Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

Would 5 Million be enough, or is it still too much?
Most Anime around this time didn't really have big budgets.

partially because they could scam their animators and pay them like Dogshit.

and also because anime at this time dosen't really scream quality.

it wasn't until the 80's till that happened.

...I know we joke around about how we're changing Japan for the better with our taking over Sunrise. Then I hear stuff like this and it makes me really sad.

Well, we're having a budget this time around. We're paying our animators what they deserve for their work, and we're having quality control to make sure it's at the Lucasfilms Unlimited standard we've set up.

So, for this to happen, how much would we need to pay? Or at the very least, how much was it paid for the Gundam series this time around?

now if you asking me, 5 million should be enough, because they have enough to pay everyone, some extra overtime budget, buying equipment, and all that fun stuff.

But something to remind you is that Sunrise also wants to do their stuff, and this will be the only show you will be able to make with them for a few years.

Perfect. I was afraid they would be dropping everything to do this. But if they can do this show, and still do their own thing, then I have no issues with it.

Besides, it gives me time and motivation to try and write a second season for it.

We're actually paying our animators a ridiculous amount of money with $70,000. Going by the inflation calculator that would be almost a salary of 295K in 2023. Those animators are living like royalty over in Japan.

and they deserve it, because they will literally increase the quality of the work they are doing because of it.

They will deserve it if we keep up the high quality animation, between Dreamworks and Sunrise.

The fun thing about Miraculous? Beyond almost certainly being better than the original
It has the potential to create or at lest be the precursor to the magical girl Genre

Remember sailor moon Doesn't exist yet.

Consider its tropes,
Artifact and magical transformation? check
Cute animal mascot? check
Strong female lead? check
Female interests such as relationships and fashion? check?
Decent combat not cutesy stuff? check

Cost of business to Do to Magical Girls the same as we did to Gundam being 5 million?
Sounds like a good deal to me.
Lets make history and Actually Pay animators what they are worth.

That's basically what inspired me to make it an anime instead of what they went for OTL.

Awesome! This would be something amazing to show at this moment in Japan, as it would be another collaboration between both American and Japanese styles and animators, not to mention taking on the genre of Magical Girls before it became truly popular and adding to it.

So, who would be credited for creating it, Sunrise or DreamWorks?

[X] Plan Low Key
What Film does Steve Direct:
-[X] Marathon Madness
-[X]Budget:20 Million
-[X]Producer: Francis Ford Coppola

What Film does Martin Direct:
-[X] Undercover
-[X] Budget: 10 Million
-[X] Producer: Mike Eisner

What Film does Brian Direct:
-[X] Small Giant
-[X] Budget: 20 Million
-[X] Producer: Francis Ford Coppola

What Film does Paul Direct:
-[X] The Bros
-[X] Budget: 10 Million
-[X] Producer: Francis Ford Coppola

What does Sunrise work on:
-[X] Miraculous
-[X]Budget: 5 Million

What Film does Dreamworks work on:
-[X] John Henry: Man of Steel
-[X] Budget: 40 million
-[X] Director: Brad Bird

I've kept Steve for Marathon Madness and Martin for Undercover. I think that with the success of Superman we may be able to tap into the fans if we promote the movie as the story of the real life Lois Lane. I've changed Brian's film to Small Giant and Paul's film to The Bros, adjusting the budgets appropriately.

For Sunrise, I don't think we should do Gundam yet. As Tomino said, there's chances fro more merchandise, movies, OVA's before we go for the sequel (Heck, in OTL they didn't go for it until 1986) so there's little need to saturate the market at the moment. I've changed it with Miraculous as Magoose did say that we can go with it, and gave it a 10 Million budget, but I'm clueless when it comes to budgets for Anime! So please, if anyone has a better idea of how much I should add please let me know.

Now, I do think we should do the John Henry movie, but there's no need to have Francis produce it as it would be DreamWorks doing it, so we can have the other Producing slot for Steve's film.

So, what do you think?

Like most of it as it's a pretty solid lineup, but just think the money can be switched around and I disagree with Martin being assigned Undercover. He could do good with it, but as I pointed out earlier Emerald Pimpernel is a better fit since it checks out pretty much all of his strengths and likes in terms of theming. If you're worried about losing the popularity of Lois, Superman II will be released in 1980 so it's not like she's going to fade out of the public eye and we'll still be able to cash in on her.

