Hey Halla/Blackhand,

1) Do you know what a Frog Fylgja does?
2) Was it Stigrun was was unhappy with the Fylgja she got? Anyone else?
3) What does the Gate/Lock look like, aesthetically? Is it made of Wood? Stone? Iron? Plant matter? Does it have engravings? Is it decorated?
4) Did Solrun ever tell you how she got her Odr supply for spirit bargaining/seidr usage?
5) Does Abjorn now have a Spotlight Effect?
6) Can you now discuss Odr details with Abjorn?

Yes, but it's not going to be better than a wooden bow. According to light googling, metal bows can't put as much velocity behind an arrow as a wooden bow can.

Steel bows ('forged iron' to Halla) saw some use in the 20th century, though she's unlikely to be able to make alloys to match that.

The big advantage would be that a forged iron bow can me made to an arbitrarily high draw power without needing to be the size of a tree.

The thing is, physics just aren't on the side of metal with archery. The lighter something is, the easier it can achieve greater velocity. 150lb draw weight longbow has the same power as a 1000lb draw weight crossbow.

Once again, this is all from some light googling and I am not an expert and probably partially wrong—or totally!—in some way.

I think you can probably achieve considerably higher velocity with metal then with wood theoretically, if you go high enough with the stiffness and size of the bow. but a wooden bow has a much better ration of strength needed to actual velocity/energy gained, since its far more elastic and thus can be pulled a longer distance with the same force.

the energy of the arrow is, roughly , 0.5kx^2 where x is the distance pulled and k is the stiffness of the bow. (again in a very rough and basic model) the distance pulled is F/k where k is the stiffness and F the force/strength applied. so a meta bow, being much stiffer, will have a higher k but will be pulled less distance for any force invested so will end up with less energy and velocity(since distance in the energy equation is squared). however, every bow will have a maximum distance you can pull, and since metal is both stiffer and much stronger, its distance is far higher then wood. so with an arbitrary strength invested you can get much more velocity on a metal bow, but it will take truly immense force to make use of that fact. there are historical cases for it though- Baliistas for example.

For Firestorm, it's worth noting (and confirmed by IF on Discord) that a single shield stops the whole Trick, so we don't want to invest in it too heavily.
Nah, see, its not the damage i want with the firefly field, its to spread effects (and fire, when we want) like our sunshine or seidr.
Thats also why i brought up flamecalling too. All that fire we lighted at start and let burn being called back for some other trick to use...
Its a support tech, basically.

Too bad we cant do the pulley system modern bows use for extra strength. But then, Modern bows are also made of synthetic stuff, which would need magical materials to substitute in Norsequest.

Halfdan barely speaks Greek. Enough to buy a loaf of bread and find his way to the nearest latrine, but he mostly just associated with other Norsemen during his time in the Guard as he was on campaign for 90% of his two-year stint.

So can Halfdan teach us that little he knows? Its still better than nothing afterall.

'Magic swords' is the most common answer, though Kare actually already has magical equipment from an escapade in Jorvik—he looted a magical sword from a pond after beating up a strange water spirit lady.

No, it's not the magic pond lady sword.

I like Kare even more now he he he....

Kare does, as well as a few bits of scale he won in a drinking game.

Would he allow us to check out those bits of scale armor to see if we can learn more abaout them?

I do wonder. if some culture believed, as one of its core cultural ideas, that 'metal bows are the best bows' will they be able to make them work?

I don't think Firestorm is our best bet for that. That seems outside its wheelhouse?

So can Halfdan teach us that little he knows? Its still better than nothing afterall.

It's lower priority, but we could maybe grab what he's got, yeah.

Seems like the way to go is make an automatic bolt thrower with rune based shenanigans. Something kinda similar to the edge protection runes on Crowfeeder, "this bolt thrower is loaded again with a bolt from this designated quiver after it is fired" or something else if someone can come up with a better way to phrase it. Then the quiver could be paired with it and have runes to recover spent bolts. Depending on how that manifests it might be possible to pincushion enemies with the bolt thrower and then use the quiver to rip chunks out of them when the bolts are recovered.

