I don't think that Shinji would be able to interfere at all, honestly. With the way I personally envision Arael's attack to work, Shinji putting himself in the beam's way wouldn't work as a way to watch what Asuka is going through, because all of that is happening inside of Asuka's mind and I'd be hard pressed to believe in any meta-physical way for Shinji to be able to breach that particular barrier.

On the other hand, Arael could dig through Shinji's memories as well and have him go through something similar to Asuka. In that case, maybe the two of them could find themselves reliving a weird amalgamation of memories made out of their combined experiences during the battle, and have to deal with the fallout of mixed memories after the battle.

That
might be interesting to see. :)
Arael needed to first break through Asuka's own AT Field before accessing memories so it's not big stretch to assume that this collapse in barriers will allow for AT Fields of everyone involved to mix a little. Add unfamiliarity with human mind and Angel may push them together on purpose.

All this is raising a question for me. In the original, the plan was that Rei would shoot Arael, with Asuka acting as support. But Asuka refused to take a backseat and took point instead.

Here's my question: what would've happened if Rei had taken point?

Here's my question: what would've happened if Rei had taken point?
And Asuka only took point because she was in the middle of her downward spiral and knew Misato was deliberately sidelining her. That's not going to happen here. She'll have no reason to push her way in front like she did. On the other hand Unit-01 is also unlikely to be locked down due to aftereffects from the 14th Angel, so there's no reason for him to be out of play either. All you can say for sure is that the canon events won't happen as we know them.

I feel like a gunfight between Rei and Kaworu would be a total waste of time. Like two battleships pelting each other with BBs (no pun intended).

Is it as bad as the American version of Cardcaptor Sakura, which they chopped up and attempted to turn into a story about a boy collecting magic cards while being aided by a female classmate?
The version of Cardcaptor Sakura I saw involved Sakura and Li catching the cards mostly independent of each other, each with a female classmate hanger-on (Sakura had Madison as a costumer/videographer, while Li had Meilin as a fangirl/annoying childhood friend). It was, in fact, Li and Meilin's past together that allowed him to catch the Twins card, as that card was much like Israfel.

I did say attempted, not succeeded. But yeah, that's what the attempt turned into.

Maybe I'm bad at putting my ideas into words (which doesn't bode well if I ever do start writing :D), but my intention would be for Shinji to interpose himself between Asuka and Arael, thus shifting Arael's focus completely to Shinji. He saves Asuka from further assault by Arael by exposing himself instead.
I actually thought about this a bit last night while waiting to fall asleep.

Let's ignore how Shinji gets Unit-01 moving, because that doesn't matter. What I thought of was Unit-01 essentially rugby tackling Asuka to try and get it out of the beam. Doesn't work, of course, the beam just follows. But when it finishes refocusing, Unit-02's on the ground with Unit-01 on top, trying to cover it. Since they're both in the beam, but Shinji's 'first', all his horrible memories get shared with Asuka. And the way Shinji lost his mother is just as bad (if not worse than) Asuka's tragedy.

End result: Shinji ends up catatonic or close to it after that memory gets dragged fully to the surface, and realises that he's sitting in the thing that ate his mother. While Asuka still got a bad part of the mind-rape, she sees that Shinji's past is just as traumatic as hers. That's enough to get her moving to pull Shinji out of his Eva and into a hug. The magical power of a cooldown hug goes to work on both of them, a bit of WAFF and 'we're both the same' happens, and bam. Divergence.

Oh, and everybody hates Gendo Ikari even more. Win win!

I like the way you think. It hinges on Asuka overcoming her fears enough to reach out to him, which I imagine is even harder to do right after such an ordeal, but such concerns are secondary next to the great potential for WAFF.

That sounds like a good plan.

Ooh. Sounds like a something I could explore and write. But I'll have to rewatch EVA first, and we all know how pleasant of an experience that is. :3

The whole thing about this inspiring other people to write Eva fics reminds me that I had an idea for one back in 2010-12 when I was in grad school. I kept all my notebooks so if anyone is interested in the ideas I had I'll go hunting for it. It will be a brave adventure full of risk. After all, it is probably under my bed and I am allergic to dust-mites.