As for budgets, I think Marathon Madness can be dropped down to 15 million since most of the movie is going to show the guys running, although one could make an argument we need a big budget to account for historical props and recreating 1904 St. Louis. If you want to keep it 20 million I guess it's fine though we might be able to drop it to 15.

If you switch over to Emerald Pimpernel then I think a budget of 20-30 million would work out best since Schindler's List which is another Holocaust film and greater in ambition was made on $22 million with 90's money. Thankfully we can rely on Rome still having the same architecture and I'm sure Italy and the Vatican would love to work with us.

Since we're going to be doing a lot of Navy scenes then we might want to be more ambitious with Small Giant's budget. Would be willing to go up to 30-35 million but if you think that 20 million is better than I'll be okay with it.

Lastly for John Henry, that is way too much for an animated film. John Henry is a relatively grounded story so we don't need to go crazy with the animation. I would prefer 25 million like Hiawatha, highest I'm willing to go would be 30 million.

A Potential Interview from the Future (George Lucas on ABC with Peter Jennings, 1985)
A Potential Interview from the Future (George Lucas on ABC with Peter Jennings, 1985)

P.J: And now we continue our interview with a man who needs no introductions to anyone who has watched movies in the last ten years, George Lucas. Now George we talked a bit about your struggles to get work after THX was uh-

G.L: Unceremoniously put away for more fun and exciting fare even though it made money?

P.J: Yes.

G.L: Well it was quite disorienting. And worrying. Francis and I were trying to break in, and he had done it, but I have become rather disillusioned with the whole, Do something for the studios and we'll have a great ole time on it… and I just didn't want to. I wanted to do something I wanted, not what they wanted. So I found myself desperately trying to get money for Graffiti, and uh, the money was not there.

P.J: In came Bruce O'Brian? The man who I think everyone says without, your career would have been dead?

G.L: I wouldn't say that, maybe far more difficult, and a lot more personally challenging. (He sighed) But I think without Bruce, my career would not be where it is today.

P.J how did producing graffiti change the way you make movies? You always allude to how graffiti sets the tone for how you direct in the future.

G.L: Well for one thing, I had a really solid group of people behind me, Bruce and Gary and Harrison I think I'll never work without, if I can help it, and I think it was also the fact that this film really more than anything else, made me realize that I needed control of my movies, and how people will see my movies, I think that is the most important thing I learned on Graffiti.

P.J After Warner tried to shut it down?

G.L: Oh they didn't just try to shut it down, they tried to murder it. Francis was going to buy the film off me to get it released and Bruce raised hell like he always does to get the film done. After that, it was kinda… well, we got it done and the rest is history.

P.J: But what really drove you and Bruce to start Lucasfilms?

G.L: Everyone knows Bruce's famous declaration 'He wanted to burn it down' But there was far more to it than that. Bruce had seen the dark side of Hollywood in more ways than one. Everyone knows before the strike he saved ten lives on MASH, and he had a bitter feud with CBS before Miss Ball took over, but he just wanted to work. Be a professional, and they weren't letting him, and well, we decided it would be better. And I felt a kinship with that. And when he had the idea…well… I took it. Taking a risk that I will always make because I had him in my corner.

P.J And the fact the first film was Star Wars?

G.L: It actually wasn't the first film released. Star Wars was a promise we made on that day to get it made and released first. Then, we made the second-greatest decision we ever made besides producing Star Wars with our own money and hired Mike Eisner. He was the one who convinced Bruce, and later me, that Rocky was the film we had to make. And Sly Stallone deserved to star in it.

P.J: And that film robbed you of the best picture and director Oscar you could have had?

G.L: I have no hard feelings about that anymore because Sly is a good friend, and I think that people don't realize that the Academy wasn't ready for Star Wars to win that Oscar yet.

P.J: And did Bruce have a say in Star Wars? You know the rumors that he wanted to turn it into his own kind of picture?

G.L: No. That's a lie. Carrie was the best person whom we auditioned, and I think Bruce actually being Han really expanded how we do things later in Empire, and I think it was the right decision to cast both of them. People can call it what they want, but they brought something real to the future romance that was expanded upon in my later movies. Mark being chosen, out of everyone there, I think was a… Truly a remarkable thing that barely anyone talks about. Everyone talks about Bruce, Carrie, and Mifune when it comes to the original Star Wars… But I think Mark was the most important casting there, without any question. He was perfect, he was Luke Skywalker. And it surprised me a lot that he was not nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor.

P.J: And that helped you with the story and the other Star Wars films?

G.L Yes.

