something more complex like a crow, or even a Eurasian Magpie?
I'm mostly curious as to what effects grief could have on non-magical beings that do possess some degree of intelligence (a member of the Corvidae family for example. Some studies have suggested that some Corvids can feel emotions as complex as grief.)
I thought we determined that A) I'm Feathers, and B) Feathers is Homulilly. As such, I am legally[1] allowed to make such comments about people who have bad history with Homura. Oriko needs no explanation. Sayaka, however, cannot be allowed to take Madoka as her wife; such attempts are to be met with increasingly dire consequences.
The war hammer spun in an arc, its blunt end displacing air aside with a might woosh.
Amber eyes widened, their black haired owner leaning backwards -knees bending to become parallel with the ground- pupils tracking the gleaming hammerhead as it grazed the tip of her nose, its frigid cold touch brushing away mere drops of perspiration...
Kirika squinted -the harsh sunlight shining right into her eyes- for a fraction of a second as she pulled herself back up following after the missed swing, her left shoulder drawing back as her right handed claws rose, her whole body's weight thrown into a might blow-
To clang and bounce off the back of Sabrina's Grief wing.
The grip on her hammer reversed, Sabrina swung back around, mirroring her opponent's strike.
Right arm trembling, Kirika brought up her left to block, but Sabrina's arm pulled back-
Amber eyes widened once more- then scrunched up as Sabrina kicked with her left foot instead, sending the black haired girl flying back.
Kirika gasped as the air left her, but quickly dug her long claws on the ground, drawing ten deep furrows on the fresh earth beside her feet and stopping her flight short.
A smirk was her opponent's sole warning as she swung her buried claws, a cloud of dirt and grass flying at Sabrina, who cursed, drew back her wing and struck the improvised projectiles away-
To find Kirika's crazed grinning face inches away from her own, her left arm swinging down from high.
Flat footed, Sabrina only managed to raise her warhammer-
Both combatants arms went numb and their ears ringed as both weapons clashed, metal scraping against metal.
Kirika's right arm swung then-
Blue eyes widened this time, Sabrina gritting her teeth as she adjusted her stance, drew her left hand to grab at a second warhammers which appeared in the vicious claws' path-
Only for said claws to vanish, Kirika's hand drawing into a fist and burying itself into Sabrina's solar plexus.
For a moment time stood still, the white and blue magical girl's arm uselessly raised against a blow that never was, the black magical girl grinning ferally, victorious.
Then Sabrina grunted as she was flinged back, the ferocious strength of Kirika's punch enough to make her head spin as she flew away…
Her wings snapped to full length, the white haired girl blinking away the pain as she slowly glided to a stop.
"Tie!" yelled Masami as Sabrina's boots touched ground.
Both combatants broke gaze to look at the redhead, or rather, at the big black letters magically floating over her and her girlfriend's heads.
Sabrina 3 | 4 Kirika
From where she was sitting, Hiroko shook her head at the girls, her long black hair swaying with the movement.
Sabrina spared a thought to compare the illusionist's hair to Homura's -to find it lacking, of course- as she dismissed her warhammers and rolled her shoulders, letting some of the tension of the fight ebb out of her frame.
Sitting at different table in the garden -Oriko had somehow produced a lot of matching furniture once informed of the impromptu gathering at her home- Mami placidly sipped at her tea, only the most minute frown at the corner of her mouth betraying any sense of discomfort.
"They're being careful," reassured their host, Oriko Mikuni, sitting across from Mami. "My Kirika knows to hold back," she smirked, "you don't have to worry for your Sabrina."
The blonde's lips twitched. She opened her mouth, only to stop and turn as Sabrina called her name.
"Watch, Mami. You're gonna like this move!" the white haired girl winked.
"Good luck!" cheered Mami, giving Sabrina her brightest smile.
Once the sparring girls turned back to each other, dropping into their battle stances to a few encouraging cheers from Sayaka and Yuma, and some booing from one Ono Megane, Mami's golden eyes fixed themselves on Oriko's smirking sea-green ones.
"If my Sabrina wasn't holding back," retorted the blonde with only a small blush, "the fight wouldn't even last a minute."
With such confidence she stated so, the slight tension seemed to vanish from her features, and Mami turned to pay her full attention to Sabrina's and Kirika's spar.
It was as Sabrina swept at Kirika's feet with a poleaxe-sized warhammer that Oriko answered. "My Kirika knows all your measly tricks by now," she not-quite-smirked, watching as Kirika brought down both sets of claws on Sabrina for an exaggerated overhand blow, "she would see right past them, and counter!" she raised her voice as the ground rumbled under the berserker's strike.
