This is why I'd have to disagree with that thread's conclusion that Asuka would have panicked or slapped Shinji if he'd taken the hint and tried to make a move on her. Given how hard Shinji's failure to act hit her, she really wanted him to try that night. The fact that he didn't hurt her more than she expected. Asuka may or may not be a prude/scared, inexperienced girl at heart, but she wanted Shinji to try and make her feel desirable. I don't think she'd have panicked, not least because she was the one 'initiating' things by making her request-hint, and one of the things she 'liked' about Shinji in that context is (for all that she loudly proclaimed it in public) she knew he wasn't a hentai-boy that would jump all over her. He was attractive to her, and low-threat, essentially. Safe.

Hmm, sounds like she was sabotaging herself in her quest to get Shinji to make a move on her, if that's what was really going on. Shinji likely interpreted her challenge as "Stay out, OR ELSE!" The "Walls of Jericho reference probably went straight over his head at 30,000 feet. If Asuka's "Walls of Jericho" speech was a bluff she wanted Shinji to call, she was reaching too far, too fast. Shinji just isn't the kinda guy to force himself on a girl, if a girl says "STAY OUT OF MY ROOM!" he's gonna stay out of the room. Way too much tsun-tsun for Shinji to overcome at that point in their relationship. Whatever other hints she had dropped before then also overshot the mark or just bounced off Shinji's ultra-dense head. She needed to ease him into it, instead of slamming an iron door on him, she should've set up a proverbial obstacle course for him to run, some objective for him to fulfill to gain entry. The way she did it in canon... despite the cleavage shot, that was essentially slamming the door in Shinji's face. Way too subtle for someone who'd yet to even reach First Base

This is what is known as a 'subtle hint', everyone. Let's not cause unhappy Staff in a thread that is rather heavily populated with such. We wouldn't want something to disrupt my momentum and not have an update this Friday, right? Since @kokuenDG, @minuseven, and @Álli Méra have already triggered the usual tradition.
"That's a nice update schedule you've got there.

"Be a shame if something were to... happen to it."
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the moderator that used to run around and interrupt threads with an Abrams tank barrel pointed straight at the unlucky reader's face.

Subtlety? What the hell is subtlety?

(Love you, Stryp. You're one of my favourites. :p)

Which seems plausible until you realize Asuka just walked into that room, but less than 5 seconds later opens the door back up on her knees to give Shinji the 'Jericho' line while making sure to give him a blatant shot down her shirt.

This means Asuka had to deliberately drop to her knees and position herself specifically to offer him that view. The shot of Asuka suffering crushing depression when she realizes he's not coming nails it home, but we don't see that until her flashbacks to the moment much later, during her mind rape.

You're not new this week! I've seen you around already. :p

Par for the course for these two, sadly. That's just what happened. Shinji took the warning at face value, and stayed the Hell away. Asuka didn't realize she'd shot way over his head, and interpreted it as active rejection. This is how communication usually goes in Eva. Self-sabotage is unfortunately very Asuka. :(

You know, that scene is an amazing point for Asuka/Shinji divergence stories. Probably even more so than the kiss. Why are there so few stories trying to tackle it?

I'm guessing that it's because the Kiss is an easier point of divergence if you don't want to turn it into a Lemon.
Also it's probably because quite a few people don't realise the meaning in Asukas actions during that scene. I for example didn't notice that she wanted Shinji to make a move until the point came up in this thread.

I love this thread. I fall asleep and then bam! three pages of content.

Ah! The economist's definition of love: "My utility curve incorporates your utility curve."

Why is that people swoon when you say it, but complain that I'm unromantic when I say it? It's basically the same thing, except mine is formulated in a mathematical equation, thus giving it greater rigor and certainty

why do i get the feeling you got this from xkcd?

Is there really anyone here that isn't a member of both sites? I posit that there isn't.

I'm not!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I guess Asuka's gambit would probably work for any boy who's german, since she does have a very western paradigm. It likely won't work on someone Japanese, much less Shinji
.