P.J In a moment we'll be right back, we will be finding out more about George's new movie, one that everyone has been talking about, a Collaboration between friends, Indian Jones, and the Temple of Doom.

G.L Oh not Bruce's new movie, I wanna talk about that one!

AN: I'm lifting my ban on future omakes.

Brandon Thirteen and Hating it.
Brandon Thirteen and Hating it.

Brandon Lee was thirteen and hated it. He sat in a room in a Hollywood mansion, angrily flipping through a worn photo album. Shelves full of Martial arts training videos and acting manuals looked down on him in silent judgment. Neatly completed homework had been shoved to the side, and the stupid cat lay across his shoulders purring while the equally stupid dog leaned comfortingly against his side. Brandon didn't appreciate their presence. He just didn't want to upset them by pushing them off.

Mary had been confiscated by her mother not long ago for her nap, and it was still more than an hour until Bruce was scheduled to get back to take Brandon through the next lot of exercises. So Brandon was left with nothing to do but flick through photos of a lost past and hate the world.

Brandon hated his mom and, moving from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, hated being forced to leave friends and family behind. He hated that the food and the weather here in LA were different. That People spoke English instead of Cantonese. He hated the other kids at school who looked down on him, called him a liar and picked on his sister. He hated that his body was changing, and punches and kicks learned under his father's tutelage no longer felt right. He hated his father for not being around, for dying, and not being there to protect Brandon, his mother or his sister (not that he needed protection, really). He especially hated Bruce O'Brian because He made everything look easy like he had won at life. Specifically that he had won at Brandon's life.

Brandon had trained with his father since he could walk. Bruce was better than Brandon despite only learning Jeet Kune Do as a teenager. Bruce had internalized the lessons and philosophy so well that he had made a personal variation that was flashy enough to use in the movies and flexible enough to win the Olympics and beat the world heavyweight boxing champion in the ring. Brandon had made no real progress since his father's death. Bruce had made it big as a movie star, boxing legend, and Movie studio owner that everyone seemed to know had gotten his start with Bruce Lee's help. Brandon was regularly told that he was just some poser pretending to be Bruce Lee's kid. Bruce set up the Gym that bore his father's name and had his mother run it. Brandon was constantly in trouble with anyone in authority and was always told he was a disgrace to his father's memory. Brandon hated that some days, the voices of his accusers felt like they were Right. He even hated that he loved Star Wars. Brandon hated that this father would have probably loved it, too. Brandon hated that he was sometimes glad that this father was dead, so he would never know just how much Bruce succeeded without him and how much Brandon screwed up without him there. Brandon hated that he wished he was Bruce O'Brian.

It wasn't supposed to be like this. Brandon's dad was only 32 when he died. His dad was supposed to be still here, a Hollywood legend only growing in fame, busy making incredible movies. He was supposed to share these experiences with his son and be available for advice and guidance. He shouldn't be posters that seemed to hang in every Gym, and dojo Brandon went to. He shouldn't be tapes of demonstrations and memories of strangers who met him once. It shouldn't be that he could only see his father's face by looking at photos. But if photos were all he was left with, didn't Brandon deserve to have them all? Shouldn't he have every last scrap of what was left of his father to make up for the gaping maw that his absence caused? And shouldn't Bruce O'Brian Give him the photo he knew existed but never had a copy of?

Brandon didn't know why he broke into Bruce's house. It felt like the right thing to do then, like the only thing to do. In hindsight, It wasn't even that special a photo, just one of his mom, his dad and Brandon's younger, happier self. It also featured Bruce O'Brian, like he belonged, was part of the family, and was Brandon's cool older brother. He probably could have asked and got a copy of the photo. But that would involve talking to Bruce, something Brandon hadn't been willing to do. Besides, Bruce might say no, and Brandon couldn't have that, couldn't, wouldn't accept that. Taking back what would have been his father and should have been Brandon's felt right. He had felt It would somehow do something if he could sneak into Bruce O'Brian's Fortress and sneak out with the photo. Be the missing link, which would make his collection of pictures and memorabilia somehow… Work. Create magic, change something, anything. It would magically fill that void, and it would be like Dad had never left.

