[X] Mari Rule Number Twelve: Press Your Advantages
Word Count: 283
  • Takahashi
    • Mari shadow clone, reach estate without being seen.
    • Arrange for loyal and stealthy Takahashi nin to meet with team secretly to refill chakra. Mari picks the location.
    • Who warned us?
    • Brainstorm/rehearse public confrontation with Takahashi's input
      • Premise: Takahashi calls for town meeting to discuss death of the Pangolin Summoner, who should receive the Scroll, etc.
        • Keiko summons most or all of her tessera as Noburi transfers chakra from Takahashi ninja to top off team.
        • The team arrives dramatically.
      • Keiko will be intimidating and frustrated about their pathetic attempt of attack.
        • Do you have any idea the power Leaf can bring to bear? Keiko's team are diplomats. Do you really want to see what a Leaf strike force is like?
        • Many nations view assaulting diplomats as grounds for war. Luckily, Keiko prefers cooperation.
      • Inoue is a coward who can't stand up for anything if it puts her at risk. She claims she can lead Isan? Laughable.
        • She dares invoke the words of lying Azai over the pangolins and calls a lawful duel murder?
          • Ask what summoned Pangolins think about Inoue's implication they are Keiko's puppets.
        • Azai's corruption and foolishness clearly lingers within his closest associates, and must be purged. Loremasters and Isan will crumble beneath her weakness, deceitfulness, and corruption if she isn't put down.
      • Takahashi intervenes on behalf of Isan, soothes Keiko's wrath, offers alternatives/concessions, making a strong display of authority and concern for Isan.
        • Have Takahashi talk Keiko down to removing Inoue as clan head and undergoing ritual purification, along with attackers.
        • General idea is to portray Takahashi as protector and uniter of Isan, who is more capable of leading than anyone.
      • Involve allies as Takahashi/Mari deem appropriate.

The winning plan lacks details on how Takahashi is going to negotiate us down, while other plans do. That shouldn't be left as an exercise for the QM. I think we can safely get rid of pangolins' opinion in favor for other details.

[X] Mari Rule Number Twelve: Press Your Advantages

I know we're supposed to push hard to discredit Inoue, but besides taking advantage of our demise, what's the basis for implying she's as bad as Azai or needs to be "purified"?

Also, wary of implying that a clan head should be removed. That's sets a huge precedent that we can coerce the removal of clan heads. It seems like an over reach.

I'll also add that suggesting this to Takahashi won't go over well. He doesn't know the context or spirit which its being proposed and might react like In a similar way as Keiko did with that plan a few updates ago.

It's better to just discredit her as worthy of being leader of Isan and boost Takahashi with a contract or scrolls to bribe and bolster the power of the other clans. Set him up as a first among equals if thats more palatable among the clan heads or villagers

I don't think we need to hand-hold the conversation or Takahashi, imo. If there's additional strategies people want I probably won't mind adding them, but if the plan is too rigid and specific it'll fall apart the minute anything doesn't go the way we want it to

They literally just blew up the house we were staying in in an attempt to kill us and seize power. What would you consider an appropriate response to that?

what's the basis for implying she's as bad as Azai or needs to be "purified
The subtext is that she has to acknowledge Keiko's authority as legitimate. The basis is she just condoned people trying to kill us and called us liars, and then lied about us being dead

I'll also add that suggesting this to Takahashi won't go over well. He doesn't know the context or spirit which its being proposed and might react like In a similar way as Keiko did with that plan a few updates ago.
Remember that Mari is the one suggesting it, not Hazou. I'm sure that she'll make her own adjustments, but she also knows how to make a pitch.

I made some edits to the Takahashi section - I think it needs fleshing out.

I'm not sure that Keiko having her entire tessera is a good idea; it's a lot of chakra when three to four would likely suffice.

