Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

Does Tattletale really get tortured regularly for information, living in fear of a thinker with a gun to her head waiting to shoot the moment she steps out of line? I was given to believe that was just persistent fanon, and that Tattletale could actually sneak away and start a new life somewhere else fairly easily. She just doesn't because she thinks she can figure out how to take Coil down and take control of his assets, a belief Coil allows her to keep as a way of keeping her in his service.

Did I pick up fanon from somewhere, or is that about right? Anyone know where to find a relevant quote in Worm itself?

I'd say impressed. LordRoustabout has crammed a huge amount of content into that time frame not because of the story going nowhere, but because the story is going to so many places.
Tbh, it feels like watching a Dungeon Master at work, cause whatever outline he's got going on is going to get thrashed by the result of the power rolls, especially now that the higher-tier powers are being involved. A good example is Tattletale getting that fancy watch; who knows how that alone will impact how Coil deals with her, and this is before anything else Jozef creates for the Undersiders, or whatever he might do within or without Brockton Bay.

I think one of the major reasons Joe overestimates Coil is Coils tenuous connection to Cauldron giving a "false positive" of sorts in regards to Coils danger level.

That's not going to happen. That is a drawback, which is strange since it increases the power of a perk, but since all abilities work as if post-jump Joe gets the benefits without the downsides; protagonist-level demigod powers without fate-enforced monster encounters. That said, with the mess he is in right now that barley matters anyhow.
It seems like it's a perk with a mandatory drawback attached to it - circumvented by the particulars of the Celestial Forge setup in this story.

edit: technically circumvented, but technically with the gambit pileup going on Joe was sorta already experiencing the effects of the drawback.

This story does have brakes on its pacing. LordRoustabout has a tendency to go off on long tangents in the middle of an action. At the start of chapter 33, Joe takes about a thousand words to get out of bed. In chapter 34, he spends 1400 words walking across his workshop. He throws in scenes like the lava surfing just for fun, with no plot impact and little attached character development.

But none of that affects the pace of events in in-story time. He wouldn't miss any events for taking too long to get out of bed at 3:30 AM. From the other characters' points of view, everything's happening too fast to keep track of.

I think its more that Taylor was thinking of using the recording features to help her "catch" the Undersider's Sponsor. Remember, she's now much more determined/vindicated in her "undercover" work because she misunderstood Joe's explanation of his Thinker power in helping her, despite his assertions to the contrary.

Erm... Did you forget to copy the actual perk description?

Also.... Poor Joe. He had too much on his plate without fiat-backed assurance that he'll almost never get time to rest.
Joe is so far past that already it's not funny, lol. I think atm he's using something like 1/10th the required materials once all his perks factor in (don't forget the one that lets him build something at 1/5th scale and have it come out full sized, assuming he doesn't want 5 of them), before this new perk.

The text here is from part of the Divine Child Perk. Lord decided that since the text said you could take this drawback for no points to get a benefit Joe could instead spend 300cp.

I'm pretty sure the actual thing Joe's power is pinging on is Noelle

Sounds possible. In canon Taylor wasn't giving much thought to Sophia or Emma while she was tunnel visioning on capeshit.

It pays to remember and mention that Taylor only really gives a crap about what will validate her and make her feel better, so doubling down on her "must take down The Boss" is pretty much her primary concern, and because of a mixture of guilt and a need to prove she doesn't need a baby sitter (since that would take away control), rather than lash out at Joe for trying to keep an eye on her, she's going to try to get to the finish line and call Joe a step away from crossing it, since technically all he said was she didn't go into a fight without him, not that she doesn't do 90% of the other work involved in catching the mastermind.

I don't think its a false positive. Coil is one of the most dangerous parahumans in the entire world if he knows where to find you and wants you dead badly enough. There are plenty of ways to avoid either the first or second, but Joe's shard doesn't seem capable of communicating anything that specific such that Joe would understand the nature of Coil's threat.

It seems as though Joe and everyone he interacts with are turning into mini Golden Idiots. It's getting to the point that Joe may as well adopt the Undersiders. Lisa is just as toxic as his sister with how easily she is manipulating his already fucked up head

'dealing with Coil' thing. Or at least Coil 'suddenly' being a lot less certain of his control over his 'pet's pet tinker', when things suddenly go very unexpected in an alternate timeline if/when Joe decides to ignore his passenger. Hell the timing is so on the spot for that relationship souring, I almost want to expect March is involved somehow.

Problem is, Coil's response to Tattletale 'resisting' arrest is going to be a brief moment of blind panic, followed by an ever-escalating amount of gun to break the shield in disposable timelines.