Instead, he had been caught after sneaking in through Debbie Reynolds Home, being surprised by Bruce himself, who had demonstrated why people considered him Brandon's father's Heir and not Brandon by effortlessly catching and pinning him. Brandon hated that despite the terror at facing Bruce, he was awed at Bruce's skill. A blind man Could see that Buce O'Brian casually demonstrated the kind of mastery of his father's martial arts philosophy that legends were made of, that had people calling him the Greatest of His father's Students. He had tried to punch and then do a kick that Dad had shown him once, that Brandon had almost mastered, and Bruce had pinned him anyway. Then, after being defeated, instead of calling the cops, Bruce sat Brandon at the kitchen table, put ice on his arms, a cup of water in front of him and gave him the photo before telling him that punishment would be looking after Bruce's daughter Mary.

Brandon hated the Mercy he was given. Like he wasn't worth the effort or that he was too valuable a member of the family to really hurt. Being made to babysit? That wasn't a real punishment, certainly not for the son of Bruce Lee. That was the kind of punishment an older brother gave a younger, or a senior disciple of a master Gave their Junior. It's tedious and annoying but still demonstrates implicit trust. Brandon hated how good it felt and the implication that Brandon was unreasonable, not Bruce.

He hated how Bruce saw through him and offered all he wanted. Offering tutoring in his father's style from his most successful student, acting lessons from the best and maybe a way to not always hate the world or be so impulsive in his Justified revenge.

Brandon hated that Bruce would probably set him up better than his dad could have. Brandon would never have made it big in Hong Kong, "too foreign looking". He had overheard despite who his father was. Branodon wasn't Chinese enough for Hong Kong. Then, when Mom moved everyone to America, he found he wasn't American enough for Los Angeles. The others at school took one look at his oriental appearance and claims that Bruce Lee was his father excluded him and promptly called him a liar. Eric and Mike helped. Well, Eric more than Mike, but he only knew them because Their dad had been friends with his father.

Their dad was an actor like Bruce and a friend and student of Brandon's father, but he was nowhere near as famous. Chuck didn't have semi-legendary "facts" floating around the school like Bruce did. Besides, Chuck would be too busy focusing on his own kids to be able to help Brandon.

So Brandon was left with the choice of accepting Bruce O'Brian's help or staring at photos of his father and alternatively hating him for leaving and missing him. Brandon wanted to be stubborn. To scream to the world that he wouldn't give in. that his father's memory would be enough. He would take the world by the throat with what little he still had of his fathers and make them acknowledge him too, beat the smirk off the faces of anyone who insulted him, who disbelieved that he was the son of Bruce Lee, Who dared to teat his sister as anything less than a princess. He would follow in his father's footsteps and master his father's fighting style. Then, he would use it to carve his name into the world. Then, no one could look down on him or refuse to acknowledge him (Not even that idiot in the mirror).

Except beyond punches and kicks, his father taught philosophy. His father preached the style of no style. To use the right kick or punch for the situation. To be as water. Brandon had just focused on the punches and kicks, and while he won some fights, his foes still smirked at him, still called him a liar, and still picked on his sister. Not what Brandon would have wanted his father to see or know about.

When he was made to stop and think, really think, Brandon could imagine an alternative life where his father still lived and found that he would probably be here in this Mansion in LA anyway. His father would have ensured he knew the basics, sat him down, gave him the philosophy lessons, patted him on the shoulder, and then sent him to another master to learn. Being Bruce Lee's son, he would have been sent to his Greatest disciple to learn more.

Brandon hated that he would probably have been sent to Bruce O'Brian in an alternate world anyway. Brandon would have probably ended up in the same bedroom of Bruce's mansion. He would probably still have the stupid cat curl up on him and purr at him when he felt sad. Still, have the stupid dog lean against him and comfort him. Still have Bruce's Wife Carrie, pick up a series of books on teaching teens and child psychology. Still have overheard a conversation between Carrie and her mother about Carrie quitting her incredibly successful career as a singer, actor and writer because Brandon and Mary needed her more. Still have little Mary decided he was the coolest thing ever and would be a good "Square" at improv over dinner for acting practice. Still have Mary notice he didn't like the tiara that Bruce had forced on him and make it go mising, forcing him to have the much cooler sword. Still have people who cared about him here even when he didn't care about himself.

Brandon furiously blinked away the tears forming in his eyes. Forcing himself to Focus on the collection of photos from years ago showing the smiles of a dead Man who would never pat Brandon on his shoulder again and tell him what he needed to know.

He wanted his father back, but all he had were these imperfect illusions…

Brandon hated being thirteen years old , hated having been caught breaking into Bruce O'Brians house, and hated that Bruce was far more reasonable than anyone should be. Hated that the punishment was to babysit Mary, Bruce's daughter, like Bruce had babysat him when he was little. Like all of the was always what was supposed to happen.