Ok, I found it and it was indeed under my bed. So, this would have just been my own personal AU. Some things I did have:

1. Given the heavy use of Judaeo-Christian symbolism I was going to have a total of 40 angels: which counted the canonical 18, the two from the first two Rebuild movies, a few from the extra-canonical and pre-production plans, and a few good ones from the Angel-Eva Creation Competitions over on the EvaGeeks Forums. I can go into detail about this if anyone is interested. Though I will mention that two from the competitions were a Tree with clear spring symbolism, and an ice dragon that brings winter to Japan for the first time in 15 years. It gave me the idea that contrary to SEELE's belief that humanity needed to evolve as the angels were defated the changes that were made to the biosphere were slowly being reversed.

2. I wanted to make it a more global affair as well as having more Evas, which makes sense with the increased # of angels. This would include Mari.

3. Unknown to everyone involved Yui had been pregnant during the Contact Experiment. While she herself was absorbed her unborn child was not. The genetic material from this unborn child became the basis for Rei.

4. I don't know who here is familiar with the Eberron campaign setting from D&D but in it there is a thing called the Draconic Prophecy. It amounts to a long list of prophecized happenings. Long lived people try to play the game of the Prophecy because how it works is that these passages can be interpreted in different ways. It becomes trying to make the present coincide to your interpretation to get the next series of events you want. If you want z to happen you need to make sure x happens how you want to get to y. If x happens differently you could get b instead. You may be able to manipulate it back towards z but it could just as easily become c. If that makes sense. Anyways, in addition to the instruction manual this is how the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls would have worked, having long lists of prophetic combinations that had been passed down through the millenia. I would have had translated passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls at the beginning of (relevant) chapters. The first for example would have started something like, "The Prince returns to the city of his birth after many long years. It will be the beginning of the tribulations he will face that will see him rise up and become a legend." The twist for this first one...

5. Shinji runs into another boy on the train that is also going to Tokyo 3 and, unknown to him, also fits the prophetic criteria. Kaworu. Now it is absolutely imperative to Gendo's plans that Shinji get in the fucking robot. If he doesn't and Kaworu does he will be interpreted as the Prince figure and Gendo will have to go into some serious backup plans.

6. The second-to-last final prophecized messenger/angel is one in the form of a man but with a greater angel's soul. There are two that fit this criteria. As the other angels are destroyed both feel the urge to return to their greater self. When it is Kaworu that sacrifices himself against Armisael out of his love for Shinji the urge becomes too great and it is Rei that becomes the final angel trying to reunite with Lilith. Gendo is a complete shell by that point because he knows with Kaworu dead his ace-in-the-hole must be destroyed as the final angel.

It would have been interesting, I just had too much real life stuff on my plate plus way too little skill as a writer to ever do it justice.

You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

:p

Another fic (or rather two fics, one by a different author picking up where the first left off) had Shinji get... psychic powers or something.
That sounds like it could be really interesting or really awful, with very little room for anything in between.

"I mustn't run away. I mustn't run away. I mustn't run away. I mustn't run away. I mustn't run away. I mustn't run away..."
"...Asuka, why are you mumbling?"

You haven't, by any chance, been watching Stargate: SG-1 recently, have you?

Character Notes #76 - Kaji
Unless episode 21 has a Director's Cut version that add more than what I've seen yeah Kaji is an idiotes. OK so I think this is relevant to his character so here is my thoughts on who Kaji is:

He is a man who has been trained in spy craft, probably recruited right out of finishing his higher education after Misato broke up with him, trained in all the skills and culture of spy craft, but none of the techniques for outside of the box thinking or for any kind of social engineering. See I think that Kaji was never more than a simple Nerv agent and as such he was never trained to do anything more than his own job. Combine that with his own lack of interest in anything outside of his job and his broken personal life and you have the kind of spy who is used as a scapegoat in someone else's plans which is what happens when Kaji is framed for kidnapping Fuyutsuki and then subsequently killed while meeting a contact (I think that his killer was that cat lady he was investigating Nerv with since I suspect that Seele used Kaji to do an independent investigation of Nerv and keep an extra set of eyes on Gendo and the Evas). Also for all that Kaji is someone who cares about the people around him, he doesn't understand them. His surprise and discomfort with Asuka's crush on him, yet the inability or/and unwillingness to sit down with Asuka to acknowledge and work trough her reasons for latching on to him romantically is a good example of his lack of understanding of the people around him. Another good example is that he tried to seduce Maya (a lesbian) to get info on Project E after he failed to get anywhere with Ritsuko.

As for if Kaji will die in this fic? That depends on if Seele will need a scapegoat in the current sequence of events and if nobody points out to Kaji that for all that he is trained in all the skills and culture of spy craft he has never actually been taught to improvise in a bad situation or how to navigate the political side of the spy world.

Edit: Ah crap forgot to explain why the scene at the end of Episode 20 is relevant to Kaji's character. It's simple: he assumes that Misato (who is not a Nerv agent but a Nerv commander) knows the old spy trick of I shove an item in one of my orifices and smuggle it that way and is on the same page as him as to understanding that this particular nookie they are having is for spy times and not for fun times and just starts inserting the pill/capsule. Can you tell for how many things he assumed Misato was on the same page with him in that one scene that she was not? No wonder Misato is confused when he start shoving a foreign object into one of her orifices.
Ok, now that it's evening, I can take this more fully. Kaji's employer is only mentioned briefly in the series, mentioned some more in the manga, and only really clearly laid out in the Red Cross Book and other canon published materials. Kaji is a quadruple agent: A UN inspector who is spying for SEELE but who is really spying on SEELE for NERV but really working for the JMoI. Though as his suicidal last run shows, he's really just using all of that for his own quest for the truth.

Kaji's ultimate employer is the Japanese Ministry of the Interior, not SEELE. He's assigned to infiltrate NERV and find out what they're really up to, since the official story of Second Impact is known to be just that, a story. His cover is 'UN Inspector', and as such he is able to act as a public official, moving between NERV bases, checking out things like the Marduk Institute. This is what you see him doing in Episode 15, checking out buildings nominally being part of the Institute. In the course of his investigation, he uncovers the existence of SEELE, and somehow makes contact with Gendo (these two things are likely linked) and when in NERV-3 Berlin, steals Adam from SEELE somehow (You'd think they'd have ALL THE SECURITY on that) to deliver it to Gendo. This is the package he considers so important he ditches Misato and the Children and flies away when Gaghiel attacks the fleet.

He is trained as a spy and infiltrator, and does his job very well if he managed to snake Adam out from under Kihl Lorenz and SEELE. But there can only be a very small number of people who #1) know Adam even exists and #2) had access or even a chance to be near it. Once SEELE figured out it was stolen, they probably fingered Kaji as the culprit pretty quickly. When SEELE had Fuyutsuki kidnapped as a 'we known what you're up to' warning to Gendo, Kaji breaking in to rescue him is the last straw. Fuyutsuki even says so to him on the way out: 'This will cost you your life'. 'I just want to get closer to the truth,' Kaji replies. Gendo is sometimes suggested as the culprit for shooting Kaji, but I assess this as unlikely: He just rescued Fuyutsuki, and SEELE already knows where Adam has to have gone. There's no reason for Gendo to need to 'get rid of someone who might talk'.

When called on to settle the debate that Misato might have shot him, Anno definitively said no, it was a never-seen-as-a-character low-level gunman, not Misato.

Kaji didn't have a 'lack of interest in anything outside of his job'. He was in fact obsessed with discovering the truth behind Second Impact and the parties behind it, as a way of atoning for the failures that got his brother and friends killed in the aftermath of the Impact Wars. This obsession is what drives him to keep hunting, even when it becomes clear SEELE is going to kill him. That's what makes him leave what is basically an audio suicide note for Misato, and show no surprise when the killer appears. ('Yo. You're late.') He knew it was coming, and didn't even try to fight back.

