A: "...hang on a minute, where the hell does the seven eyes come from then? I thought it came from said mask."
Lilith probably had the mask all along. The FAR sent out seven Moons, so each eye is one of them. SEELE taking their iconography from the god they seek to emulate just makes too much sense. Too bad we only ever see Adam in embryo and giant of light mode.

"...oh you are fucking kidding me."

Shub-Niggurath: [Laughing uncontrolably] "Omigoshthelookonhisface!"

Mi: "Is your cats smart enough to read the finances?"
Ri: "...Why would Pen-Pen even be interested in stocks anyway? He's a bird, he can't hold stocks!"

"So what? On the Russian base two of their pilots are polar bears."

Ah, more Rebuild LDC! Always a great read while waiting for A&T updates :)

"We may not have a degree in Metaphysical Biology, but we know innately about the mechanics of the soul, due to our nature." Kaworu gave his two cents. "A wandering soul, a soul with no AT-Field, can be for however long their constitution dictates, but eventually they are called to rebirth. It's one of the many natural process of this world, such as the water cycle or the Lunar phases."

"Which is how life goes on, despite death." Ritsuko recalled her education. "It still doesn't explain how he found a way into Unit-01 though. And in this supposedly weakened state."

"I know better than anyone how the wandering soul works." Spoke Rei. "A core can capture a soul. We know this empirically. A core could store multiple souls. We also know this empirically. You have devices to find and salvage wandering souls. And I know that the wandering soul has some autonomy. It tries to seek out somewhere, something, seemingly significant to it. Eventually it would be drawn to rebirth, one way or another. Either by finding a new shell, as I did, or a new life."

"Can they resist that process?"

"It weakens the constitution, but yes, they could resist. It's ultimately a futile endeavour however; eventually they will become so weak that they cannot resist rebirth. I believe his soul was resistive, unaccepting of his death. Hence his weaker light."

Ritsuko snuffed out the cigarette and rummaged through a cupboard. "...can you see them? Wanderers, I mean?" She bought out a machine, appearing like a waist worn oscilloscope attached via a thick cable to a PDA with wide antenna. "You already know of the Recovery Device. It's what we used when we salvaged your soul."

"I can sense them. If I concentrate, I can visualise them." She closed her eyes. There weren't any wandering souls in the vicinity of the Geofront, only the light of others. Ritsuko's machine would've backed this fact up, had it been powered.

"Seeing the light of living beings is trivial for me, as they have the AT-Field. Wandering souls don't have this. Instead of appearing normally to me, they appear to me like a ball of iridescent light, floating around seemingly aimlessly. I'd liken it to a firefly."

Ah, interesting idea! Pretty neat to come up wi-

"...That sounds like something in a book I've read. She see pyreflies."

"...pyreflies?"

She nodded her bandaged head. "Sparkling light that represents life energy. In this story, when someone dies, they simply don't just do whatever the hell the soul does in our world. Their spirit has to be guided to its final rest, especially if they don't want to go. You can tell they pretty much mixed Met Bio and folklore, least what I know of the two."

-aaaah, it's a book reference. Still, neat, and fits with what we know about soul rebirth and the Chamber of Guf in canon. What book is that from?

Re: "Your thinking is linear, Shinji and Asuka. We don't know if this is from the same Earth as the Laserdiscs."
Kaw: "And considering the differences between the two so far.
A: "...oh shit, you're right. This could've come from another world than the Laserdiscs."

Ooooor, though Asuka would find it hard to believe, maybe somehow the series was actually popular and got a reboot? :p

Maya became a strawberry.

Proceeding to read the rest of this with Maya as a one-inch talking berry. :V

Re: "Though having someone of the opposite sex is quite a nice thing, I'd think."
Kaw: "Ritsuko and Ibuki are doing quite alright for themselves, don't you think?"

Heh. I was thinking the same sort of thing just before reading Kaworu's line.

He was left alone, the morning sun shining down on a framed photograph. A girl, wearing glasses, in a pink plugsuit. The last light in his world, snuffed out over a year ago.

Nooo Mari why ;-; you may not have had much backstory but I don't want to hear you got killed offscreen

The pyrefly drifted into his hand and rested. He could feel a warmth as it made its presence known. Emotion flooded in, emotion that was not his own.

"...Ramiel."

query pensive kin brother Tabris "b-brother. i am ashamed y-you had to f-f-f-find me in such a st-state."

Uh oh. Incoming feels.

"If it's any consolation, you were the second most powerful of the Angels. It took the whole capabilities of our nation to bring you low."

Was Ramiel or Armisael stronger? Ramiel's beam was certainly powerful, but Armisael was more haxx on top of being pretty strong...

Kaworu's anguish could be heard from a mile away.

I'm too feelsed by that line to make an acoustics/AT field joke ;-;

Ri: "Good, cause it's not changing. Not over my dead body. I'm far too used to it, it'll interrupt our workflow."
Mi: "Every change to the systems I propose breaks your workflow." She deadpanned.

So, Mari's dead in LD!Eva. I guess the question is whether she was in Unit 04 or not.
I think they specifically mentioned her in the last LDC, with Rits and Maya getting caught up. She was assigned to NERV Bethany like in Rebuild 2.0, but happened to be on a vacation in Vegas when they were preparing Unit 04 for its activation and got called in for it.

