Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

What truly raised its popularity however was the voice actress of Minmei, Mari Iijima, a singer who has made a name for herself and actually sang all the songs that were made for the series. All her fans and the audience were tuning in to hear her sing, and the album she released in the aftermath managed to get to the top charts thanks to all the new fans that heard her and loved her voice. Shōji certainly liked it, enough to make the decision to have her songs be used in the American version of the show rather than dub them or look for another singer. As such, hits like "My Boyfriend's a Pilot", "Cinderella" and "Little White Dragon" became among the first Japanese songs that America heard.

Something crazy I just realized as a side effect of the "Japanese Invasion" is that Macross is kinda pushing Japanese pop music into the mainstream and if American audiences truly reacted to the Japanese soundtrack favorably, then radio stations may want to import Japanese pop albums to play on the airwaves. Meaning there is a non-zero chance that Mussolini's granddaughter gets her hit played across the US, lol:

say guys since the Soviets did not invade Afghanistan what the government like there now and how stable to unstable they are now

From the research I did, it seems without a Soviet intervention that the ruling People's Democratic Party either never has any authority or presence outside of Kabul or easily gets destroyed by insurgents. They were super unpopular with the general Afghan population no matter their ideology or beliefs and had shit morale and high desertion rates.

From there Afghanistan is likely a collapsed state in the 1980s similar to Somalia but because it doesn't even occupy any critical trade nodes, is completely ignored and forgotten about by the world. I don't think Bin Laden or Al Qaeda would form because there's no great enemy to fight, everyone is Muslim and a lot of the sides to the Afghan Civil War were different branches of Fundamentalist Islam, so you can't inspire a Jihad with those types of conditions.

It's honestly super hard to tell who would be who because most of the groups in the Afghan Civil War were born in the Mujahadeen and the anti-Soviet resistance, including the Taliban. My best guess is that the various groups that made up the Peshawar Seven eventually arise as the main contenders. As for who wins that, completely unknown though likely whichever faction gets Pakistan's patronage or somehow catches the interest of the West.

I think China can be king maker in this strugle. Being cut-off from the West and with frosty relations with the USSR, China is internationaly isolated and needs friends to keep their economy alive. Already in your omake they were making overtures to Iran in a desperate attempt to gain economic links, cloudn't they also get involed with Afganisthan to either support the current communist goverment or to support a islamic rebel group?

I don't think China would get involved because the situation with Iran and Afghanistan is completely different. A victorious Iran aligned with Chinese interests is a massive game changer because Iran is the dominant power in the Persian Gulf and thus China can influence the global oil trade while they would get very favorable imports of Iran's oil with Iran being one of the world's largest producers. Iran under the Shah was an emerging and dynamic economy who everyone thought had the potential to be an economic powerhouse. Were it not for the Revolution and sanctions, Iran could easily be top 10 largest economies, so it's a good market for Chinese goods.

Meanwhile with Afghanistan, it's a very poor backwater where most of the nation outside of Kabul still lives like it's the 19th century. It does have a lot of mineral potential, the bulk of the surveying was done by Soviet geologists who won't be keen to share. While Afghanistan is an investment interest to China nowadays, that's mainly in relation to the Silk Road project while any viable returns are due to all the US investment which is nonexistent here.

To be fair, they did invest in Tajik Mujahadeen during the Soviet War, but that was a dig against the Soviets and there's much less reason to invest in a free for all. I guess once the Civil War consolidates to a few factions, China will support whoever can win and isn't going to want to stir trouble in Xinjiang.

Let's not count out whoever is forming the worlds equivalent of the Northern Alliance.

I'm imagining the make up of who's in it is…interesting to say the least.

Well, the Northern Alliance was founded as a bulwark to the Taliban's dominance in the mid 90s so you need someone with a similar threat to them to unite the northern tribes. Right now it can be said the most direct predecessor to the Northern Alliance is the Jamiat-e Islami who are a primarily Tajik organization which many of the Alliance's founders were a part of and advocated for a form of Islamic Democracy. Not perfect, but mostly benign and probably the second best faction existing at the moment in terms of morality besides the secular monarchists.