"You underestimate Sabrina's resourcefulness," Mami's tone matched her host's as she watched Sabrina, completely avoided the attack -and the rumbling ground- by gliding back, then speeding forward to kick at Kirika's head.
The black haired girl somehow managed to twist out of the way, and quickly regain her balance before Sabrina could follow up on her attack. Mami's smile dimmed just a bit.
"But let's not forget this is a melee only spar," Oriko took a sip of tea, "it is only expected my Kirika would win, rules or no rules."
Said magical girl's ears perked up, and she grinned fiercely as she threw herself once more at Sabrina, raining down strike after clanging strike against the taller girl's suddenly frantically blocking warhammer.
Mami bit her lip as Sabrina was forced to quickly cede ground to the shorter magical girl, just to be able to keep up with her repeated strikes.
"Sabrina is not such an easy opponent to beat!" yelled the blonde, clenching her fists... before quickly regaining her composure, picking up her teacup and sipping from it in a ladylike manner.
While Sabrina managed to fend Kirika away for a moment -long enough to take flight and disengage momentarily, Oriko mirrored Mami's actions, but somehow, she seemed to pull it off better, more elegantly.
Mami's eye did not twitch under the Seer's stare.
Oriko blinked suddenly. "Excuse me," she muttered, quickly standing up and entering the house proper.
Nonplussed, and feeling somewhat cheated, Mami allowed herself to frown at her host's retreating back, before turning to watch the spar once more.
"Woo~! Kick her ass, Sabrina!" cheered Sayaka as said magical girl ducked under a spinning kick from her opponent.
"Kick her ass!" echoed Yuma.
"Y-Yuma!" exclaimed the bleunette, scandalized.
The young girl blinked up at Sayaka. "But Big Sis says it all the time."
Said big sister's hand landed squarely on top of the greenete's head, causing her to scrunch up her eyes and pout. "You shouldn' use that sort of language yet, 's clear, Yuma?" asked Kyouko, though not unkindly.
"Fiiiiiiine…" muttered Yuma.
"Kick that Witch girl's ass, Kure!" yelled Ono from her seat besides Masami's table.
Yuma's big green eyes stared up at Kyouko.
There was a quick series of whoosh-ing sounds as Kirika swiped at Sabrina.
The redhead shrugged.
Sabrina kicked away from Kirika, earning herself some breathing space. The berserker magical girl didn't pursue immediately as she had so far, and instead both girls took a moment to size up each other, and regain their breath.
The sun beared down on the combatants.
Sabrina wiped the sweat off her forehead, and while doing so, chanced a quick glance -and wink- at Mami, who smiled back at her.
Shooting but a mere warning glance at Kirika's amber eyes, Sabrina leaned forward and jumped at the black magical girl, warhammer held close to her body.
Kirika met Sabrina's charge with a swipe of her left hand, which the other girl blocked, then an uppercut with her right hand claws, which Sabrina sidestepped, before raising her warhammer, flying a metre up in the air, and crashing down on the black magical girl as she swinged-
The clang of metal on metal rung in the air once more as Kirika blocked the strike with both sets of claws, crouching slightly before roaring as she swung her arms open, pushing Sabrina away.
Not giving her time to breathe, Sabrina quickly swung her warhammer -which extended mid-swing, going for Kirika's legs.
In a repeat of an earlier move, the berserker magical girl jumped over the hammer's shaft, arms still raised, and with a maddened grin brought down her claws on the white haired girl's head.
Sabrina smirked.
Kirika's eyes had the slightest time to widen -no time to pull back- before Sabrina, rather than dodging, calmly raised her poleaxe, placed it horizontally in the path of the attack, and held it with one finger.
The spectators gaped. Sayaka tried to shout a warning-
The black claws CRASHED onto the shaft of Sabrina's weapon with a horribly screech of metal on metal.
Kirika blinked dumbly as the extended warhammer stayed completely immobile, and she herself was held in the air instead by the force of her strike.
The black haired magical girl had a moment of incomprehension to catch Mami's shout of "Yes!" or to see Sabrina's exuberant smile before the Grief controller mightily pulled on the warhammer, this one hooked itself on Kirika's bent claws, and Kirika's face was shoved into Sabrina's rising palm-
Kirika's head bent away from the strike, letting it pass harmlessly overhead as most magical girls watching winced at the sheer angle her neck took, and dissolving her claws once more -too close to use them- the berserker landed in a crouch inside Sabrina's guard, let her body rise and spin and punched up at Sabrina's face-
The fist smacked against Sabrina's palm as she caught the strike, wincing, and tried to knee Kirika's gut- only for her to also catch the strike.
Kirika grinned ferally up at Sabrina, who returned a half panicked grin.