That's what I'd do if I were Coil, though even he might not have time for that. The Bay's turned into even more of a powder keg than it ever was in canon. Expending his save file gathering intel on the Undersiders's shields might mean Noelle does something unexpected or something mundane goes wrong... And then he has to choose between two bad situations.

I don't think its a false positive.
Not Coil's connection to Cauldron. Noelle.
Clone spammer. Power stealer. Regenerating Brute. Titan.

At this point, Lisa is less manipulating Joe (she can't even consistently hide anything from him, which must really burn) and more just saying "I am withholding stuff, but I swear it's for a good reason"! and then flailing around trying to do things.

Granted that's not much better, but reminder: Joe has more than enough leverage to press Lisa for details, or just aggressively monitor her and set spy drones around her.

He's not because that's not a very Joe-like move.

So, Taylor is going to out herself with the new super watch right? She can't actually use the evidence she gains from the watch because who it is from and is suspect because of it.
1. She can use 'sound only'
2. Year 2300 software+panaramic and likely 3d camera probably can do miracles, be that 'shots' from the side or emulating low quality, 'retro' camera. But Taylor will probably be overwhelmed first by sheer size of the file than she will try to mitigate it.
3. Taylor wasn't necessary thinking about her bullies, she might have been planning to go 'spy' onto someone else (even if unlikely).
4. She also might have been planning to take snapshots of her own homework 'in progress' to be able to complain to teachers. If you have a photo of half-finished work with you in the background it becomes far easier to prove ownership (I assume that bullies in question are smart and don't steal handwriten work, because if teacher refuses to compare handwriting...). Or she will just use this to submit some homework digitally...
They might also assume that he broke the Unwritten Rules because how else would he have known to record a Ward in their civilian life.
In this particular case you can't take 'assumptions' and 'suspicions' to the court.
Knowing identity of a cape is not breaking the rules, outing someone or using said identity is (and reporting a crime doesn't count as using).

There are plenty of ways to avoid either the first or second, but Joe's shard doesn't seem capable of communicating anything that specific.
Plus Coil supposedly has explosive options under his 'bond-villain' base that will kill a lot of people if activated, even informational 'bombs' are enough to destabilize BB. Going after Coil unprepared is likely to end badly for civilians.

IIRC, it's a bit of both.
Coil does what he can to keep a 'safe' timeline, so if anything goes wrong he doesn't lose anything from making a decision, this would also apply to torturing Tattletale, because if his safe timeline is sitting at home and chokes to death on a too-large bite of steak, then he's lost his thinker.
By the same token, having Tattletale come in to his base while his other timeline is in a meeting at PRT headquarters, that lets her go over what he's learning a few seconds after he does, and since he's dropping the timeline where she came to his base anyway, plus what are the odds of something happening while he's in the PRT building itself.
Tattletale does want to beat Coil, but probably not if the risk is too high. The problem is Tattletale could have run, but she got caught the first couple times she tried, IIRC, and got herself into a logic loop.
She assumes she needs a more complicated plan, while the plan that would work best is literally to not have one, just grab her bug-out bag and go, roll some dice or something each day to decide if today is runaway day. And if it is, head straight to a long term parking lot, borrow a car, and don't stop for anything but gas until you're two states away.

Rough Timeline (Whamodyne)
Someone mentioned Timeline. I've updated my version through chapter 93 - Loom and Thread

Rough Timeline:

Friday April 1st 2011 - Joe triggers at his parent's home in Captain's Hill neighborhood due to stress and depression at a toxic family dinner. Yes, Joe did trigger on April Fool's Day. There is a joke there somewhere I feel it.

Friday, April 8th - Start of the story.

Sunday, April 10th - Joe goes out as a cape for the first time, encounters Oni Lee and then the Undersiders. Joe's first fight.

Thursday, April 14th - Joe delivers the knives to the Undersiders in the morning, they rob the bank at noon, Joe has a chat with Amy and heals her in the afternoon. The PRT learns of Joe for the first time.

Sunday, April 17th - Joe rescues Weld from the bottom of Brockton Bay, has a chat with Director Armstrong. Aisha Laborn follows Joe home into his workshop.

Monday, April 18th - Garment Gloves has meet and greet with Protectorate at the gym in the morning. Afterwards Joe chats with Lisa then gets a call from Aisha in trouble at ABB financial center. Joe for the first time has a serious loadout prepared and ready, busts into ABB financial center, rescues Aisha, messes up ABB finances, fights Uber and Leet and displays ability to repair, upgrade and integrate other tinker's work into his own during combat. Joe's third fight. Joe acquires a volcano. Joe briefs Aisha on his powers. Finds out March is the ABB thinker, and she has an annihilator ability. Has a call with his sister that causes emotional stress. With Aisha's help, makes Lethe water and Celestial Bronze. Makes Ren, his first named object, to help Aisha control her power. Gives Aisha omnitool watch.