    • Inoue is flatly wrong.
      • Her claims are invalid - Keiko et. al survived the attack. This means that Azai lacked Ui's favour and that Keiko has it. Any wisdom Azai passed down is poison.
        • As the loremaster, Inoue should have been able to navigate this situation. She failed because she is a power-hungry coward and unsuited to leadership.
        • Azai's corruption has spread to his close associates. They need to be purified.
        • Not-so-subtext: death purifies.
    • Keep squeezing until Takahashi deems it time to intervene.
      • He simultaneously takes hard (they knew about the attack and were in no real danger, so it's crass to try to leverage it) and soft (you're my apprentice, we have a bond, much of Isan has treated you well) with Keiko.
      • He acknowledges that the High Priest was rotten and that his close associates cannot be trusted implicitly; however, the High Priest's influence was strong. They can be purified and forgiven for confusing that strength as stability in a turbulent time. Obviously, there will be consequences, but they will be handled internally.
      • General idea is to portray Takahashi as protector and uniter of Isan, who is more capable of leading than anyone, contrasted against Inoue and Keiko.
  • Involve allies as Takahashi/Mari deem appropriate.

It's called being handwavy.

Remember the disasterous plan that we/Hazo put out about some big rituals? it's underspecified, so if it's a question mark for us, then it's also likely a question mark for the QM.

I don't understand how exactly is Takahashi is going to beat down Keiko and be seen as a hero/uniter, do you?

I think there's a difference between "okay Mari just make us win" and "ok mari this is the strategy we want and what we want to accomplish, what dialogue should we use since that's your entire specialty?"

I don't think the plan was bad just because it wasn't specific enough. We had a wildly different impression of the outcome than anyone in universe did, that had nothing to do with specification.

He has a much better grasp on his image in isan than us. We can suggest which parts of keiko's speech he calls out, which parts of pangolin dogma he doesn't like, say Isan is more than a summoners lackeys or whatever. Fundamentally, he's going to know what would work much better than us, and I don't think we're giving him nothing to go on.

They literally just blew up the house we were staying in in an attempt to kill us and seize power. What would you consider an appropriate response to that?
I get were justified in being outraged. But as far as I know, Inoue is guilty of being an asshole and looking the other way when it comes to our would-be killer's.

We don't even know who tried to kill us or who masterminded the whole thing. No one's going to volunteer themselves to our idea of purification after what recently occured.

IMO, The people of Isan are cowed, possibly terrified of us, so we cant really trust what they tell us or shows of submission. The solution I think that would work is to disarm them by making them think the tail is wagging the dog.

We backdoor our way in, influencing how they develop. Keep them dependent on us by dripping out some goodies and guide their growth in the background.

Big this. Right now Inoue can just say that she heard we died and responded as best she could. We can get her on doctrinal stuff but we can't prove she ordered the hit or had any involvement.

If we're going to be rid of her we need to put in the work to frame a narrative where she and our would-be assassins are linked and damn the evidence. I think that's possible if we link both of them to the High Priest.

I wonder how openly Takahashi would feel comfortable saying that the High Priest was an asshole - specifically, how much of the village is relieved he's gone.

Takahashi intervenes on behalf of Isan, opposes Keiko's wrath, making a strong display of authority and concern for Isan.
  • Have Takahashi talk Keiko down to removing Inoue as clan head and undergoing ritual purification, along with attackers.
  • General idea is to portray Takahashi as protector and uniter of Isan, who is more capable of leading than anyone.
So I will observe a smidge of concern at this section, and to the equivalent sections from @FaintlySorcerous @Orisha91. Letting Takahashi be the guy who unites Isan is a good thing, yes, but we don't want to seem too aggressive or willing to back down to him, since it reflects badly on Leaf as aggressors and too easily subdued, thus weakening the idea of a Leaf-Isan alliance. To retierate: Takahashi should not be opposing Keiko, making her blink, or otherwise chastening her.

I think @Tua's section is the best fit for what I am looking for, which is having Takahashi speak softly and from a position where he recognizes that Isan has done wrong (ie a position of weakness). Because Isan has repeatedly used military violence to attack us when it didn't get its way.

Hey kid. Come closer. Shh.

The culprits already outed themselves.

