Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

The Oscars of 81
The Oscars of 81:

The Oscars were becoming, a spectacle and it was something that you were honestly not here for. At all.

"Can't they just tone this down to make it a private industry party instead of this spectacle?" you found yourself saying as your friends, and Mike Eisner, all took their places near each other. Carrie, in her infinite and unbridled wisdom, said that you could spend time with your friends, and she would watch the kids.

Such a thing you thought was what she planned for all along, and she wanted you to suffer something that she had suffered for many years. Or she just wanted to take the kids to headquarters and slip in one of the scripts she wrote for something so she can win another Oscar. She did mention that she was interested in blowing people away again.

Who knows?

But you and George were both taking a deep breath and just… taking it all in.

"They barely nominated us for best picture!" You proclaimed as you looked at the finalists. "They nominated Blade Runner for goodness sake! Blade Runner! And they hated it!"

"At least you have a best director nod," George said. "I mean, maybe you're looking at this a little too…" George then stopped talking, realizing what was going through your head. "The Academy has… strictures. We blow them away, but they don't see it because they think that mass entertainment is bad for the prestige of the academy."

Mike for his part, was laughing. "Well, I know for a fact that if we get a best picture win again, they can't ignore Lucasfilms anymore. Half-baked idiots."

"Mike, didn't you have to lobby half the academy to even get Star Wars onto the ballot?" George said.

"Wait, why wasn't I informed of that?" You asked. "Mike, are you doing things behind my back?"

"Only your back, not George's." He said with a smile. "You nearly got assassinated a few months ago, and you needed to be with your family, not playing Hollywood politics. Plus Martin here wanted to make a lot of noise… and they didn't give him anything. Even with me threatening them all with fraud if they didn't get arguably the best film ever made on the ballot." He smiled. "Once I threatened to expose how the Academy votes for things, well you would see the Oscars lose it's prestige… for all time."

That earned a smile. "Wait you threatened to expose how the Oscars are chosen and nominated?"

Mike smiled. "Yep. Shut them right up."

"Did they change it?" You asked.

"They will if I have anything to say about it." Mike replied. "I've been petitioning the Academy for years to expand the awards to include a few new awards. Most popular, and For best visual effects."

"Ones we'd obviously sweep." You said.

"Well I wouldn't say that, but it would help with me trying to get more… well less power."

"You want less power?" George asked.

"I want more money George, I care about keeping the lights on, more than I do about little statuettes," Mike replied. "That is how I see it."
--------------------------

Star Wars Nominations: D10 => 5

Holy Hell, Mike was not kidding about using his influence to get Star Wars Nominated. But you were not nominated, or anyone.

Special Award for Best Visual Effects: Autopass

ILM proved they were the masters of special effects and this award was taken for the entire Team, but it was delivered to Brian Johnson and Dennis Murin. Both men said they were going to take it back to ILM headquarters and add it to a new room for their awards.
-----------------------------------------

Best Original Score:

Fame:D100 + 20 => 91
Altered StatesD100 => 84
Empire: D100 => 90
Tess:D100 => 69

And the Oscar for Best Original Score is:

Fame, by Micheal Gore.

The slimmest of margins of victory was how it was decided… John Williams lost by one vote.

But it was still a victory for MGM, whom everyone thought was dead… however, it seems that Kirk was doing something incredible. He was bringing back MGM from the dead, without any sort of baggage from the past… and all that money you gave him allowed him to do everything and anything he wanted.

Hell… you didn't see that coming.
------------------------------------------

Best Sound:

Empire: D100 + 20 => 86
Altered States:D100 => 68
Coal Miners Daughter:D100 => 39
Fame:D100 => 30
Blade Runner:D100 => 86

Who wins: D2 => 1

"And the Oscar for Best Sound goes to… Well, I'm going to be honest, this is a surprise. Empire Strikes Back, Bill Varney, Steve Maslow, Gregg Landaker and Peter Sutton."

You learned that there were two envelopes, one for Blade Runner and one for Star Wars, and that they had an exact tie. And that the envelope that was chosen on the night would be the final vote, cast before the live studio audience. Because no one wanted to change their vote.

