Wait. How the heck did they survive immediately after their revolution if the people they rebelled against controled the food supply?

Presumably groups that wanted to see our country taken down a peg sold them food, but once trade normalized it made more economic sense to buy food primarily from the people they just rebelled against due to proximity.

Not "immediately." The chapter mentions that the revolution is a century past. Trade was normalized for that period, even if tensions were high.
I actually meant what I asked. How did they manage to survive when they revolted a hundred years ago if the country they revolted against had all the food? I get trade would go back to normal after a while but what about during and immediately after the war? Did they invade on top of rebelling and demanded food as weregild? Did they trade with somebody else? Why wouldn't they trade with other people instead of Aramaia?

Stockpile food before the war? I mean, if you are planning to rebel, it's a sensible step.

Alternatively, maybe the population was smaller and a large share of the population subsisted on fish, game, foraged food, and their own shoe leather, while another large share of the population just quietly starved.

Aha. One part stockpiling, one part smuggled foreign donations from powers that found Aramaia being otherwise occupied to be a pleasing proposition, one part reparations, and one part the civilian populace being willing to starve if it meant the soldiers had enough to hold the Aramaians just that one season more that they always seemed to need. But in peacetime, Tastreya is between Aramaia and the Arctic Circle. All shipments go through Aramaia anyway, and thus eat any tariffs they care to impose, in addition to having to haul food across all that land without a profit en route. Trading openly just is not profitable...unless you're Aramaian and are right next door.

[ ] Try to talk with Jaron. He looks like he could use some company. Make sure he knows you're there if he needs an ear. What're friends for, right?

They use tariffs still!? That's like asking to ruin global free trade.

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it still hinders free trade on a global scale.

Why turn down free relationship grinding?

I'd rather not get anywhere near reverse engineering Jaffur's style while he's sitting right there, I'm thinking Fasha. Talking to Jaron is an option, but it feels risky.

Perhaps we should try to get Jaron alone if that's something we can do where we are? Jaffur may have more to say, but he won't appear while Jaron is in front of other people.

"let's get the boy our age alone" is high on the list of easily misinterpreted plans- do we want to risk that perception?
He's our friend and he's been our friend for years now. For someone as shy as Jaron, it would make sense that a) we'd want to keep company with him since he's in someone else's home after a war just happened and got yelled at by his mum, and b) he'll probably loosen up some if he's with us and ONLY with us.

Even if it's misinterpreted in the way you think, what's the harm?

Well, we do know at least one member of the circle of friends has a crush on him, as I recall.

Why does it feel risky? I'm not sure I understand your thought processes.

My thinking was that I want to do everything to avoid tipping off anyone that we still hate the Jaffur situation and might pull something fucky. Mom is here and very perceptive. Probably overly paranoid, and not talking to him here might also be suspicious to Mom, but I'm watching for hidden failure states that will yank the rug right from under this plan.

[] Try to get Jaron alone. We're his friend, but he's shy, so unwinding with him away from our family is probably the way to go.
-[] Contact Maya via telepathy. Check to make sure if she's ok and ask if the rest of our friends are ok too.

We are in a basement. The most privacy we could likely achieve is whispering and as has been demostrated in this update, saiyans can eavesdrop really easily even masqued. So anything to do with Jaffur is a terrible idea and besides, Jaron is likely the most affected.

Idea though. Maybe we should contact Maya with telepathy and check with our ki senses where most of our friends are.

Good point. I've changed my vote. I still think we should get Jaron alone because the "excuse" for it is very much valid. I've also included your Maya idea into my vote.

Did you just ask to waste time.
[X] Try to talk with Jaron. He looks like he could use some company. And why hasn't he mentioned how fast and strong you were? He couldn't have failed to notice...
-[X] Contact Maya with telepathy. Check to see sure if she's ok and ask how the rest of our friends are.
-[x] so I'm surprised that your not surprised or impressed by my show of athletics out there *pose slightly * what gives.
-[X] ask if he'd like to be strong like you
-[X] Ask what it was like in his old town see how far back Jaron "remembers"
-[X] try to swap slightly edited childhood stories.

I just asked to be with our friend. That's not wasted time. It's unhealthy to think of social interaction with friends to be a waste of time.

-[X] ask if he'd like to be strong like you
NO. The dude got brainwashed hard by Dandeer. If she ever notices that something's unusual, she'd ask and he'd answer, because he wouldn't dare lie to the mother he loves so much. He's also under constant watch by Dandeer and Dad's spies.

Ditto. It's a very bad idea. What I want right now is for Jaron to not tell anyone about how strong and fast we were, since that could really piss Dandeer off. Mom is literally right there and will likely hear anything we whisper.

[x] Board Game Night!
-[x] Make sure everyone feels included and has fun.

Also there is the fact that parents often dont like leaving their kid alone with a someone of the opposite gender and so theres a chance she will keep an eye on us while giving an illusion of privacy.
