For the record, I take no issue with Scarlett Johannsen.

However casting her as the Major for Ghost In the Shell, is a slap in the face to every actress of Asian decent.

Would that really ruffle feathers? Having a Korean play a Japanese?

I'm not trying to dismiss anything. My first thought when I read what @WC-83 wrote was, "Nobody got bent out of shape when an Englishman played a Frenchman on STNG," but that's almost a world away with a totally different set of historical baggage.

That is true, but I'll be damned if I let racism get in the way of making the NGE movie. Besides, I'd cast actors of Japanese decent first, but you have to prepare for shortages of actors (particularly good ones) if it's a possibility. I actually considered looking for Vietnamese actors if there is a shortage first, but I'm not sure.

Also, while the Japanese appreciate putting in the effort of casting actual Japanese people(Letters from Iwo Jima), as GtS shows they don't care too much as long as the story's good. (Funny how no one rioted when the FMA movie race lifted their characters).

As for technology after the Angel War, I imagine people will have a better understanding of the field of psychotherapy.

Ooh! I've been thinking about doing that. WHT few formats do you use? I was worried that anything with too much Metadata would be trouble with git...

So, originally I wrote stories in LaTeX and just used the perl script to produce bbcode, markdown, and html. I still use basically LaTeX syntax, but I haven't bothered with creating a master LaTeX document in a while (making a good pdf for people has too many knobs that aren't worth tweaking and tuning).

Because the source is in LaTeX, the files themselves are not meaningfully different from plain text as far as git is concerned. The Second Coming has a repository on gitlab.com, and the readme should explain a little bit about how it works in practice to generate output files.

1. She still says she doesn't bleed/menstruate (and that's still Shinji's hallucination, which I don't recall seeing. Was it before he found out she was a clone?)
That's the common interpretation, and the one I subscribe to as well. But Rei never actually makes clear that her reference to "a woman who never bleeds" is about herself (or even that it's supposed to be taken literally), so there's a lot of room for fanfic authors to wiggle around.

Now that I think about it, it really is quite strange for a being generated from a Seed of Life (even if only partially) to be sterile. Perhaps the hormonal contraceptives in Rei's pharmaceutical cocktail were partly intended as a safeguard against attempts by Lilith to... correct that error? And now that she's off of those drugs, what might the implications be?

(Random Thoughts: Making a live-action Neon Genesis movie (for American audiences mind, that's the shit that makes money) seems perfectly possible if difficult.
Possible? Sure.

Likely in the current climate? Um... I'm getting visions of "New Beginnings: Eve", the story of Steve Carry, chosen by his father Ken Rock, the head of NERVE, to fight the Devils for the fate of humanity using the ultimate weapon: the EVE suits of powered armor. Join him as he fights alongside his two sidekicks Raye Nommie and Asuka Shiki (the only Asian character in the entire cast) as they kick the tails of the legions of Hell, pursue wacky antarctic hijinks with their penguin friend, and learn the true meaning of family drama. Coming to a theater near you, rated PG-13.

I must ask, what is the purpose the derail ban? On the RWBY Wiki we have a reply limit of 500 comments, after which posting is disabled and a new thread is typically created. Here, we're at 1010 pages. So why is derailing discouraged? (In my defense, my conversation was about a film adaptation of NGE, please don't ban me I literally joined yesterday).

@Millenium: What do you think I'm working for 4Kids? It'll be the same, with some practical changes (no gratuitous nude scenes that don't serve the plot. Sorry weebs). I imagine the 1st, 2nd, and End movies will be PG, PG-13, and R respectively.

I'm getting flashbacks of the Doom movie. The one with no actual demons (I think, it went with Doom 3's "so dark you can't see shit" method of lighting) and a mutant/zombie Dwayne Johnson.

Ehh, the script is not something I'd consider maintainable or in good coding style. I'd really rather switch to something that takes care of these details for me. Markdown is close, but I find the lack of support for comments (that don't get translated into html comments, for instance; just for personal reference) to be a no-go. All the alternative flavors of Markdown have obnoxious syntax for comments, if at all.

You might find AsciiDoc (the format) and AsciiDoctor (the tooling) to your liking (or possibly use pandoc as the tooling, if you already have Haskell stuff up and running). It's a considerably more powerful format than Markdown, supports comments natively, has a fully-specified syntax, and has an actual data model (DocBook) with well-defined transformations to other formats (including LaTeX, PDF, EPUB, HTML, etc).

It's also still effectively plain text, like Markdown.