Tuesday, April 19th - Acquires Veritech VF-2SS Valkyrie II main variable space fighter. Joe surfs the volcano. Joe trains against the duplicates. Meets Taylor in the library, discovers she is the daughter of his old faculty advisor. Goes to Taylor's home, meets and is questioned by Danny Hebert. Amy learns of her family backstory. Joe acquires his first 600 point perk, Master Craftsman. Has thirty four more 600 point perks left in the Celestial Forge to go. Joe goes online, chats with Weld and then meets Dragon. Starts tinker confab with Dragon which ends when emergency is formally declared in BB. Joe attempts to bribe Dragon with reproducible fusion power to continue confab, pushes idea that she is Mastered. This triggers Dragon to attack Joe. He fights in retreat, finally tapping into the Labratorium ability to fight against hostile AIs and defeats Dragon. She considers him a scoundrel. After Dragon fight, Joe goes out and puts out docks wide fire set by Lung rampaging earlier that night. Both Dragon and Dragonslayers decide to head to Brockton Bay.

Wednesday, April 20th - Joe talks with the Undersiders about their debt to him and what he is looking for. Gives them scaled down omnitool watches. Makes wrong assumption over the source of his "I am Iron Man" perk. Garment Gloves visits the bank to get a business loan, choses retail location a block from the gym. Joe researches Natural Alchemy potions and starts developing hand crafted divine nanotech.

Thursday, April 21st - Joe and Garment work together to make new boots and combat uniforms for each other. Joe builds a mantic energy circuit throughout the entire volcano base. Joe's duplicates turn Trauma the lantern shield into a soul bound wristband that anchors a subspace inventory. Joe upgrades his cerebral implant to be Shatterbird proof. Spars with Fleet driving the Motoroid, gets a feel for Boots of Kickass. Survey creates ID of "Delphine Mertens", lawyer for Garment. Garment signs lease, starts to move into her new shop. Aisha introduces her father to Garment in new shop, they discuss Aisha working there. Joe gives Aisha her power armor. Joe patrols into ABB territory, triggers tripwire set by March. Joe, Bakuda and March banter on video call as he traces connection to their location. Fight between Joe and ABB spreads across the city. Joe acquires two Gundam robots and related perks. A duplicate heals Chen and gives him a magic sword, armor and unlocks his Aura. Joe makes public his city wide scans of ABB forces and bomb effects. A duplicate gets info on the dead man's switch, allowing them to trace all implanted bombs. Joe is ambushed by a swarm of Oni Lee's using March's sting attack, almost killing Joe and causing severe damage. March and Lung setup a televised execution. The life fibers embed inside Joe's body and around his organs, giving him enough power to fight back. March takes a serious blow and flies into a shipping container with a broken body. Oni Lee finally takes a serious hit and retreats. Lung ramps up even more. Joe gets the beast roar perk and turns into a half human, half Inostrancevia. Were-Joe fights Lung over the Bay. The duplicate shows up in a Gundam and takes over the fight. Dragon enters the fight against Lung in one of her powered suits. Joe and the Gundam kick Lung up into the sky so Lung can get hit by Fleet driving the motoroid at FTL speeds, killing Lung. Aisha shows up in armor, stealth flies Joe back to Garment's Shop and she and duplicate get him on the medical table to be worked on.
That night multiple sets of duplicates work on Joe, trying to figure out how to separate Tetra from him without killing either. As part of this Joe is given a new super heart made of exotic materials. While this is going on the Undersiders with their watches are sent into the "Dark Zone" as sensor platforms to send back into to Survey who reports it on the Apeiron info website. The duplicates use alchemy fission powered by souls to split Joe and Tetra from each other. Tetra and the divine nanomachines join The Workshop Crew as individuals. Joe finally figures out that his powers are based on fictional universes. Joe is looking forward to his session with Dr. Campbell.

Friday, April 22nd - Joe and the workshop crew talk over his powers and what known fictional universes some of them come from. Taylor once again makes wrong assumptions about her self assigned mission. Uppercrust has come to town, looking for some sweet, sweet healing. Joe calls Weld on his WardPhone(tm), lets him know that he is recovered and that he plans on taking a nap.
While Joe gets some much needed sleep Scion visits the site of the shardspace breach and fixes some dimensional damage and removes the Minovsky particles in the area.

