There were good things about ND, for me it was the traveling throughout the multiverse arc.Because of that arc, I think I'm going to write a fic where A&T Shinji, Asuka, and Rei switches places with the Taking Sights versions of them for a few days. A&T Gendo (and everyone else) is going to be very surprised to learn that TK Gendo shaved his beard. :D

Diary Of A Madman, entry#WAUGHWHY

I've survived the Great Cyclic Discussion of the early 800-850s, stopped only by the Arael update. I've survived another shipping war or five. I thought nothing could be more horrifying than SHEIBU IMPAKUTOO.

Dear effing Lord how wrong I was..

Oh god...along with that, I presume you have born witness to my various rants and raves of which I am not very proud? This diary is a trip down memory lane for me...

And to think the fic had already been ongoing for like a year and a half when I joined this merry band of nutters, back in the 200s or something.

Man, what a blast.

That is correct. I kind of started skimming as the Cyclic Discussion went on.
I feel ya, though. Memory Lane isn't a nice place, yet we seem to spend a lot of time there anyway.

Don't you bring that evil back!

*waggles eyebrows, just twice*

Hey, it could have been worse. I coulda brought back the picture of NGE characters as PMMM cast.

Okay, to get us as far away from this soul destroying shit as possible, I must show you all something.

During one of my routine trollings (ahem) patrols of /r/evangelion, I came across a thread called "recommended fanfics" or something along those lines. Within it, I found someone giving recommendations for Second Try and Advice and Trust. This is what they got back...

"The Second Try / Advice and Trust are great for people who like reading stories about characters-in-name-only."

Upon being queried as to why he thought that way, and whether or not he understood the concept of "character development", our detracting poster...well...

"Completely changing how a character acts and character development aren't the same thing. Genocide develops the characters... fics like 2nd Try and A&T offer immediate gratification with shallow impersonations of the characters. Just have Asuka shout "baka" every now and then, and have Shinji act a little timid so people will believe you've nailed all there is to their personalities."

Your thoughts, people?

They're entitled to their opinions. Just as we are entitled to ignore them.

Isn't 2nd Try the one where Shinji and Asuka have been living for ten years in the post-instrumentality world before getting sent back? I admit I did kind of skim the chapters chronicling their lives in the future, but I recall a fair amount of development there.

It's one of the better-moderated subreddits out there (I know, low bar) but civility towards people with different ideas of what constitutes good fanfic is rather thin on the ground. The less said about the response when I posted a link to an illustration from The Second Try the better...

They are free to be as wrong as they want. I always felt Shinji was developing pretty well in the show, around the time Asuka showed up. If he continued to grow in that way, the show could have turned out very differently.

Shinji could have easily developed into the version of him in A&T.

Sad but true. The fact that Advice and Trust started as a one-shot works to its detriment, since it means a lot of character changes take place in a very short amount of time. In addition @Strypgia has been letting jokes define his character development, which means it feels less than organic in places. It's the main reason I never quite got past skimming it.

Sorry.:(

The Second Try is mostly fine. I question its grasp of Rei's character, but it's not really about her.

Considering that their personalities follow from canon beyond poster's oversimplification, my thought is: the comment is not worth anyone's time.
