Or by the writings of authors who studied history, like how in Lord of the Rings Tolkien has Frodo write a poem in honour of Gandalf after Moria, or how in Patrick O'Brians Aubrey-Maturin series many characters discuss and recite poetry. Notably neither of those two made it to the Hollywood adaptations, though I do remember seeing a deleted scene from Master and Commander where one of the officers stands up during dinner to recite a poem he'd composed about their current voyage.
By the way in the book Frodo translated the elves song and then Sam attempted to add a firework verse. Sam's verse and the elves poetry made it into the film (at least the extended edition, which is what I last watched)

So since the vote looks pretty settled what do you guys think we should do next turn? Obviously we cannot see what the plan format will look like with all the changes, but we can at least make plans in principle. I think we should do some combination of the following in rough order of importance
  1. Settle in and learn the lay of the land in Laurelorn politically
  2. Poke the Library of the Morning for any low-hanging fruit
  3. See if we can get on the ground floor of collaboration with the Ulricans
  4. Use our Grey College connections to look into the Hedgewise
  5. See about getting help from Kislev and/or Bretonia

I think we should start looking into runesmiths for the Waystone project ASAP. It is explicitly the reason we were approached after all and I think Laurelorn might feel a little cheated if we focus our recruitment efforts on humans instead.

And getting some runesmiths is going to make recruiting human magisters so much easier, another bait in the hook to tempt potential recruits.

We should ask Jade or Amber or preferably both orders for help.

Poetry used to be a lot more a part of daily life, and its historical association with the upper classes is mostly just because that's what got recorded - the poet laureate would have their works published, while the troubadour at the local pub wouldn't. It's far from my area of expertise but my impression is that it serves a vital function in society before literacy becomes widespread because meter and rhyme serve as mnemonic devices to better preserve oral history. You can get a glimpse of how much has changed by things like how much influence the works of the inestimable Rabbie Burns had on the Scottish national identity. Or by the writings of authors who studied history, like how in Lord of the Rings Tolkien has Frodo write a poem in honour of Gandalf after Moria, or how in Patrick O'Brians Aubrey-Maturin series many characters discuss and recite poetry. There's another world out there where a Boney with more of a head for poetry has written Mathilde reciting a poem here and there, and possibly writing one or two of her own.
So what I'm hearing is that poetry omake submissions are not only valid but stand a chance of being made canon?

I think the only thing of importance is actually collating the available information on Waystones. Thats bound to take a while :V.

Edit: I am thoroughly uninterested in poking around politics. We have only ever interacted with them out of necessity and in pragmatism and while i understand its something that people that want to eventually become supreme matriarch desire, its honestly not a trend i want to buck. If Ulrican help becomes something we see as useful, i would ask them but making overtures just for the sake of making overtures is not why i wanted this project to go off.

I honestly think we should just take stock of the unfamiliar situation and knowledge base available to us, immerse properly in local variant of Eltharin and chat up the Grey Lords.

A painting of the August Order of the Ducklings, depicting yourself, Johann, Max, Panoramia, Hubert, Gretel, and Adela.
I don't know if this was a recent edition since the last update or if it's been there a while, but it's nice. I feel kinda bad that Esbern and Seija aren't on it, but I guess they were never really part of the August Order of Ducklings.

2: check out some historical accounts from the elves prospective is the lowest fruit I can think of. We are at (2/3) old world history. That's the big 30 leaning right there.

5. I think that's walking before swimming, we have: elves, dwarfs, local human nobles, Ulricans and hegewise as groups we have to meet, make nice with, get to help and juggle just in the local.

Start learning languages with Polyglot, especially elven languages found in the library.

AV, so I stop spontaneously extruding tears of pure frustration.

We should dedicate most of next turn to actually setting up shop in Laurelorn, with all that that entails. How that looks action wise heavily depends on multiple things, like the new actions available, the new action economy system and whether next turn is even a normal turn as opposed to some kind of set-up interlude.

Waystone actions:

Touching base with the situation in Laurelorn is a good idea. We need to know who the big players and their factions are, because I doubt that they are a monolith block and I suspect many won't be happy to see us.

Getting in contact with the Cult of Thungni is also high on the list; doesn't matter if it's Kragg, Thorek or generic runesmith #83. I personally favour Thorek because I suspect he's more able to recommend a suitible candidate.

Jades and Amber's I'm happy to leave a turn before we talk to them, we got Egrimm, Max and Johann because of prior conections, because I want some groundwork done before we call in with the other colleges. Then again, a meeting with the Amber's is probably a meeting with Dragomas, and that'll be cool to read, especially since we know he's in support of the project and he already likes us. Maybe Amber's this turn, Jades next, possibly after Pan becomes a magister? We don't have to wait for that, but it feels right to me.

Talking with the Cult of Ulric is... something that can also be left for later turns, but I wouldn't mind if it happened this turn either.

Hedgewise is a high priority—if we get them onboard early enough, people will have a hard time objecting to their inclusion. There are two hedgewise groups, I think? A Ranald worshipping group with beef with the Ulricans, and another group that worships the Hedgewise goddess (forgot her name).

Find a waystone. This is pretty important. Shouldn't be too hard. Might have to kill a few beastmen first. Hopefully it's not in Nordland because that would be twelve levels of uncomfortable.

Personal actions:

I suspect windherder and rite of way are going to be top of the list. I'd like to do some Apparitions stuff and maybe some AV stuff?

I'd like to get recruiting some runesmiths as much as the next person, but I feel like taking some time to really iron things out would benefit our recruitment efforts more than just jumping right in on recruiting. Think... the safety actions we did on AV before handing it over to Thorek, though not necessarily as extensive. Plus, it would help if we actually had some idea of how a runesmith might contribute, since that'll help narrow down who exactly we'll approach.

I'd say our first priority should be getting the lay of the land, so to speak. Getting a feel for Laurelorn and it's inhabitants, getting a more concrete idea of our project goals, and seeing what it would take to bring the other parties we originally approached onboard. After that... well, I'd say windherding for option one, AV and swording for options two and three. Windherding first because we've yet to touch it and it's a potentially really big thing, AV and swording next because we're already partway into those trees.

We gave up all our cool Skaventech for Gehenna's hounds, I want to actually put that knowledge to use and make back our investment, so to speak. Even if for something as simple as making automaton assistants for the Library/Branch college.

I agree with creating Apparations, but they don't really have the temperament or mental structure? For a job like assistant.

Apparitions are very much a tool for war more than anything else. We'd have a very hard time making them do something as complicated/intellectual as sorting books, never mind anything more complicated. I really don't see them being of help for the Waystone project; not more than any other method of buffing Mathilde's combat ability in general.