So why is derailing discouraged?
You probably weren't here for it, but iirc one time a derail went on for like 15 pages and everyone got infracted. I don't remember it all that well, other veterans could tell you more. it was back in like the 600s.

@Millenium: I have a feeling a good reputation as a director and/or producer would be in order for an NGE movie. A greener person would get his ass handed to him by corporate.

I guess that's where the Girls und Panzer movie would come in XD. I'd rather make nonsensical changes for that adaptation than NGE (note I actually like GuP, but it was a bit of a chore to sit through despite the interesting premise).

Wasn't there a plan by WETA Workshop for a live-action NGE movie that's been in stuck fast in the ninth circle of Development Hell for over a decade now?

As for the tech and cloud storage discussion... given that it seems to have focused around ensuring access to one's data for the purpose of uninterrupted writing of fanfiction, particularly the one we're reading, does that count as meta-on-topic?;)

I can understand the reason for the warning, but I've found it frustrating at times. As long as a conversation isn't spamming the thread with 15 pages in 2 days, and everyone is being civil, I'm inclined to let things flow.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Further, if this conversation moves to PM, then there are lot of people who will miss out on some very useful techniques. Let this one ride for a bit.

Ok, new laptop, Wilson II, is online. I've got Chrome and Discord working again, so bare functionality is GO. Now to see if my Docs survived...
To answer the discussion about the cloud and backups, I do backup A&T to GDrive, but I hadn't done the daily hit for that night when I spilled the drink, so I'd lost the part I'd literally just been writing, a tough scene I was finally happy with. A&T itself and the Christmas Special weren't backed up for that day, so we wouldn't have lost everything, just the recent parts.
Also, poor laptop, but at least you got a new one Stryp. Though, if it has Win10, may god have mercy on your soul.
But it pales in comparison to Win7, and I'll leave it there.
I had Win7 Professional. I liked it.

...Now I'm bashing my head against Win10, yes. On the upside, I've copied everything over (I think), though I already hate the new keyboard. And Win10. Oh gods do I hate Win10 already.

Well, that's sort of self-answering: We're at page 1012. It took a year and a half to make page 300. It took less than half that to shoot to 1000. Derails can really just make the thread a chore for new people to wade through, so I try to encourage things to at least stay Eva-relevant. I like WH40K, but there are threads for it, not here. I don't mind A&T being the semi-default Eva Discussion thread for SV, since it kind of kickstarted the local revival, but not just random nattering about the Holy Roman Empire or Worm, etc.

The month-long threadban thing isn't even me. That's what happens when I'm out of touch for a day, the thread goes loopy, and my fellow Mods step in.

Anyhow... recovery successful for the part I had written. Here's most of it, just so it's now safely posted. Regular writing will hopefully resume tomorrow.

Kaworu looked around, smiling at the familiar glows and harmonies coming off the happy couples and one trio around him. Even Ayanami's glow was recovering well from the damage of the last Angel. She was smiling herself, watching a grinning Second Child pull the Third under a specific spot of the entryway to the kitchen, turn him to face her, and point upwards.

Shinji looked up, and said something. Kaworu looked towards the same spot, noting a cluster of leaves and berries hanging from a string near the ceiling. Shinji looked back down and appeared to ask a question. Asuka said something that made them both blush. Shinji stammered something back, and they both drew in close for a slow kiss.

Ayanami let out a small, happy sigh. Kaworu tried not to be too obvious about vibrating in harmony to the sound. His motion still attracted Ayanami's attention. When she turned to look at him, her smile fading away to the careful blankness she'd taken to maintaining around him since the battle, and their conversations afterward. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Yes?"

"Can you tell me what that was about?"

"That was the purpose of this party."

Kaworu cocked his head. "Surely Miss Soryu and Shinji-kun have no trouble finding plentiful occasions to kiss in any given day? Why the unusual outfit and party? And the piece of a bush hung from the ceiling?"

"Asuka informed me that the sight of the Santa outfits inspired a desire in her to take advantage of as many Christmas traditions involving lovers as she can, as she has never had the opportunity to before, nor very much enjoyment in Christmas overall. Ergo, she acquired Santa outfits for her, myself, and Hikari, and organized this party largely with the goal of what she is doing now."

"Kissing him." Kaworu looked again. "Still. Possibly trying to check his teeth for dental health."

Rei gave him a sharp look. "Was that a joke, Rainbow Trout?"

"Yes." Kaworu bit his cheek inside his mouth, trying to keep his face blank.

