So we've got a Knife of Longinus, a Spear of Longinus (that could potentially be used as a fork), now all we need is a Spoon of Longinus, a Spork of Longinus, an Extendable Fork of Longinus, a Chef's Knife of Longinus, a Straw of Longinus and most of all...

Chopsticks of Longinus.
You know, after Gendo and SEELE is dealt with, the kids should have those patented and produced.

So talking about the Netflix Dub a bit remember the scene in The End of Evangelion in where Shinji begs to Asuka in instrumentality?

The left is the 90's dub, the right is the original and the right paints Shinji in an entirely different light.
What stands out to me, at least my own reaction to this is that if this was indeed the efforts of someone on staff to push Asuka/Shinji be more textual then it kinda does the opposite to me. Shinji assaulting Asuka is obviously awful no matter the reason or rational but I must admit I think the idea of him doing so out of a feeling of overwhelming desperation at everyone in his life leaving him (Kensuke, HIkari moved away, Touji is badly injured, Misato and Ritsuko have gone cold and in the case of Akagi seemingly nuts. Rei has turned into some unfeeling alien and finally Kaworu someone Shinji had a deep emotional connection with, betrayed him and Shinji was forced to kill him.) I find that a lot more empathetic and understandable then Shinji freaking out because Asuka personally is rejecting his romantic advances.

On one hand this is kinda disappointing because I do like the Asuka/Shinji dynamic but on the other...

Ignoring any possible authorial intention the scene still works, alebit in a different way. It makes Shinji look a lot worse as a person but that does not necessarily mean its a worse scene. leaning into the idea that Shinji has a dark side born out of his frustration and lack of affection is a valid choice. And on a personal note it does thoroughly cement and support what I see as a thematic parallel between Gendo and Shinji.

By supposedly making this more strictly literal, they badly introduced connotations in English that really mess up the pain and feeling of the original. Shinji reaching out to her in desperation and hope of an emotional connection is far more powerful than 'if you were my girlfriend, things would be ok'.

Thoughts?

It's been a little over a year since the day Shinji arrived to fight Sachiel. Asuka showed up about 3-4 months later, and it's around 9 months since they got together.

Somewhere, Shinji suddenly got heart palpitations. "...just imagining things."

/Meanwhile/

"Congratulations. It's a girl," said Kaworu with a smile.

"...HOW?" demanded Asuka, looking at the tiny infant bundled up in her arms. Said infant had been dropped off by a stork.

A stork bearing a Lilithian mask of all things.

"Well, it has been nine months..." wistfully said Rei.

Asuka twitched. "That's not how ANY of this works."

"It does now."

"Why???"

"Because I said so," reiterated Rei, her eyes suddenly sparkling at the sight of the child in Asuka's arms. "The BABIES must flow."

...why does going back into a coma sound really good right about now? pondered Shinji.

You beat me to it, blast you!

Eh, might be me having my shipping glasses on, but I always took it as a "romantic" declaration ("I want to stay with you") - but still said out of desperation, thus Asuka rightfully calling him a liar, knowing* that he just doesn't have anyone else to turn to (*be it due to good intuition, Instrumentallity or especially if she's just the "Asuka in Shinji's mind" rather than the real one). Whether or not he actually feels that way (that much is admittedly debatable, though I guess my opinion is quite obvious), at that moment, he's just saying something "nice" to appease her for purely egoistical reasons.
So the new take is certainly more on the nose, but in the end doesn't really seem all that different to me (unless the scene is even more jumbled otherwise, don't have Netflix). :/

That's my main issue with anime in general ! Here in France, we just cannot take any translation for granted. We have to learn to accept all their flaws if we want to watch a dubbed version, and also accept that the subtitles might not be accurate either.

The most obvious is Fist of the North Star, in which the voice actors just said whatever came to their minds (bad puns andstupid things) because they deemed the show too violent, and they didn't accept to continue dubbing it if they had to do it seriously.

Long story short, the only solution would be to learn Japanese.

The world shook. "What on Earth was that, Kaworu?"

He looked up from his newspaper. "Huh. I believe there was a retcon somewhere. It shouldn't be too much of an issue, at least." Returning to the paper. "Correcting a typo, perhaps."

Exactly 6 seconds later, the world around them (excluding the furniture they were lounging on, conveniently enough) became that of post-Third Impact, in a real life Gilligan Cut. The headline on Kaworu's newspaper changed to "WOLRD ENDS".

Rei, Shinji and Asuka all gave Kaworu unamused stares, who simply put up his hands in surrender, the newspaper dropping to the floor and soaking in LCL. "Perhaps the retcon was more significant than I thought."

"Make with the finger snapping, trout." Asuka incessantly snapped her own fingers.

Rolling of the eyes and a snap of his fingers. "Wasn't even my fault this time aro-

Are we sure Tabris isn't secretly a Time Lord? :V

/or a member of the Continuum
//a la Q of Star Trek

It'd be closer to Q, since a Time Lord would actually have to go do the work himself instead of handwaving/finger snapping.

That would make for a very different show. Or fic, for that matter.

Rei stared intently at the flopping rainbow trout on the floor. "...I was not being literal."

The fish actually sat up and stared indignantly at her. "Well, you kept calling me Fish. What else am I supposed to do??"

/Meanwhile, in Canon/

The video message was quite condemning.

"So you see, you lot already failed the trial for humanity before I ever showed up, so I'm just going to take these youngsters on a road trip to pass the time until you all inevitably muck it up." The silver-colored boy with red eyes spoke nonchalantly and with gleeful arrogance; in the background, all of the Eva Pilot Corps, plus Misato, Ritsuko, Kaji, Maya, Hyuga, and Aoba were gawking at the sight of Pen-Pen wrestling with a horde of Tribbles. "Because seriously, there's enough issues with this crew for me to make it big as a therapist! And coming from me...well, that says plenty." Tabris waved jovially at the camera. "Oh. And Rokubungi? Tell that decrepit cyborg primitive that Q was not impressed. Ta-ta!" With a snap of his fingers, the footage ended.

And then the computer it was playing on exploded into confetti.

Fuyutsuki's response was honestly sufficient in its pithiness. "...well, then."

"...indeed," quietly muttered Gendo, wondering if he could at least get Keel to have a heart attack before everything went to hell around them.
