The position lends itself to a lot of jokes, though.

If I may be permitted quote that great British scholar Garnt Maneetapho:

"Since the beginning of mankind we have strived to innovate. From the first tools that separated us from the animals to technology that allowed us to defy god we always pushed forward.
We built faster, we built bigger, we built smarter, conquered our know world, explored our deepest oceans, shot for the stars.
Our limits were only those in our imaginations as we continued to push what we thought would never be possible.
Science fiction became science fact - nothing was impossible if we could dream it and we did.

Which is why today I am proud to present the crowning achievement our species has met thus far.

We at THOTgineering are proud to present: Butt Control,
A revolutionary control system where you can pilot a mech by grabbing a girl's... butt... (*wheezing laughter*)"

In fact, given the circumstance they're likely to conclude this IS another universe's version of themselves. Although they may discard that idea after trying to figure out who the rest of the cast is supposed to be. (And they've got PMMM as an example of some of them being lifted out and put in another show)

They do have PMMM, but that's more two people they know being directly lifted from their world and implanted into the PMMM world (as far as they know, they probably don't know if their personalities are the same). With Franxx, other than analogous characters, none of them are in that world. They'd probably agree it's an alternate universe, just a universe where either they don't exist, or they exist in a form so radically different that you have to treat them as separate entities.

We must also consider that the Eva pilots were born between 2001 and 2006 (most of the children and children candidates in Eva were born 2001, Hikari was born 2002, Rei was 2004-2006, 2004 since thats Yui went into Unit-01, and 2006 because Rei was biologically 4 years old in 2010, of course Gendo probably sped up her growth considering she was biologically 14 in 2015). The last solid year we get in Franxx continuity is 2042. The Eva characters would've most likely been using the immortality serum APE cooked up at this point.

Of course, time is a fickle mistress. It's entirely possible that fate decreed them to be "born" in the Franxx universe at whatever the hell the timeline was at that stage. And they would definitely have been different characters; different upbringing, different friend group, etc etc. Who knows, maybe:
Shinji becomes a charismatic leader figure who forms a close bond with his squad by naming all of them,
Asuka becomes a dinogirl with pink hair, searching for the one person in her life who made her happy, going through, at best, a few months of happiness with friends before being ripped away from it all and not even being able to hold her darling before dying in vain with him (yes I'm still upset :V),
and Rei becomes a protective leader figure with a crush on Shinji.

Although I'd liken Asuka to Miku first instead of Zero Two.

Here's what I'd think would happen if they were to watch Franxx (no guarantees of a Chronicles in the Franxx though):
  • Immediate identification of it being at best an alternate universe ("Well, if we thought the non-Laserdisc universe and the Madoka universe was different, this world isn't like our world at all! Not even on the surface!")
  • Discussion aimed at the Slice of Life aspects of the show ("I doubt these kids have gone through any of the shit we had to go through.")
  • Discussion at the perversion ("Y'know, I can see how someone like Dr Franxx would make a mecha with such a perverse piloting system.")
  • Discussion about the mecha they use ("Those mecha designs look excessively moe. You wouldn't induce fear into your enemy at all when the face of your mecha is akin to someone out of Sailor Moon. Although I do admit they look quite cool. Even with the perverted piloting system, but at least that could be justified.")
  • Eventual realisation that Zero Two and Hiro have actually been through a lot of shit, especially Zero Two. ("...holy shit, I actually feel really bad for her now. No wonder she's obsessed with him.")
  • Probably celebrating the times where Zero Two and Hiro blow shit up. ("Go Dinogirl!")
  • The hating of the guts of various characters, temporary or not (9's and 9'a, APE, etc.) ("YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! CAN'T THEY HAVE ONE MOMENT OF HAPPINESS FOR ONCE?")
  • Increasing confusion at the tumbleweed of a plot going into overdrive in later episodes. ("Who the fuck is VIRM? And why have we only found out about them in Episode 21 out of 24?")
  • And I imagine the finale would be quite mixed, considering how the Franxx fandom reacted to it. ("...damn. those two got completely fucked in that world." "fate really had it out for them. at least they were together in the end." "Everyone else got a happy ending where they literally all fucked, and the main protagonists get stuck in space for years, not even being able to hold one another, and then they fucking die? And they didn't even completely defeat VIRM? The writer of this must hate them more than Anno hates us!" etc etc etc...)