Saturday, April 23rd - Joe, Tetra and Garment surf the volcano at dawn. Joe and the Workshop Crew put together relief supplies for Brockton Bay and distribute them anonymously across town, including a quarter ton of baking supplies to the gym. Mrs. Gartenberg declares challenge accepted. Joe receives texts from his sister which are exactly as you would expect, deflects the insults and promises to call when he can. Joe and the Duplicates face off in a three on three giant robot basketball tourney against the Workshop Crew of Tetra, Matrix and Fleet. All players are in their version of a giant mech, real or projected.
Joe goes out in the morning to visit the gym which is doing double duty as the neighborhood food bank with lots of baked goods. Doug offers Joe multiple opportunities to work as a mechanic which Joe politely turns down. Joe, using his newly acquired admin skills, helps organize the gym and the logistics of food distribution. Joe introduces himself to Theo Anders to thank him for helping out.
Joe meets Lisa and Brian for lunch. They want to talk about Somer's Rock which Joe knows as a dive bar he visited a few times from his college days. Joe is informed that Somer's Rock is neutral ground for Villains to meet and there is a summit the next night to talk about him. Joe agrees to show up in order to cool things down in town, and promises to deliver replacement costumes for the Undersiders to their lair that evening.
Just after leaving the lunch meeting Joe gains the Avid Glove which as a side effect triggers a global master effect of everyone knowing him as The Enigmatic Artificer. Joe tries to cut off the confusion but people are still kinda freaking out a bit.
Joe gets back to his workshop inside a closet at Garment's Studio just in time for Flechette and Kid Win to visit.
In the Workshop Joe knows that the best healing he can offer others is fully programmed nanite arrays. He pushes the Workshop Crew to start developing them with the EVO program. They transmute Elerium from XCOM to help with the nanites and psionics. Tetra shows Joe she can do Harry Potter magic. They find that Tetra can "feed" off Joe via the Avid Glove remotely, so she can always have a power source and recharge. Flechette has a serious thirst for Garment which Garment and Joe are both missing. Uppercrust choses now to visit the shop, introduce himself, and leave a card. Flechette is upset he interrupted her hitting on Garment and that she considers the Elite a threat to her love interest. Joe sees Flechette flare up some String power and starts to understand her importance to his passenger. Kid Win gets samples of Garment's more exotic fabrics and an awesome scarf. The Wards leave to report Uppercrust coming to visit.
Everyone in the Workshop is telling Joe it's time to call his sister in Chicago, the only family member he doesn't block. Joe then gains Thaumaturgical Focus: Alchemy which he uses as an excuse to put off the call. After talking it over with the duplicates, Joe decides to delay the sister call by first calling Taylor to talk about improved armor plates for her. These will also include reinforcement spells that will give her overall costume a defensive boost.
Joe calls his sister who refuses to take anything he says seriously, that he doesn't understand the situation around him, and treats him like a moron who should listen to his betters. This is the good sister. Joe explains about staying in town to care for a friend and the city and is not leaving and has commitments for the next evening (Somer's Rock) instead of Easter Dinner at the parents. Finally promises to stay safe and call after Sunday. To blow off steam, Joe and the Duplicates have an elemental weapon fight.
For the fourth time that day Joe has a short call with Aisha and promises for her to attend Movie Night that evening. Joe mentions that he now has the power of teaching and can teach her Ninja Moves and Alchemy. Aisha is interested but understands there is work involved.
Joe drops off the costumes to the Undersiders, chats with Alec. Tells Alec he is now healed and his coping mechanisms have been removed. Joe is informed again that the watch is making a big difference for Rachael in a good way. Joe visits the Hebert home, says hello to Danny and drops off Taylor's armor plates under some clothes in a bag of holding. Taylor now has some original Garment outfits and four cubic meters of room in a standard canvas tote bag for All The Bees.

Remember though, the events that lead to her having those traits either didn't happen, or were massively different.
IIRC, she didn't get threatened with cancer ect. by Panacea at all, or regular ol' brutality from Glory Girl in the same way.
The storage facility went very different, with the whole rest of the team getting taken down while she had to play hide and seek for her life until Apeiron arrived.
Her need for control grew out of those, and a few other, experiences, where her being in charge seemed to win the battle, or at least hold back defeat.
Instead we have, at the bank, the single upgrade of super sharp knives and her one baton, allowing them to plow through the Wards like a bullet through tin foil.
And at the storage facility, she sees Apeiron making sure everyone is on the same page, and even while directing the Undersiders still listening to their advice/concerns.
It wouldn't surprise me if she grows in a slightly different direction.

