Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

I'm more of a plot > perk explanation/integration type of guy so when when a chapter like this comes out I'll just scroll and stop every few thousand words and check if he is still talking about his new perks or tech... We'll get to the plot eventually lol just a waiting game.

I'm not sure whether you missed the main plot points in the chapter or you just don't consider them important. In case of the former, here's the plot tl;dr:
  • Joe finally laid perfectionism to rest as his guiding design principle.
  • Joe substantially solved the Simurgh problem in a way that lets him and Aisha act freely outside the workshop without the possibility of precognitive intervention.
  • As those two conflicts were the main driving forces behind the the workshop-seclusion arc, we can consider that arc tied off.
  • Fleet, Survey and Matrix got real bodies.

I did miss those plot points of the chapter due to my skipping around so your quote is actually extremely helpful. Thanks! I tend to skip around a lot in long chapters like this due to my attention span being measured in pico-seconds so I usually miss stuff like this spread out throughout the longer chapters lol.

I wonder how many of these complaints about there not being anything in a chapter is due to people not actually reading the whole chapter.

General skimming advice if you want to try to miss less plot points: Read the start of each paragraph, see if it's something that interests you, if it isn't move on. If it is though, but doesn't make sense, just read the rest of the paragraph before. Usually a good way to make your way through long stories if you want to continue engaging/feeling satisfied with progress.

I remember during the ABB fight arc (Knock Down, Drag Out, etc) there were a lot of complaints explained within the story, just not read with all the skimming going on. I'll say decently likely.

Random kinda cursed idea: Biotinkering to give Tybalt a second voice-box to let him talk English.

While I personally have enjoyed the current "arc" I feel like it should definitely be noted that their's probably going to be an uptick in pace, both because the "Apeiron wants to go all out, but can't because Simmie-kuns's wild ride" dynamic is atleast partially resolved. The endbringers aren't fully resolved, and the various sources of "heat" for Apeiron aren't resolved, but he can atleast go outside of his hidey hole without feeling like he's going to get instantly ganked by the overgrown bird. I'm not saying that every obstacle to Joe touching grass is over, but major progress has been made. The fact that the AI now have meat space bodies and presumably identities of some sort will likely lead to them interacting with people outside the workshop, leading to more character interaction. at the very least, the villains in Somers rock are going to get thrown for a loop by the Stig, his mecha weeb powergamer younger sibling, and his dummy thicc "some kind of insanely generalized thinker" sister.

What??!? That's totally ridiculous and completely unfounded and totally not absolutely valid.

Having a humanoid cat for a cousin and teammate is only going to make the people who think that Joe's a case-53 even more convinced. Cauldron will certainly be confused because they'll know that he isn't.

Also, with Matrix walking about, people will now have a plausible explanation that they can latch on for where the gundam that he clearly didn't build came from

People are going to jump ALL over the group trigger theory. There's Master stuff from Aperion's name, there's an obvious Brute, and Tinker/Thinker have already been "confirmed". If Lisa can clock that the gang isn't all human it's going to be one helluva reveal.

Edit: My last sentence is stupid. Either she's met/deduced the AI's (and I've forgotten) or she will immediately conclude they're not human because Joe is well, Joe. The Rock will be a party.

I think you mean tattletale not Taylor. Because I don't see how she would notice.

I doubt taylor would be the one to reveal that, hell, somehow I don't think even tattletale would reveal it, except as a result of torture by coil. It's the kind of reveal that you don't want to make about your ally, even if he does show up with an entire team of parahumans without warning them. Out of all the unexpected bullshit Apeiron the enigmatic artificer could pull, confirming the cluster trigger theory by just showing up is the kind of bullshit that is entirely par for the course of the enigmatic artificer. If ANY of this gets leaked to PHO, their's going to be a hellstorm of shipping, theorizing and genuine nightmares coming from the PRT, especially if people find out "Cousin Tybalt" is more proficient than Apeiron when it comes to combat.

Of course, some of that theorizing will be about where the fuck the rest of the proverbial squad was for the ABB smackdown, which will inflame speculation on group dynamics and history even further.

I hope people don't think Garmet is the only member of the cluster who isn't part of the club, or god forbid, the one with a kill dynamic with another member. I don't think Garmet's fans would be able to take the stress of thinking that Apeiron and his gang are gunning for her.

Stories like Hybrid Hive, Taylor Varga, and Mauling Snarks are less about the original story of Worm and more giving the characters a freedom to be happy and do better and more bright things then anything the original did.
I follow (or followed, in the case of the complete ones) all those stories for much the same reason I read this one. I don't mind the long descriptions as long as they engage and entertain me, which Lord manages quite handily.

Why do that when he could just wear something around his neck to translate for him and muffle his yowls at the same time as well as let him use All The Cat Puns? Nya.
This reminds me of a youtube clip I saw several years ago. Tybalt is much nicer though.