And once it made headlines and it made people even more excited to watch the Oscars. Because there were real-life plot twists.
----------------------------------------------------

Interrupt, Best Foreign Film!

Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears:D100 + 20 => 41
Confidence:D100 => 91
Kagemusha:D100 => 99
The Last Metro:D100 => 26
The Nest:D100 => 11

And the Oscar for Best Foreign Film Goes to… Kagemusha, directed by Akira Kurasawa!

America, and the Academy's love affair for Kurasawa was at its full peak. There was almost nothing that anyone could say or deny it. They wanted to give the main his praise, and they all wanted.

He won and won handily. But he did not come to accept it, not without waiting for the place to be silent.
-------------------------------------------------------

Back to Star Wars:

Best Director:
Robert Redford – Ordinary People: D100 + 20 => 71

David Lynch – The Elephant Man:D100 => 74

Bruce O'Brian- Star Wars Empire Strikes Back:D100 => 51

Richard Rush – The Stunt Man:D100 => 56

Roman PolanskiTess:D100 => 14

Yet out of everything that surprised you, there was an upset that everyone didn't see coming.

"And the Oscar for Best Director goes to… David Lynch, The Elephant Man!"

And you knew that despite Mike pestering… There was always going to be people who loved… the underdog.

And David Lynch was one of those guys.

------------------------

Best Picture:

Ordinary People:D100 + 20 => 66
Coal Miners Daughter:D100 => 64
The Elephant Man:D100 => 72
Star Wars Empire Strikes Back:D100 => 87
Tess:D100 => 17

"And the Oscar for Best Picture Goes to…" There was a smile on Johnny's face. "My favorite movie of the Year, Star Wars Empire Strikes Back! George Lucas, Gary Kurtz, Bruce O'Brian, and Mike Eisner Producing!"

Holy Hell…

That made up for Star Wars getting robbed by Rocky.

As you and the others walked up, George only smiled as he grabbed the microphone. "You know, You're probably going to hear more words from me, right now, than what Bruce and all the actors on Star Wars heard in about three months."

There was laughter as Mike took it looked out and pointed. "Hey, Sid… guess what, I won, guess who is laughing now."

Sid Shineburg was in the crowd, and something that was only known to him and Mike was on his face.

He was furious.

And Gary said nothing, handing over the mic to you.

I got to say I thought we were going to get a malus for this Oscar's because they hated us and. That would lead to a backlash that would probably end the Oscar's awards

Remember all those pages ago, when Mike Rolled a nat 100.

This was the results.
I'm guessing Scorsese's film will get a chance next for the Oscar season?

Also, two questions; if I choose the option for Hironobu to join us, can we still have Steve Dawson to work with him?

And also, can I get a hint as to what "My Final Fantasy" would give us?

if we make the usa focus it's drug wars into South America what will happen

Nothing, because A) no drug wars (well, no "war on drugs") are happening (we prevented that whole idea from being a thing) and B) we don't have the ability to force that sort of thing.

Wouldn't mind choosing this, but why Coal Miner's Daughter? Bruce never really expressed an interest in it before.

Looking it up OTL these Oscars got delayed a day due to Reagan getting shot.
Is there no assassination attempt?

It was only delayed by a single day so the Oscars would have happened in this turn irregardless. I actually do have an Omake I'm working on right now that butterflies away the Hickley assassination attempt through Bruce's intervention. Nothing fantastical like Xsplora's Beatles omake, but a more natural butterfly thanks to Jodi Foster being Batgirl, where she confides her harassment to Bruce from Hickley and he gets her help.

Goose and the Joes must rise to the occasion and fight for freedom before Cobra succeeds in their schemes.

Episode 1 (Hour long special)

Our introduction to the world of G.I Joe. Riley O'Brian is dealing with the nanomites as a Green Beret, defending it when the MARS research facility is "under attack" by Cobra. MARS at this point is a British contractor aligned with NATO publicly, but Destro is a devious arms dealer selling to both sides, with main allegiance to Cobra. Destro got backing by NATO to develop nanomites but the Cobra attack is to provide a cover for the nanomites falling into Cobra hands.