It's possible, although I think the inherent lack of trust from authority had percolated well before Joe's involvement, and Shards do pick hosts who specifically are well suited toward their usage, implying Taylor has a strong Type A personality streak.

Even if her disposition toward the White Hats is different, as well as her willingness to listen to others over pushing her own agenda (since it's at least reinforced there are other people than her who are competent and can get things done), her need to compete and achieve validation, her focus on being active, her aggression which leads to stressful situations and her impatience to get something tangible done are pretty much just pure Taylor.

I had a line of communication on each of them, and they were as well defended as I could manage without issuing blatantly obvious technology, like power armor.
Honestly, you could just rebuild their costumes without changing anything. You have enough modifiers that they might be tougher then the watch as it seems limited to mass effect physics. Maybe add some spider silk.

(Do the watches still tell time?)

*shudders* She really is a discount Contessa, once she shows up you can't help the small doubt of "Is March causing this?", as if one wasn't bad enough lol.
As all great thinkers do.

Ziz is sad that you forget her and Coil is happy that he is not in consideration.

I see Regent is taking this in stride.
Sadly the name 'Strider' was taken.

Scion does NOT show to the Leviathan fight, the heroes are on their own for this one
No, he shows up at the end. Not like him showing up could be anything, but the end of a Endbringer fight.

It is plausible that Joe could reveal something that makes the Endbringers stay the hell away.
The lab anti precog makes it so the end bringers don't know what he has built. So they won't avoid him.
I mean it would not matter much. He could probably build a transport (teleporter/plane/etc) system to anywhere in the world and just open his lab there. Best they could get is maybe an hour of him working on transportation vs him spending that time hardening places he cares about and making sure his social circle is safe.

Honestly, their best choice would be to either go to place he will not (CU) or just go to Brockton and deal with him sooner before gets months of tinkering in.

Also in Brockton, Joe has to worry about what he or Levi could break there like Taylor or Flechette.

The way things are going. I can see coil sending the travelers against him and joe ending up cloned after trying to help noelle or something. :p
"Focus all fire on the unequipped super tinker!"

This requires that he be able to stall in one of his timelines, of course. The way to beat Coil is to lock him into a sequence where stalling also leads to failure.
i.e. attack.

It lets him make the really advanced Transformers tech. Stuff where planet-sized mechs can be living entities. It's the most advanced non-magical tech in his library.
Seems big, mean, straightforward, and quite excessive. Just like Joe's normal stuff.

So, Taylor is going to out herself with the new super watch right? She can't actually use the evidence she gains from the watch because who it is from and is suspect because of it.
"Watch, move audio recording to phone and change the quality so that it could have come from a mundane recorder. "

IDK how to do internet posts... so here I go again:

I really loved the tiny time skip jumping right into the action starting with "What?" You did great LORD! I think that these recent chapters are more like where you should be headed, maybe a pattern? Like 1/2 chapter each Build > Interpersonal > Build > Action > Build > Perspective > Build... ect. So that we get, at max, half a chapter of building per chapter. Though hopefully Joe gets out of his 'constant need to improve always forever due to mental trauma' rut that he's in. I'm not a writer though so this is just opinion/guesswork.

I can see your talent and efforts adding up over time bringing you from a good to a great to a titanic writer. If you keep improving at this rate you will be one of the best. Keep learning and growing and trying to get better and you will. I'm looking forward to it.

(But still no pressure, you seem to be good at taking breaks when needed, so keep it up)

I'll be cheering for you.

(I was really hoping for the Free Feylne, but Joe already has Best Girl Garment, so no biggie)

PS to everyone else: Coil's power is actually precognition. If he tries to precog something that Joe would act on while Joe is under nth dimensional protections then it won't work. So no giant robots unless Joe is outside of his base when the precog/time split occurs.

Joe is trying and failing to be self aware of his mental changes. He thinks 'wow Dragon is just like me' rather than 'wow Dragon is just like these space robots that I think like' Not only that but he has 2 still-forming-AI kids right now and Dragon doesn't act or think like them, she acts and thinks like HIM. So obviously she has tech like he does but better. On the other hand, even with Joe's obliviousness he will realize it as soon as he can draw the comparisons. When she in her PHISICAL chassis gets in range of his technopathy... yeah he will know, he can't not understand what she is when he can directly commune with her via his power.

Also, it's too bad that Survey's search did not bring this up about IRON MAN: 'The character made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963), and received his own title in Iron Man #1 (May 1968).'
If the timeline only split after Zion's arrival, then should there be comic references to him (even if outdated and unpopular?)
