Argh, you all update so quickly! It is impossible for me to catch up!

So, I was wondering if you all could help in catching up on what happened in the story. I stopped soon after we beat the evil waterbender person and her allies go home.
Are you reading the whole thread or the Story Only thread?

Even the story only thread's a pain to read through. Each post is so long...
The worst part is that a chunk of the story makes a lot more sense if you read the entire page each story post is located on for context, so in order to get the full story you have to read through 368 or so pages of ramblings and stuff, along with the posts. It's still good fun, though.

This is a complicated question to answer. Firstly, not all depression is the same r of equal intensity and it can change within person. Also, "defaulting to sadness" is merely one possible symptom of depression. I have been like that but am not anymore. At my worst, I believed that my very existence made the world a worse place. Using fiction to help me is something I do. But I have to be careful with it, because sometimes the wrong genre at the wrong time will make things worse. Watching something happy and heartwarming has dropped me in the dumps from seeing how unlike my life it is. Reading something unhappy has made me feel worthless. But both have helped me before. One develops insight into this through experience. At my worst though, fiction was one of the few things keeping me alive. Honestly, I see myself spiraling very quickly without it even today. Another is fear. Yes, I can and do use my own negative emotions against each other as a coping strategy. Or simply numb myself and develop a feeling of deadness. Sometimes that's better than the alternative. I mean, I can and do take enjoyment out of little things, but it's fleeting. I've had therapists before (and technically am still supposed to, but I'm poor, so I use My Little Pony instead). And I've been on anti-depressants before (which make it seem like the world is AWESOME but that's different from feeling happy. Well, I say happy, but I'm not sure. It's hard to tell. I thought that I knew all the emotions and then discovered I was wrong when I felt a new positive emotion when watching My Little Pony (it's still the only way I experience it). And I realised how little I know. Was this happiness? Or was it something else?

Does that help?

Somewhat, I think. Thanks for explaining. Don't worry too much, you're not the only one who finds the different shades of emotion confusing. I think my weirdest emotion was when I was angry and happy at the same time. Or possibly when I was angry, laughing, and also really tired. If you're fond of My Little Pony though, have you taken a look at MLP fanfiction? The MLP infinite loops and the Pony POV series are both extremely long works that stay in line with the original show's theme of friendship in adversity and sticking by your friends no matter what.

Well, we finished our business in Sendai, flew back with a few tears on the way due to us feeling we were being too damn pushy, we dropped Kirika off with a tired Oriko, and went home and then to sleep. Mami moves from her bed to Sabrina's futon during the night, and is very embarrased about it next day.

Morning. We postpone a talk with Mami so she can go to school. IIRC, the talk was gonna be about Sabrina's secrets she's keeping from Mami. We find out the Shizukis lent the Mikis a house to live in, and Sayaka's feeling down about owing so much to her friends. Homura interrupts an argument by way of amazing hairflip.

Science time. We can make grief become pretty much anything (not actually anything), and give it many mundane and magical properties, but this grief then lights up in meguca senses as witchy stuff, like in Barriers. Grief Seeds steal grief from much less full Grief Seeds. Mami telepathies us a lot.

Lunch. Hitomi's out of the hospital. We time-stop-chat with Homura: Apparently, she kills Akiko whenever she causes trouble; Homura's more interesed on whether any meguca's signing up for WP duty rather than their well being; she doesn't like us trusting Oriko at all; she gives us a diary of Witches; we agree to tell everybody about the Lich Bomb, not quite tears aside; Kwyjibo definitely developed a crush on Homura one time she healed his hand to prevent Sayaka form contracting, we don't get any details on this.

More science. Hammer's magic's pretty cool.

We visit Oriko. Kirika is aghast at the mere idea of microwaving tea. We apologize to Oriko for our threatening Kirika that one time. We don't find a super quick magical way to heal Oriko's arm, so we settle for the normal magical way. The Pleiades Sainst need pants, and Soujo and Luca will be coming over in two weeks from then; they're all still alive, even Kazusa, apparently. Elsa Maria is predicted to arrive in three days in West Mitakihara. We get Kirika into precog jokes, much to Oriko's consternation. Mami telepathy continues. O&K are totally in for world saving business

KB is grief disposal. Mami shows serious anxiety issues after being away from Sabrina for hours. Everybody is invited to Mami's for fun and Lich Bombing, but Nagisa and Hitomi can't make it. Sabrina admits to brain damage in a way that makes everybody believe she's joking. Pants. Lichbombs are dropped. Sayaka tries to be nicer to Homura. Trauma all around. Madoka pulls a Kyubey. Three people died at the Sendai thing, says the news. Homura and Madoka are prompted to talk to each other as they go. [incubators math discard math pets fuzzys Asunaro caw caw]

We start learning 'proper' roofhoping while going hunting with Mami and Homura. We analyse a Barrier. A chicken familiar literally kicks our face in, in a mind battle when we try to take over it. Using witchy grief in a fight is too distracting for others. Witch dies.

