Or the wizard owl is good at collecting things so have it fly around the land collecting wood branches for Abjorn to smell in a game of hunt the thimble for Horra's magic hidey-hole.

Remember if our owl dies, so do we. Sending it looking for a dangerous magical location while we're pregnant and it lacks defensive tricks is highly risky. We're gonna send it to spy, no doubt, but we need to prep a bit more first, as well as actually give birth.

Need to get him Outlawed first, post-facto stuff doesn't count.

This. If he hasn't been officially outlawed his family have to come after us despite the rights and wrongs. If he's been outlawed, they don't.

I mean, we can load it up with our defensive tricks, no problem.

In the end, we schedule based on how much time we can buy. No more, no less.

To reiterate, the rules say we actually can't do this until Summer. We just did a Visit and only get one per season...I'd imagine an exception will be made for taking our evidence to the Headman once we get it (as that's just a continuation of the 'collect the evidence' Visit), but evidence collection over at Horra's place is definitely a new Visit compared to what we just did. Conveniently, that makes Summer 1 (the first turn after we are no longer pregnant) also the first turn we can investigate so there's a very real in-universe reason to wait for then as well.

I don't think we wait much longer than that even if Steinarr is willing to. Time is a factor here.

So find out where the wood smell location is then? Something that Abjorn or Steinarr can sniff out. While Halla has her Owl watch for Horra heading towards wherever he works his magic, which Horra will do now that his latest scheme was thwarted.
It could be more of a metaphorical smell. The stench of Horras vileness.

"I've been asking around if anyone knows of any shapecrafters in the area, but nobody was able to give me straight answers. Not even the Jarl of Jurgdby could look me in the eye." You can't look away from those eyes of cold steel, no matter how much the desire grips at your heart. "Will you be any different?"

'The marks of our lineage; hair of fire and a gaze of steel.'

"Tell me, loyal daughter, who is responsible for this act? Who is it that I will kill?"

Steinarr Freedfire's words cut straight to the heart of the matter.

What do you do?

By this point don't we have Horra dead to rights as a spellcaster?

edit: actually, come to think of it, how has Horra survived all the Nid from all that running? Or is it possible to reach an inflection point where "cowardly fleeing" becomes "goddamn, look at that man run! Fastest thing on two legs" and the nid inverts into othsevir?

One thing to note: If we drop the pole for the headman or hells, even the Jarl/king, there should be no reason that either Horra or Hasvir shouldn't be outlawed.

Horra, because its his doing, Hasvir, because he helped him.

Steinar just needs to leave the other kids of Horra out of this, which, i imagine he wouldn't mind, but who knows.

There is also the possibility of getting a messenger or someone with us to declare it beforehand, so Horra really has no way to call on the family without all of them becoming targets.

Your enemy was kin to half the valley, hiding behind their aegis while working their dark crafts, a sorcerer who has delved deep into forbidden arts pulled from the depths of the earth. Shielded by some spell that deflected the attentions of any who would know the truth of the matter and saw their words twisted away from exposing him, it was only now that you had a path to see his shield breached, to know what needed to be done to cast down the protection that would see his killers run down by the best and mightiest of the valley. It was only now that you learned of the warrior he was crafting, to turn against you all--an expert wielding the power of Water, strong enough to erode a stone troll in moments. And you still needed to discover the place where he worked his darkest arts, in order to see him cast beyond the Law, and exposed to our righteous vengeance.

No, we don't. We have him, sort of, for having a troll live on our land (if the testimony of a dead troll is worth anything, which I doubt)...but the troll never even mentioned the Scorn-Pole, so we have no proof it was him who did that, no witnesses to him erecting it. Nothing. I mean, it obviously was him, and the circumstantial evidence will help support our story if we ever get real evidence, but that's not the same thing.

Nah, his orthstirr is just only a tiny fraction of what it would be without all the nid...which likely only matters in a straight fight given how we've seen orthstirr work.

Like, guy's in his 40s or older and probably has less orthstirr than us...but 100-120 points of orthstirr is plenty to max out a bunch of your non-combat stuff completely even with very high stats, you only need more if you're gonna be fighting...and he just avoids that.

One thing to note: If we drop the pole for the headman or hells, even the Jarl/king, there should be no reason that either Horra or Hasvir shouldn't be outlawed.

Horra, because its his doing, Hasvir, because he helped him.

We have no proof of this at all. They can just say they sold the horse or never owned it in the first place. Like, our whole link is that Hasvir owned a horse that fathered this horse...if he's ever put the horse out to stud (fairly likely given it's a notable horse), he can easily claim it had children all over the valley, and even if he didn't he can say he sold that one in particular to 'a man in a cloak' or something like that.

Heck, Hasvir actually may have sold that horse to somebody (who was Horra in disguise or Horra stole it from) if Horra cares about giving him plausible deniability. Hasvir could easily know nothing about the Scorn-Pole if his father kept him out of it.

It's not Nid if you don't think you're doing anything wrong and nobody knows enough to tell the difference.

It's not Nid if you don't think you're doing anything wrong and nobody knows enough to tell the difference.

