On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Of course there is. There are more Elders in the Cult of Gazul than there are Elders in the Valkyrie Guard.

Based on what we know, there is no gender restriction in the Cult of Gazul, we have even seen female Priestesses. While there is a gender restriction in the Valkyrie Guard. There is also a marriage restriction. There are going to be far more married or unmarried and male or female Elders in the Cult of Gazul then there are going to be unmarried female Elders in the Valkyrie Guard.

Again, because you don't seem to know, the ratio of men to women in the Karaz Ankor is 3:1.

Also, the Cult of Gazul encompasses the entire Cult of Gazul, while the Valkyrie Guard is a specific subset of the Cult of Valaya.
But the ratio of Male Ancestor Gods to Female Ancestor Gods is 7:1 so after adjusting for that surely Valaya should be twice as large as Gazul?
Even before getting into that not all Ancestor Gods are considered equal, Gazul, Mogrim, Thungni and Smedir are a rung below the big three of Grungni, Grimnir and Valaya.
And I think you'd chose your god and decide to go for that career before making marriage decisions rather than getting hitched (or not) and then seeing what picking at random from the careers that it didn't disqualify you from, and even if they don't I'd imagine that most Valkyrie Guard that decide to get married would 'retire' to Valayan priestesshood, so it probably wouldn't affect their numbers of Elders anyway. E: Got corrected on this.

Theres not nearly enough information here to make authoritative statements like you're attempting, however I think there are more arguments that the Valkyrie GuardValaya Cult (which includes both the priest hood and their 'knightly order' for lack of a better comparison) likely has more elders than the Gazul one does.

Yes? And?

That very much lines up with my preferences as stated in my post; I value getting started on the commissions we have over chasing after research.
And? I feel it's misrepresenting a bit to describe the plan as "chasing after shinies" over getting the commissions done when it is researching a specific thing for those very commissions. They'll get done either way.

[X] Plan Prepare for a Yorriing

Seems the cleanest option to me. Let´s do our work in case anything else pops up. We have done/will soon do enough shaking of society as is.

What. I can't tell if you just read a word or two and jumped in, ignoring everything else or what because this is just bad.

None of the Cults place restrictions on what genders can become Priests as far as we know. It is the Valkyrie Guard that forbids men from joining. So both men and women can join all of the other Cults.

Valkyrie Guard who marry are no longer considered Valkyrie Guard.
Valkyrie Guard, former Valkyrie Guard by the snow-white plaits and badge of service they bore on them.

As the literal Shield Maidens that defended the temples of Valaya, the Valkyrie Guard served either for life or until they decided to find a man worth their time and bear children. In the case of the latter, these former warrior clerics were offered the chance to become priestesses of Valaya in full and continue their service to the Ancestors in a more domestic fashion. After a bit of conversation with all three, you find that behind their calm masks is a burning passion to take the fight to the enemies of Valaya and Dwarfkind that has not been fully tamped out.

Too motherly for the Karinnzaki and too bellicose for the Thryngazi, as they put it. These three came here after learning about your growing group from Moira. A Valkyrie Guard rarely left the hold, but they trained as diligently as any warrior or Huskarl. These shieldmaidens learned the art of healing and death in equal measure, embodying Valaya The Shieldmaiden's righteous fury and unbreakable will in the defence of her home and kin.
As I said, there can be no married Valkyrie Guard.

We are making armor to arm the Valkyrie Guard, not the Cult of Valaya in its entirety. While we are with the Cult of Gazul*.

Edit: @Dark as Silver you are still wrong on several things.

The affair itself is simple, your mother has already given the possessions she wished to be buried with to a priestess of Gazul, a third cousin of yours actually, before she'd sent for you all.
A Priestess of Gazul. Furthermore, there are no known rules barring men or women joining any of the Cults. The Cult of Thungi is undoubtedly the smallest, but that is because Runesmith blood.

The Valkyrie Guard already excludes more than 75% of the Dwarf population from its numbers. At most I would say 5% of the Karaz Ankor's population are really qualified to join it. For instance, if Fjolla hadn't been a Runesmith, her attitude towards marriage might make her a viable candidate.

And how many of that number would choose to join it? Many of that number are going to be more like Fjolla in that they are more focused on their Craft rather than Valkyrie Guard.

I do not deny that the Cult of Valaya is larger than the Cult of Gazul. But there is absolutely no reason to think that the Valkyrie Guard takes in enough Dawi to surpass the maidens who marry out, die of old age or in combat compared to the Cult of Gazul. The Cult of Gazul doesn't have those things barring entrance into it.

People are hoping that the basket runes might be useful for the commission, they are otherwise unconnected. What we will learn from that research is unknown to us, that makes the action very much chasing after shinies. Talking and pretending as if it is guaranteed to offer us something immediately useful for this commission is as much a misrepresentation of the situation as anything I said.

I stated my reasoning for my vote as a sort of courtesy, rather than simply plopping down my vote without any indication that I am engaging with the thread at all, but I am not looking to have any sort of 'discussion' on it.

And I think you're assuming the horse goes in front of the cart. I think dwarf women who want to join the Guard choose not to get married, not women who don't want to get married consider it as a career path. I think this is an important distinction when we're talking about an order motivated by religious faith, because they're picking out of the pool of zealots who are willing to make that sacrifice and I think whatever fraction of the pool of women don't want to get married decide to become Valkyrie Guards is a smaller fraction of the population.

And general thread question is it fanon that priests of gazul search the wilds for dwarves that died travelling? I might be getting confused by that recruitment omake, but given the story that soulcake included about Gazul and the invention of the sword I would be surprised if the order of Gazul isn't the second most militant cult after Grimnirs. So the idea that Gazul's cult doesn't suffer attrition from combat but Valkyrie guard does doesn't sound right to me. But I don't have sources on me and am going to bed.

