It should be noted that there are four other threads with the tag. Two are staff AMAs, one is a funny screencap thread, and the last is a thread about... maskmaking? There doesn't seem to be any sort of commonality.

So... by the way, what was the difference between the time we tried to made a thing to track Sasa Yuuki, and these two times we made things to track Anri and Hijiri?

My memory from back then was of wanting to make exactly what we made these past updates, an item that would point at Sasa Yuuki when in range. Maaaaybe that was miscommunicated in vote, since Sabrina's thoughts point towards her range.

However, there's something else to consider.

When we made the 'binoculars' to track Anri, we were thinking about Mami and love, and the second we were cuddling Mami!

Both Anri and Hijiri were someone we had met before attempting to make the tracking device for each of them. The yellow text here points that, at least, being in Niko's presence makes it easier to make the Hijiri tracker. So maaaaaaybe we can make trackers for people/things we know and not for those we don't know?

This might mesh with an idea I had recently that, IIRC, there's two failure modes when we try to make something with Grief: One is that we just fail, the other one is The Migraine.

I'm thinking maybe first happens when we try to do something impossible, and the second when we simply don't have the required Magical Concentration for it, when we are making something complicated beyond our current means?
"Right," you say, transforming in a burst of light and smiling at her. You drop to the floor, sitting cross-legged as you summon a small sphere of Grief to your hands. It clinks against that Grief ring, the one you never did dismiss. Of course, your finger's still happily uncorroded by Grief. "I'll be just a bit, alright?"

You draw in a breath and focus. Locating Sasa Yuuki... a compass. A compass to locate Sasa Yuuki.

You push with your mind, with an ability that rises to the forefront of your mind like a limb you don't have. You force your will on the Grief, trying to mould it into a shape, and-

-a blinding migraine sledgehammers you between the eyes, an icepick driven into the crevices of your mind.

Your breath hisses out of you in a pained gasp, and you drop the Grief, squeezing your eyes shut.

Homura's at your side in an instant, hovering almost anxiously as she touches a hand to your shoulder.

"I-" you draw in a shuddering breath. "I- I'm OK. That was just- yeah. You know. When I fail to make something. I get a massive headache?"

"Mmm," Homura says, brow furrowing as she inspects you.

You sigh. "That didn't work, which means..." Lots of things, really. For example, that you really can't seen to extend your sensing range beyond the existing two hundred odd range. Or at least, not with Grief. But the more relevant thing is that it means... "Manual searching," you sigh.

You exhale, and focus.

To find the vengeful wraith/with true love's embrace/and follow the flower's élan, poise, and grace.

Your eyes flicker open with a jolt. True love?

...

You haven't known Mami for long enough to say that. Maybe, maybe in the future. Maybe not even that far in the future. Certainly you feel a great deal of respect and affection and frankly adoration for Mami, but true love is a high bar to meet.

"Sabrina?" Mami asks, honey eyes warm and concerned as she peers at you.

"I'm alright," you say, shaking your head and smiling at her. "And I'm done."

You lift the little pair of binoculars sheepishly. They're silver, covered with elaborate traceries of filigree and black inlays.

You take a moment to cleanse Mami's Gem, the Grief joining what you call from thin air. It drips into your hand, flowing like wax from an invisible candle, and you mould the lump for a second, visualizing what you need before bringing your will to bear. With Niko right there, you know who you're looking for, and you force reality to bend.

Your will be done.

You blink, finding a simple, unadorned compass moulded of Grief in your hand. The needle, glinting gold in the mid-morning sun, spins wildly, directionless - but that's fine. You can feel it in your mind, an awarness of a lack in the immediate area.

I thought it was pretty clear that it was because Sasa was out of our range, and Mami's ribbons extend our range.
Hijiri is seemingly not in Mami's range, yet that hasn't stopped us here.

Niko might be subbing in for Hijiri, though. Which would mean we don't actually exactly what we want to search for to be in our range.

Hijiri is seemingly not in Mami's range, yet that hasn't stopped us here.
There's a difference between "failure because impossible" and "success but negative result." We got the blinding headache in the past because we were trying to do something that was not within our power to do: search outside our range. This time we did something that was within our power to do--search within the range of Mami's ribbons--but the thing we were looking for just wasn't there.

I did mention the possibility. While I might be wrong, or the vote might have been misinterpreted, I believe the intention back then was to do the same we did here, an item that'd point to Sasa Yuuki once she was in our range, not outside our range.

