Ah well, I guess I'll close it now

  • [X] Tell Halfdan we have something important to talk to him about privately that won't really wait, and proceed with the conversation as planned (including all privacy measures), sounding him out about what happened with the Hading Witch and (more importantly, but related) his current situation with regards to being connected with Dorri. Assuming he has no existing oaths of loyalty or similar things with Dorri, tell him the truth about that situation (likely via Eyespeech), as was already the plan. If he does have existing oaths to Dorri, our response depends on what those oaths are.

Rolling.
Oshha threw 12 6-faced dice. Total: 41
5 5 3 3 5 5 1 1 3 3 2 2 5 5 2 2 3 3 4 4 4 4 4 4

9 successes on the dice. 16 with Social, 21 with the 5 Odr, probably plus 1-2 more due to Friendly and other stuff, but right around there. Definitely at the Superior level of success for 21+.

Actually, wait, we have shapeshifts giving us bonus dice. There should be 2 more dice there (well, on all social rolls, really). Probably doesn't matter this time, but we should remember that going forward...

I'll need another social check, please. This time it'll be for your ability to change the narrative about you

That's not bad, but it's not great either, 6 before bonii. I think that'll still shake loose to Fine after everything applies?

That's 6 successes, so 13 after Social, probably 14 due to Friendly, 19 after Odr (assuming we spend 5, as has been mentioned a few times...I might've been inclined to spend more, but we're post roll), which we'd definitely spend another 5 on. Also, I'll roll the Shapeshift dice on that one, since they're actually pretty likely to be relevant.

EDIT: Okay, yeah, that takes it to 21 after Odr not counting Friendly or other bonus successes (probably 22 to 24 counting those).
DeadmanwalkingXI threw 2 6-faced dice. Reason: Shapeshift Dice Total: 9

Halfdan (Social: 9) 21 Successes
"Come in!" Halfdan's voice greets you mere moments after your knuckles tapped against his front door. Normally, you wouldn't need to knock—a result of the extreme friendship found between you and him—but today you're feeling extra polite. After all, you've got some heavy thoughts that need voicing and it wouldn't do to start off on the wrong foot.

Stepping through the door, you're treated to the sight of Halfdan and his daughters sitting around the hearth. His daughters—Ausva and Arnvi—are near mirror-images, as is only fitting for twins of the identical sort. The only real difference is in how they've shaped their brown locks—Ausva has her hair twisted into spirals while Arnvi wears her hair in curls.

The jovial smile on Halfdan's face slips away the moment he sees the look on yours. His eyes dart to his daughters, who stiffen as tension fills the air. "Arnvi, Ausva, can you check on your brothers? Make sure they haven't fallen in the lake again?"

Arnvi glances between you and her father, a worried look creasing her face as her fingers find her sister's hand, "Dad... Don't be stupid."

"I won't," his smile doesn't reach his eyes as his daughters nod and make their exits. He watches their backs until the door closes in their wake and his eyes fall to you. Leaning in, he plants his elbows on his knees as he stares you dead in the eye, "Alright, Halla, what've you got for me?"

Taking a seat across his way, you decide to cut right to the chase, "What do you know about the Hading Witch?"

A sharp gust of wind escapes his nostrils as he nods, "Dorri asked me to kill her, so I did." He shrugs, leaning back in his chair, "I owed him a favor for gifting me this land," he wiggles a hand in a tight circle, "and he called it in with that."

'That was... Surprisingly easy.' Blackhand, as usual, has the right of it.

Blinking your shock away, you shake your head and lean in with brows furrowed and confusion writ on your face, "Did he say why?"

"Nope," Halfdan pops the 'p' as he shakes his head, "just that he wanted her dead." He scratches at his cheek as he thinks for a moment, "Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think he knew why he wanted her dead either. Odd, I know, but Dorri's been acting oddly these past few years."

"How so?"

Halfdan shrugs, "Just, you know, more agitated, irritable. He actually struck Folkmarr for interrupting him!"

"That's... Odd." To tell the truth, you're not really sure if that's out of character for Dorri or not. From the few times you've interacted with the man, he seems to be a more level-headed sort—even if you have a mountain-sized grudge against him.

"Quite," Halfdan nods before changing the subject, "Now, is there anything else you wanted to talk to me about? I'm happy that you came by, don't get me wrong, but I do have business I need to discuss with me daughters."

"I heard about that, yeah," you quickly pick up your slack and carry on, "I'm planning on killing Dorri, so I'll have to ask that you not marry either of your daughters to his son."

Halfdan blinks, "Well... I suppose that is a good reason to deny Dorri's request." He purses his lips as he runs hand through beard, "it won't be easy to kill him, but I assume you're working on a plan."