Yeah, IRL I don't think they have not been at war for hundreds of years

Actually, Afghanistan for most of the 20th century was a very peaceful and quiet place and once the British stopped invading it, they used their position as a buffer between British India and Russia/Soviet Union for foreign aid and just chilled in most of the Cold War. Afghanistan legit had potential to be one of the greatest success stories of the Islamic world, but then in 1973 the reformist King's asshole cousin Daud Khan launched a coup and made himself dictator. It wasn't even for any ideological reasons, he just hated his cousin and wanted power, taking advantage of the Parliament not having a good time. Khan was then overthrown and executed by the Communists in 1978, a year later the Soviets invaded, and thus went more than 40 years of warfare.

So yeah, Afghanistan joins Brazil in the club of nations with decent monarchies overthrown in coups by dictatorships that ruined everything.

I wonder if there was Potential for Afghanistan to reform and become a proper Nation with a good economy, Civil Rights and stability.

Sure Afghanistan on its own is not good but the country has potential for either a great or bad geopolitical position for China. Because the nation is in the middle of China, Iran and Pakistan. China has already good relations with Pakistan since the '60 and with new links to Iran it is crucial that Afghanistan is a neutral nation and even better if it's part of this club China is trying to form. Also it's something to distract the homefront if needed. But I can also see it being ignored by China.

Oh, That Happened, Hope They Make a Movie About It
Oh, That Happened, Hope They Make a Movie About It:

Far beyond, in the background of Bruce O'Brian's entrance to Hong Kong, there was a shadow war going on between three forces. One was the American Central Intelligence Agency, who was tasked to protect the strangest and potentially, most lethal asset that has ever graced their agency. After all, it's not every day that the United States has a filmmaker who can literally claim he helped finance a film that started an anti-communist revolution.

Despite the circumstances surrounding it being rather… interesting to say the least.

The fact that most people at the Hong Kong Office were fans was… well noted, considering that many posters adorned their walls.

Operation Guardian was something that the CIA planned for if Bruce ever went back to China, especially since the CCP wanted to assassinate him, something that everyone here was quite surprised about, especially considering Bruce's more… well some would say apolitical, some would even say that his chaotic nature that no one understands. Business to say, was good.

They had the things and tools they needed, and they had a lot of things prepared for any eventuality, especially from the Red Dragon Triad, the unofficial, official branch of the Communist Party's intelligence apparatus within Hong Kong. The Same Triad that had tried to assassinate Bruce a few years prior, who had received, according to sources, an undisclosed shipment from the Mainland. Probably weapons, and tools to plan an assassination.

The only problem was, why was Bruce Here? Was he an official asset that no one told anyone about? Was he here on business?

Was he here on fucking vacation!?

They didn't know a damn thing.

So that meant that the Office would have to play hardball against the triads and work with their counterparts and Hong Kong Police to handle this while Bruce was here.

It was going to be a shitshow.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Second one was of the British MI6. They were doing this mostly because they were afraid that their boss in London was about to lose everything to a madman who had decided to make life difficult for everyone involved.

The Orders from the Home office were clear. Very clear. Protect Bruce, and stop anything that could start a war. Which was to say, Bruce dying. It was very clear to many people that Bruce coming to Hong Kong was something that everyone was afraid of.

There was also the clear fact that no at the Hong Kong Office knew anything from the CIA. or if he was even an asset that would be working with them.

But what was clear… was that they had to haul ass. Or they would all lose more than their favorite actor.

They might all lose their heads.
--------------------------------

The Third and final… member of this dance, was the Red Dragon Triad. They were tasked with many things. Drugs, weapons smuggling. Human trafficking. Really the standard criminal affairs.

What they also were, were men and women who sold their talents to state governments, particularly the CCP, for their… discretion.

And the contract was clear.

25 million in gold, to be paid on the completion of the murder, and confirmation of the kill… for Bruce O'Brian.

It was an odd request, especially after the last time they tried, but they had made the price well worth the asking price.