Riley at the beginning is shown to be a bit arrogant and hotheaded, yearning for the battlefield. When battle comes, Riley actually does decently in fighting Cobra, but his unit is overwhelmed and Riley's best friend dies taking a bullet meant for Goose. Riley launches a grenade at Major Bludd, though not shown direct shrapnel hits Bludd's left eye, giving him his eyepatch later.

When all hope is lost, G.I Joe arrives at the battle and turns the tide and saves the day. Main focus is Snake Eyes, Duke, Scarlett, are stars of the show. G.I Joe drives Cobra off and takes possession of the nanomite warheads, much to Destro's secret annoyance.

Riley attends a funeral for his unit and partakes in carrying the coffin and folding the flag of his best friend. Hawk attends funeral to give condolences, and approaches Riley and recruits him to G.I Joe. Riley, eager for vengeance against Cobra accepts enthusiastically.

We see a glimpse of Cobra operations and learn of Cobra Commander. Commander is irate at Bludd for failing at retrieving the warheads, and is angry at G.I Joe for foiling his machinations. Though he consoles himself that for now G.I Joe will be complacent, allowing Cobra to further their machinations in the shadows. Destro contacts Commander, revealing his true allegiances (Destro wearing his iron mask when working with Cobra while without as James McCullen) and promises a new class of weapons and vehicles for Cobra to decimate G.I Joe. Commander contacts Baroness, and orders her to commit the second phase of the plan where they shall retake the warheads, Baroness being joined by Storm Shadow.

Riley arrives at G.I Joe Base with other Joe recruits. The prominent recruits are mainly the Joes from the 1983 toyline save for Gung-Ho and Ace who are already a part of G.I Joe. Riley first meets Wild Bill and they hit it off. Riley also meets Cover Girl and their meeting is sort of similar to Flint and Lady Jaye's comic meeting with Riley's bravado and flirtatious greeting making Cover Girl think he's a jerk. Hawk addresses the recruits and gives an inspiring speech and everyone is given cover names. Riley is dismayed to learn he's Goose.

Goose undergoes training as a G.I Joe. Due to his previous service and experience, he thinks it'll be a breeze but is stumped by the harsh training regimen of G.I Joe as well as their very unorthodox culture and operations, especially with an emphasis on multi-skills. Goose starts off at the bottom of the recruit list with the recruits being trained by Duke with Stalker, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett and Gung-Ho helping, Gung-Ho especially acting like the stereotypical drill sergeant. Scarlett sees some potential in Goose but Duke is dismissive, thinking he's not a team player, but Stalker points out that he sees many similarities with Duke's brother which he dismisses.

Goose continues training with the Joes but it's a struggle as he tries to adapt, only proving to be exceptional in close quarters combat and linguistics. The other Joe recruits have various moments of success with Wild Bill being an exceptional flier and Cover Girl being an excellent tank driver and high quality mechanic. Goose continually places last and many recruits start to drop out.

Fearing that he is close to being kicked and wanting to prove himself, Goose challenges Snake-Eyes to a duel until one is knocked out. Most Joes see it as stupid because none of the recruits have been able to touch Snake-Eyes, but Hawk allows it. The fight is intense with Snake Eyes having clear superiority with Goose struggling to keep up and taking many hard hits, but he keeps on fighting and refusing to back down. Through grit and trickery, Goose manages to land a single sucker punch on Snake-Eyes, astonishing everyone but then is quickly knocked out.

In the infirmary, Goose is treated by Doc who admonishes Goose for his recklessness and selfish desire to be the best. Goose breaks down and confesses that he's trying to be the best not to be better than everyone, but to avenge his fallen comrades and never be as weak as he was against Cobra. Hawk approaches, revealing he was listening, and informs that the point of the recruitment process is not to see who is the best Joe, but to see if they belong on a team. Every recruit is tested on what they'll add to the greater unit and how crucial they can be as one part of Joe, because it's only together that Joes win battles, humbling Goose and making him think.