Still, the fact Niko being here helped make the item merits being pointed out, I think. It wasn't necessary when making the thing to find Anri, but what did Sabrina pull from Niko's presence? Physical appearance? A magical/wish connection?

The sheer love for SCIENCE!? :p

So our powers are conceptual?
Or Brina subconsciously changes input depending on the situation?

That's... not how I recall that happening, but it has been a while.

Not sure what purpose a compass that points to something within our range would be, because if it were within our range we would already be aware of its location.

So our powers are conceptual?
All fictional powers are conceptual, based on the understanding of the author.

That's why fictional defibrillators have the power to restart hearts instead of just resetting faulty rhythms, and fictional car doors have the power to stop bullets. :p

Right... actually, I'm confused. In fact, I do remember thinking about this at some point.

Why did we even try to make the thing? We could have made something to expand our range instead... and I'm pretty sure we already knew we couldn't make things that'd magically affect things out of our range.

I guess the items right now... simply helped Sabrina concentrate on sensing one meguca in particular? Made it faster to check within Mami's range? Otherwise I don't see the point of them, either.

I think we were hoping that it would be able to function outside our range. Possibly testing the limits of would and wouldn't propagate past the 100 meter limit. Like, we knew we couldn't control anything outside that range, but could we make something inside that range with effects that extend past it? The answer was always "no" until we experimented with lasers and realized that only real physics would.

There was that thing we made to extend our sensing range once, but while we successfully made it, we didn't actually test it. :|

You got a link? 'Cause I don't recall any successes on that front before Sabrina and Mami started soul-snuggling.
You focus on the Grief in your hand. Something to amplify your detection range, so...

"Sabrina?" Mami's voice intrudes in your head again.

"Hmm, Mami? Is something wrong?" you ask, still considering the lump of Grief. Detection. The Grief wavers, edges becoming fuzzy and indistinct, before it collapses in on itself, shrinking and turning a bright, azure blue. It forms a small ellipsoid that floats into the air seemingly on its own volition, singing Witch in your senses.

"Oh," you say, drifting to a landing atop a building near the school. Down below, you can see the lush foilage of the park that fronts the school, and... you can sense Mami and Homura in school. You frown. It seems to be further than your usual range, you think. But you need to focus on Mami for now.

Mami doesn't respond for a moment. You worry at your lip, brow furrowing as you stare at the school in the distance, but... you don't push her, letting her gather her thoughts. Instead, you spare a sliver of attention to dissolve the... you suppose you could call it an Ioun stone. Grief streams away from the azure blue stone as it shatters and the colour drains.

*Reading these updates*

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

... Should we... bring this back up and actually ask Mami if she was talking to us and we didn't answer? Explain we were making the grief thing? Who knows if Mami still things we were ignoring her?

Damn it, traumas. >_>

I would think that Mami would know by now that if we don't answer her, it's probably because we zoned out while making a construct. She is aware that it's a thing that happens.

Has anyone considered testing the effects of grief on non-magical girls? Obviously testing it on normal humans is beyond an awful idea, not even just for moral reasons, but what about comparing the difference between, say, something simple like an ant, and something more complex like a crow, or even a Eurasian Magpie?

I'm mostly curious as to what effects grief could have on non-magical beings that do possess some degree of intelligence (a member of the Corvidae family for example. Some studies have suggested that some Corvids can feel emotions as complex as grief.) versus a much simpler life form (Such as an insect. Have we tested how grief interacts with microbes? Could we try and use it to prune and force traits on a species, for example, although the amount of time this would take would mean it'd be impractical for anything in the near future, but it does mean we can, theoretically, perform the ultimate in artificial selection.)

Although I admit that the morality of such an experiment would still be rather questionable, especially seeing as we have two people capable of communication with animals. I'll still propose the idea, just to put it out there. If we feel like going full mad science we could even see if we could improve an animals intelligence or some such nonsense. Perhaps we could even make a translation device to go along with it, and then we'll have a party mascot.

I'll skip the morality debate: What would we get out of this?

We don't have much time for science, and we need to do a lot of science in order to get useful things out of it, like de-Witching.

Eh, fair point. In the end it really would just be another "what-if" that wouldn't likely lead to much, which, at this point, there are a near limitless amount of.

Sorry, wasn't really considering time restrictions, still kinda new to this.

It's something that's come up many, many times. Both grief experimentation (some people even wanting to try messing with normal humans ) and general, non-oriented SCIENCE!.

Poor Sabrina just doesn't have the time to play with her Grief anymore. :p
