I'm sorry if I look like I'm picking on you Ugo,
Anything is better than her current mindset of kneejerk paranoia and distrust.
We don't have a 'mindset of paranoia and distrust'. We've a freaking complicated situation where
everybody's way too close to their breaking points. Oriko's pretty sure she's a dead girl walking; Mami's Mami; Homura's...
The vote doesn't get us into a debate, and that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it did. I disagree that my vote does anything but be largely supportive of Homura's POV, especially with us mentioning that we AGREE with Homura we can't trust her. But if we can't get Homura to see Oriko as an asset, we have failed. Homura is never going to really trust her unless we work at it, the team isn't going to work unless we get more openness, and Homura's unease is just going to build and build until things give way, badly. Maybe not in and of itself, but its pressure we won't need in the future and that we can do something about.
We've been stepping over Homura's patience and trust issues pretty much from day 1. Getting into a debate about Oriko, 24 hours after
that clusterfuck of a conversation would be pretty damn bad.
Remember Homura's feeling
lost. She doesn't know what the hell is going on and is
trusting us because she's seeing us get better results than her. Miss 'I won't rely on anyone anymore' is
trusting us. That's a constant strain on her as long as we want to keep Oriko alive and around.
And neither vote is being nearly that supportive of Homura's POV. Homura's POV is that
Oriko needs to die quickly. Saying that we can't trust Oriko 'completely' is saying that we're trusting her
way too much from Homura's POV.
But you've been meaning to be more honest, more forthright, haven't you? True, that's more to Mami than anyone, but Homura's a friend, too. "And, uh..." you say before your nerve runs out. "I talked to Oriko, and she's agreed to help me with research on, well, clear Grief Seeds and... anything that would help impro-"
"She's dangerous," Homura interrupts you. "You shouldn't be trusting her."
"Yes, but if there's any dangers to using the clear Grief Seeds or anything else, her precog would be my best shot at finding out what they are without actually tripping into it," you say, meeting Homura's eyes. She looks... not angry, per se. Perturbed, worried, and... afraid. Just a touch of it in the set of her jaw and the delicate lines around her eyes.
"She's dangerous," Homura repeats. "You... you trust her too much."
"She wants to help save the world, right?" you say. "And we're her best shot."
"She could be lying," Homura says simply.
^This is Homura changing tracks trying to convince us to not trust Oriko. That's as much a concession she could make.
And, 'Homura's unease is just going to build and build until things give way, badly'? Sorry Ugo, but
we're the ones that are building and building on Homura's unease. It's been only 24hs since we've had this conversation with her, and there were tears all around. We need to be
patient. That might mean playing the rest of the quest until the very end without Homura ever accepting Oriko as a part of the team.
If not now then when and where do we start if we're never going to try changing Homura's mind on Oriko as an asset if nothing else?
Way, way later. Patience.
We
can't make Homura trust Oriko. That trust is something Oriko needs to earn, and earning trust takes way freaking long, specially for such a
special case.
Homura shakes her head, a single sharp jerk to the side. "I... Oriko killed Madoka once. It... she isn't necessary. She k-killed Madoka. She could still be dangerous."
"Homura... you know that..." you bite your lip. "You know that I was terrified of Oriko when we first met, right?"
"Then why?" Homura asks, frustration leaking into her tone.
"Enough," she says. "I... I can't convince you." She pauses, taking a ragged breath. "And I can't... I can't force you to help me."
As much as we might blame ourselves for using yesterday's conversation to change Homura's mind without properly listening to her, she was pretty much doing the same.
She doesn't want us to trust Oriko. End of the story.
There's no
chance to take here. If we think we can change Homura's mind about Oriko at this point in time, we're simply deluding ourselves.
