This strongly indicates Asuka's major in college was Theoretical Physics... nice, that could turn humanity (well what's left of it) into Type I civilization.
I tried matching what this would do up to more scales than just the Kardashev one, starting with GURPS Tech Levels.

Quickly concluded that Eva-verse Humanity is already right at the top with early Level 11 (Exotic Matter tech, albeit with heavy backwards leanings into Levels 10, Robotic, and 9, Nanotech), though this development would definitely spread that level from just NERV and SEELE to humanity in general, who at present are probably around a late but stunted Level 8 (Digital tech).

@Fate/Online

Your description of reading the Apocrypha exudes much apprehension! It reminds me of one particular movie moment...

Elrond's counsel debating whether to take the ring to Mt. Doom in LOTR: Fellowship. The chapter notation called it the "Edge of the Precipice"

And a recommendation for you, OP, anyone reading, on what to read/write a spinoff about next!
https://forums.spacebattles.com/thr...rm-x-neon-genesis-evangelion-complete.531394/ 🍺

But why not combine the two, and make a Worm - NGE - LOTR mosh pit? Just my two centavos.

Because we know she goes for range attack.

Anyway, woot! OP, excellent update, glad I was online to catch the new post!

...well... Fuck.

Hey, uh... Anyone remember that time, months if not a year ago where there was that scene which a bunch of us thought was odd for Rei and thought might be another clone but eventually just passed off as her putting on the act for Gendo?

Because... yeah.

I recall it started after one scene of Gendo's implied he had an extra clone, and then the timing of a scene of Rei speaking to Gendo seemed like he was talking to a newly awakened one. It was then debated that the spare clone he had was the one that got turned into Rei-III, since(IIRC) the Reiquarium had been blown up before Armisael, and the scene just felt out of place due to weird positioning in the flow of the chapter. The debate was basically concluded at that point.

Which then brings up the question of where THIS clone came from, if it is indeed a Rei-Q.

There's a lot of ways this can go, I suppose... I admit I'm kind of hoping that Gendo's Mysterious Bonus Rei is less under his thumb than he thinks she is; but I strongly suspect he's gone to a much older brainscan to get this one going - he wouldn't go to the trouble of setting up an extra if he didn't at least suspect what main!Rei was up to.

That's another question - the reason Rei's backups were halted was because they seemingly do NOT have the ability to keep multiple previous versions, and they were worried about mental contamination.

So, where did Rei-Q's mental image come from? Is she actually a decanted blank slate? Cause if she's from Ristuko's most recent backup, Rei-Q will still be more loyal to Shinji and Asuka than Gendo.

I wonder if Rei IV actually knows how to use her AT field like Rei can, because that would be a very quick way for Kaworu to find out it's a fake.

There's no way. She might be able to match a baseline Rei, but Rei-III has restored her connection to Lilith, and gained access to all of Lilith's memories(and presumably power). Lilith!Rei would wipe the floor with any other isolated Rei.

Ah. So we've gotten the spacewank chapter, eh? I suppose being SV/SB, it's inevitable we get a chapter salivating over technology and whatnot.

Mirror match! Mirror match!

I'm going to go with 'blank slate', personally. She seems very robotic and willing to follow orders to the letter.

This is true. Whilst I'm sure Gendo's at least twigged a little by now that Rei II/III is no longer entirely aligned with his scenario, hence his decanting Q in the first place, I don't think he's had many chances to glean just how far Rei's come. This, I imagine, will play a part in both his and Rei Q's undoing.

The only worry is whether or not anything happens to the others at Q's hands before then.

Something will happen, almost certainly - the extent of it though depends on how merciful Stryp is feeling.

Edit: actually, this is a perfect way to have a proper Kaworu vs. Rei fight.

Kaworu: "You are not Rei, even if you have her face. I shall have to correct that."

Shoulda known gendo had an ace up his sleeve. Though you got to question its effectiveness. Frankly, it's impossible for Darth Rei to get Kaworu alone. Excluding the pilots, Misato would watch him like a hawk. However AT powers mean that excluding Rei Prime and Kaworu, no one else can help.

As for how this could happen. Well, A&T went with the "Unit 00 is Rei I," side of the theory and under that logic it was possible for 2 versions of Rei to exist at the same time. Most likely, when Ritsuko revived Rei, Gendo considered her compromised. And decided to make his own.

"And I would never want to," Kaworu finally managed to rasp. He cleared his throat and tried again. "As long as my friends live, as long as any of humanity lives, I will never. Never by my will. There is too much beauty in this world."

Cue foaming at the mouth. Strypgia, is it okay to use this bit of dialogue sometime down the road in another fic? It's perfect! I'd just have to figure out who resembles Kaworu enough in the other series.

edit:

Well. Can't say I saw that one coming ! Gendo really is an asshole ! I should know better than to underestimate him at this point !

This was the guy who took only 3 and a half years to get more funding than several JSDF budgets in order to build prototype and test EVAs plus have first dibs on Germany's production grade Unit-02. Then with most of the world still reeling from a contact experiment gone awry, he lets Yui die, puts other crew remains in the Magi, and clones his dead wife some fifteen years younger than when he last saw her.

"Kaji, was zur Tuefel?!"
'zum Teufel'
Gendo stared across his desk at the key to all his plans. His perfect weapon. "The time is near. SEELE has begun to move. Are you ready to fulfill your destiny and function?"

"Yes."

