knows for certain we are the first girl with real Grief powers. The only moves here are to make a deal, or fully give up on her dream.

[] We want to share her patrol against Grief Spreaders.

IIRC, there are conditions on her Secret Project. It must be something "everybody wants," and that "everybody has tried." While losing a person close to oneself must be super common amongst Magical Girls, I can name one thing that would be even more universal. The idea of quitting Magical Girl life and becoming the girl one used to be.

There is a possibility I wish to put forward:

[] Rionna is trying to reverse a Contract for someone else!

Implications that follow such a hypothesis -

we need to apply the knowledge over time. Knowing this fact isn't the full win.

I would think breaking a contract might not be possible, and in some way might not always be right for the individual girl. I am not considering it as a type of salvation Sabrina would attempt ATM.

All we need to do is convince Madoka, to be fair.
"I'm not wearing that."

"C'mon, please? You're nearly expies of each other."

"I don't know what an 'expy' is. No."

"Did I mention that your character is in love with Madoka's character? They end up living together, adopting a kid together, even sharing a bed together."

".... Gimme that."

*Later*

"Yay! Homura, we match! It's so great that Manoha and Fate are best friends, just like us!"

"Best... Friends?"

"Opps. I forgot to mention that Nanoha is extremely dense, didn't I."

Yeah, it's my head canon that Nanoha is like one of those dense harem protags, and doesn't realize that everybody is in love with her.

We should really get the gang together and watch Lyrical Nanoha together in-character.

@Firnagzen do you want us to make a vote? Or should we leave it to you?

As far as I know voting is reopened, but Firn is going to not be particularly subtle in the next update and we should work with whatever he provides from a nudging standpoint. People are just trying to relax and be silly to avoid the trench warfareness things were before.

    [x] Plan:
-[x] She'd be unwilling to give up her sister's shade and you think she might be equally unwilling to reveal that she has it.
-[x] You'll make a stab in the dark about her power's origin and use it as grounds for giving her a way out.
-[x] Make an offer that would let her keep her sister's shade without talking about it.
-[x] Note that, if she is holding her sister's shade, she's likely denying the ethical implications of her actions out of self-defense.
[x] She won't release her wraiths now, fine. And you won't deny her her home or safety. But would she really keep those souls trapped if it became unnecessary?
[x] You want Rionna to stop murdering people, and if any of her shades are suffering you want that stopped.
[x] But. But. You can't think of many ways a girl gets a power like Rionna's.
[x] If there are any shades that she needs to keep, and she doesn't want to explain who they are or why she needs them... you won't ask questions, and she'll have full access to your research network.
[x] Does that sound like what she needs?

-[X] Acknowledge that asking her to reject the powers of her Wish is a huge thing, and she probably had good reasons for seeking such power. Mention that even if we're unable to deliver fully, we'll still understand if she has a special shade or two she /cant/ release because its too important. That's something we'd obviously be fine with until a better solution appears even if we reject the idea of holding other hostiles and innocents in stasis.
-[X] If she doesn't want our help, fine, put that aside a moment. Acknowledge lack of detail to our promises. Bring out special Clear Seeds (happy-grief and quiescent ones, at least) , mention tests and ask opinion on results thus far. Is this at least any better than other attempts she's aware of? Can she do that at least that much considering she isn't going to get anything productive out of this trip otherwise?
[X] Show her the Clear Seed. Explain what she's seeing: the sheer capacity, the quiescent nature of the witch, the way it absorbs hope magic.
-[x] And this is just a stopgap measure to keep everyone's gem clean while we create a real solution.
[x] If she wants cleansing and dewitching, then the only way that it's going to be possible is by working with us.
-[x] As she's said, everybody's tried but nobody's been able to... until now.
--[x] And if there's something else she wants, we can make that possible, too.
---[X]No guarantees, obviously, we're powerful not omnipotent, but we can't negotiate when any attempt at finding out what she actually wants is stonewalled with variations of "None of your business/not giving up my power/your soul", the latter of which she has to know isn't going to happen.
[x] Okay. Then I guess thats it.
-[x]One thing, do you know anyone else I can contact with soul related abilities? Since you won't help me and I need input on it with my research team.
[x] Show her the Clear Seed. Explain what she's seeing: the sheer capacity, the quiescent nature of the witch, the way it absorbs hope magic.

Thats something we'd obviously be fine with until a better solution appears even if we reject the idea of holding other hostiles and innocents in stasis.