Later, we have out talk with Mami. We admit to keeping secrets and Mami worries a lot mostly because of how we act than anything else. Mami just wants Sabrina to stay with her and is OK not getting in on secrets.

Next morning, Mami's nestled besides Sabrina once more. Embarrasing. We get lunch money to treat Kyouko, and promise to do our best to make it for lunch with Mami.

That's up to Interloper, part 1. Tired now.

I do read MLP fanfiction. Write it too. The POV series has lots of interesting ideas, to the point that I've appropriated a few for my own verse, but the execution sometimes grates on me a bit to the point that the fight with The Valeyard was uninteresting to me, which caused me to drop it.

My favourite MLP fic is Harmony Theory.

Destroying or taking all the money, isn't a good idea, the Yakuza will probably be in a lot of trouble, due to this shopping spree, or some of the yakuza may commit seppuku. Those yakuza don't deserve to die because Sabrina and Homura decided to take their resources, at least with the left over money, they haven't lost everything.

I've included asking Oriko about the consequences of robbing the Yakuza, the possibility of them dying, asking about Amy's fate and a possible expedition to Asunaro.

[x] You're far from perfect. You have made mistakes. A lot of them. You're only doing so well because of your knowledge of the loops, and you haven't seen every one of them.
[x] ...And because you value her opinion, and this is rather important. Even with just what you said. 'Don't lie to her. Or to yourself.' That helps. And she's the only person that you can really both trust and talk to about all of this.
-[x] You think she's a better judge of character than she might think. She does have the most experience out of everyone, and you want to know what she thinks about things, even if you both might not always agree. You both are kind of partners in this.
-[x] Apologize for bringing up bad memories and making her uncomfortable. You didn't mean to upset her.
[x] Continue on if everything looks fine.
-[x] Leave the rest of the money behind.

[x] Nice Katana.
[x] Oh! Oh! Ask Homura if she still has that mop.
-[x] Remove prints and/or other identifying marks, residue etc. Ask about Amy, the cat.
-[x] Swap out. Lulz.

[x] Thank Homura for letting you come along. It was...nice, spending time with her. Let her know you'll be happy to tag along whenever she wants.
[x] Tell Homura that you will later on ask Oriko, what will happen to the yakuza, we just rob, will they suffer any repercussions, and about a possible trip to Asunaro, with precautions taken
[x] Cleanse.
[x] On the way back, talk to Homura about Elsa Maria's barrier. It almost seemed like someone was asking you who you were...
[x] Return to Mami. Offer to cleanse Homura again. End timestop. Continue getting ready to meet with Megane. Contact her once everyone is ready.
[x] Telepathy Mami. Tell her Homura pulled you for that errand you told her about earlier, so that's already done.

@Katahiraga: ... you do know what mafia is? The yakuza are pretty much Japanese version of it.

Yuma's mom looks like a saint compared to them - at least she only went out of her way to hurt two people, neither of who lost any organs to it.

There are reasons that I and others listed earlier for consequences of getting one yakuza to experiment on by griefrip:
  • aura of mystery being replaced by obvious suspect (if you want aura of mystery)
  • possibly interesting data on relation of grief and soul
  • being less pure to Homura (might be benefit, might be not)
  • Kyubey possibly being able to get it through recording nanotech smoke or possibly just centitech recorders on the soul gems.
  • potential backfire
Note that this list doesn't include the yakuza.

Now, some have proposed to make sure to avoid grabbing a less evil one if we were to experiment, but the one in charge is quite certainly not such.

Now granted, Yuma's mom isn't someone who deserves to die. However....The main reason we don't just melt them with 3100-degree flames like the drugs is not because we care about them but because it could lead to large gang war/backslash from parent organization.

Stomping that out by destroying the parent organization too, while possible, is not in the scope of current plan.

Now, asking Oriko about Asunaro expedition might be decent idea on general principles. About the yakuza, I'm not 100% on since we just asked Homura.

And I believe we've already asked Homura about Amy?

In re: junkyards.