It's finally happening.

...2 or so years from now :V

Vandread is better than FranXX. Better plot, better characters and better treatment of LGBT people. Of course I'm talking about the anime, the comic can go fuck itself.

That and Vandread is a harem romcom with an actual conclusion. Also note, everytime you guys would go "oh darling" in various threads, all I heard was "Mister Alien"

I see. But what about the cockpit design, though, since we're talking about it?

Which cockpit? There are 4 Vandreads and each has it's own cockpit: Dita's Vandread has a Cockpit where Dita sits in Hibiki's lap while their hand are entwined on the controls, Meia's Vandread has Hibiki sit in front of Meia in a pegging position, Jura's Vandread has this weird command ring with with two mobile chairs around it and as far as I can tell isn't sexual and instead might be a reference to a futuristic baby changing table in a hospital, Pyoro's Vandread is a fusion of the other three and has Dita and Hibiki share a modified version of Dita's Vandread cockpit that acts as a command bridge now and Meia and Jura are the bridge bunnies while Pyoro is the equivalent of a Core (thought the mechanics of that are never fully explored in the anime and Pyoro isn't a character in the comics).

My favorite interpretation was that the seating arrangements reflected his relationship with each girl.

...it would be out by now, right? Anime night in Mitakihara!

edit: I somehow mixed up this tab with the tab for PMAS; This is why you don't post at 5 in the morning people!

Man, now I'm thinking of there being a spinoff of A&T focused on the gang watching and reacting to various films and shows from our world. Like, the pilots & co. watching through Pacific Rim or Halo Legends... as well as less-serious things *image of Asuka & Shinji unsure whether to be disturbed or laughing*

I can see why you didn't like the comics.

It's not Vandread Pyoro! It's the Super Vandread! Honestly, that glorified vacuum cleaner's just a connecting component to bridge the other Vandreads together and he acts like he's the star. I haven't forgotten how he tried to get the baby named after himself.

I didn't call it Vandread Pyoro I called it Pyoro's Vandread because having to plug in the childish terminal for the Paxis Pragma is a requirement for making that Vandread. Also the comics missing a goofy terminal for the soul of the magical crystal that created the Vandreads isn't why I hate the comics. It's because in the comics Buzam A. Calessa is a villain and a cis woman instead of the more complex hero trans woman she is in the anime.

I unspoilered the points that weren't actually spoilers, since the discussion of FranXX is fairly open for the moment.

Although I'd liken Asuka to Miku first instead of Zero Two.

Maybe, but Miku is more like a traditional Tsundere. Sexually immature, short tempered, and stubborn. Zorome might be a bit more like Asuka, or the two of them together as Argentea, but they lack either the tragic backstory or the mental trauma that drives them. They might be like Asuka in that they think they're better than they are until they gain the experience to back it up. And once they do, they ARE as good as they think... (And note I'm in the camp that thinks Asuka was always that good, she just got a late start)

I find it hilarious, though, that the Tsundere couple are the only ones who have no rivalries. (No one else really WANTS them :D) Everyone else is All Love Is Unrequited. (Even Hiro and Zero Two, prior to the big revelation)

"Those mecha designs look excessively moe. You wouldn't induce fear into your enemy at all when the face of your mecha is akin to someone out of Sailor Moon. Although I do admit they look quite cool. Even with the perverted piloting system, but at least that could be justified."

Before I watched the show, I described it as Neon Genesis Evangelion meets FLCL. Now I describe it as Neon Genesis Evangelion meets Sailor Moon. The five girls and their mechs are FAR more important to the plot than I expected (they are featured, alone without any of the guys, in every ending credits) and the emphasis on romance and character development is much more like Sailor Moon as well. NGE would NEVER let these relationships work out so well.

