Yes they very much are the HK cannot hold the lands they have at the lowlands not without disengaging from the hath so that leaves only The Xoh empire as the only viable player in the lowlands.
That was more of an issue when the TS religion wasn't unilaterally dragging all TS followers into a war of religion against the Xoh's religion, or when the Hath reclaimers weren't literally collapsing like a house of cards now that their hero is being countered by 3 heroes at once.

It's really is the Age of Hero.

The Nomad Son 2 got his ass whipped by the Eastern nomad, presumably a hero. Nomad Father 2 got his ass whiped by our hero.

The Hat spawned a hero. The highlander also spawned a hero. Then the HK spawned a hero son.

Meanwhile, our hero created a daughter with a hero priest, and then she turned out to be a hero.

That's a shit ton of heroes.

I really don't like the Science option... It feels like it would confrim all the worst fears of the chiefs and lead to further problems.
I don't really like the diplomacy option either personally would prefer to go to war and estalish her as a war hero but it doesn't seem like there's any chance of that winning...

In her own word, it would cause the least strife to do SCIENCE.

While I want to find out what the mother got into I think this will have the best long term effects.

The TS will fall they have too little pop and martial compared to the xoh empire I doubt they would last also hath are on the ropes but they are far from finished could spawn a hero next turn or just decide to turtle up.

It's possible that the new type of subordinate state AN was talking about being discovered is "Personal Union".
Well as far as I am aware the subordinate state is completely new to everyone. Tahu has it in his mechanics post I think.

E: Yeah. Here.

New Subordinate States

Slight clarification. Subordinate states include vassals, while periphery states are the ones that are you but on the edges of administrative range and thus can have some cultural divergence and have to be more self sufficient.

Also, you are probably going to develop a new kind of subordinate this turn, and are one main action away from discovering a new kind.

Maybe, but I have no doubt its also ambition since she could just run away if she wanted protection.

Run away from her home, her people, friends and loved ones...
It's not that easy to leave everything you know behind when there are other options
(She is even considering running away)
So it is not necessarily ambition.

I am personally hoping Greenshore's trade mission will allow us to make the Metal Workers (why don't they have a real name like everyone else already btw?) a subordinate state since we are basically the only reason they still exist at the moment.

Given how the Ymaryn operates, it's likely we are not going to vasalize the Hath, but something else? Maybe a protectorate?

[x] Forge a new path of war

we also have Honourable Death (Spiritual/Honour)

i just found the map of the civilizations i want to expand to the mountainous south

Ok my thoughts on why we should go for war is the following:

This conflict has shown us that while we have become great at anti-nomad warfare, we have fallen behind on the battlefield tactics that are suited for terrain other than plains and nomad foes. Seeing as our greatest rival in the area (Xho) are more likely to use tactics somewhere between the hath and nomads this leaves us far more vulnerable to them. Our eastern neighbors are also more dangerous seeing as they are conquerors rather than raiders.
There is also the fact that the Hath might still have a hero unit laying around waiting for a opening, if we send our heroine to war we can almost certainly guarantee a victory and possibly dissolution of the Hath (no more sea raiders).

I recall a recent conversation where someone recommended sending a gift to the HK as a prelude to gaining a presence in the lowlands. The diplomacy route here seems like a much more powerful foot in the door.

That said, it seems to me like the path of "gain power by compromising your values with others." The science option would keep us more independent, and just might prove to be very awesome.

I want to work on our public image. The HK need to better understand who we really are and why. Especially since our two nations are likely to divide up the Hath land between us, and I would much rather that division be amicable.

As far as I know, the subordinate states that exist now are Vassals and Tributaries.

I'm not sure if Personal Union counts as a subordinate state or not.

Copying quotes inside a post usually doesn't go well. It destroys the formatting. You can use the sources instead. It's why I left them in.
