Progress At Last
It was a really upsetting vision, you say, trudging through the forest. I just needed to blow off some steam.
You blew up a mountain!
Hey, my people have a long and proud tradition of destroying random bits of scenery! you say, hopping over a log.
That doesn't mean it doesn't freak me out when it happens! says Maya.
You've been noticing lately that your friend's stutter hasn't been showing up over telepathy. Makes it a little easier to talk, honestly. And I'm sorry for that, you say. I was just-
A thunderous roar echoes out of the undergrowth, and you see a mass of fur and claws streaking towards you.
"Oh, knock it off!" you shout, a kiai rippling out from your lips on the last word and sending the creature tumbling backwards. It scurries into the undergrowth, yelping.
Kakara?!
Bear, you grumble.
Oh. After a moment, you hear a giggle over the link. Did it chew on you?
Pff. You roll your eyes. Knocked it over at fifty yards.
They can't really do much to you, as strong as you are, can they? she asks.
No, you reply, finally pushing through into a clearing. Honestly, if I focus I could count them from here by their heartbeats.
She goes silent for a minute. ...I'm still getting used to how strong you are.
I don't blame you, you say. Honestly, it was weird for me too, at first. It's...it's hard, sometimes.
Hard? You're the strongest person in the world! What could be hard for you?
That is what's hard. You look down at your hands. If I don't pay attention, I can spend an hour doing something, look up, and find that it's been less than a second. Even when I'm at rest, without powering up at all, I'm millions of units more powerful than a warrior of my people who's spent their whole life getting stronger. And then there are the humans...
...what about us? asks Maya, her voice uneasy.
The untrained ones, you say. If I twitch wrong, I could kill a city. So much of our training is about learning to keep all of that energy in. You swallow. You know what the first lesson is, when they start letting us out of our Masques? They set us down in a group of mannequins painted to look like people and tell us to reach the other side without flying.
...oh.
You nod to yourself. Yeah. I'm careful. I'm really careful. And it's all because I know how...how breakable everybody is.
I...it sounds like it's horrible, she says.
It isn't all bad, you say, turning your hands over and letting ki flow over them. Ki is beautiful. It's life. Sure, there's actual life energy, but nothing dead has ki. And I can feel that. I can feel everybody. You close your eyes, luxuriating in the feeling of a gorgeous constellation, always in the back of your mind, and smile.
ping
Oh! Maya yelps. That's...you?
Yeah, you hum, hugging yourself around your waist. I don't even need to ping to feel everybody. It just makes it clearer. You sigh, grinning. Anyway. I have to do some training now. And you don't have a Masque, so you need to sleep.
That is so not fair, she grouses.
Not up to me, you say. Even the humans who we marry into our people don't get Masques. I kinda get the idea that they can't.
Oh? squeaks Maya, her voice strangled. Really?
Yeah, you say, nodding. Anyway, goodnight, Maya.
Mhm. Night. She vanishes from your head.
You take a deep breath, setting yourself into a stance.
Double-
Triple-
And catch.
"Right," you say to Two and Three. "Time to get to work?"
* * *
Multiform is a strain all of its own.
Ki has endurance. Your body has endurance. Your mind has endurance. Your life energy has endurance. Your Sight has endurance. And multiform has endurance. So many different kinds of energy to exhaust.
Multiform is a weird one.
The mysteries of ki are many and varied, and even with your capabilities, you've only begun to scratch the surface. However, a common point of amusement among practitioners is that the more you learn, the more and more fascinating ways you find to get tired.
It's like you're uncovering new muscle groups.
And trying to quadruple yourself, you find, is like trying to lift a one-ton load with a half-ton-lifting body.
"Hnnnnnnnnnnnrrrrrrrrgh!"
Sweat pours down your face and the faces of your clones as you double over, trying to get a fourth clone out of this. You strain with all of your might. And yet, about all you're accomplishing is getting sore.
Well, that's not quite right. You're getting a better feel for the nature of the strain. It's...really a lot like training a muscle. You're trying to lift too much. The solution? Lift. Practice. Use multiform, even more than you already are.
Tall order, but you think there's some time you could still eke out.
Are you trying to defecate?
"-rrrrrrEEP!"
You jump over thirty feet in the air, spinning as you come down.
Dazarel sits on a tree branch behind you, one beady eye fixed on you as he licks one of his claws.
"N- no!" you shout, turning red. "I'm training!"
Indeed? And here I thought that was characterized by results.
Your clench your hands into fists, snarling. "Shut up, lizard!"
He crosses his legs in front of him, unmoved. Very well. But I did have a message to convey...
You close your eyes and take several very deep breaths. "...that being?"
That little display of yours has attracted a great deal of attention. Mages all over the planet have been doing things to the site. Presumably, investigations. Including that woman you so despise. The one who smells like insanity and ambition.
You blink. "...Lady Dandeer?"
Hm, possibly. Short, even for a monkey? Yellow hair? Eyes like mud mixed with urine? Walks at turns like a kaioshin and a whipped animal?
Your nose wrinkles in disgust at the descriptions. "Let's say yes."
She has been poring over the crater as if it contains the secret to making people love her without magical prompting. You may or may not wish to investigate.
Your eyes narrow at the news, and then narrow against at Dazarel. "Why are you telling me this? What's making you help me?"
The odds of my surviving an hour in this state, should you be unseated from your position of prominence, he says. I am aware of why I yet breathe. Pragmatism demands that I at least hold no secrets from you, Princess. He stands on the branch. Do with the information what you will. I will be out searching for hiding places, should somebody manage to overcome you. With that, he flaps his wings and heads off into the distance.
You have determined how to further develop multiform, although you've yet to uncover any insights on the Perfect form.
It's dawn, and today is a school day. You have a couple of hours before you have to be there. What do you do with your time?
[ ] Head directly to school, passing neither go nor a chance to collect two hundred units of currency. More Misfit-flavored slice of life stuff, now with increasing shades of DB-style shounen.
[ ] Confront Dandeer. Demand to know what she's doing. Grandma only said you shouldn't attack the bitch. Right?
[ ] Write in with other ideas, either for main-line options like this
-[ ] or with specific sub-votes for the above default options if you have a particular objective.
APPROVAL VOTING. MANUAL MORATORIUM; WILL UNLOCK WHEN I WAKE UP TOMORROW.
Training votes are entertaining, and so are snarky chibi dragons. I enjoyed this update. Maya's always fun, as well.
We're going to start accelerating the pace again soon, folks; we've had a nice enough rest, I think. Also, I'm not even going to bother announcing new goals until we've fleshed out the list again and everything has stabilized. Not unless they're narratively new, anyway.
Going anywhere near Dandeer would probably be a bad idea, if she realizes we're there. We could try to see what's going on from a distance instead, yes?