Episode 2

At the same time, Baroness and Storm Shadow are doing espionage stuff to prepare for a heist targeted at the Joes. Cobra Commander and Major Bludd lead Cobra in terror attacks across the globe to test their new vehicle and weapons for the next confrontation against G.I Joe.

A montage takes place with Goose now longer just working for himself but working with the other Joes, growing through the boards as he focuses on his strengths and aids the other recruits with their MOS while taking the time to learn from the experienced Joes. Goose bonds with the other recruits and makes peace with Cover Girl.

On the night before the end of the recruit's training, Cobra launches their operation. Baroness infiltrates the Pit as a Pentagon staffer, meets Goose during the mission, some flirting exchanged while she's in disguise. Goose comments that the disguised Baroness seems familiar while she distinctly recognizes Goose but tries to pretend they don't know each other. Stormshadow and Cobra Ninjas infiltrate the base and disable many of the defenses and security.

Baroness knocks out Breaker and steals the codes for the nanomites. Cobra Commander personally leads a raid on the Base with Cobra vanguard to distract the Joes. Stormshadow and ninjas continue sabotage but are stopped by Snake Eyes, two have a badass swordfight.

Scarlett notices something is off about Baroness and follows her, catching her in theft. Two battle with Baroness narrowly managing to overcome and fleet with the warheads, but Scarlett warns the Joes of her treachery. Goose intercepts and fights with Baroness, finally recognizing her and trying to talk but Baroness simply fights him and refuses to engage. Goose nearly captures Baroness but is foiled by the intervention of Storm Shadow who beats Goose and escapes with Baroness. Cobra Commander retreats with the warheads secure, having done considerable damage to the Pit but also receiving heavy damage in return.

Episode 3

G.I Joe recovers in the wake of Cobra attack. The recruits are a bit shaken due to having been suddenly thrust into combat, but they receive support from the veteran Joes who help them process with many being commended for their bravery.

A debriefing occurs with Goose lying and mentioning that he doesn't know the Baroness, though we see in a flashback that they knew each other previously in college. Concurrently, Baroness is confronted by Stormshadow on their relations with Baroness revealing that they had previously dated in college but affirming that he was a stupid old fling, though visibly not believing the words. The Flashback shows the two having broken up due to a combination of Goose's decision to join the Army and Baroness' radicalization into Cobra.

Hawk reveals that in order for nanomites to be armed, they have to be used in a particle accelerator and without it they are duds. G.I Joe is deployed at particle accelerators across the world while Stalker leads a mission to determine Cobra's next moves.

Goose and other recruits are made into official G.I Joes and Goose and some of the recruits are sent under Scarlett and Snake-Eyes to the British particle accelerator which is owned and operated by MARS. The rookies are sent because they believe the accelerator is the safest due to it being under British and MARS protection while the other experienced Joes are sent to more delicate sites. In secret, all the Mars and British forces present are actually Cobra in disguise with Cobra intending to use the MARS accelerator secretly to arm the warheads and get away with it.

Meanwhile, Stalker continues his mission and assaults a Cobra Base with Duke and Gung-Ho. When analyzing documents, they learn of MARS connection to Cobra and that Destro is actually James McCullen, MARS CEO. However, it's too late as Baroness and Stormshadow make their way to the MARS accelerator.

Their plan almost goes off perfectly but the pair are recognized (Goose realizes her perfume scent or something else comedic) and a chase ensues with Cover Girl driving the other Joes after them, Wild Bill following in a helicopter and Snake-Eyes on the ground. Chase goes about the same as the Paris scene in OTL Rise of Cobra minus power armor. Baroness shoots at Tower Bridge and it collapses thanks to nanomites, Goose disarms them but Baroness and Storm Shadow get away once more. Scarlett then directs the Joes to search and rescue to aid London in the wake of the attack.

With MARS connection revealed, Hawk leads a forceful nationalization of MARS across NATO territories, targeting Mars HQ in Virginia but Destro has long escaped. Destro is irate that his cover is blown but Cobra Commander is glad as no longer shall Cobra work in the shadows and now a new world order shall commence.

