It was then debated that the spare clone he had was the one that got turned into Rei-III, since(IIRC) the Reiquarium had been blown up before Armisael, and the scene just felt out of place due to weird positioning in the flow of the chapter. The debate was basically concluded at that point.

That 'out of place' was entirely deliberate. It was me trying to be sneaky and hint at Rei IV's existence but not give it away too much. Notice that there's been another scene or two since then of Gendo talking to a Rei Ayanami, who didn't talk too much?

When I see Quattro, I'm not thinking of the Anima novels, but Nanoha.

Granted, Rei!Q certainly isn't gonna be like that. However, I dread the possibility of Kaworu meeting her, and in the possible confusion, what comes next. 😨

I see your point. Either way, I think Rei 4 was an intentional choice due to what four is synonymous with in Japan.

A thought, though. Looking at the existence of a further Rei here has got me wondering. What's the highest numbered Rei incarnation any work, be it official or fanon, gone up to? Or at least the highest one that people know of? I'm curious.

Nope, I've had my eyes opened.

Kaworu's thoughts on our Rei mention that her song hasn't changed, still is as fractured as ever. That means that Unit Zero/Zerogōki's soul is now in Rei IV. And Rei is another word for zero, IIRC.

I think I saw something like Rei XVII mentioned in Asuka's backstory in a fic where everyone (possibly including the Angels?) was a peggy sue from a different continuity.

Aw... crud. If Rei 1 soul is in Rei 4, (Roman numerals is a pain to type on mobile. Sue me) then she would likely flip out at Ritsuko.

Who wouldn't suspect a thing because she owed Rei for her life.

So I idly investigated what "rei shi" might mean and found that reishi is the Japanese name for a bracket fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Yyyeah... the Asuka from that 'verse was not happy. She was so broken and emotionally dead from losing Shinji, then Rei over and over, she threatened to murder the 'loop-'verse' Shinji with a broken glass the moment they met, to keep everyone away from her so she wouldn't have to suffer the loss again. :(
Even worse that this Shinji was the 'canon' one, who had made up his mind on the start of the loop to do better with Asuka, Once More With Feeling-style, and communicate with her. So encountering not the canon girl he expected, but a burned-out and nearly insane veteran who'd seen all her friends die was... jarring.

(I wish Dazed and Confused had a happy ending. It just kind of petered out, AFAIK.)

Besides that one, on the original question, Anima has Rei's III, IV, V, and VI all running around at once.

I have forgotten the name of the fic, but I remember one time where Rei basically assumed direct control over all of her clones at once. She emptied the entire Reiqurium and marched a one woman war for a bit. ....it's going to bug me all night I can't remember which one that was.

I read that as Darth Rei at first, and now I'm just imagining Rei and Rei duking it out with lightsabers like it were the end of episode 3 :V

The furthest in fanfics I read was Rei VII, in Thousand Shinji.
Which was actually rather significant, when you consider Nurgle's sacred number is seven.

I remember a scenario in that vague vein either here or on SB where the author took suggestions for names for the individual Reis.

Asking Internet for names often ends badly (SFW, that's one of the tame examples). On the subject, in a snippet I made once (based on idea thrown around here), Reis began to awaken on their own, and started naming themselves Reia, Reib, Reic, etc. - at least to the outsiders.
 
I seem to recall it going reasonably well in the case of Ranma's fic :)

"The management reserve the right to reject submissions for reasons of quality, taste, or decency" was implicitly in force.

Now, now, now. It could just be you gave Stryp an idea for a new WAFF fic. Like when Shinji was doing that test with Unit 00, him and the Soul withing connected on a deep level, and this somehow allowed the piece of Rei's Soul in there to come out to have fun. She'd be a "dark" Rei to normal Rei.
...Wait. Didn't i already suggest that? Back for a potential Franxx crossover where the pilots take over as the "core" of the Eva's instead of their moms?

One of which is a loli for some reason i probably don't want to want the answer to, and the other is the villain who killed one of the other Rei's. I swear Rei dies more then Kenny that i honestly saw that coming a mile away.