Don't forget that people thought the name of Apeiron was weird and made all sorts of jokes on in. All recorded on the internet in posts, commentary videos, and memes. Ape-Iron and A-Pie-Run. What are people gonna think when they encounter these posts and videos? How will they react to seeing these jokes, realizing it's not as funny as before, or just not getting why the name Apeiron is being made fun of or treated as weird? Or why they themselves previously thought it was weird and joined in on the joke?

With it being fiat-backed. They won't return to finding the name weird. At most they'd just realized that it once was considered weird. Then they'd realize. Which leads to it being known it's another world wide Master (officially Stranger) effect. Which is something they CAN feel ill-thought about unlike the name itself. That might lead to a weird phenomenon and sensation where despite the association to a master effect, they still don't have ill-thoughts of the name itself.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHA! Oh my sides! That is just downright hilarious! Yes, the ability to turn into a Titan is certainly benign, right?
Knowing now that there is a power in the celestial forge that would allow Joe to transform into a titan, my new dream is to read a titanic apeiron which suplex an endbringer.

Contained within that space was the artificial life of a version of Aisha that existed only as a concept. Data that would be fed to scanning effects, overriding any attempt to discern her intentions or future. Always showing the same result, one of harmless non-interference.

It was the same policy I had held to divert attention from my actions. Do nothing until a trigger that cannot be predicted was supplied. For the purpose of all assessments, it read as nothing. No action, no ambition, and no great conflicts with the powers of the world. Some reaction if directly confronted, but only enough to avoid trouble.

Brian: *sighs pensively*
Lisa: "What's wrong, Brian?"
Brian: "I'm worried about Aisha. She hasn't been hanging out at the gym or with dad after his injury. I'm sure she's doing something I'm going to regret."
Lisa: "Don't be silly. Aisha's a perfectly normal person who stays out of trouble. I'm just glad she's not involved in this whole thing with Apeiron the Enigmatic Artificer like we all are."
Brian: *stares* "Lisa, you have met my sister before. How could you even think that?!"
Lisa: *waves hand vaguely* "Yes, of course I've met. That's how I can say she's completely harmless, never trying to get into trouble." *taps her head smugly*
Brian: *stares some more, speechless*

Aisha let out a whistle as she turned it in her hand. "I know I keep saying this, but God Damn. Tiffany's has nothing on you."

"Not really my target market." I quipped and Aisha smiled slightly. She slipped the bracelet onto her right wrist and held it up.

So, one thing comes to mind. Unless Joe decides to go hacking her records, Aisha's "space PhD-MD-BA-CPA-MBA-XYZ and however many more letters we can cram in there" is completely unknown to any authority. That means that she still needs to go to regular school. Does this bracelet do anything to protect itself? Because it's probably going to be a lot more visible than her hair clip. And you just know someone is going to point it out or try and snatch it. This is Brockton Bay.

It was a hard lesion I had learned from my encounters with Bakuda and Leet, and not one I'd forget.

I was going to make a crude comment about Bakuda here, but I have Cancer survivors in my immediate family, and can see where it would be inappropriate. Needless the say, this should be 'lesson'.

Metal. It had a metal affinity. I went to work, adding runes of elemental metal. They were inscribed along the surface in sharp, angular patterns. Runes of enhancement, creation, and control. Both literal and conceptual aspects of elemental metal expressed through impossibly advanced magic, and amplified in power thanks to the primal infusion of elemental energy.

Tybalt: *plinks claw against sword* "Rhooo fink rhoo ghhooodd? Rhooo noooo Emporoooaaar." *plinks again* "Here, rhee show rhoo how done." And then all of Kaiser's summoned weapons turned back and - somehow - LOOKED at him.

Some books are shorter than your average @LordRoustabout chapter and we love him for it.

The general guidelines I've found are:

Article:
Short stories range anywhere from 1,500 to 30,000 words; Novellas run from 30,000 to 50,000; Novels range from 55,000 to 300,000 words, but I wouldn't recommend aiming for the high end, as books the length of War & Peace aren't exactly the easiest to sell.

Insects of many sorts can definitely tell the difference between animals (which humans are) and machines. Mosquitos could at the very least, and I'm sure flies could as well.

Anyway, there has been lots of speculation about which perks would be the "worst" to get at Somer's Rock. My take would be more, which would be the most interesting. In a previous post, I fanboy over getting Matrix of Leadership while actually speaking at the meeting, since in its own media it comes with bodily changes and there is a WOG floating around that it will most likely come with audible fanfare as well.

Perks that would have an effect on the meeting come in a few different sets, as I see it. One type would be those that have a visible uncontrollable reaction by Apeiron the Enigmatic Artificer. Remember when he first got the head implant, he grabbed his head and screamed. That would have gone over real well in any setting other than in the Workshop which was where it happened. I don't know if there are any more painfully startling perks waiting around, but there might be some that come with nauseating memories... thinking mainly of Arch-magos here. Several of those would be dependent on Jozef to contain his reaction... we just saw how he reacted to Feel it Out, could he have remained stone-faced if in an important meeting?