He hated how much he loved going through forms with Bruce, how Bruce could pull details out of movie fight scenes or boxing matches and just do them, and how, with Bruce's help, Brandon could sometimes do it, too. Hated the discussion over dinner and how the diners' daily and weekly activities were turned into the improv skit "The Adventures of Squire Brandon". He hated how it helped his acting skills and made him see his life from an outside perspective. Brandon hated Squire Brandon because Squire Brandon was living an incredible life and was a whiny, ungrateful idiot who couldn't see it. Brandon hated how much Brandon was in squire Brandon.

Brandon hated that Bruce was doing precisely what Brandon expected his father would have done. Brandon hated that Bruce O'Brian was Exactly who Brandon needed him to be. Brandon hated how reasonable, Logical and fair in his dealings Bruce was with Brandon and the rest of his family. Brandon hated that the stupid, impulsive gut feeling was right, that breaking in and stealing the photo had been magic. That it had made everything better. That while it hadn't resurrected his father, it had shoved in his face that he still had the closest thing to an elder brother without sharing blood. Brandon hated that he felt hope that, for the first time in a long time, it felt like things might be getting better.

Brandon was thirteen and hated the world. The world smiled back, secure that Brandon would not be thirteen forever.

Trying to get into Brandon's head.

Ever dealt with a teenager? Remember being a teenager? And Brandon is sadly at that age to be hit by all these hormones at once. Chin up, kid. It will still hurt that your father is not there when you are ninety, but at least you won't be thirteen.

Sailor Moon Ranma 1/2 fanfiction crossovers where my introduction to the whole magical Girl Genre. There where some Really interesting ideas brought up in those and in the pure Sailor moon ones I read after the crossovers where fininshed. There was also a LOT of garbage.

I find myself inexplicably cheerful that Sailor moon is still on track to happen.

[X]Brandon Begins to Understand (Brandon begins to understand that Bruce is not being a father, because he knows that things will be better).

This one please. Yes we could make Brandon an even beter actor but this one seems to be the first step on healing and I think that is probably most valuable overall.

...Speaking of the magical girl genre. Any chance we could try and break down the stigma attached to any 'girl shows'?

After all a show is a show, it shouldn't ever be considered inherantly inferior simply because of a target demographic, especially to the point that it breaking out is dismissed on stuff like 'Oh boys like it cause sex sells'.

These are very good suggestions and have been implemented.

Now, for Miraculouys I had planned to have brad Bird as the Director for the Anime, something for him to sink his teeth into, but then the movie with John Henry happened and put him in as a Director there. If not Brad Bird, then who should we put as Series Director? Or perhaps should we change the movie Director to someone else?

As sunrise is an anime company in Japan, Brad going there might carry a debuff, as he dose not know the language.

Also Sunrise might not like an American coming over and being the series main guy, even if Bruce or George or Mike tell them that might be a good idea.

You'd need to convince them.

Ah shite. I just wanted this to be a true collaboration between studios, I mean I'm letting them have the writer and all.

But fine, I don't want the debuff, and Brad is a bit green at the moment for an Anime series (despite his love for all new ideas). That still does not leave us with a good enough director as nearly all rhe japanese ones we have focus mostly on mecha and space anime!

...We need to difersify a bit there.

Still, when the ime comes for the show to be in the U.S. (since I'm assuming we will be doing) can we use this to promote it on TV?:

Just because Sunrise is greatful and working with us, does not mean they want to be subordinate to our directors, nor do they want to meet as many of our deadlines or ideas.

They will still try, but they do want to try and do more of their stuff as well.

half the staff of dreamworks are Japanese. He'll be learning soon enough.

And we'll have plenty of time to swap around and have some good times with Sunrise doing more fun things.

But really if you want Brad to take over, you will need to convince sunrise.

Omakes help too.

Well fortunately you're in luck because Sunrise literally just finished airing a Magical Girl show called Magical Girl Tickle which helped to revitalize the genre after being in a funky hiatus for many years and also was notable as being the first magical girl series to star two magical leads:

So if you want to go for a director go for the show, go with Tickle's Director Takashi Hisaoka. Unfortunately I can't find any info on him, so for all intents and purposes he's an OC, but at least we got some grounded explanation for why Sunrise is doing Magical Girl.

[X] Plan Low Key

Overmind you need to list the Directors for the live action movies because it's not clear. Also Rocky II should be added to the list of movies currently in production under the informational tab for Lucasfilms.