[X]In that case there's only one way left for us to avoid a fight.
-[X]I need to see some of your shades so I know they aren't suffering for myself.
-[X]Once I've confirmed that they aren't suffering, you invite me to your future hunts for Magical Girls. All of them. You let me know their crimes beforehand and the basis for your knowledge. You cease hunting normal people. You let me grant your targets the opportunity to take a clear seed and should they wish it, a free flight to Mitakihara in exchange for sinning no more.
-[X]If they reject the offer, their souls are yours. If they sin again in my territory their gems get separated from their bodies and their bodies cryogenically frozen. Or they end up prisoners of an associate of mine who controls buildings. If they sin again outside my territory their souls are yours.
-[x]If Riona asks why: A majority of her targets sound like people you would want to talk to anyways and this enables you to save more of their victims, compared to if you need to track the people she'd target down from scratch after sealing her gem in an anti-magic box and freezing her body. The problem is that as that as this conversation indicates, you suck at negotiation. You're hoping having her waiting in the wings will make this process easier.
-[x]In addition to my combat skills(I've got a recording of a sparring match I had with that building controller if you need a demonstration) to compensate for the increased difficulty, I am prepared to offer hypersonic transportation and cleansing should you accept these terms, and a clear seed after the first hunt we make together.
-[x]Any questions or do we have a deal?

Look at what clothes she made for herself when she became the devil. Some deeply buried part of Homura is certainly capable of wearing Fate's outfit. You just have to find a way to awaken this potential without having her become the devil along the way.

That's why I refuse to even consider raising the staple of Mahou Shoujo genre. Otherwise, I'd be arguing to show our Master Maid outfit and claim that it's our mid-season power-up costume.

But then I remember where Homura follows that train of thought.

Seriously, her Devil costume is godawful, no pun intended.

For after this whole shenanigans I like the idea of ranting at Homura since I feel that would kinda of in character for Sabrina at this point. The Sabrina mirrors the thread, and the threads hit a boiling up and just barely pulled back until recently. So Sabrina kinda having a ... moment makes sense. God knows I feel better after I bitch about work to my brother sometimes.

It also has to be at Homura since she's the only one cleared on EVERYTHING but the potential-bomb. You also have the degree of trust is shows us extending out to Homura. We've been trying to get Homura to trust us and its worked ... mostly aside from when her Madoka first agenda butts up against Sabrina's redemption agenda and compressed timelines (see Oriko etc). Just unilaterally extending our trust of Homura by showing we're comfortable spilling all of our concerns out like that is going to help. Since it shows even if Homura does not completely trust us - we completely trust Homura.

.... also if we build a boat we should do it in a basement.

Sayaka: ..... how are you getting it out?

OOOH Warehouse-kun!

I am worried that if we do anything like asking if there are any specific shades that Rionna wants to keep, or giving her an "out" that only allows her to keep one, based on our theory that one of them is her sister... that's going to be just as dangerous as asking her directly about her sister. Anything that requires her to identify which specific shade is important to her is likely to be something she sees as a threat.

Why a boat, though?

Did we ever show Mami our super maid costume?
...
We have not.

We need to do so.
... This is our very real failure!

To be honest, I've been hoping for some more Brinapiloting for this conv. There's only so much we can react to from this side. I think I tried asking for it at some point, but I wouldn't blame Firn for missing a post in a deluge of posts.

I'm gonna update my vote for now, since at the very least it should be a straight up upgrade from the previous one:

Added some lines with 'Doubt' instead of 'X' in them to say, I'm not certain about them, so they're not part of the vote, but I think they're something to think about.

[X] Brinapilot.
-[X] Regain patience.
-[Doubt] Keep insisting you want to help.
--[X] If Riona's patience stretches thin, intersperse secondary topics.
-[X] Dig at Riona's reasons.*
-[Doubt] Call Riona on her baiting. Still be the better woman.

[X] Offer and (ask Mami to) get refreshments. Don't leave the bubble nor stop talking.

[X] Answer:
-[X] It's not about taking away. Your goal is to give her, everyone, a chance to do better.
-[Doubt] Killing and using people's actual Souls. Nobody deserves that. Is this what she wants to be?

[X] (Brinapilot, don't just list terms.) Look for compromise.
-[X] No more killing.
-[X] You'll help fix her reason to 'need' an undead army. Then she'll release them.
--[X] Acknowledge exceptions:
---[X] Volunteers? Fine.
---[X] Anyone she wanted to revive? You'll help.

[X] If she won't share her goal, ask after her underlying reasons. *
-[X] What's her motivation? What can she share?

