Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

On one hand, I am completely alongside everyone complaining that somer's rock is still probably two chapters away if nothing comes up.

On the other, I am still crying after that creation scene.

I've always been an advocate for the pacing that you want, but this chapter has half a Harry Potter book worth of words and its only brought the story a few hours ahead. Perhaps have more strategically placed interludes that progress the plot but don't count for Joe? Like every time he gets a shit ton of motes like last chapter, switch the explanation to a new perspective so we don't get more motes. It might be gaming the system so I don't know if that would work or not.

Also, I'm imagining Tybalt in a Zoid Liger Zero type armor in the future for the nostalgia feels.

Thanks for the great chapter Roustabout. I personally, while excited for Somers rock, enjoyed this chapter greatly. While I understand that some readers only appreciate certain aspects of your work, to me it's always a delight to read anything you write.

"Maybe not a normal want, but something. The Arcane Craft can handle it." I smiled at her. "You'll be able to learn magic as well."

No, there is precisely one method Shard Sensing is working. It's just applied and processed differently for different "powers". So there is a common - and pretty mundane - denominator for ALL sens
I don't think that's actually true, both because I can't find a WoG for it, the fact that certain thinker powers, like Taylor's or flechete's thinker ratings are based on granting improved/unique senses and/or better processing of information.

I'm especially doubtful when considering that the fact that shards are specifically designed to use distinct techniques, as exemplified by manpower and gully both being brutes, but using radically different effects to do so.

I suppose it could be argued that all shards could share a singular method of sensing, much like flight is supposed to be a very common shard ability, but that wouldn't mesh with the supposed "throw everything at a wall and see what works, and then do it again and again in a massive evolutionary cauldron until we get new things" methodology of the entities. While it is known that numerous aspects of "difference" between shards are in actuality the result of distinctions in the restrictions on shards, it's highly unlikely that every distinction between thinkers is solely the result of restrictions imposed by a shard, certainly some are likely the result of "close relatives" finding different expressions of the same mechanism, but every single thinker shard, even if we're soley talking about just precognitive shards? It's a bit of a stretch.

I suppose Joe could attack the common denominator of the shards themselves, or their connection to this dimension, but that seems like less spoofing data and more "violently attacking". Their's ultimately a pretty big difference between "hiding from detection/creating false data" and causing the detection system/the operators of the system to have a seizure/explode.

That's not entirely true. Digistruction is capable of replicating Elemental effects and, what is more, Sirens and their Artifacts and Class Mods.
Those aren't mystical codes/enchantments or elemental infusion, so actually it is entirely true.

So to start off rolls analysis... apparently someone else is also doing this now so idk if I should continue. Please let me know if I'm adding anything with my commentary vs the sparser record that's already been provided:

Roll 1: Time Contellation (400): Time constellation is solidly 600CP
Roll 2: Knowledge Constellation (500): There was a solid mix of options here. A third of the clusters, 6 to be precise, in this constellation were possible including the Plecian Tome at the top end. The Tome is of limited use without the Arch-Magos perk but Joe could have managed something. We could also have gotten a shocking 5 of the remaining 6 Star Trek Skills, or unlocked Mantra Technology from Asura's Wrath.
Roll 3: Magic Constellation (600-600): We got Feel it Out. This is as described in the story a major introduction to psionic ability and apparently another boost to Joe's mental health. It synergized well with heretical adaptation and spiral energy with the ability for boundless improvement.
Roll 4: Clothing Constellation (100): The forge is a troll. I have no other explanation.
Roll 5: Alchemy Constellation (200): We had a 1/6 chance of getting mixing Mixtures which would allow Joe to have 8 duplicates simultaneously.
Roll 6: Size Constellation (300): Size constellation starts at 400 points now.
Roll 7: Resources and Durability (400): We had a 50% chance of getting either Scavenger which gives Joe yet more options for having equipment available at all times or Armsthrift which seems to have effects already present in Joe's abilities so I'm not sure how they'll stack.
Roll 8: Magitech Constellation (500): We had a 1/8 chance of getting the 400 point Technomancy perk from Mage the Awakening. This would likely have made it more possible to do remote metal transmutation and upgrade Joe's Arsenal Bird with exotic materials like Cybertonium.
Roll 9: Quality Constellation (600-400): Mechanical Master boosts a number of fields of crafting, adds yet another type of phlebotinum and of course unlocks the Digistruct ability. Overall very solid.
Roll 10: Time Constellation (300): We haven't added a 300 point perk in the middle of the chapter.
Roll 11: Alchemy Constellation (400): Missed another 1/6 chance for Mixing Mixtures
Roll 12: Capstone Constellation (500): We had the points for 7 of the 8 capstone clusters in the forge. The only way we could have missed is by rolling the 800 point Glory To... cluster from Percy Jackson.
Roll 13: Quality Constellation (600-600): Daedalus' Student This is one of the big ones enabling truly divine levels of crafting. This is right up there with Master Craftsman in flipping the table over as far as what's possible to accomplish and it hasn't even reached it's final form. It'll be further boosted by the Capstone booster Titan's Blood.
Roll 14: Resources and Durability (100): This constellation starts at 400 points.
Note: there were 3k words after the last roll so it's possible the total for next chapter will be adjusted upwards.