Episode ends as Cobra Commander makes a big speech to the world, announcing that he has the nanomites and declaring that if the world does not surrender to Cobra, then the capitols of the worlds Great Powers shall be targeted with the warheads, London only being a taste of what is to come.

Episode 4

Duke, Stalker and the others return to the Pit where they reveal the location of a Cobra missile site where they plan to launch the nanomites. The base is located on an island in the Indian Ocean that was purchased by MARS with the Cobra missiles having ICBM capabilities. The first third of the episode features some character stuff between the various Joes as they mentally prepare for the upcoming battle.

A pitched battle takes place with every Joe lending their part in an invasion of the missile launch site. This time having been prepared and launching in full force, G.I Joe displays a clear advantage in battle and continually bests their Cobra counterparts. Goose during the invasion performs slightly recklessly, struggling to maintain teamwork due to the trauma of his last battle and fearing that he'll lose his new friends. Goose sees Destro's presence and goes after him personally. While Goose is able to best Destro, he faces off against Cobra Commander who shows he's a skilled combatant and beats Goose, deciding to take him prisoner. The Joes manage to destroy the missile field and disarm most of the warhead, but the key Cobra leaders escape with a handful of warheads and Goose being captured.

The remaining Joes are distraught at the loss of Goose along with Snake Eyes who was seperated from everyone in the missile silos and is missing. In actuality, Snake Eyes secretly boarded the Cobra planes and is determined to rescue Goose. However, Storm Shadow notices his presence after they arrive at Cobra Temple in the Himalayas and due to overwhelming firepower, Snake Eyes is forced to flee and is injured.

Goose is thrown into a jail cell and is faced with Cobra Commander who boasts that everything that G.I Joe has done to this point has been superfluous as Cobra shall win the war.

Episode 5

Goose is interrogated by Cobra Commander who tries to corrupt Goose into joining Cobra. Goose is defiant and dismissive of Commander, who remarks that Goose wouldn't be the first hero to become a Cobra tauntingly. Here we learn of Cobra's ideology and gain some glimpses into Cobra Commander's character and past with hints of betrayal from America and hatred of the world's governments. Frustrated with Goose's defiance, Commander leaves.

Baroness enters the cell after and she has a quieter talk with Goose, with it being unclear if she's concerned or simply trying to convince him to defect like Commander. The two exchange dialogue over their allegiances and reasonings, Goose making a heartfelt plea for Baroness to surrender before it's too late. It's a tense confrontation, but ends with Baroness quietly giving Goose a form of aid to escape on his own when the right opportunity comes.

Meanwhile with Snake Eyes, he meets and befriends the wolf Timber and is able to escape the Himalayas, heading to India where he makes contact with G.I Joe. The Joes resolve to save Goose and end Cobra's reign of terror.

Meanwhile, Goose is fighting in gladiatorial pits for the Commander and Destro's pleasure but he remains defiant. Goose while fighting becomes tired and is whittled away with each challenge, but manages to win thanks to his training and remembering what the other Joes taught him. Throughout his ordeal, he takes careful observation of the facility and listens for Cobra's machinations, overhearing Commander's plans to recreate the Nanomites at Cobra Temple to act as a deterrent against G.I Joe's aggression.

The Joes launch an assault on Cobra Temple, catching Cobra off guard with Commander ordering Destro to arm the nanomite warheads to destroy G.I Joe's forces. Goose manages to free himself thanks to earlier aid from Baroness and runs into Cover Girl, Gung Ho and Stalker, the three having been sent to rescue him with Goose then informing them of the location of the nanomite facility with them racing off.

Snake Eyes does battle with Stormshadow once more nearly triumphing before Stormshadow's disguise is ruined and he reveals himself to a stunned Snake Eyes with Stormshadow cryptically commenting on how he will have justice for his father's murder, then plummeting to what looks to be his doom, but managing to escape.

Goose and the gang reach the weapons facility and proceed to do battle with the Cobra forces. Goose nearly has a chance to capture or kill Destro, but decides to prioritize the mission and well being of his Joes instead of revenge. Destro escapes, but the Joes get control of the warheads and Breaker reprograms the warheads to target all Cobra forces and then selfdestruct.