[X] Secondary topics:
-[X] De-Witching.
--[X] Let Riona examine Aurora.
--[X] Explain your experiments so far.
-[X] Ask after her powers.
--[X] What does your Soul look like?
-[X] Wish rejection: describe Oriko's symptoms.

Mami and Sabrina could always go play a relaxing game of Dark Souls! :V

"Ohmigosh. Mami I thought I was just kidding but I take it all back, this is relaxing."

"Hm?" Mami asks. The two of them are on the couch in her apartment, Mami sitting up to face the television directly, and Sabrina lying across the couch with her head in Mami's lap. "It's just a video game. They're always relaxing."

Her fingers dance across the controller like she's randomly button-mashing, but even here, she's unrelentingly precise and careful. The Chosen Undead dances across the screen like there's an emulator and a dozen savestates behind her, frame-by-frame, but it's all realtime; there's nothing but Mami, with the reflexes and instincts and dexterity to parry hundreds of bullets, stolen in ten seconds of wishing and honed across years of dedication and training.

"Have you played this game before?" Sabrina asks. "Heard about it before?"

"No?" Mami says. Her eyes are almost crossed with concentration, but she doesn't even hesitate or slow down to hear Sabrina out. "Mostly I heard Kyouko complain about it."

"Whaaat?" Sabrina gapes. She has to think back over what she knows and doesn't know, but... "She doesn't seem the type to have a problem with the gameplay?"

"Gameplay? Why would she-? No, um, I think she just thought the game was depressing? And 'theologically incoherent'?"

"...is Kyouko secretly a sap for noblebright fiction?"

"Noblebright-? No, I can guess. Sabrina, if you don't already know, I feel like I shouldn't be giving you more secrets about my ex-girlfriend?"

"So that's a yes."

Mami looks down at Sabrina and glares, still playing the game perfectly from out of the corner of her eyes. "Stop talking about other, cuter girls, Sabrina."

"But I caaaaan't. Meguca are always so saaad and have such tragic backstories and you know I want to pinch their cheeks and give them hugs forever and maybe adopt them. And anyways -- don't tell Kyouko I said this -- you're way cuter than she is. Hotter, too."

"I am not-!" Mami huffs. "And, I mean, uh. You didn't adopt me. I hope you're not planning on it."

"You are too, and no, silly, I'm not going to adopt you."

"Good. Your forehead kisses are nice but I think I'd miss your lip kisses."

"I'd miss kissing you, too," Sabrina says. "And besides, there are way better ways to join families."

One of the Bell Gargoyles hits the Chosen Undead dead-on in the face. She keels over and dies instantly.

"Sabrina!"

"What?" Sabrina asks innocently.

"Your long view is showing again."

"Oops, sorry. Force of habit." Sabrina turns her head and kisses Mami's tummy, while the Chosen Undead picks herself up by the bonfire. "Mami?"

"Yes, Sabrina?"

"What was the last time you played a hard video game, anyways?"

Mami hits the pause button. "Huh?"

"What was the last time you played a hard video game?"

"Uh," Mami says. "I don't know? I used to think some older Nintendo games were hard, but that's just because they were around when I was a little kid, and everything was hard back then."

"Have you ever played a hard video game?" Sabrina asks.

"No, not really?" Mami shrugs. "Video games are always easy. That's why they're games, right?"

"Um. Mami, it's not them, it's you."

"...I don't get it."

"Video games aren't easy. Well, lots of them aren't. Like this one! I think you're just really good at video games."

"That doesn't sound right to me," Mami says.

"I bet I can prove it to you," Sabrina says. "You know I give everything my all right?"

"Right."

"And you know I'm mysteriously competent at a lot of dumb things, right?"

"Right?"

"Give me the controller."

"I... no, you're also really bad at a lot of things, too. I bet if I do better than you, it's just because you're bad at video games?"

"You don't really believe that," Sabrina says.

"No," Mami admits. "I don't."

"So?"

"So... I'm... probably good at video games?"

"Yes you are! You are amazing!"

"Okay, now you're just buttering me up."

"Nope," Sabrina says. "You are just that good. If I was gonna butter you up, it would be more like this-"

Sabrina plants a long raspberry right on Mami's stomach, and Mami completely drops the controller, bursting into giggles. "S-Sabrina-! No, no stop-!"

"Never!" Sabrina grins, and drums her fingers along Mami's sides, threatening to tickle her.

"Aha, noooo! I'll, I'll get you back for this!"

"I'd love to see you try," Sabrina says. "I'm the 'Witch girl', right? Perfect final boss material. Your hardest battle yet!"

The controller lies forgotten on the ground; there are some games they can play without any screens at all.