"Then it is time to kill the last Ange
Are we going with Rei IV or Rei Q for this one?
I was more thinking of Reigōki. :p

One as for the meat puppet Rei corpse I fucking called it (THANKS for making me retroactively correct)
Two

She's hovering right out of sight of the door.
Fun thing, you never know with Rei.
"Was I this clueless?" Shinji muttered to Asuka.

"Yes, you were, baka, I love you anyhow."
"Was?" :p
Kaji, was zur Tuefel?!
I was about to say. :p

Let's hope nu-Rei doesn't cause too much trouble. Even if she's not really like our Rei, she'd be close enough to use a fatal moment of confusion...

"Misato-san?" Shinji interjected quietly.

The Operations Major looked at the Third Child.

"I hate this job. I hate every time I have to get into the unholy thing that ate my mother, go out into battles that scare me senseless, and risk dying for a world I never much gave a damn about. I hate every second of it. But I do it. Do you know why?"

"You save lives every time you do, Shinji. You do something only you five can do and protect everyone alive."

Shinji shook his head. "Misato, do you remember when I ran away for a few days, shortly after I got here? And you had to have Section Two's goons drag me back from Kensuke's campout?"

Misato nodded. After Shinji's risky disobedience of orders during the fight with the Fourth Angel, he'd run away from the stress. Section Two having to drag him back had earned him a chewing out from her. In response, Shinji had asked to resign as an Eva Pilot and leave. Only talking to his friends at the train station had made him change his mind and stay. Misato had understood he'd been unwilling to leave behind the closest thing to a home and family he'd had in ten years.

"When I was up in the hills, I sat on the edge of a cliff and thought about jumping."

Misato blanched in shock. Kaji stiffened beside her. Asuka flinched, and squeezed his shoulder tighter. It wasn't news to her. They'd shared such dark memories in whispered confidences in bed at night over the last year. But she still hated hearing how empty Shinji had been before they'd met.

"The only thing that stopped me was that I didn't want to inconvenience you with my death. At the train station, I stayed for you. For offering me a home. For my friends. I hated myself. I didn't think I deserved to live in this world. But you told me to. Other people needed me to. So I did it because I had to. It was an obligation." He looked up at Asuka and smiled wearily. He squeezed her hand and returned his gaze to Misato. "Then I met Asuka. We may not have gotten along at first, but no one could deny how powerful we were together in a fight."

Asuka snorted lightly. "Yeah, once we harnessed the awesome power of interpretive dance," she snarked. "And I got you to notice I kinda thought you were cute."

Shinji just smiled a little more. "So now I fight because Asuka needs me. Loves me. I choose to fight beside her because I love her back. I still hate having to be an Eva Pilot. But as long as she needs me, I will never stop fighting to be the best Pilot I can. I don't do it anymore because I have to. I do it because this is what the one I love needs me to do. I will fight every battle she does, and take any risk. We all would."

He nodded pointedly at Kaworu and Rei. "Can you offer them any less? SEELE knows Kaworu is rebelling against them. They're trying to shoot him to set him off. Because he won't do it voluntarily anymore. Because he loves us. I'll take any risk for Asuka. He'd take any risk for Rei. I bet you and Kaji-san would do the same for each other. Kaworu's as human as we are. He was ready to let you shoot him last night. If it comes to it, all of us have promised we'll stop him. But as long as there's a chance, I will take any risk for someone who loves me."

Once again Shinji graces us with his eloquence in matters of the heart.

How did this even happen?

Clone: "you cannot defeat me; I know all of your moves."

Rei: <headbutts her> "How about that, you stupid doll?"

Rei: "Yes but you do not know any of Asuka's moves"

And now we move into the endgame (a phrase I can no longer use without thinking of certain overly popular films). You've got me enthralled with all the possibilities and I just hope our heroes don't lose too much on the path to victory.

I mean, depending on who you ask, these two things weren't his intention. Still, fair point overall.

Oh... Oh no. I've figured it out. I've realized why Stryp was saying that Hangover wouldn't be the canon ending.

Because Kaworu's going to get two Reis to love out of this.

Asuka: "Gee Kaworu! How come Lilith lets you have two Reis?"
K: "Asuka, you say that as if it's a good thing."

A: "...it isn't?"

K: "One of them is literally--" *ducks expertly timed flying Rei* "--trying to kill me as we speak."

A: "Meh. That's just an advanced form of tsundere. She'll come around eventually."

Kaworu: "You are not Rei, even if you have her face. I shall have to correct that."
"Rei IV, sir, she didn't care much about the safety of the world at first. She actually tried to grab an anti-AT Field bullet gun and tried to kill us all. But I.... corrected her, sir. And when Gendô Ikari tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I.... corrected him."

@Ranma-sensei, I am interested to see what you think about the latest update.

Misato will have to choose between not having her confidence boost anymore and letting Gendo proceed with his endgame.

Here is a small omake of them needing to get to terminal dogma in a hurry.

They found Ritsuko and asked if there is a short cut to Terminal Dogma. She guided them to a floor under Gendo's office and stopped in front of two levers. Ritsuko then said "Pull the lever Maya". She does so and a trap door opens bellow them and they plummet down to their destination with the doctor screaming "Wrong Lever"! Fortunately Rei and Kaworu used their powers to slow their fall so that they don't get injured. Shinji then asked "Why do we even have that lever"?

Asuka: Misato, in this moment, I have never felt closer to you.
Misato: I know, right? I actually feel like your real, horribly irresponsible, mother!
Asuka: Yeah! Give me some really inappropriate advice on men!
Misato: Okay... If you like a man, get a baby in ya, that way you can both keep him and get child support from the government!
Asuka: That was awful!
*Cackling ensues.*