I'm pretty sure it still is nid even then...all evidence is that Horra has a crapload if nid on him. The way orthstirr works just means that nid doesn't actually hurt your non-combat abilities all that much. Like, if Steinarr has 1000 Orthstirr and Horra has only 100...Steinarr would win every fight, but Horra only needs less than 20 to max out his stealth or other specific non-combat things and be as good as anyone at that specific thing.

Hence him never actually confronting Steinarr, as he'd lose badly.

...and half the valley is related to him, which means that our evidence against him has to be solid.

Yup. In modern terms what we have is 'his car was spotted near the scene of the crime' level evidence. It's enough for us to know, given the grudge he bears us, but not enough for the law to act on...especially when he's related to the judge. It'll help when we get more actual evidence, but we need something more concrete than what we've got.

Well, does look pretty much unanimous @Imperial Fister .

Anyone else have any Reward Dice up their sleeve they want to contribute to rigging this?

Also, with regards to scouting with Fylgja, reminder that we can put Ember-Winged Cloak into it as well. There probably aren't many things in the forest that can catch a jet powered owl in a full dash.

-[X] Horra familial ties to most families, practically all that didn't move in recently
--[X] If we kill him now, before proving his crimes to get him outlawed again, the families that can't stand him will still be forced to avenge him.
---[X] That would endanger all Steinarr holds dear and risk Horra leaving behind an heir that continues his crimes
-[X] We were warned of this, both by Aki who could only see that there was something wrong with telling too early, and a Seeress that had children with Blackhand, all the children were murdered by Horra, she wants him dead as much as Steinarr, but knows we must be careful to do it right!
-[X] rash action would lead to stepping into traps Horra laid.

Alright chums! Everyone with reward dice! NOW IS THE TIME.

This is, after all, a Critical Roll, and we want to rig it as hard as we can, especially if it means potentially getting a Muna out of it! This whole chain of events feels very Muna worthy TBH. Taming Freedfire after all feels like a significant show of mastery over the idea of Fire after all. We're even supposed to have a Boon that makes comprehending Fire Hugareida easier!

I'll throw my Reward Die towards this as well. I'll just have to hope other people are prepared to spend theirs for the birth...or earn more Reward Dice somehow.

Hair of Fire and a Gaze of Steel (CedeTheBees)
Staggering on rubbery limbs over to where the small stream trickles from the ash, you peer down into the clear, reflective waters. Sure enough, in twin seas of steel floats a pair of infinitely thin rings of softly glowing red.

The same red that colors runes.
I can't wait for Halla to learn how to turn that on on purpose.

One thing I am not certain of is what happens if we present partial evidence without making actual accusations. Because while we don't have hard evidence that Horra is terrible and should be outlawed we do have the evidence to show that someone has been committing some major crimes against us. And what happens if we convince one of his relatives that he is guilty but can't prove it. What sort of obligations would they be under?

We can and should give the Scorn-Pole to the Headman, but I don't think it will, on its own, effect peoples' obligations regarding their relationship to Horra absent proof of him being behind it.

Fingers crossed we manage to convince Steinarr. Don't want him doing anything rash. If he were to get killed, there's not really anything protecting us from Horra's wrath - from what I understand, he's mostly been doing all this sneaky backstabby shot because he knows he can't take Steinarr in an actual fight.

You meet your father's steel with your own.

"Father who gave me my name," you begin with calm words and a steely gaze, "I will tell you, but you have to promise me that you won't act rashly."

"Why have you kept this from me?" His words hit you like a longship making landfall, but it is one you are ready for.

"Because Asveig begged me not to," he staggers a step back, eyes snapping wide as the wall of stone cracks, "because I have had two separate seers tell me that it would be a bad idea. Because of that I held my tongue."

His eyes flick back to you as he mutters. "If Asveig begged that of you, then she had a good reason." He stands straighter, finding his footing once again. "Tell me that reason, tell me why two distinct seers warned you away."

"Because he stands with half the valley at his back."

"If half the valley would fight on his behalf, then the ashes of half the valley will feed my fields."

"Because going after him will have us branded outlaws."

"If that is what the law says, then it is not a law I want part in."

"Because he has a deep understanding of magic and has spent the last several decades preparing for this."

"As have I."

"Because he's crafted a warrior to counter you. A warrior strong enough to erode a troll's statue in an instant."

"And that is what they told me before I caught him in Persia. It didn't stick."

No matter what you say, he has a counter. Some pithy response to dash your words aside. Appealing to family had an effect, so lets see how he reacts to this.

"Because the mother of the men he killed is able to do it, to wait and act rationally, so why aren't you?"

His eyes threaten to bore straight through you as his jaw clenches tight enough that broken teeth are a distinct possibility.

"Tell me his name."

"Not until you promise me that you won't act rashly."

Through gritting teeth, he manages to force out a 'fine.' "I promise that I won't act rashly."

"It's Horra."

You were expecting rage. You were expecting a trembling fist. You were expecting fire and yelling.

What you weren't expecting, however, was for him to go slack. For him to relax and breath calmly, steadily.

After all, you were just confirming something he already suspected.

"You have two years. When the winter turns to summer and the year becomes three, I will remove the threat to my family with or without the blessing of the law."

With that, he turns, leaves the building, and screams until his throat gives out.

'Frankly, that's actually an improvement to how he was when he was young.'