Misato wasn't confused by his quest. She knew him too well, and by the time of the 'bedroom' scene, she's pretty much fully on-board with it. She's the one Kaji trusts to leave his accumulated discoveries and hacking tools to in that pill. That's the most heartbreaking part, and what makes Misato break down when she hears the message: She knows it means he's not coming back from this last mission, despite the fact that he and Misato had just gotten back together. He and Misato understood each other all too well at the end.

He's not surprised by Asuka's crush on him, though he is uncomfortable. She's half his age, and he's never gotten over Misato. When Asuka tries her clumsy, beer-fueled 'seduction' of him on the Over The Rainbow, his primary emotion isn't shock, its distraction: He has someone else on his mind, someone he's going to see tomorrow for the first time in years, yet who still consumes his thoughts. He tries to aim Asuka at Shinji, but mostly just ignores her attempts to 'woo' him, something that pushes Asuka to try ever-increasing tricks to get his attention, such as the 'HELP, I'M BEING KIDNAPPED! AAA!' phone call.

His 'seduction' shot at Maya doesn't seem serious. It mostly came off as a 'I'll see if I can sneak some MAGI access, but mostly annoy Misato who I can hear coming'. And Ritsuko (who clearly knows Kaji isn't being serious) is old college friends messing around (does Ritsuko look shocked or upset? Not at all, just amused), and again, annoying Misato. Why all the yanking on Misato's chain? Because even after 8 years, Kaji's never gotten over her lying to him about there being 'someone else' and her dumping him when they started to get serious. So he 'teases' her. Because to two emotionally scarred people like him and Misato, 'teasing' is a lot less frightening than being sincere.

To those of you hoping this was an update Alert, be calm: Update soon. 2000 words done, trying to wrap up the scene. Tomorrow, maybe.

This is the package he considers so important he ditches Misato and the Children and flies away when Gaghiel attacks the fleet.

I'm pretty sure this was the right call, given that if Gaghiel got ahold of Adam the world would be short one (1) human race. The interesting question is - Did Kaji actually know what he had stolen?

That sounds like it could be really interesting or really awful, with very little room for anything in between.
I tried to work out how to explain the mind power Shinji got, but It'd probably be easier if I just mentioned the fic name: The Power of Pain by Cory Holmes, which is just one chapter, and The Power of Pain Alternate by Izcer4, the continuation. I have the story saved, but I can't find it on the net at the moment. There's pretty much no action besides the Arael fight, it's mostly NERV picking up the pieces and dealing with what happened to the Evas and pilots. I wouldn't say it's a great story, but it's not bad.

An idea I've had kicking around is exploring what would happen if Shinji placed himself between Asuka and Arael right before it forced Asuka to relive her memory of opening the door to her mother's hospital room. It would likely soften the impact of Arael's attack on Asuka at least a little bit and would help Shinji relate to her through shared experience.

However, I'd most likely have to watch the Arael scene multiple times to get the details right, which isn't too attractive a prospect. For example, I'm not sure if it would be at all possible for Shinji to intervene since Unit-01 is being kept in stasis at the time, but I suppose you could handwave that away with righteous Yui-sama rage in reaction to Shinji's anguish.

Also, I'm lazy.

Still, I think it'd be interesting to see because I've not come across a scenario like that in any fics, so feel free to pick this up.

honestly i think it would have caused him to relive the day of the contact experiment, not Asuka's memory, but that is just my thoughts

edit: @Quadhelix on the matter of Censure/censor i stand corrected, damn English language and its homonyms.

Oy, @GoukaRyuu. I see I've been quoted in the Mark Watches comments. Hah. Drop my name next time? Or tell them about SV? It's cool to be cited, but publicity is cool too.

Can do!

In fact, given the episode covering tomorrow, I'll probably repost what you just posted above, unless you want to? Either way, don't worry, I will properly promote/cite you when i repost your comments from now on.