It's a barrier. Can be accessed from anywhere on Earth, no matter how far you go in the barrier it will spit you out where you entered. Also will never find someone who entered the barrier from a different location. Nobody has ever found the witch responsible, most meguca instinctively know it is futile. Barrier is convenient for training. Belongs to the witch of Entropy, the crawling chaos that creeps up on you with a smile...

Hora.

Barrier so large and all-encompassing that meguca instincs choose to ignore it because it's always there, got it.

I don't think Amy's fate is mentioned yet. You don't know anything about the yakuza, their is no evidence that they participated in organ trafficking, You just condone that its ok to kill them , if getting away with it without retaliation is possible, thats just wrong, in the first place, these yakuza haven't done anything heinous in front of Sabrina, killing in grief and anger is understandable, killing on a whim and out of convenience is horrible and a atrocity.

Sabrina and Homura invaded and steal their resources, so if anyone of them do die, it will be Sabrina and Homura's fault, they started it, so naturally the responsible and moral thing to do is to make sure that the consequences of this heist won't be fatal for them. Oriko may be capable of ensuring that nobody dies because of a simple raid.

Like I said, the yakuza don't deserve to die just because Homura decided to rob them. Experimenting on them to see the effects of grief on soul is just inhumane, you want Sabrina to become a person like that? Oriko may notice it if Sabrina does perform human experimentation, and you probably misjudged Homura by assuming that she approves or wants Sabrina to be willing to suppress her morals and performing ruthless but efficient methods of attaining goals.

Then there is the fact that the yakuzas probably do have families, or daughters, who may be magical girls too, if someone does die because of this robbery, the situation can escalate just like the sendai situation. So don't just let people die, just because they don't matter to you, especially people whose situation, you have a hand in creating.

@Katahiraga : ...I don't think we ever seriously considered killing, let alone grief-ripping the yakuza, did we? I suppose a couple might die if later on, their bosses suspect them or demand they pay for losing all the cash and weapons, but that's what you get when you join a murderous criminal organization. Sometimes, you will be blamed and killed for things that aren't your fault.

I kinda doubt that too many of them will be executed or 'volunteered' to commit seppuku anyway, since taking all their stuff will be a big enough blow to them that they probably can't afford too much of a manpower loss afterwards. In the state they'll be in after this, they won't be able to afford looking weak to the other criminal gangs. So all in all, probably not too many deaths. And if there are, seriously, it's their own fault for joining an organization where you can get killed for someone else's screw-up.

If they die as a result of our heist, wouldn't that be in itself evidence of heinous action?

These guys are employed generally at the expense of or are as instruments of others suffering. That and if we've already taken the guns and destroyed the drugs (this has already happened), does it really matter if we destroy the money too? Dealing with the Yakuza was always going to be a measure of how much damage we intended to do. Half-assing it wasn't going help matters either way. Do as little damage as possible or cripple them entirely.

We choose to cripple the organization as a whole.

That isn't to say there won't be loss of life resulting from this. But in the end we're also saving lives and ending suffering for others. Guaranteed innocent lives.

We didn't make this decision carelessly if that's what you're insinuating.

Hm, I thought we did ask, but now that I check, no "Amy" or cat Madoka Homura posts by Firnagzen...

And, you know, that rather neutral list of consequences was to demonstrate how little we care for Yamaguchi-gumi, @Katahiraga.

They may be human. But we are not willing to "re-educate" them into a knife at parent organization (resulting in them getting killed far more surely) and any lesser measure means they'll just keep being used for organized crime.

Speaking of that, what do you imagine this wealth was gotten through from? Sure, it may not be organ trafficking, but it might be human trafficking or extortion or whatever other wide-scale options there are for that wealth. This may be PMMM au, but what sort of crimes are you thinking of that they accumulated it from?

*image of Yakuza with a wad of cash who claims the drugs are just their personal stash, nothing to worry about officer*
Hmm, Nyarko-san as witch. Would that make her more sane?
Not really, probably just unhappy.

Residue Processing pt. 6
You sigh, letting your eyes drift, too. Inevitably, they find themselves drawn on the gleaming steel of the katana. "I'm... so very far from perfect. And most definitely not some kind of a miracle worker," you say softly, quirking a sour smile. Miracles do exist, don't they? How many might flow from your hand?

"I've made mistakes. A lot of them," you say. A glance over at Homura. You find lavender eyes, shadowed and pained, meeting yours, and you think you see a glimmer of understanding for that regret. "I'm only doing well because of the knowledge I have, and I haven't seen every one of the loops."