The reference doc has been updated. We have two new clusters unlocked in the Capstone Constellation.

Can we increase the word count cost for every power he gets? the story is great and i get both sides of the problem with the pacing. But there is no denying we have been stuck in a loop of getting power up -> explaining -> getting power up fo long while now. This is my first (and only so far) celestial forge fic so i dont know all the mechanics, but maybe if we doubled o tripled the cost for each mote then we will have enough time to get the best of both worlds.
Amusingly enough most other Celestial forge fics do rolls twice as often. Earning 100 points every 1000 words. That said they also go into less detail so there's less of a feedback effect.

I'm so lost at this point. How many days have passed in world?
It's still Saturday the day before Somer's Rock. This chapter and the previous one both happened after his Therapy session.

I'm so lost at this point. How many days have passed in world?
@Whamodyne's Rough Timeline is a bit behind(last update was before therapy, but the day hasn't finished yet), but is accurate enough. We are now heading into Sunday, April 24th. It's been only a week since Joe showed up at the storage yard, to be clear. ~2 weeks since Chapter 1, and 3 since Joe triggered.

I think the biggest issue is that people aren't used to stories like this.

Stories like Hybrid Hive, Taylor Varga, and Mauling Snarks are less about the original story of Worm and more giving the characters a freedom to be happy and do better and more bright things then anything the original did. They take Wildbow's original story and mock it for its darkness and give a different story entirely.

This one is set to a similar theme, even if the darkness is as deep.

Right now, if Roust wanted, he could have Joe rush for the end. There is little, if anything, left on the planet that could stop him save the Endbringers and Scion himself. With the tech at his disposal, he could conquer the world and uplift it. The Forge has already reached a point where Joe is going to stomp over the enemies he faces.

One other thing, I am okay with the pacing now that I think more about it.

Because, quite simply, the story is going to hit a fever pitch if it continues on the canon rails. The events of Worm are dark, horrific, and terrible. And Joe is going to have to deal with them. Leviathan. The 9. The Fallen. The Dragonslayers. Cauldron. All of the villains of the story are going to have to be dealt with.

So @LordRoustabout taking his time before he is thrown headlong into the overarcing plot that will give him no time for technology porn like this is a good thing.

And who knows, one day Roust may unseat mp3 for the longest Worm fic.

He has so much material left to go over. And as we're all eager for what is to come, I also am going to enjoy the events along the way.

Man it has been a wild ride. I have been here since the beginning. I honestly didn't expect this fic to grow as much as it did. But well.... here we are.

Thank you for this amazing fic Lord. Keep being awesome... and go with your own flow

hard agree. Joe is at genius-level intelligence due to intelligence-boosting perks, right? Part of intelligence is understanding nuance.

however

The PRT, like the police, do not prevent crime. They show up after crimes have already been committed. If Joe's goal is to prevent parahuman crimes, he Should be favoring areas other than Law-enforcement and distributing resources. Ultimately, crimes are usually a symptom of systemic problems, and Joe Should be focusing on solving those issues.
Of course, when parahuman crimes do happen, Joe should respond to that. Apeiron is strong enough to not necessarily Need to work with the PRT, but he could make some amount of difference by equipping some Protectorate members with emergency Apeiron-tech, to prevent incidents like the ABB attacks on the Rig.

Ultimately the greatest change that Joe could enact would involve some amount of Warlord-ing/Seceeding and creating better political systems to enact positive outcomes.

"El magnìfico usuario ejemplar de la Forja Celestial, Presidente Santìsimo de la Bahìa de Brockton, honorado con el alias de "El Artìfice Enigmàtico", Apeiron".

The fact that these posts are two posts away from each other is very very VERY funny to me. Especially now that Apeiron can make his ridiculous name seem normal now.

Man y'all are complaining about all the perk and tinker stuff when from the start it's been like 60% of the story's DNA... Lord even explicitly stated that the reason for this fic existing isn't to explore character interactions or how Worm works as a setting, but to explore Jumpchain perks in a way that Jumpchains didn't. From the very start tinkerbabble, perk exposition and a glacial pace has been the foundation everything else is built upon. The character interactions/development and the plot and what elevates the quality of this fic, for sure, but it isn't what the story is about.

