See, if she was trying to beam the Emperor off of his ship as it blew up, I might believe she was trying to save him, but considering she's trying to avert the Federation encounter I think she's only claiming that motive for her crew's benefit.

I doubt it. Even if the Emperor had survived that battle, he would probably have been the first target for Romulan assassins trying to manipulate the politics of the empire. And even if he lived through all the turmoil of the immediate post-war, he'd be humiliated and weakened for decades trying to rebuild what he lost. The best way to ensure her emperor survives and prospers is to make the war with the Federation never happen. And the most reliable way to do that via time travel is to make sure the Federation never existed.

The Arcadians are doomed if she wins this temporal jaunt.

No Federation = no limits of Romulon expansion in that area.
If she does destroy Vulcan before the Romulon split, then the Klingons have unfettered access.

Both polities would not hesitate to conquer the Arcadian empire.

It's also possible that as one of the Emperor's advisors, she's part of the reason why the Empire was so attracted to going to war to keep mentats in the first place? Too many motives to discern though, especially once you account for houses like the Bene who may have played a hand in encouraging the Emperor to take high risk decisions, like sallying with his fleet.

She could have also gone back a year and warned him and the nobles that fighting the Federation is a bad idea.

I don't think the mentats are good at long-term planning.

What gave it away? When they decided, "Gee, let's blow up a star, how could our neighbors react to this, given they're already pretty twitchy around us"?

She could have also gone back a year and warned him and the nobles that fighting the Federation is a bad idea.

Heck, go back a year and half, warn 'im that we are not bluffing, get their house in order NOW.

You guys are kind of missing the point. The mentat is hardly going to suggest the solution that requires mentats to be heavily restricted and regulated.

There are time-travel answers that do not require this and also do not involve destroying the Federation or any other political entities.

And frankly if they can't reflect on themselves enough to see the Mentat model as it was was probably not sustainable...

So in other news I've been poking around in old updates for ~reasons~ and I noticed something that escaped commentary at the time, RE: our favorite green hypercapitalists transitioning to hypersocalists:

Orions - 2xBerth Upgrades 600kt->800kt @ Alukk

This is an interesting upgrade. I believe @anon_user 's designs are still valid, and if I'm reading them right, there's no need for the Orions to upgrade because all their current designs either fit comfortably in a 600kt berth or are larger than 800kt. So they're clearly planning to build 800kt ships that aren't currently in their fleet.

Hey, do you know what ship is exactly 800kt?
Centaur-A Refit 2308-Now [315m 800k t]
C3 S3 H2 L3 P3 D3
Cost [80br, 70sr, 2 years], Crew [O-1, E-2, T-2]

I suspect the Orions are prepping to build Starfleet designs, and we may be looking at a deal soon like with the Indorians and the Renaissance, depending on how membership talks go. This could also be an indication they're prepping to roll out a new domestic design, however.

They could also be looking at other ship classes, like the Constellation at 700kt. I'd wonder if they would license from a member world like the Amarki as well, but Orion ships seem more generalist, and the Centaur is pretty... general.

I recall having once suggested they were probably going to build some Centaurs with the "It was good enough to save the Union, shut up" rationale.

Could also be for civilian ships. The Orions did lose a number of cargo ships and other sort during the Syndicate crisis with all the hijackings and smuggling.