[X] Armageddon Initiative (the suggestion)

Unfortunately since Hazou isn't actually at Isan ATM he can't actually unilaterally trigger an Armageddon Initiative, so all he can do is advise Keiko that a purge may be necessary (ala what TheHeartBreaker suggested), and then manipulate the situation such that an Armageddon Initiative results from his machinations. Therefore:
  • Hazou will convince Keiko that a purge is necessary for the well-being of Isan. Inoue, Aida et al can very obviously not be trusted with any position of power, since their response to losing power was a fuckin' murder attempt that, if successful, would have seen Leaf wipe Isan from existence. It also has the benefits of securing Takahashi's power (nobody can really oppose him at this point), get that alliance with Leaf (which we do want, I suppose).
  • At the same time, Hazou will write a letter to Yuno and also give her a book (-1FP for him having it to give). The book will be a copy of My Vision, and the letter will comment on he grew up in Yagura's Mist and make all sorts of insinuations positively comparing his methods of government to the High Priest's. All things that will make Yuno freak out, and this should compound with the incoming purge to make Yuno actively work against us.
  • Since Yuno has seals, an axe, and the willingness to use both in a violent manner, this should result in a rapid bloody free-for-all that triggers the High Priest's faction (in desperation, since they will be fucked otherwise), as well as Takahashi's faction (to keep in power), to leap in.
Armageddon Initiative YEAAAHHHHHHHH

The QMs aren't going to write updates that rely on people acting out of character. In this case, that would be @faflec, proposing an Armageddon Initiative in which the majority of the population survives.

How's the plan now?

I have Mari tell us the mood in Isan to feel out how to tweak the plan.

Got rid of Taka downing both Inoue and Keiko. He's balancing both sides and also taking adjustments from Mari.

Also decided to have the team guage Isan's disposition to us with the crowd gathered as well.

And threw in an exfil contingency as well.

[X] Action Plan: Lose In Order To Win
Word Count: 287

Prep:
  • Have scrolls and books that can improve upon the specializations and institutions of Isan's clans. (Get Asuma's approval)
Team:
  • Communicate with Takahashi (Use discrete runners).
  • Ask about clan, police, and merchant reception to Azai's fall and the Isan team
    • Get Takahashi's input on plan (below)
      • Premise: Takahashi calls for a town meeting to discuss the death of the Pangolin Summoner, who should receive the Scroll, etc.
  • The team arrives at this meeting dramatically.
    • Keiko decides if she summons Pangolins for intimidation or not.
Keiko:
  • Demand justice and Isan's debt for the assassination attempt.
  • Keiko can verbally spar or quibble with Inoue.
Takahashi:
  • Have Takahashi intervene between Inoue and Keiko as a neutral party and mediator.
    • Calibrate with Mari's whisper jutsu.
    • Takahashi must appear as a pragmatic protector and unifier of Isan: the best option by process of elimination.
    • Have Takahashi convene with other clan heads to discuss Isan's next steps.
      • Isan has been weakened and divided enough that factions have attempted blatant assassinations.
    • Their familiarity with the Goketsu is a source of precious leverage to have over a major village and should be exploited.
      • Takahashi also has Leaf on a loose leash (Keiko's wizened sensei), but one he'll use carefully.
      • Use materials from the Prep section above primarily to neutralize (bribe) anti-Leaf and neutral Isan factions into following him. (Ex: Aida improve village security, Gasai get Taijutsu buffs, etc)
      • Secure limits on Pangolin Summoner influence in Isan.
      • Stress Isan must be stabilized.
    • Takahashi will present the clans terms. The team should grudgingly accept unless too unreasonable.
  • Lean on pro-leaf allies as appropriate.
Cintingencies:
  • Guage Isan disposition to Leaf team
  • Use hidden in the mist and skywalkers if immediate exfil is needed.

Any thoughts, folks?

[X] Armageddon Initiative (the real deal)
  • Hazo begs his bestest sister for divine intervention.
  • Ami arrives in Isan with Naruto in tow:
    • All tapirs are publicly executed for blasphemy against the Holy Pangolin Empire.
    • Heretical texts are burned in massive tapir-roasting pyres.
    • All estates are searched for valuables (Tapir Scroll?) and thoroughly looted.
    • Arikada is promptly shipped to T&I.
    • Yoshida is presented with The New Deal, one she might find troublesome to refuse.
    • Inoue, Aida and Azai are made to fight Yuno to the death, with Mari covertly intervening to make it extra humiliating.

          • The Pangolin Summoner should guide Isan, but Isan must lead itself. They will make their own decisions for recent injustices.
          • Have Takahashi talk Keiko down to removing Inoue as clan head and undergoing ritual purification, along with attackers.
      • Involve allies as Takahashi/Mari deem appropriate.
        • Prep emergency escape routes: Reverse summoning, substitution targets, shadow clones, etc.
Made some changes, go over them and see what you think and we can go further from there
