Currently in the middle of rolling over all the shipyard things and oh man there's fun stuff going around everywhere right now :V

This is the most christmas-like I think its been. You get a new ship, and you get a new ship, everyone gets a new ship!

I mean you have an Andorian Excelsior and a Rigellian Megatortoise coming out of the oven, Stingers, Destroyers, Science cruisers, all manner of goodies, and that's not even getting into all the cool stuff the bad guys are getting!

[X] Vice Admiral Hikaru Sulu

After all this I am sad to see Sousa go. I hope we will see her again in the future.
And I must commend @OneirosTheWriter for making her feel distinctive from Kahurangi.

So tactical is going to need a new head along with the SDB. I like Lathris for Tactical. Not sure about SDB.

There seems to be some interest in Lathriss (double-s people), so I went and found all official game posts mentioning him. Once you filter out the research posts it's pretty sparse He undergoes a change of first names along the way.

Pre-Amarkia joining the Federation, he checks in from a misnamed "Captain's Log". Apparently he has a niece who entered Starfleet Academy as one of the affiliate crew intake?

Captain's Log, CAS Riala, Stardate 22243.3 - Admiral Lathriss

Fulfilling our duty as Knights of Amarki, we have responded to the distress call of a stricken Starfleet cruiser. The USS Vigour, a Constellation-class cruiser, has apparently fallen afoul of the Giarthain Sirens, a form of parisitic energy creature that lives in the upper atmosphere of the Giarthain VIII gas giant. While it was difficult to find a way to negotiate with these semi-sapient Sirens, we were able to modify our navigational deflector to emit a series of low-frequency energy pulses that were able to be understood.

The deflector dish trick is something I learned from a niece of mine who entered Starfleet. Apparently the first thing they teach you at the Academy there is that anything a navigational deflector dish can't do isn't worth doing. I thought it quite curious at the time, but here we are...

The Vigour has been taken in tow, and all but a skeleton crew beamed aboard the Riala so as to not overtax their failing life support systems. Full hospitality has been extended, as is honourable, and has been accepted with proper grace.

[USS Vigour currently in an Amarkian shipyard berth - 1 Enlisted Killed, 6 month repair, 10 br, 20 sr from massive fried circuitry, +25 relations with Amarki]

He's also commanding the Riala during the Amarkian membership ceremony, and evidently fails hard to find the disguised Orion Syndicate freighter. Oh, and his first name is Jaaldiar.
Admiral Jaaldiar Lathriss appears before them, distinctive blue hair and vulcanoid ears marking him out as an Amarkian.

Next he's presented as a candidate for Vice Admiral of Operations, with a different first name.

Admiral Lathriss has been your senior-most mind on battle doctrine. The fact that he is from outside of Starfleet originally probably says a lot. It will also make it harder for him to hold down his position, but Rear Admiral Seruk feels he is capable if people will give him the chance. (+4 to any Doctrine research, -10pp/year)

And finally he's on the short list to lead the Licori War effort.

If you put him in Tactical, you're going to get a strong voice advising for aggressive and high-risk action whenever Tactical gets consulted.

If an ISC-Cardassian war.

You know, I bet the only person more annoyed than me with the name of the new peeps is Alexandria Kuznetsova.

Because now she has to run around and rename a bunch of stuff in her tactical simulations.

(Yes I am implying that the entire Starfleet Battles/ Starfleet Command Universe exists in universe as an Aggressor Nation ATL style Tactical exercise set up by Alexandria Kuznetsova so that she can secretly run a massive LARP/Strategic Wargame with all the resources of Starfleet at her disposal to do it and no one else the wiser)

...There's an Omake in there.

while i like sulu for story reasons
i think chen would be a better fit (even if she might have illegal gene mods)

but having said that
[x] sulu
let him have his spin at least he might up the core spirt of starfleet

on an other note really think we need to go outpost / diplomats / smaller yards
and for ships slow build capital ones but more second line ones + science ships

Challenge accepted.:D

[X] Vice Admiral Shey ch'Tharvasse

Just so not everyone's voting for a human. Get the feeling there will be a news report mentioning another human as commander of Starfleet, so I'm pretty sure the fourth Commander will likely be a non-human anyway.

And then the next Commander after Sulu will be Ainsworth, because we need a superlative war commander due to rising tensions or something.

Man, the thread has been so thirsty for the "S". Is it finally going to get the satisfaction that it been waiting for?

*Augment Chen intensifies* :V :V
I think it's quite telling that on the list of replacements for Sousa we have Sulu at 79, Shey at 69, and Chen at 59.

In fact looking at all the Commander candidates through the history of the quest:
  • Chen: 59
  • ch'Vohlet: 60
  • Sousa: 61
  • Kahurangi: 62
  • Ablett: 65
  • Eriksson: 65
  • ch'Tharvasse: 69
  • Sulu: 79
Chen is the youngest candidate we've ever had while Sulu is the oldest. Admittedly Chen is a lot closer to the "normal" starting age for a candidate then I thought she'd be. Assuming Sulu lasts a four year term like Sousa Chen would only be 63 which is clearly prime Commander time given Sousa and Kahurangi's starting ages.

"I practice martial arts as an excercise in discipline and self-control. Restraint in all things body and mind is how I follow the teachings of Surak."

"That may be Councillor, but you also just used one Yan-Ros assassin to beat another two into submission."
"It was the most logical and efficient method at hand."

while I hate to miss Sulu.. I think we need the more political savy Shey in the near future. though if Sulu wins, I will be happy.

Sulu is ... OK Sulu's basically gender-flipped Japanese Uhura. He's good at everything as best I can tell.

Straak?

Although for some reason the idea that Councillor Stesk spends his time training on Mount Arsekicking, highest peak on Vulcan, when Council is not in session amuses me. Deep in his little green Pacifist heart it says, "Peace Through Power!"

I did have an old omake on Stesk where he admits to being a 'convert' to Surak (and pacifism) after rejecting the path of logic as a young man. I'm pretty sure he knows how to throw a punch, or at least he did once upon a time.

There's no believer like a convert.

In-universe Sousa was already a candidate when Kahurangi was chosen (though the character was only created later), at 50.

This really is a no-brainer. He's available. Take him.

I wonder who will take over Sulu's former command, assuming he does win this vote.

I don't really think the commander of Starfleet needs to be a superlative fighter. That isn't their role. They need an understanding of fleet tactical command, but even if Earth itself was being attacked I'd still expect someone else to take command of the defense fleet. The commander of Starfleet in essence handles high level logistics. The essential question of the office is do the captains and commodores and rear admirals have the resources they need to do their jobs and succeed. Be those resources materiel, ships, training, time, or support or command personnel.

Ainsworth is a fantastic tactical commander but she'd be wasted as the commander of Starfleet.

e: To use historical analogy, Nimitz was undoubtedly the man the USA needed in command of the Pacific War, but he was not a distinguished battleship commander. Nor did he ever sally forth with a fleet during the war. He got the job because he was very familiar with the Navy's resources and personnel.