The implication of the lost and found action we voted for last turn is that it isn't a standard thing they do right now but it might be going forward:
- [ ] Lost and Found: Gain 50 Favour +? With the Cult of Gazul. Many a Dawi lie lost, their bodies unrecovered in the distant snows of the Far North. It is a grim reality of the harshness of the land, and one that cannot be ignored. The Cult of Gazul is sending an expedition of Priests out to search for these lost sons and daughters and either bring their earthly remains home or have their last rites seen to where they lie. Dark work, but necessary work according to the Cult, and who is to deny them? Depending on the success of the expedition it may or may not become something more common rather than a one-off excursion because they have many more priests and apprentices than they know what to do with.

The difference is insignificant because most Dwarf women get married. If a Dwarf woman wants to get married, they are extremely unlikely to join the Valkyrie Guard for reasons which should be obvious.

Furthermore, as I have already pointed out several times already, a fair amount of the Valkyrie Guard actually do get married. Fifteen of our retainers are former Valkyrie Guard after all.

I never implied that Gazul's Cult doesn't suffer attrition from combat, it is just that the Valkyrie Guard has an option which means a fair amount of the Dwarfs in it can theoretically reach the Oldest of the Old status and still not be considered members of the Guard because they married and became Priestesses.

Eltharin, the tongue of the Elgi, is supposedly a language full of lilting double meanings, metaphor, symbology and almost anathema to Khazalid in terms of structure, intonation, usage and purpose. It is the raw language of the textbooks whose translation you still find yourself reviewing. If you want as undiluted or marred perception of the original text as possible you must learn this odd tongue. Either from a Dwarf who took the time to learn, or from an Elgi willing to brave the cold to reach you. Valma was asked, she said she wasn't going through explaining that hell again. It's as ominous a sign as any.

These Wardstones, the last creations of the Runesmiths of Karag Dum before they were wiped out, are capable of concealing the presence of a Dawi from the scrying of enemy magic. From Valka's testimony it wasn't perfect, but it made survival possible instead of impossible. That, and given the state of their resources, is a testament to their skill and canniness. A bit too quick to put to use in any other circumstance, uncovering the secrets of this Rune shouldn't be too difficult. 3 Actions.

The Clergy of Valaya are making plans to expand the Valkyrie Guard in preparation for what they believe is a coming wave of colonization across the Karaz Ankor in the future. Given your history with the Cult, they've come to you wondering if you had the inclination to create armour for some of the future Valkyrie Guard that will no doubt come from the endeavour. The number is not the sum total of suits, but ones specially made for their eldest and most veteran Matrons. The foundational core of the future Valkyrie Guard in these future-Holds. -[X] Eltharin?: [Cost: 5 actions, 20 Favour from Kraka Ravnsvake] Journeyman of the Odd will proc. Gain chance at an Elf teacher and proficient understanding of Eltharin.
--[X] Looking for a Native: [Cost: 30 Favour from Kraka Ravnsvake] Gain Elf teacher and -fluent understanding of Eltharin. Find an elf willing to teach you, your work will require as best a possible understanding of the elven tongue. 3 Actions

-[X] Odd Places 9/10: [Cost: 1 action] Can be taken multiple times. Roll for usefulness. Look on Master Yorri's map and try and discover one of his marked locations. The locations will certainly be odd, but whether they'll be useful will remain to be seen. 1 Action
--[X] Deep Surveying: Gain 30 Favour +? With Kraka Drakk. The Deeps of Kraka Drakk have long been secured, but it's come to your attention that the grand array of natural cavern systems found after Haruzrildrakk's death still remain more mystery than a well-mapped path. Not through laxness of the Karak's rangers or miners of course, but by sheer virtue of how numerous the caverns below have become. King Otrek is well aware of the plight but has seen it fit to instead have Gloin oversee this particular issue. To train him for the, hopefully far off, day he puts the crown upon his head. 1 Retainer action
--[X] Elderly Expertise: Gain 40 Favour +? With Stormpeak. The Brana are actively looking for aid in the construction of their new home. -[X] Firebird's Feather [Cost: 2 actions] Journeyman of the Odd will proc. You've got a feather! Its an odd little piece of deep red flaming plumage that emanates a faint heat and sometimes combusts into flames that do no lasting damage to it. Transported at great expense, barely a dent in your coffers though, and with a few notes and tales about the animal in question that it came from. A simple enough task to figure out what this thing will do. There's a large body of work regarding the firebirds of the north already, and you can use that as a good starting point in your own research. 2 Actions.

I'm trying to think of the IC perspective of why this vote is so close:

For the Basket:

This great armoury is dedicated to Valaya, in honour of Valaya. The basket given by Her in Her wisdom was given to Snorri for a reason. wisdom dictates he mediates on Her work before embarking in Her service. Before he embarks to serve her children, should he not first study her gifts? Inspiration might or might not come in armouring her children, but Snorri owes it to his own honor, to take the possibility that his study of Valaya's Gift grants him some wisdom to elevate his Commission to even greater heights. Should not Snorri strive to do the best he can in his projects? There is one more angle he can exhaust, to see if he can elevate this great armament into one further level.

For the Commission:

Better early than late, productivity comes hand in hand with prudence, treat massive mass commissions as a unique work in itself. Working on the Gromil Chain press teaches Snorri a vital truth - it is always better to leave yourself tolerances and buffers when designing a great work, then to cut it to the bone. Works of large scale production, such as the creation of an entire armoy is just like an engineering problem, wisdom lies in preparing prudent buffers - better production be over-engineered with margin to spare than not at all. This is especially true, when you are functionally field-testing a proto-type machinery for the first time in this production process.
