they are eeves, huh?
could we feed them tools to get an artisan or something like that, i wonder....
Kinda sad the 3 base types vanished, but that's evolution, i guess? which has come from which though?
Hire someone or send a retainer, but it's Winter so that probably needs to be done in the first turn of next year.
we will need to go and talk with Gabriel too, so we could do the two at once.

--[X] ??? – 1 Research
should we try to alloy our Fylgja with something?

also, for a firestorm trick, there was that idea for a firefly field. Not useful alone, aside from better battlefield illumination but would be a great setup for setting stuff on fire or to feed into flamecalling later on... could also be interesting with Fanned Flames.

The three types are still around. They're different evolutionary paths from the 'base' version than these ones are.

IF has requested we chill out and not take any trips personally for a bit.

For the Fylgja, maybe, but probably not the same turn we hit Fylgja 10.

For Firestorm, it's worth noting (and confirmed by IF on Discord) that a single shield stops the whole Trick, so we don't want to invest in it too heavily.

Can we get Inverted Standstill if we don't already know what Inverted Standstill does, and Inverted Forgefire if we know what it does?

I brought up in discord whether we should go greet those new farms with gifts of whale meat before Winter hits. If possible, I feel like a social action of

[ ] (Social) Greet the new farmers in the Hading, taking a gift of whale meats to each one as a welcome present.

I'm not sure on Norse norms for it, but giving food as a gift for new neighbors is a fairly standard thing in most cultures even from ancient times, since it helps them to focus on getting their household in order after a change, without needing to focus on food.

Obviously this would be a big gift, 1 food is like a month's eating for a person. But it seems... good to establish ourselves as neighborly. And just being helpful to people is nice.

We can potentially do both these as well as Campfire eventually. Dunno about this turn...maybe Standstill if we don't come up with anything else for the final research.

We (for the collective meaning of 'we' anyway) already gave away a crap load of food turn before last (over 4000 got distributed through the valley). This seems likely to be very unneeded this turn specifically. Meeting people at the Thing and then maybe helping out anyone who needs it seems more productive.

Stutter Step training
0~0~0

This idea of yours shows merit, that much is certain as you zip across the pockmarked training grounds—a field of low-fertility ground that you've long used for training purposes. Once, the field was relatively flat and had a few copses of trees to call its own. Now, however, it's a crater-filled moonscape of land covered in broken piles of splinters and more battle-forged hillocks than the eye can see.

Your lungs burn as you take solitary steps in frozen space. With time stuttering around you, you move where others cannot, but your lungs and body simply refuses to go any further than single steps. No matter how hard you try, your feet take you no further.

It seems, for the time being, you'll only be able to take single steps with this 'Stutter Step' technique of yours, though that's all you'll need in most fights. Burns through orthstirr like a furnace, though, so that's something you ought to keep in mind.

(Stutter Step (Cost per step 28 Orthstirr/6 Odr): Allows you to take steps in frozen, stuttering time as many times per round as you have steps. You can only manage one step at the current time. (Refined: 1/6))

Huzzah!

Unfortunately, despite the cleverness of your ideas, it seems that Firestorm is simply too unruly to deign to being corralled into a formation like the Flame-Tending Blade or even Thermic Reckoning.

(I'll refund that reward dice)

Would this have worked if we used a Rewrite on it, out of curiosity?

Bartholomew, as a teacher, is tough but fair—the toughest you've ever had, in fact! Where other teachers allow you to ask off-topic questions, Bartholomew has no patience for any such perceived laziness.

Brother Bartholomew:

View: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tA8LjcpjjKQ

"And your sister, what of her?" Eager to not lose the moment, you slide another bowl your way before digging in.

Bartholomew's face twists into a deep frown as he sighs once more, "Died in childbirth, I'm afraid. A surprise set of triplets were two-too-many for my dear Anne. As I was captured as war-booty in a raid not long after, I haven't any idea as how her husband, Godwin Blackstone, cared for the children. I can only hope that he accepted them as his, for I suppose I shall find out when I return."

Your spoon clatters against the once-more empty bowl as you hear that name. Blackstone? Like Gabriel Blackstone?

Blackhand's chuckles echo in your head, 'The world is a shockingly small place, sometimes.'

AN: Not super happy with this one, but it's the first turn back in the saddle of normal turns so I'll allow it.

Also, I'll not be rolling random events for a few years in an effort to give you folks some downtime. To help with this, I'll ask that you folks not go on any voyages as that will be super intensive and I'd like a break from that for a bit. You can assign people to go on voyages in your stead, though, and they'll not be rolling any danger rolls or anything like that—unless you overuse it.