Cobra Commander faces off against Duke, the two being very evenly matched but Commander accounting for Duke's moves and managing to flee, although Scarlett is able to capture Cobra intelligence. Baroness rescues Cobra Commander, who vows that one day G.I Joe shall meet its end.

The Nanomites destroy all the Cobra gear with the remaining Cobras surrendering. While the Cobra leaders have escaped, Cobra has suffered a heavy blow and the Nanomites are no more. Goose is welcomed happily by the Joes with Hawk recommending a medal of valor, but Goose is adamant that he was only a soldier following orders and every Joe was responsible for today's victory. Duke then encourages Goose to lead them in battle cry with Goose beginning a cry of "Yo Joe!" shared by the other Joes.

A/N: Thus is the start of G.I Joe, a hopefully great core franchise of Lucasfilms. Huge thanks to @overmind for his contributions in this pitch and for getting me interested in GI Joe which has become sort of a lost childhood franchise that I wish I had watched growing up. Basic premise is the broad plot of OTL's live action movie, The Rise of Cobra and making it into a five part miniseries to replace the MASS Device while having the story be adapted in the setting of A Real American Hero along with Goose as a protagonist.

Question can we reveal the information that Mike has that would destroy the credibility of the Oscars?, I mean if my understanding of what the Oscars are and all the crap that is linked to them then the world of cinema would be better off without them?

Interrupt, Best Foreign Film!
Akira Kurasawa will be the third Japanees born person to have ever won an Oscar and the first ever Oscar for Best foreign film (the other being best Costume design in 1954 and Best supporting actress in 1957). And this thanks to LucasFilm, this will certainly increase the reputation of LucasFilm in Japan.

A small correction if I may, Toshiro Mifune due to our changes with Star Wars was the Third.

Best Supporting Actor goes to… Toshiro Mifune, Star Wars

On a more practical level I agree with you. From a Japanese film industry level if you want international recognition and awards you either work for or partner with Lucasfilm. not only do they give you the resources to make your dream happen you win fame and awards while doing it.

I suspect with the news of this latest Oscar Toho is again running an experiment to see if is possible to change the past by drinking enough alcohol and wishing hard. If they succeed, they will never have broken their deal with Lucasfilm and might be about to win an Oscar themselves. If they fail then at least they can drown their sorrows.

Oh and @Magoose they are both interesting but

[X]Bruce has a Miricle (Bruce has a miracle attributed to him, even though he thinks its not him.)

This one seems to have more story potential.

Satanic Panic VS a Living Saint with a verified miracle?

Whoops, then he's the fourth but still the first to gain 'Best Foreign Film'.

There's also the animation perspective, LucasFilm is your best bet to make a series an international success by dubbing and marketing it.

I guess ITL the LucasFilm/Toho partnership will be seen as the learning steps of a young LucasFilm into entering the Japanees/American markets and the complications/culture clashes between them. And for Toho a huge lesson to the dangers of greed and impatience.

So just to check among the cartoons that overmind been pitching (And quite excited to blow people away with Swat Kats if move quick enough people can say TMNT was inspired by it~) did atomic Betty and Fillmore make cut for production or did they only get points for something as reward?

Also, I'll get rewards for those omakes soon, the update is almost done.

Studio?... no.

I have full control over that. Whereas animation pitches? All yours.
Oh. But I do have some good animation pitches.
[]Square got... Something (Square shuts down, prompting one Hirinobo Sakaguchi to look for a new job, at Sunrise. Here he is picked up by... Lucasarts as one of its new Japanese Department heads)
I could see Final Fantasy being a Lucasfilm property ITTL.
Can be produced by Sunrise, Hanna Barbara, or Dreamworks.
I could see Sunrise working on that.

Cool! I could totally see myself watching that if I was a 80s kid.
There's also the animation perspective, LucasFilm is your best bet to make a series an international success by dubbing and marketing it.
Really? I wonder how the 90s and 2000s will hold up.