Then there are those that cause an obvious and immediate physical change on Jozef. Chosen of Death will instantly make him still yet more beautiful and perfect. Titan's Blood will make him able to become much taller-- can he control it? I don't know if Demigod Atelier comes with bodily changes or not, but it's capstone, Cyborg Hindu Godbody, certainly will, Somer's Rock will certainly last long enough he could get both. And if LordR is merciful and generous, and decides to allow Eyes of the World after all, that would also have an immediate change, esp. if he happens to be looking right at someone at the time.

But I think some of the most interesting would be the ones that might change the goals and actions of Apeiron the Enigmatic Artificer right during the meeting. Strong Spark has often been mentioned as this, but there are others.. the eccentricity that comes with Inventor, the ruthlessness that might accompany Spectre or Erudition.

And, of course, suddenly being able to sing and talk at the same time would be super awesome and hard to control as well I would think.. not to mention remembering, at the same exact time, to de-select all the musical perks he will get with Pagan Science that default to on.

Well, this is the second time I've posted a similar post.. hopefully I won't be doing so tooo many more times before Somer's Rock actually happens. Remember, though, there is supposed to be a substantial Leet POV before the meeting, so it would not surprise me if the next chapter is purely an interlude. That will please those who hate the tech descriptions, while somewhat frustrating the rest of us.

Regardless, really looking forward to the next chapter, but then that is always the case with me anyway. Wishing LordR a peaceful, stress free, and healthy week, regardless on whether he finishes the next chapter in time for next week or not.

I was not joking about how unhealthy they were. It was incredible you could get milk fat and sugar concentrated to that level in something that still technically counted as liquid. If anyone but a demigod drank one it would probably shave a month off their life. Of course, considering the appetites of gods, all those drawbacks were flipped to positives. I remembered my own training, post-divinity, and the insane quantities of food I had gone through. At that point a shake that somehow had more calories than its equivalent volume in solid butter would have been a welcome post-workout snack.
Aisha: what are you doing?

MonkyIronBar: Deepfrying butter

Aisha: And why on gods green earth would you do that?

GorillaIngot: Need some calories in my diet, since you know...godhood, and eating normal would cost an arm and a leg in groceries

Aisha:... Gross, but okay... oh, are you going to recycle the used fat? is that why you're draining it?

BananaMuncherFE: Gotta wash the deepfried butter down with something
Aisha: i'm gonna be sick

Tybal: Meow

Aisha: those are just strawberry milkshakes... right?

Tybal: *slurps his grease-trap milkshake while looking away*

Aisha: you know, godhood has a lot more downsides that i once thought

SimianSteel: Demigod, you don't even want to know half the garbage the real deal has to eat

Idk, you can make puns about someone's name without thinking it's weird. Beardmaster as an example is just a nickname about a fairly standard and understandable name. It's the enigmatic artificer part that is weird, and now it's only the fact that people know him as such that is considered weird. If I intuitively knew someone by their title, the actual nature of their title would only really add to the weirdness that was already inherent to knowing.

I think tattletale won't be affected by Aisha's anti-precognitive defense... Hopefully

there is a WOG floating around that it will most likely come with audible fanfare as well.

You got the touch starts blaring

It has magic to protect it against theft and being seen as something worth snatching. Taylor's watch (and the rest of the Undersiders) has an effect where it looks mundane.
On Taylor's watch, Danny's noticing of it, and the magic keeping it inconspicuous:
The watch is magic, and it is an intent based magic. Danny is not a threat and could probably notice the watch, but he wouldn't be seeing it in its full masterwork mithril glory. There would appear to be a dimmer finish, less detail, and simpler construction from the angle that he saw it. There might be a question of "New watch?" with the assumption that she found something at the market, a midrange item or designer knock off. Nice and well suited for her, but not anything glorious. The same thing would happen at school. People who would notice the watch won't see it closely enough or in the right conditions for them to realize what it is.

Plus, it's probably soulbound. Like Chen's mechashift weapon and Joe's own watch/omnitool/Trauma.

Idk, you can make puns about someone's name without thinking it's weird. Beardmaster as an example is just a nickname about a fairly standard and understandable name. It's the enigmatic artificer part that is weird, and now it's only the fact that people know him as such that is considered weird. Yeah, you got a point there. Though I think the weirdness was part of the fun in making puns or jokes so that part might get noticed if the jokes don't land as strongly.

It seems like the bracelet is for just/mainly precog. Not thinkers in general especially not Lisa's kind. Plus, Lord had said that Joe's trusting Lisa with the whole boss/Coil thing and doesn't want to add to the difficulties of that by messing with her data/spoofing her. That was in reply to why he wasn't making a anti-Tattletale device.

"Will Joe use item construction A+++ to counter Tattletale's power?":
Item Construction could be use divert attention or edit perception of a person, object, or place, but that would be very obvious. Joe is at least ostensibly working with Tattletale to take down the Undersiders' boss. Throwing wrenches into her powers when she is (supposedly) trying to get things ready for him to clean house would be counterproductive. If they ended up as clear enemies he could make something in a flash, but he is trying to at least not openly impair her at the moment. She is already in a bad state and didn't recover as much as from her night of rest as she was trying to let on. Alec was right about the group being pressed to the limit and not able to handle more.