Homura sighs. "You've done better so much better than me," she whispers. "I..." She trails off with a sigh. "May I have a cleanse?" She lifts her left hand towards you, the motion listless, lacking her usual sharp, precise energy.

"Of course," you say. It only takes a moment of thought to draw the Grief from Homura's Soul Gem, and she straightens, watching as the frothing corruption seeps into the air in churning eddies. You draw the Grief into a little sphere, something about the size of your fist, before you send it zipping away to join the rest of your Grief.

"Thank you," Homura murmurs quietly, the tension in her body unwinding a touch. "I'm..." she trails of for a moment, before continuing more strongly. "I'm not sure if I can offer any more insight."

"Homura," you say gently. "I ask because I value your opinion, and this is rather important. Even what you just said? 'Don't lie to her. Or to yourself.' That helps, Homura. It's... an insight I didn't really have before. You might not think much of it, but it really does help. And..." You pause, and wait for her to look at you before smiling. "You're the only person that I can both trust and talk to about all of this, you know?"

She exhales slowly, her eyes closing for a moment. "They don't hate each other. Not really," she murmurs.

You swipe at your face. "Mmm. Yeah," you say, walking over to her. "And... you know, Homura, you're a better judge of character than you might think. You have the most experience of... well, anyone, really. amd I do want to know what you think of things. I admit, we may not always agree." You meet her eyes, and smile at her. "But I do value your opinions, and hey. We're partners in this, right? Getting all our friends through this."

Homura nods slowly, looking preoccupied with a thought. You take a step back, giving her space to thing. A moment later, she speaks again, hesitantly and slowly. "There's one way."

"Oh?" you ask, perking up. Maybe there's something you could learn here?

"Shared grief," Homura says, looking away from you. "Miki Sayaka, usually."

"I-" you blink at her. "Oh. You mean..." Sayaka died?

She nods.

"Ah. Yeah. Let's... not let that happen," you say, reaching up to tuck your hair behind your ear. "Um. I'm sorry for bringing up bad memories and making you uncomfortable. I... didn't mean to upset you."

Homura sighs. "It's alright."

In the silence that follows, you look back at the safe, and the little butler-blob of Grief you've packed full of cash and a few gold bars. You've got plenty here, honestly, and you're really not terribly sure what you're going to do with those gold bars - maybe literally throw one at Kyouko to see what happens. That being the case...

"I think I've got enough here," you say, sealing up the sphere of money and sending it away. "Homura? Do you need any? If not, I'm going to destroy the rest, too."

"No, I have plenty," she says with a shake of her head that sets her hair swishing behind her.

Concentration, a bare touch of it, has Grief swinging in, already blazing as luridly bright flame. You debate for a moment with yourself between the pros and cons of simply slagging the entire safe. All things considered, it isn't a bigger stunt than melting all their drugs. Or...

Your eyes sliiiiiide across to the katana, gleaming steel bright in defiance of the colour draining timestop. That is a nice katana...

You turn away from the safe, Grief fire set free from merely burning the contents of the safe and starting to spread hungrily across the entire monolithic slab of metal behind you.

"Oh, Homura~?" you lilt, stopping in front of the rack. You can feel the grin splitting your face. You glance at the yakuza thug -well, he's probably the local boss or something, but still a thug- before dismissing him. "Do you still have that mop?"

"The mop?" Homura asks, blinking at you before following your eyes to the katana. "The mop."

"The mop," you grin.

Homura shakes her head slowly, before reaching into her shield to produce said cleaning implement. You grin, taking it from her, and then snatching the katana from the rack and dropping the mop in its place. No, wait, you can do better than that - and you do need to remove fingerprints and stuff, anyway. You grab the mop again - this time, with Grief.

Grief whips across the surface of the mop, incredibly fine blades sandblasting across it in a blurring storm. To your eyes, it looks like a churning haze of deep purple surrounding the mop handle. But you can feel every single blade in your Grief senses, dancing and slicing and polishing at your direction.

The mop drops back to the rack, handle now gleaming, marred by the ratty head of string. Can't exatly do anything about that, though.

You take a step back, inspecting your handiwork and swishing the katana idly through the air.

A glance aside at Homura, who's looking... well, more than a little perplexed.

You thrust both arms out at the rack, and the frozen tableau of the yakuza, still solemnly kneeling in front of the mop. The katana barely misses scraping against the ceiling. "Eh? Eh?" you grin.

