On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

wait, lore question here, I read that Alaric the Mad earned his title not for his runes, but for his decision to stay and live with the Humans?
It's said that his time forging the runefangs drove him to paranoia and obsession but it was his obsessive search for a material that could hold the rune of ages was what earned him the title.

[X] [Masters]: Do not teach them the Rune of Forged Limb

There's a difference between ceding it to the QM and making the decision to present it to the bloody Rhunkalbrogg as an exception to the Rule of Pride

We've been told that idea is right out regardless. The more radical inclined runesmiths will ignore the rule of pride for it as it's a non-master rune. The conservatives will not bend on it unless Thungni tells them to.

Well on my part getting an option from the QM to make a decision about it and then going "Well actually I'd like to cede this decision right back to you via NPCs" is supremely boring. Either we have agency over Snorri or we don't I believe there's minimal risks to this if handled with some degree of care going forwards and I believe that we forge a reputation with the Gromril Chain that would obviate any of the risks, but again it means thinking a little about the actions we take in the future. I don't believe there's much point in waiting.
Choosing to involve the rest of the guild in making a decision of such importance is a valid choice with narrative/reputational effects different from those resulting from making such a decision unilaterally.

>_> I won't lie to you guys, I'm seriously considering whether these votes are good for the long term health of the thread and whether I just let Snorri take over these decisions. Ach, a problem of my own doing.
I wholeheartedly support that. I trust you to know Snorri's character and while things have been mostly polite, I feel the thread would benefit if this entire debate was excised.

So just a thing for you to consider, what do you think breaking a religious taboo does to a person mentally, now consider that Dwarves have no real way of letting go of shame, then factor in that Alric was presumably the only Runesmith in the Karaz-ankor at the time that could forge anything like the Runefangs, Do you reckon that his madness just might be because of the shame of having to do so as the only person capable of fulfilling the burden of repaying the empire and having to do so in a timely fashion as otherwise all the intended recipients of the owed debt will be dead might possibly have been what caused him mental issues?

Otherwise the explanation is that working on master runes is inherently damaging to the sanity of Runesmiths, which assumes facts not evidenced any where in both the quest or GW cannon, also frankly a century of total social isolation whilst trying to deal with the levels of shame he presumably felt would crack literally any psyche. The simplest explanation is not the one you propose.

Well we could try the reconcilliation way of doing things. Aka package the chain and Forged Limb together and release both at once. Blowback from the limb gets eaten by the flex of the chain :D.

Plus it's not like runesmiths aren't noted as often spending vast periods of time isolated from other Dwarfs same with other Dwarf professions so it seems highly unlikely that it was the time he spent in his workshop which drove him mad.
You do realize a century is ten turns, right? Snorri's been told off by Moira (pretty much a dwarven doctor) after 1 turn of doing it. If he tried to do 10 turns I'm pretty sure she'd break in, knock him out and haul him to the temple before he was halfway done.

I thought the suggestion was to get it approved as something anyone can learn, not something exempt from the Rule of Pride.
The issues are one and the same. Rule of Pride means copying another's work is Grudgeworthy among the stricter conservatives. A limitation on limb configurations is the most likely source of long term tension.

Something to be noted with the middling option is that it lets 18 out of 24 Master Runesmiths learn it, and the ones that Snorri doesn't let learn it are far more likely to be those that a lean heavily conservative and follow the rule of pride. So they're the ones that are most likely to raise a fuss about any abuse about potential factional leanings, as well as the ones least likely to actually make limbs so paradoxially the safest to give it too if you're concerned about Valaya/Thungi cult issues, and yet they're likely the ones to be snubbed.

There's also the thought to consider that asking to learn something and being rejected feels different if it happens to 2/3s of the people, vs if it happens to only 1/4 of the Runesmiths. They're a lot more likely to draw comparisons between the ones that didn't make the cut and come to conclusions about the reasons behind why they weren't deemed acceptable. So yeah, just go lax.