I'm a twenty something year old med school student with relatively normal life, and I have absolutely no idea what the fuck is that wall...

I've read a couple. It should not surprise you that they're lemons.
I'm guessing that it's because the Kiss is an easier point of divergence if you don't want to turn it into a Lemon.
Well, obviously I don't count lemons. And really, lemoning it is not only unnecessary, I think it's actually implausible. I highly doubt Asuka was willing to go even remotely that far, and Shinji is, well, Shinji. Keeping them in character I think the night would have ended awkwardly one way or the other, but with the right push it could have ended with less hurt and more understanding, which is perfect to get the ball rolling for a classic romance.

Read Joshua 6:1-27. I guess a lot of people not indoctrinated into Christianity (and then some of those who are - I doubt some of my fellow Catholics would, but I was raised by evangelicals on TV so I'd know) wouldn't get the reference.

I'm born of atheists parents and is an atheist myself :p. Never touched the bible in my life.
So any reference to it will fly over my head.

As a German I can, with complete confidence, say that I would have stayed out of her room because:
1) The Jericho reference went right over my head.
2) She said STAY OUT!
3) You just don't barge into the room of a half naked Girl unless she specifically tells you to.
5) I value my physical integrity.
6) ...
7) Profit!

I agree that this scene doesn't have to descent into lemon territory if you use it as a hook for a divergence story. But the lemon angle kinda presents itself in that scene, which is probably (purely speculation on my part) why people prefere the kiss over this scene for divergence stories.

1. I agree with you... but that doesn't stop the shippers.
2. Yeah, it would have been a very awkward night. I'd discuss it more, but I feel this is a bit off topic. Want to continue this over convo?

The Jericho bit could be a point of divergence without becoming a lemon, but it wouldn't be as 'strong' as the kiss scene.

Perhaps Shinji works out what she meant, unintentionally calling her bluff at the same time. Asuka learns that Shinji is interested in her enough to risk her 'wrath', perhaps gets a bit flirty to see if he notices anything more, but ultimately they would probably simply end up sleeping much closer together.

Later, the kiss scene happens, and Shinji understands enough to respond to Asuka the right way.

And as I write this, other people have already basically beaten me to the idea.

Watch some ones face when you tell them that the Bible was not Written by God.

Then remind them that it is in fact a collection of Testimonial Letters, and Journals.

Then you can tell them that Most of the New Testament can be read as Fanfiction of the Old Testament.

That King James had a The thing Rewritten to Justify his divorce, or at least to enable it.

As a history major (even at 14 I was a buff) I might have gotten the reference. At the same time I would question the intelligence of going in a girls room because of the conflicting signals. Though I might have gone over and knocked to ask for clarification.

Great... this whole talk of how the whole Jericho scene could've went down differently inspired more madness on my part,

so enjoy:

One quick look on Google through his NERV acquired Docomo SH06D later...

Shinji: Uh... Asuka... why would you tell me to keep out if Jericho's walls fell...? That's a pretty poor way of telling me to keep out.

*Asuka blinks and smiles he caught her bluff... only to growl he didn't figure the meaning behind why*

Asuka: Grrrr are you calling me stupid, stupid?!

Shinji: But I... well... uh.. um... well..

Asuka: Oh never mind! In or out?

Shinji: What....?

Asuka: In or out! One of those two answers promises pain, so choose wisely!

*Asuka raises her fist*

Shinji: How am I supposed to know which you want me to say?!

*Asuka sighs*

Asuka: Ach du Dummkopf... take a wild guess already stupid.

Shinji:................. *starts muttering to himself* I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away....

Asuka: UGHHH Pick already!

Shinji: IN! *Flinches, expecting pain to follow*

*Asuka smiles, rears her fist as if to follow through with the punch, only to pat him on the head instead*

Asuka: Good boy, you choose... wisely.

*Shinji Faints*

Asuka: Ach du Dummkopf... *drags a unconscious Shinji into her room and closes the door*

Damn! If I wasn't the only person awake on this floor I'd have gotten some funny Looks. Nice work. :)