25-minute moratorium.

Uhhhh... did we do the spying on Dorri?

Any idea on mechanical effects?

It can be used as a conditional defense against anything one step could avoid (so most melee attacks and some ranged ones, and it's conditional, so it avoids Puncture), or to give the enemy a penalty on their defense as you are suddenly attacking from a different angle. Plus anything else you could use a one step teleport for (it's not technically a teleport, but in practice...).

It's very good, if pricey.

When Bartholomew leaves should we try to use him as a messenger to tell Gabriel that Steinnar is dead? He's probably going to the Blackstones at some point anyway and it seems kind of a dick move to let Gabriel show up in a few years ready for battle if we can avoid it.

We 100% should, yes, along with telling him we're friends with his relative. We should probably send an actual letter.

Minor Plan Changes:

-Swapped out two Arm Rings for additional tools to max out our 'soft cap' on Work Dice going forward (we'll still complete the fill number next turn).
-Added some Odr to our crafting on the Pot and Abjorn's Arm Rings.
-Added inverting Standstill as a Research action...we may swap that out, but it's better to have something there than nothing.

[X] Plan Crafting, Surveillance, and the Thing

Looks like a good plan to me.

The action economy is really becoming crazy this turns.

We still have so many things we can do and never enough time.

We can chill out a little since we're getting at least a year off from random events. We still need to craft some stuff for our newly acquired retainers, but that, investigating Dorri (which is Travel actions, it sounds like, and thus limited) and social actions are the main needed things...some sparring and maybe dealing with the skogtatt are also on the list, I suppose.

Yeah, seems fine to me. If we have time we could also check on Jurgen, we never returned to talk with him.

And also maybe ask Halfdan if he knows what happened to the Witch.

What do the Snake and Frog Fylgjur do?

Snake actually helps with wealth acquisition. It's great, and was one of our options. It's just also associated with Loki and other shadier stuff.

Dunno about Frog, though Kurt didn't actually seem upset.

EDIT:
Wait. I'm an idiot. We speak Latin now, the final Research action should obviously be studying the Knightly Armor. Duh. Added to the plan in place of the Campfire thing.

Will we unveil the Fylgja of our other retainers next turn then? And maybe offer Infusions again?

Don't beat yourself up, with all the stuff we have in the backlog its normal to forget abaout a few things.

We automatically do the Fylgja reveals next turn, yeah...we'll probably do another offer of Infusions eventually but that's probably not for free.

I'm good now. I'm not super upset about it or anything.

EDIT:
@Imperial Fister a series of relevant questions to the next few turns:

1. Can we in fact start learning Greek from Halfdan? Would that be Research?
2. Should we invest more than 1 Research into either learning Greek or the Nordic Armor? If so, how much can we invest into either in one turn?
3. What kind of Tools do Steinby and Halfdanby have? Are they all at least Grand Forged Iron tools or the equivalent?
4. What kind of magic weapons would all our new Retainers like? What kind of magic metals and Runes?
5. Is making a metal bow something we could do?

Halfdan barely speaks Greek. Enough to buy a loaf of bread and find his way to the nearest latrine, but he mostly just associated with other Norsemen during his time in the Guard as he was on campaign for 90% of his two-year stint.
2. Should we invest more than 1 Research into either learning Greek or the Nordic Armor? If so, how much can we invest into either in one turn?
It's not a matter of how much you research, but how you research.
3. What kind of Tools do Steinby and Halfdanby have? Are they all at least Grand Forged Iron tools or the equivalent?
Nobody is going to turn down more tools, because tools, no matter the quality, eventually wear out and break.
4. What kind of magic weapons would all our new Retainers like?
'Magic swords' is the most common answer, though Kare actually already has magical equipment from an escapade in Jorvik—he looted a magical sword from a pond after beating up a strange water spirit lady.

No, it's not the magic pond lady sword.
5. Is making a metal bow something we could do?
Yes, but it's not going to be better than a wooden bow. According to light googling, metal bows can't put as much velocity behind an arrow as a wooden bow can.

Check. All that makes sense.

Interesting. Does Kare already have Mail Armor? Does anyone else among our new retainers?

Yes, but it's not going to be better than a wooden bow. According to light googling, metal bows can't put as much velocity behind an arrow as a wooden bow can.

Would it be equally good, or actively worse? We're better at making metal things, which is why I ask.

Kare does, as well as a few bits of scale he won in a drinking game.

If you want a bow made of metal, crossbows are what you use. Physics just aren't on metals' side in terms of archery.