Speaking of Mari, I'm going to call it now: Asuka is going to start rooting for Zeruel when she gets shown up with her own Eva.

Wasn't the Nevada NERV base sucked into a sea of Dirac along with Unit-04, rather than blown up per se?

Evangelion life support seems to be power-dependent, based on what happened with Leliel.

Unit-04 was supposed to have the restored S2 engine... and at the least, it was functional enough to produce a Dirac big enough to swallow everything within 89 km.

If it's still functional... then the Eva might have life support for an effectively unlimited duration. And I'm guessing that LCL is digestible, given what it's based on, so even starvation might not be certain.

Mari might not actually be dead here. Then again, if that's the case, she's been trapped in a Dirac Sea inside her entry plug for half a year or more :o (Big Hero 6 suddenly comes to mind...)

Then again, if that were the case, the ones most likely to recover her would be SEELE. Probably to be nursed back to health and fed a pack of lies about what's happened on Earth, in order to have her serve as SEELE's guard dog on Mars. Yikes.

Kaw: "I have been denied critical, need to know information!"
Ri: "... what?"
Kaw: *grmbl* "Haven't had pizza since Germany."

Now picturing Kaworu with a big Cheese-Kun plushie.

(And was Kaworu just channeling Burt Gummer of all people?)

Holy shit, Scottish!Asuka and Lovecraft/Eva sclice-of-life in the same week!

And that too, one of my favourite Eva abridged series (though I think LittleKuriboh's Card Games For Charity edges out as my most favourite (probably should've referenced it then, oops). Can't get much better than Mr Burns!Gendo :V)

Third Impact.

"Well shit."

:thonk: That's definitely plausible, though considering it was the S2 engine which caused the Nevada Incident in the first place, odds are it's not operating correctly to provide such power. Not like she'd have that much sanity left after spending that much time in the entry plug, though who knows. Maybe whoever was the resident soul bought her into the core right before the life support gave out, and now they're in some suspended animation, lost forever drifting endlessly in the Dirac Sea. Mari in a Mark.x Unit is tempting though...

Or who knows, maybe NERV-Nevada was completely self sufficient, and everything within an 89km radius is just plonked somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Or they could've been placed onto another Earth.

Or they could just all be dead.

It seemed to be providing something, at least. (Just had this odd notion that they just had the S2 connected backwards, so the polarity was inverted, along with the Unit's AT-field when Mari tried to extend it. It's not like a red featureless crystal has the positive and negative leads labeled, after all.)

That's what had me reminded of Big Hero 6 -- pilot lost in dimensional void, but in suspended animation until rescued. (Then again, as mentioned, this could be a/the source for her slightly demented personality.)

Somewhere in the Multiverse, the TARDIS shook as if a great weight had been dropped on the floor somewhere. The Doctor looked up from his control panel.

"What now?"

Or they could've been placed onto another Earth.

Another odd notion: that's where the Mari of the Rebuild timeline comes from, and why she seems to know too much -- she's been through some of this before!

Or they could just all be dead.

Well, yes, that too. I figured it was most likely that the NERV personnel, at least, were killed when the base got sucked in. Mari at least has a chance, though, IMHO.

"We have therefore come to the conclusion that the Nevada incident; which resulted in tens of thousands civilian and military personnel MIA, presumed dead, in addition to the loss of billions of dollars of infrastructure within an 55 mile radius, was the result of the incorrect installation of an S2 engine. Specifically, the S2 engine was installed backwards into Evangelion Unit-04. When the pilot Mari Makinami attempted to deploy the AT-Field, this resulted in a resonance cascade; an infinite positive feedback loop of energy, resulting in the opening of a Dirac Sea. Consequently, the Dirac Sea consumed Unit-04 and its pilot, the entirety of NERV-Nevada, two nearby towns, a military base, and 36 McDonald's franchises."

President Colbert looked over the report. "So they installed what amounts to a battery backwards, which resulted in such a cataclysmic event."

"When you put it that way, sir, it sounds stupid."

"It is! Why are we funding NERV again?"

"Because they bring trillions of dollars into our economy, giving hundreds of thousands of people jobs either directly or by proxy, and practically turned Massachusetts into the new Silicon Valley?"

"...touché."

It could certainly explain her insanity; stuck in a world that's similar to your own world but not, probably not gonna get back. Of course you'd go insane.

If her sync rate is high enough, conversation with the resident soul might help keep her sane.

Maybe central Germany in the 1630s?

It's not a question of 'smart enough' if your mouth sometimes runs without consulting your brain. The downside of being a fast talker comes if you talk faster than your brain does its thought processes, and speaking more slowly is a hard-learned and mostly conscious skill (at least for me, so maybe I am not smart enough).

I sometimes see the train wreck coming while my mouth is busy getting me into a jam.

Well, I can sympathize, but let's face it, it should be obvious I spend a LOT of time considering my words. I tend to only talk first and think later when I am tired or frustrated. And then it's usually a matter of not choosing the best word for the intent. I sometimes say I "ran out of vocabulary" because I just can't remember the exact word I want to say and can't finish the sentence until I do.

On the other hand, that is a LOT of fun to watch in fiction, when it's happening to someone else. :D