"Just... Just like that?" You'd been preparing this big speech about needing to kill Dorri, dammit! "You haven't even asked me why!"

"Do I need to?" He shrugs, shoulders lifting up and dropping down, "I swore friendship with you. If Dorri is your enemy, than so too is he mine."

As far as you can tell, Halfdan is telling the entire truth. Which, honestly, is quite refreshing given the constant mindgames you've been playing with yourself regarding Dorri and his schemes.

All in all, a productive meeting with Halfdan.

It took some effort, but you managed to twist your image to a more positive one—quite the feat, given your already sterling reputation.

The man with the leaky roof happily invited you to his home. Upon doing so, you immediately found yourself harassed by the presence of a rather mischievous spirit. It probed your outer defenses, but was driven off by some of your more rambunctious denizens—the hunter even took a bite out of it!

The spirit doesn't seem to be especially complex, just a mass of rushing spirit-water and nothing more. It has a one track mind through and through.

After you gathered some more information and returned home, you found yourself greeting another petitioner of aid.

Lorfi Chickenman, from another Jarldom over, has come to ask you about a problem he's having. He and his family keep coming down with a strange disease. It isn't fatal, but it is miserable to deal with.

The symptoms are as follows:
-Diarrhea
-Stomach cramps
-Fever
-Nausea
-Vomiting

He wants you to figure out what the issue is and provide a solution.

What do you do?

AN: God, I'm so sorry this took so long to get out. Just having something of a creative drought right now with NorseQuest, I suppose.

Also sorry that this one is so mid.

No moratorium.

A bit short, but seemed fine to me. Does that mean we'll be paying the weregild as part of the next update? It's not an action, so it's not a problem if something delayed it, but Corpsemaker did say it was imminent...

Oh, also, @Imperial Fister did our Fleinn and Bolt Thrower turn out okay? If they work as intended, that's fine, just making sure. And what about the coffee mug? That's mostly a flavor thing, but did we manage to make it? What about our Alloy Attempt (Fight Of Your Life + Stoker State)? Looking back, we also tried to improve Sagaplate and never got a result. I don't think we found out how any of that ancillary stuff went...

Also, relevantly, how many of our retainers shields got broken during the battle? We should replace those and knowing how many need replacing seems relevant (the below plan assumes at least 5, which seems likely).

In any case, here's my tentative turn plan. No idea on poor Chickenman, I'm sure we can come up with something? It doesn't have good ideas for the two Training Items Runes (and might ditch those entirely if we can't think of any) but something for training those does seem good (getting Gale to 3 and Atgeir to 6 are both quite useful to us in different ways).

"He has a chicken perched on top of his head. Nobody is brave enough to call attention to it."
To cure his chronic problems, we need to address this so that his food and clothing are no longer chronically contaminated. In other words, to get him out of this chickenshit outfit.

Halfdan is such a bro.
His absolute willingness to do a murder without asking why as long as he owes you a favor or is your friend definitely comes in handy.

For us and for Dorri.

I don't know if i find Halfdan loyalty endearing or disturbing.

Like, he jumps straight to murder without hesitation.

What if this wasn't the real Halla but somebody disguised as Halla trying to manipulate him?

Asking a few more question might have been a good idea there Halfdan....

I want to capture it and bring it into our Soulscape.

Halfdan really brings the concept of Ride or Die friends to a whole new level.

One of this days we should see if the skogtatt is still araound and what we can get from it.

Also, we still need to visit our troll-like neighbor in his cave.

To be fair, since Halla didn't actually show any signs of planning to go off and kill Dorri immediately, there'd be time for Halfdan to check for deception later. It's not as if we're asking him to immediately go try to kill Halfdan right now.

Options:

1) Food/Water Poisoning
2) Spirits
3) Curse

It's not a transmissible disease as only his family is suffering from it.

Couldn't be transmissible, but could theoretically be genetic.

But actually, from symptoms, I think they may just have bad water at their place.
Can't be genetic as if it was genetic it would have been a 'from birth' thing, and his marriage partner wouldn't be suffering from it. Also his children would not have a 100% suffer rate unless he got really unlucky with genetic rolls.

Mmm. Maybe, we don't technically know how universal it is in his family, but you're probably right. Like I said, I suspect the water, as those are straight up the symptoms of dysentery. Better food-related hygiene may also be useful.

Thinking about it, given his name, it's probably the hygiene thing...he probably has a whole lot of chickens, which are not the cleanest animals.

So, if a magic solution is required, a potion to wash the chicken areas that also disperses any disease spirits? Assuming there are those, my spiritology is woefully Hellenistic.

Can't hurt but if it's dysentery the basic thing that needs to be cleaned are the people themselves and the food prep area before prepping food. It's doing that without cleaning up that'd be the most likely culprit.