Homura stares, before shaking her head slowly. Her lips are quirked in a tiny, tiny smile of amusement, and you cheer silently at getting amusement out of Homura. Your own grin only broadens, and you laugh, twirling on the spot with your arms outstretched.

A hand catches your wrist, arresting your turn. "Watch the katana," Homura says, the smile still on her face.

"Heh," you chuckle. "Thanks."

She nods. "Are you going to keep that?" she asks.

You look at it. "I suppose so," you say, grinning. Moving slowly, you sheathe it at your hip - you're almsot certainly making a horrible mess of the proper forms, but oh well. Another sphere of Grief arrives, shaping itself into a long tube as a makeshift scabbard.

... Sakura's weapon is a katana, doesn't she?

You discard that thought, smiling at Homura. "So, anything left?"

She shakes her head. "That's all, I think."

"Then... shall we go?" you suggest.

"Yes," Homura agrees, starting for the door.

"Hey, Homura?" you say, a thought occuring to you as you step out of the room, reclaiming the Grief that melted the safe into so much glowing slag on the floor. "I meant to ask this earlier, but I forgot to - do you know where t find Sasa? For tomorrow, you know."

"No, I don't," she says. "I know roughly where she might be, but not where she lives."

"Ah. That works, too," you say.

A few minutes later, you're headed back home via Grief carpet. Your loot follows behind you, hidden away in the planetarium of Grief, and Homura's sitting beside you. She lets her legs dangle off the edge of the carpet, swinging idly in the air. "... Hey. Homura."

"Yes?" she says, glancing at you.

You smile at her. "Thanks for letting me come along. It was... really quite nice, spending time with you."

She glances at you, her expression more unguarded than you've seen with her awake. "Thank you for coming," she murmurs softly.

"Yeah. And... I'll be happy to tag along anytime you want, OK?" you add.

She nods again.

You let the conversation lapse for a while as you, speeding through the chill air of the timestop and watching the shrouded city roll by beneath you. It's always kind of cold in the timestop, you notice. Probably just an artifact of the magic, really.

"Say, Homura?" you say, breaking the silence again. "Was there anything odd about Elsa Maria's Barrier? That last Witch, I mean."

She frowns at you. "You asked me earlier."

"Yeah, I know, just..." You purse your lips. "There was... something odd. It almost seemed like someone was asking me who I was."

Homura's frown deepens, her earlier good mood fading. "That's not..."

"I know," you say with a grimace, leaning back on your hands, propped out behind you. "It's weird. And very worrying."

"Can you talk to Witches?" Homura asks. "If not, could it be the 'feather'?"

"I don't know," you say. "Talking to Witches... the last time I really tried anything close to that, the Witch metaphorically stabbed me in the brain with Grief. That was Hildegarde." You pull the clear Grief Seed from your pocket by way of demonstration.

"I see," Homura says, eyeing the Grief Seed in your hand. She shakes her head. "I didn't notice anything unusual about the Witch."

Sayaka is a merguca. Or, you know, will be. Whatever. Also I googled this and to my immense surprise, there are no results.

I agree that it would be nice to ask Homura about Amy the cat. That's one of the things that is on my bucket list for asking Homura. I would be surprised if Homura didn't make a point of saving that cat in every loop. If for no other reason than it prevents Madoka from making a wish to save it.

There are also a number of other things that we need to talk to Homura about that would require timestop (or the grief interdiction field):
1. A discussion about witches across the different timelines. We've seen a number of anomalies (H.N. Elly not showing up, Elsa Maria showing up early, Belle and the Burning Witch which were not mentioned in Homura's book, and eight other witches that were not mentioned in canon). Are the witches in this loop substantially different than normal, or is there just a lot of variation in general?
2. Ask about the particulars about Madoka's wish from the last loop and its aftermath.
3. Ask about any magical girls that have caused problems for Homura in the past (like Sasa Yuuki and the girl who owned the obrez). These are the most likely candidates for Kyuubey (or "Feathers") to try to use against us in the future, so we should check them out.
4. Ask about Walpurgisnacht. When does it appear? Would it be possible for us to fight it before it reaches Mitakihara and causes a bunch of collateral damage? What weapons have damaged it in the past?

We also need to remember to reclaim the Feather from Mami when we get back.

[]Grab the katana and name it Muramasa.
I know you want to do this Mura, so go ahead take it.

Something also hilarious; What with Sabrina knowing everything google-able if she thinks about it, she's already almost proficient with her new katana. Yet another benefit of headternet.