Kirika's feet shifted-
Sabrina's wings flapped mightily, pulling her away and buffeting the black haired girl a few steps back-
Without waiting, a new warhammer materialized in hand, Sabrina swung in a diagonal arc-
Kirika's clawless left hand raised-
"The cake's ready!" announced Oriko's stepping back into the garden.
Kirika blinked, shooting her happily smiling Ojou a look holding said cake-
Sabrina's blue eyes widened in panic at the same time Kirika's orange ones did.
Sabrina's boots dug on the ground, her white knuckled grip on the hammer faltering...
Kirika's hand barely managed to grab onto Sabrina's slowed attack safely-
Only for Sabrina to bodily crash onto Kirika, sending both girls down in an 'eek'-ing, grunting messy pile of tumbling limbs.
A few seconds later, the girls skidded to a halt, eye to eye on the ground, to a complete silence.
"Tie!" yelled Masami once more.
A snicker, then a hearty guffaw from Kyouko, followed by a smack as Sayaka palmed her own face are enough for Sabrina and Kirika to quickly separate, each girl red faced as a tomato.
Both magical girls lied down on the disturbed grass side by side, panting from exertion after the continued sparring, simply looking up at the afternoon sky and enjoying the breeze.
Mami's and Oriko's faces inched upside-down into their view.
"Are you OK, Sabrina?" asked the golden magical girl worriedly.
"Kirika?" the Seer's eyes flitted around her body, as if looking for injuries.
"Completely fine," smiled Sabrina, reaching a hand up for Mami to take.
"Me too," nodded Kirika, before throwing a look at her sparring partner.
Sabrina looked back, half sitting up while holding onto Mami's hand.
The black magical girl grinned.
"I win!" she declared.
Immediately, her grin seemed to expands directly into Oriko's lips. The black and white duo simply looked at Mami and Sabrina, radiating pure, undiluted smugness.
Sabrina sighed, smiling as she let Mami lifted her up onto her feet.
"Yeah, you win, good spar," she offered her hand as Kirika was also pulled up by her Ojou.
"Yes! Take that, Witch girl!" yelled Ono in the background.
"... One hundred push ups, Megane," said Masami, as if commenting on the weather.
"But-"
"Or you get no cake," added Hiroko.
Ono Megane dropped to the ground.

"Yes, but first-" you grin at Oriko. "Thank you, Oriko. Thank you for doing what I... almost certainly couldn't have."
"It was nothing." Oriko shrugs, almost modest. Then again, you can see the spark of accomplishment and the tiny, satisfied smirk on her lips.
"Modesty doesn't suit you, Oriko," you say, sticking your tongue out at her before turning to Mami. "I'm sorry, Mami, but-"
"You have to speak privately to Oriko?" Mami says, giving you a soft smile. "I guessed."
"Yeah," you say, pulling her into a hug and burying your face in soft, golden hair. "I'm sorry, Mami."
"It's alright," she murmurs into your shoulder. "I'll let Kazumi know."
"Thank you," you say, easing back to smile at her. "I'll just be a few minutes, hopefully, but - if you're OK with continuing the search, let her know we'd be willing to keep pursuing that avenue?"
"Alright," Mami says with a firm nod. "I'll let her know."
"Sorry about all the waiting, Sayaka," you say, giving Sayaka a sheepish smile. "Hopefully we'll wrap all this up soon."
"Nah, go, go," Sayaka says, waving you off. "Shoo, off with your secrets." She winks.
You roll your eyes. "I'll be back soon. C'mon, Oriko."
A thought strikes you, and you slip into telepathy as you head for the sphere. "Hey, Niko? Success from Oriko - she's successfully convinced Anri. Do you want in on this?"
"I..." you can all but feel the chains of logic cascading through Niko's mind. "No, thank you."
The seer, having waited patiently, moves off towards the privacy sphere. Transformed, with her enormous, floor-length dress, she almost seems to glide across the roof. Probably the intended effect, for that style of dress.
You grin at Oriko as you enter the sphere. "Again, Oriko," you say. "Thank you so much."
"And again, it was nothing," Oriko says, waving it off.
"You'll take my thanks and like it, damn you," you say, rolling your eyes. You gesture, condensing Grief out of the air into two benches. "Anyway. What can you tell me? Go over what you talked to Anri about?"
"Certainly," Oriko says, nodding. "As you surmised, her mind and opinions had been poisoned by Kyuubey. I didn't try to dissuade her of most of them - there was no point, and it would have taken far too long."
"Fair enough," you say, rubbing your chin thoughtfully. You might have to come back to that at some point. "So... does she know? About our Soul Gems, about Witches? She should, all things considered, but y'know. Outside considerations, confirmation and all that."