If he died and the Red Dragons were discovered to do it. They would all be killed. So they upped their price accordingly. Especially since Bruce O'Brian was a hard man to kill.

There were stories about what the man actually did that night that no one knew about. And the rumors everyone agreed on, was handing him over to the CIA where he was tortured…

As an educational tool.

But they had more than enough time now. This was Hong Kong, this was their turf. And they would not fail.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Bruce POV)

You looked at the newspaper as the breakfast was served. "I still can't believe you call this crap food." You said as the English breakfast was offered. "What do you think?"

John smiled. "It's an acquired taste. Maybe some of that noodle pie."

"Yeah, it is, but I like more of a dumpling when I'm here." You said. "Are they any good?"

"They are great, but that is more of a lunch than a breakfast," John replied. "But-"

"Yeah, I'm having it." You waved to the waiter. "Uh, do you serve dumplings. I will pay extra for dumplings."
------------------------------------------

The Triad member paled, as everything had all fallen apart. He couldn't poison the dumplings now he would see it was tampered with…

The breakfast poisoning for the meal was falling apart, he had to retreat and try again.
-----------------------------------------

Agent… Goose, why the hell they called him that, he did not know. Quietly grabbed the triad member he had been watching for hours, who had tried to slip a syringe into a plate of dumplings that Bruce had ordered.

"Sorry mate, but looks like we're going to be taking a ride." He whispered as he placed the pistol into his side, so keep walking."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Bruce POV)

Ah, it had been too long since you had done a nice, gritty, action scene. Batman was fun, but he was a superhero, and you knew half the guys working on the film doing the stunts with you. They were great, and you knew they were great.

Here. You had a gun firing blanks and you had to fly down the stairs. And it was going to be awesome!

Everyone knew you, but no one had ever worked with you, and that was exciting. Because you could try some new moves and no one would believe you, and it was going to be fun.

"Alright John, I'm going to slide down the stairs, head forward, and it will be a roll, to my feet, and I blast." You said. You liked the scene, you really did. But you wanted it to be cool and John Agreed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Triad member watched through the scope and breathed in slowly.

He had the script ready, because once the action was called, he go down the railing of the stairs, and Bruce O'Brian would die, an accident on set.

They would see the bullet in the autopsy yes, but he would be long gone.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Colins… he fucking hated that code name, why was he given the code name Michael fucking Colins.

It was funny at first, but really it was embarrassing now. A Proud Englishman using the name of an Irish hero.

Hong Kong PD was prepared for the raid, and the Sniper was not going to be long for his spot.

Now if only they could have delayed filming, but Damn Woo and his producers and O'Brian wanted things done today, so he could go home.

Fuck this day. You had to climb this fucking scaffolding.
-----------------------------------------------------

(Bruce POV)

"ACTION!"

You moved quickly, sprinting across the upper staircase as the blanks fired at the wall, and you did what you said, face forward on the staircase, not on the railing, moving on your belly down the stairs.

You thought you felt something over your head, as one of the pieces of wood splintered, but nothing felt odd.

As you rolled over you pulled the trigger and the blanks fired.

Then there was a loud. "CUT!"

You let out a breath. "Finally, I didn't think that would work."
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Collins fired three bullets and the sniper fell down. And he looked at the filming location. He saw Bruce talking to the director…

Huh… fucking Americans. Hopefully, he can get a citation for this crap.

The assassin then groaned in pain, as he walked over. "Well mate, you and I are going to have a long conversation after I save your life."
-------------------------------------------------
(Bruce POV)

You smiled at the actors and directors all gathered at the meeting hall, and you smiled. "I'm sure all of you have many things to say, and wonder why I am supporting you. It's because I see the creativity that you have, and I know what would happen if something were to happen. You may even welcome it."

"But I am going to pull from my own experiences. When me and George succeeded with American Graffiti, we almost decided to stay behind at Universal. We had wanted to try something new, with George wanting to make Star Wars. But we saw what kind of relationship this was going to be. It would begin well, but if we screwed up, even once… we would be finished. We decided to take the risk and try to be on our own. It was scary, we thought we would fail.

