Also that reunion happened under Rei's/Shinji's Impact, had Gendo's plan gone perfectly my idea might have been the more likely result.

As to the name thing, for what it's worth Asuka's name is treated as if 'Langley' is not part of her last name on some screens. That is, sometimes her name is written out as Soryu, Asuka Langley in English on some screen graphics. There's no explanation given as to how Mari ended up as she is. She's Japanese Movie Foreigner (British), so I dunno.

EDIT: Just found this little gem in an article on the English Port of the NDS version.
Article: Come Sundays, players are treated to the shopping option. Rei can be bought different outfits and items which directly affect her stats and growth. The stores that appear in the game are real locations in Tokyo and each store sells items that reflect the type of store they are. The developers of this game had quite a sense of humor because they didn't hold back when dealing with their vision of a stereotypical otaku. For example, players can buy anime goods from a store named Animate. All these items tend to boost Rei's artistic talent and imagination while also severely deducting her social skills. Should she achieve the rank of true hermit and social outcast, players will be able to go to the costume shop and outfit her in the infamous bunny suit.
And remember: you, the player, her legal guardian, can romance Rei.

Reading that, along with some of Gob Hoblin's fics, gave me a more political based Eva idea fic. Specifically the jssdf, a Japanese army, massacred a NERV base, a U.N. multinational base, filled with people of different nationalities, like American Asuka. If the EOE assault failed, I can see the shit storm happening, with other nations coming down on Japan and why the JSSDF was murdering unarmed civilians, of different nations.

I imagine Shinji's and Asuka's attitude towards Gendo would be altogether more homicidal in A&T if it were canon and they found out about it. The relationship between Rei and Gendo as it is in the show is disturbing enough already, so I'm happy they didn't go that route.