"She knows," Oriko confirms. "And among other things, she believed that the Pleiades had the ability to transform magical girls into Witches. She was rather intent on gaining that ability for herself, in fact. I have not been able to disabuse her of..."
Oriko holds up a hand, frowning. "I apologise. Allow me to qualify my success - I couldn't go into detail without the privacy here. I have not been able to convince her to set aside her perceived vengeance on the Pleiades Saints. I have convinced her, in order, that Witches arise from magical girls without human intervention, and that the Pleiades do not have the ability to force magical girls to become Witches."
"Right," you say, frowning. "I'm sensing a but."
"Just so," Oriko agrees. "She still blames the Pleiades Saints for Yuuri's death. Even knowing that the Pleiades did not cause her to turn into a Witch, she sees the fact that it happened at all to be a sufficient cause, let alone that the Pleiades did kill her Witch. She is quite, quite hysterical."
"I..." you scrabble for words, for understanding. "So that Yuuri Witched out at all was the Pleiades' fault?"
"In a word, yes," Oriko says with a delicate shrug. "Bear in mind that the grief is fresh, and kept close to her heart. I've also managed to convince her that Clear Seeds are not particularly unique. I've informed and given her Yuuri's Witch's Grief Seed, but she is not completely convinced that that is in fact Yuuri. And since the topic has come up..."
She reaches into the folds of her voluminous skirt to withdraw a Clear Seed - Hildegard, which she hands back to you.
"Thanks," you say, tucking the Seed away. "But if she demands vengeance on the Pleiades still, then..."
"She is willing to surrender in the face of a promise to bring Yuuri back," Oriko says. "I took care to impress on her that it was not guaranteed, but she seized upon the idea. She... cares more for her friend than she does her vengeance, and is willing to compromise for her. It's the only thing that Anri was willing to grant."
"Hmm," you say, leaning back and drumming your fingers against your thigh. You look past Oriko, at Mami speaking calmly to the Pleiades, standing strong in their circle. You turn the thought over in your mind as you watch for a second, before nodding. "I guess... well, it's definitely on my agenda. You did emphasize I couldn't guara... yes, you did."
Oriko nods again, slow and thoughtful. "Rather. How do you intend to continue?"
"Honestly, I don't know," you admit. "I don't have any good options to keep her in captivity. Do you think leaving her in captivity with the Pleiades would work?"
"Needlessly antagonistic," Oriko says. "Eminently doable, perhaps, if we acquire something secure enough that she cannot remove it and enchant it with anti-magic."
"Yeah... I can't imagine she'd take it well. Nor the Pleiades," you say. "And I don't really want to put the Pleiades in charge of someone who hurt them. They do have the space. Which... ugh. I can't in good conscience ask you to do it, either."
"To imprison her?" Oriko asks, grimacing. "I am... less than inclined. She would not be a good guest, and we would have to provide for her."
"Mm," you agree. You're kind of considering asking if Oriko and Kirika would want to stay in Asunaro instead - at the very least, they wouldn't be going stir crazy cooped up in their mansion. But it's definitely something you should run by Homura before even bringing it up.
"Have you considered mercenaries?" Oriko asks, raising her eyebrows. "Not necessarily the Fukushima girls, but perhaps asking for aid from Sendai or Ishinomaki, since you have rapport with them already."
"That's... hm," you say, tapping your chin. "That's a possibility. Probably not the Sendai group proper, maybe the University or Ishinomaki groups."
"You would know better than I, on that subject," Oriko says. "Just suggesting it as a possible option."
"It's a good one," you agree. "The problem then becomes a matter of the infohazards, which... I'm fairly certain none of the groups are aware of."
"Then perhaps other mercenaries," Oriko says with a shrug. "I am sure they must exist."
"Mm..." you say, rubbing your nose. "Lemme think about it."
"Of course," Oriko says.

=====
Apologies for the delay in this one. Writing just didn't flow, and Sunday turned out unexpectedly busy.
Hm. That Anri is willing to stop her murder plans for the Pleiades is definetely a plus, but that still leaves us with the same problem of containing her. I don't think we know anybody who knows all the magical girl stuff and would be willing to watch Anri for the time being. Like I agree with Oriko that there's probaly a group somewhere out there who fits all the criteria, but finding them might be a tad difficult. You can't just go to every magical girl group and make some obscure hints until you're sure what they know.
This sounds like a good idea, if we can wrangle it.
Failing that, I think it's worth noting here that both Sendai groups are well connected in the region. Tohoku university would be happy to do us the favor of putting us in contact with people, and as for Sendai... Akiko has every hint of being in the same position as Anri, plus a couple years.