That first post reminded me, I'm actually kind of hoping The Rock has Joe effectively claim the ABB's old territory, even if just to stop any new power blocks from expanding too ruthlessly (*coughcough*Empire*coughcough*), or just stopping the power-vaccum from causing too many problems.
Also, I love the idea of Matrix swimming through buildings and improving and fixing shitty wiring and plumbing. Also stupid household idea for Fate Alchemy: Alchemical vacuum cleaner; just drags all the filth and dust and old stains off the house, then teleports them away to some refinery or smth. Not likely to happen though :p
Also, Joe has a ZERO system. Not much the PRT could do if Joe used a ZERO system and some drones to stop violent crimes. Especially if he designs the drones for different purposes but still have them be humanoid, making it almost seem like a team of parahumans. Like think about the brute effect of Gundam Tech being minutiarized and made so much better and more efficient when added to the Square Cube Law...
Not to mention Fleet could be piloting all those drones without any trouble, though Joe might not want to throw that responsibility on him.
Just saying...

Yeah I with the guys that said that enjoy the power fantasy is the way to enhanced our (free) experience ^^. This is how we get super mecha sports, lava surfing and other beautiful things that would not part of a worm normal grindark plot.

And we get character development to absurd degrees. The point that the MC will be comfortable with some aspects of his work are still raising. I mean he just use little portions of his soul and other things that MC at beginning would never do because his background made him lack agency.

The greatest point in the villains meeting will be Apeiron saying no.

Maybe informing the villains they have X hours to leave town. Or create a new version of the unwritten rules that also favor the 'normal' people.

Because while he need to easy the people elsewhere. He also need to truly start have a (bigger) global presence.

Anyway. I hope his personal gear get a spark of soul too. With liferfibers and other good stuff^^.

And I still enjoy the curveballs that will be the fleet in the shards world. That is a plot armor destroyer if there was ever one ^^.

Character/development isn't what story is about. Yeah, and it's a shame really. Because Lord is probably the best of all Worm fanfiction writers when it's about character development. Damn he could make Wildbow run for his money. I mean did you read Glory girl and Manpower interludes? And Armsmaster? It's a masterpiece!
It's just a shame we can't have more of this.

I mean really, imagine if Joe didn't meet Aisha? He would be ranting all alone in his workshop about his perks for 200k of words. Yeah, there's Fleet, Matrix and the rest but they are extension of his power like his clones. They don't count when you need healthy social life.

So @LordRoustabout taking his time before he is thrown headlong into the overarcing plot that will give him no time for technology porn like this is a good thing.

Following the canon rails would mean there is about 3.7 million words to go before Leviathan arrives at the current pace. About 20 words to kill Leviathan given how many perks he'll have by then, followed by another 3.7 million words before Jack Slash arrives to get turned into a pile of ash. Etc etc.

The only reason this fic would ever have a problem finding time for tech porn is if he decides he's screwed around long enough and decides to wipe out every Worm threat in a couple days.

Please keep doing these. I saw the other analysis, and you two are fulfilling different niches. The other person focuses just on points, what constellation it was, and the name/cost of perks rolled. Its quick, but not as in depth.

You give not just the points available and the constellation, but also what the chances of rolling a perk was, how many it could have been, examples of what the perks remaining are, and so on. Plus commentary I find amusing. I honestly don't consider a chapter "read" anymore without your analysis, because it adds a lot of context to what's going on behind the scenes with the Forge itself.

What's the worst possible roll Joe can get at Somer's Rock? At this point it's clear he'll get at least one big perk that'll raise even more concern among the villains, so what's the worst-case scenario?

Strong Spark probably, Miniaturization & Efficiency might be the second, but suddenly turning slightly insane in the middle of a tense and importing meeting might not be the best thing to have happen.

I've come to the conclusion that if BCF is to fanfics what Bleach's rescue arc is to anime. Logically, you know the plot is progressing since the characters act like they are that bit closer to their goals every chapter/ episode, and yet no matter how much they upgrade tech/ run across the city, they're never quite there yet.

On a seperate note, the over-description has got so excessive in places that by the time I read the bit with the RWBY aura awakening, I laughed out loud. Ascribing meaning to something that exists solely for the Rule Of Cool is, for me, like trying to psychoanalyse cartoon characters. There doesn't have to be a meaningful reason, it just is.

Titans blood if Joe doesn't automatically have control over his size shifting. Then the Victor-Apeiron kurfuffle will be on free other foot. (The villains assuming Joe is taking advantage of the meeting to copy their powers)

Honest question, would the presence of the Workshop Crew in his head or his brain chemistry expertise help with the whole insanity thing? Is it something that can be mitigated?

Lethe of The Forgotten Filther be like: Why? He can already do what you people can but better! :V

Apprearance wise? The FMA one that nom off his arm and the Titan one, can't really remember the others. Mental wise is the Strong Spark one that was mentioned above.