I wonder if we can make Whale-bone bows?
Probably not just yet, but it could be an interesting "Reward for a Great favor" or weapon for one of our kids (or their kids).

About bows, metal bows only made reasonably produced modern times due to elasticity needed. Today they are not used because ridiculous draw strength needed (if you are going to make it weak, use fiberglass etc. they are better) Even then velocity is a problem. However we have MAGIC to make use of. Runes that make bow limbs lighter would solve the velocity problem. (Though how that magic works matters, might work by dissipating energy rather than by conversation of momentum) Alternatively just use it in (relatively) close range while Hugareida Constructs harry. Low velocity doesnt necessarily means low energy afterall. In melee range you can punch with the bow even if you won't go for recall tricks. Installing a claw to handle shouldnt be that hard either. You can even install funny shaped shields too which remainds me of gun shields...

Hmmm... 🤔

Or, you know, Halla can just invent firearms  Gun draw contest on Fjords of Iceland she will bequeath :lol::rofl:

Hell, its even reasonable and probable. Her lineage doesn't even need gunpowder just shape Fire Hugareida into a bore. Like how Arknights guns actually being wands.

I think that calls for some experimentation, tbh. Because the thing about 'you can compensate with magic' is that you can do the same with other materials too.

So what ends up being better? A forged iron bow with reduced weight? A forged iron bow with enhanced elasticity? A wooden bow enhanced to withstand cultivator levels of strength? Or perhaps either material utilizing damage boosting runework?

Though that also leads me to the idea of using acceleration runework to make a pseudo-railgun, but anyways...

I'm aware that not everything is about damage, but Firestorm usually is, I think.
...no.
Like, that's your bias for bigger damage speaking.

We know which fire hugreida we heard about focuses on, mostly.
Camfire is the out of battle utility, ignition is melee quick firestarter, forgefire is for crafting, emberwind is the ranged precision firestarter, wildfire is to burn things up, firestorm is area attacks/effects, sunfire is the big damage, lava/pyroclasm is probably the DoT, little flame is... well, no fucking idea what the literal nuclear fire is for. Then, there is the mysterious godfire that Blackhand got from the smith god from Sveden.

here are the quotes i could find
Campfire - homely uses of fire
Ignition - kickstarting things/making fire more/explosions
Wildfire - Fire-fire. If you want to burn something down, you use this.
Forgefire - very hot fire, advanced version of Campfire that is too hot for most uses. Required for high tier crafts.

Firestorm is for when you want to delete the grid square that somebody is in (hyperbole) but it literally is incapable of precision work at all. You can't create a 'small firestorm', go big or go home!
And before you focus on the "Go big or go home" bit, its for the area, not the damage.
'Emberwind is very similar to Ignition, except it is more precise and has a much longer reach.'

You ever just wanna go ape wild? You ever just wanna lose control? You ever just wanna show the world that you don't stand for what it's throwing your way?

You ever just wanna tell somebody to fuck off while flexing your orthstirr capacity?

That's what Sunfire is good for

It also specifies a complete lack of precision. Your suggestion sounds very much like precision work to me (albeit on a large scale), which is why I'm skeptical. But maybe I'm misunderstanding your suggestion. What exactly do you envision the Trick you're suggesting doing and allowing? Maybe a few examples would clarify?

---[X] The plan here is introduce ourselves and negotiate with the bees if possible rather than compelling them.

Hmmm. How expansive is this? Could we verbally warn him about things like Hugr Infusion resulting in Frenzy or keeping his Odr below 81 until he's built a farm without risk of triggering Disclosure, or are we still limited to pointed silences and indicating our book on subjects like that, with only the stuff Solrun told us about Odr being allowed?
Warnings, but no details and keep it vague.

Alright, I'm planning on posting a thing for you folks to decide your fylgja upgrade, as it's reached Rank 10. I have some ideas, but feel free to give me more. No additional flaws.

Also, I'll need a dice for Eyvor and Hallbjorn's tafl upgrades.

Furthermore, I'll need some rolls for crafting. I, for some reason, am feeling a bit under the weather so I'll just let you folks figure out the dice on your own. Sorry about that, but boy oh boy thinking is weird right now.