The hating of the guts of various characters, temporary or not (9's and 9'a, APE, etc.) ("YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! CAN'T THEY HAVE ONE MOMENT OF HAPPINESS FOR ONCE?")

I would like to see where they each come down on the base-breaking catfight that leads to the tragedy in Episode 14. Ironically, I can see Rei seeing Zero Two's point of view, (as the alien hybrid and emotional outcast) while Asuka might lean more towards Ichigo's position. (Overly devoted to her love and looking out for her squad) It would be kind of cute to see them switch sides and get into a fight over it.

And Shinji would naturally comment "That's what you get for not TALKING to either of the two of them." :D

Increasing confusion at the tumbleweed of a plot going into overdrive in later episodes. ("Who the fuck is VIRM? And why have we only found out about them in Episode 21 out of 24?")

Seriously, Season 1 should have ended with the revelation of VIRM and the last 4 episodes should have been a whole new season. I remember how Babylon 5 was forced to do the same thing, though, when they though they were going to be canceled before the fifth season.

And I imagine the finale would be quite mixed, considering how the Franxx fandom reacted to it. ("...damn. those two got completely fucked in that world." "fate really had it out for them. at least they were together in the end." "Everyone else got a happy ending where they literally all fucked, and the main protagonists get stuck in space for years, not even being able to hold one another, and then they fucking die? And they didn't even completely defeat VIRM? The writer of this must hate them more than Anno hates us!" etc etc etc...)

And who builds a star gate, and then sets the exit point TWO YEARS before the destination? Even if it was a one-way trip, couldn't they have just jumped right there? Then they could take two years to figure out how to get them BACK. :D

I'm only on Episode 17 currently, but I'm not looking forward to the ending. I was thinking based on the theme song that it would have to be Zero Two that comes close to death this time (the first half of the show was about whether or not Hiro would die) but Hiro would call her back in the end. That's the way the show should have ended. But I think that's where she decides to leave her body, and take the battle out into space. And the second intro does shows her disappearing, and then Hiro...

At least the fans are coming up with a lot of alternate endings. I think I have two I could write myself, one canon, the other a divergence. On the canon ending, one thing I'd note is that we know they have cryogenic technology. If the squad wanted to reunite with the reincarnated leads, they could. The question would be how old they would be, and who would decide to have Babies Ever After and who would decide to return to piloting. The biggest issue I had with the ending is that the Klaxosaur Princess explicitly entrusted Hiro and Zero Two with the protection of the human race. Their deaths, and the abandoning of the FranXX to a museum means Earth is defenseless should the VIRM decide to seek revenge. So both stories would be able changing that.

And it's good to see Rebuild 4.0, or 3.0+1.0 as it were. It would have to be something completely new, although I like the speculation that it restarts in some way. At least progress is once again being made, though.

Personally, I'm hoping that 3.33 turns out to have been a dream or something. That could be why they're calling the next one 3.0+1.0 instead of just straight out calling it 4.0

I read on other forums and imageboards that they may not be calling it 4.0 because of the superstition that 4 is death. Based on that superstition, if they did call it 4.0, then that would imply the world ends in some fashion or something like that, so 3.0+1.0 not only avoids said superstition, it links back to the first Rebuild as you suggested.

Though I doubt Khara will simply outright disregard 3.33 like that. Something like that would most likely be considered a copout and throw even more fuel on the perpetual garbage fire that resulted after 3.33 :V

Anno saw so many people doing Peggy Sue stories he decided to do it himself?

Calling it now, he adapts Re-Take to the big screen :V

Would it still be Eva if Shinji didn't have to live with the consequences of his actions, or lack thereof?

Of course it wouldn't, which is another reason why Khara won't simply disregard 3.33. He almost ended the world trying to save Rei, which resulted in the world of 3.33. Hell, the entirety of that film was him trying to deal with the consequences of what he did, and trying to fix things resulting in even more consequences, which he will now have to deal with in 3.0+1.0.