But it was far better that we tried, knowing the success might be worth it… Than fail in a relationship that would not be favorable. The risk was worth it, even if it was an almost impossible dream."

--------------------------------
(Bruce POV)

Triad busted, over 500 arrested in a criminal sting.

"Can't believe that I managed to see something like that happen on my trip to China." You mused.

It wasn't until after you got home, and saw the news about Chinese agents trying to kill other government officers in Hong Kong… that you realized something.

Were they trying to kill me?

Nah, they were probably doing something else... you weren't that important.
--------------------------------------

Reward: Bruce has successfully galvanized the Hong Kong Independence movement to break away from China, and choose its own path.

He didn't know that the CIA and MI6 were working together to try and save his life and was nearly killed on at least two separate occasions.

They got information that the Red Dragons were trying to kill you, and it led to a huge conspiracy where they were trying to kill many British and Hong Kong officials and get pro-unification candidates elected by intimidation, bribes, and other…

Usavory methods.

Things happening in the future will be affected by that.

That moment when you're so good at killing the CCP that that kill themselves for you. :p

Give these guys a medal and a well-deserved break.

Oh... Oh, shoot, this is a scandal of ginormous proportions. You all thought China couldn't become more reviled? We ain't seen nothing yet!

Seriously, it's one thing to be a Communist regime, it's another thing to actively interfere with democratic processes to install your own puppet regime! Like, that's the CIA's thing!

If information on this operation is ever released to the public in the future and made into a movie, do you think it would be a slapstick comedy?

Damn, well that's another chapter in the bizarre memoirs of Bruce O'Brian. Do like that speech in the end, really helped to justify his decision to head to Hong Kong where he did it in artistic solidarity instead of just doing it for the lulz, but yeah one can only imagine how the CIA and MI6 looked when they learned of the true intentions.

Damn, that is an epic adventure and Langley and London really gave it their all protecting us. I guess it's good we did so now to know what would happen if we ever directed Kung Fu Kid 2. Even if they failed, I kind of don't want to risk it unless we have absolute assurance that China has given up. At the very least, have someone film the Hong Kong scenes and we film in Taiwan or the Phillippennes for the mainland stuff.

Really good that we managed to uncover the conspiracy that was hinted at in the third reward and now all of Hong Kong has been galvanized for independence. OTL, China could always invade the colony and have a victory because most of the population was on board with it. Here, they would be annexing five million hostile citizens that have access to lots of copies of those revolution inspiring films. Hopefully Reagan and Thatcher manage to thread the needle and get Hong Kong independence pushed through without China escalating.

All that being said, I wonder how Macau is doing. Unlike Hong Kong, the unequeal treaties allowed Portugal to keep Macau indefinitely, but Macau has a hell of a lot less economic value and Portugal's political system is strongly anti-colonial across the board. Plus, after the Carnation Revolution, Portugal basically acknowledged that Macau was lost and called it "Chinese sovereignty under Portuguese administration". Events in Hong Kong may have many people panicking, but I don't think Portugal barring a strong conservative revolution will change its course and Macau as a whole has always been content as being part of China.

I'm guessing that if Hong Kong is independent, that China in order to save face will go through with a full annexation of Macau and no two systems. Probably a lot of refugees.

Overall really good update and looking forward to how the situation unfolds in the future.

Just another day in the life of Bruce O'Brien.

The CIA is gonna be studying all the assassination attempts on Bruce to see how they can learn from it to deal with Castro's plot armor.

If information on this operation is ever released to the public in the future and made into a movie, do you think it would be a slapstick comedy?

Even better, John Gardner finds out and writes a James Bond novel that becomes one of the Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan bond movies.

Ok who want to make Macau not get annex by China to give them the Most humiliating HUMILIATION they ever have and they blame Bruce because we ruin everything they have ever done even if their fault

The only thing that could top this escalation is if the CCP decides to fuck it and invade Hong Kong.
I'll do you one better.

A cabal forms of some of the slightly younger, more pragmatic, idealistic, and just power-hungry members of the CCP who see the writing on the wall and decide that the only way they can save communism is to rise up against the current party leadership.