Rei seemed stuck for a reply to such a direct answer. "Well... stop that," she said eventually.

I always knew Win10 was evil. I still got Win7 on my desktop and it'll stay that way (My laptop, otoh, has Ubuntu, which I love as well).

Thank you for the snippet, I'm glad the recovery is settled, and I can't wait for more goods.

Windows 10 is pretty vile.
Tablet mode on my laptop is at least a nice failure mode for when it derps so hard it forgets it has touchpad drivers.

Still, glad the drive was salvageable.

You're mean, Rei! :p

Good luck with the new laptop, Stryp!

Also...

I will say, Shinji giving up and starting Instrumentality only turned people into Tang in EoE. The minute Lilith was awakened, Third Impact happened, so the world is fucked either way.
I disagree. The tanging happened specifically because of Shinji's wish that the world can go and die. Without that, all you have is, well... GNR. Which could as well do simply nothing at all. And that in turn means shooting Asuka isn't enough to start Instrumentality. You need whoever controls 3I actively wish for it. Something that should be known to Gendo.

And that finally means that Gendo is 100% completely, utterly, absolutely dependent on Rei. Which makes it really questionable why he even allows her the little freedom she has. Oh well. In episode 14 Fuyutsuki does think Gendo cares about her too much (which goes to show what kind of person Fuyutsuki is...)

Rei III would have Rei II's memories, but she won't have the emotions that came with them, only the confusion of having seen them before, but knowing she never really met them until now.
Maybe? Or maybe not. I'm not sure where you draw your confidence from. It seems to me we can't really say either way. Personally, I think memories follow souls, with everything that comes with that. Yui clearly remembers Shinji, and Kyoko clearly remembers Asuka. The souls in the EVAs clearly are Yui and Kyoko, in fact. In that sense, Rei III is Rei II. And Yui most certainly still feels the appropriate emotions in regards to Shinji, as several instances of berserking show. So I would say Rei III did in fact inherit the emotions of Rei II. The last thing Rei II saw was an image of Gendo's face; but the second last thing was the realization, prompted by Armisael, of her feelings for Shinji. And I think Rei III picked directly up from that. Hence "Ikari needs me" - an act of love (see below).

It should be noted that Rei III didn't so much betray Gendo because of her loyalty to Shinji (though it was there), but more because she's bitter that Gendo brought her back and in so much pain for his own ends, not letting her die until he says so. She helped Shinji recover after he started Instrumentality because.....I dunno. I guess because of her own (platonic?) feelings for him (not sure if she interacted with people when they were tanged together. You see, I'm in the "both 25&26 and EoE were canon" camp).
Episodes 25 and 26 ARE EoE. No difference.

Anyway, the only hint we have about how Rei III feels about Gendo is symbolic: How she treats the glasses of him she has. After coming home first as Rei III, she attempts to break them, but doesn't bring it over herself. When she leaves her home for shit going down in EoE, we see the glasses are broken now. She clearly has no love left for Gendo hence. However, she still goes through with everything he says, does everything that is expected of her, until she hears Shinji's scream. The one person in the world who has shown care to her. That is the point where she abandons and "betrays" Gendo. Not out of hatred for him, but out of love for Shinji. That is why she gives him control. If she were just defying Gendo, she wouldn't have done that. And yes, I would very much say love.

Firstly, those forced OS choices are why I always read out the key when I don't build the machine, myself.

Secondly, Win10 might be worse than 7, but it's still good enough for day-to-day work.
The month-long threadban thing isn't even me. That's what happens when I'm out of touch for a day, the thread goes loopy, and my fellow Mods step in.
Didn't you get the memo? People with popular threads are on brigade duty 24/7.
"Surely Miss Soryu and Shinji-kun have no trouble finding plentiful occasions to kiss in any given day?
Shouldn't that be 'on'?

Addendum:
Never mind, sleep deprivation had me read the sentence wrong.

I'm assuming your original laptop was Wilson I? It wouldn't happen to have been named after a certain volleyball, would it?:D
Wilson (2005) might have been named after a certain other sanity preservation object, yes. Well spotted.
The first laptop's fate is rather coincidental then, isn't it?
Not quite. Wilson 1 was long ago replaced by Shadow in 2010. That's the one that got a little damp yesterday.

In any case, I have the scene concept for the rest of the Christmas Special planned, and just need time to write them out, so hopefully sometime tomorrow. I'll collect all the pieces of the Special since Part 1 and post and threadmark the entire thing then.
