On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Gotta get that big reveal. Also Snorri has struck me as continually apolitical in his approach to his work, and providing the greatest good to the most people, we are the Gift Giver after all. Allowing all the Masters to learn the Rune allows the gift of having missing limbs returned to them spread as far as possible.

I'm also for taking these decisions out of our hands. Snorri is well characterized and trustworthy at understanding the implications of what he does. As can be seen by the discussion we voters don't fully understand the politics involved.

My personally opinion is just get it into the hands of every master runesmith and let them decide their own politics with it. It's the least political position for Snorri. The second best would be to just not teach anyone. Because that's also less political (though likely to annoy radicals).

So, for the people that want vote for the lax option, what is your answer to a potential shism between Thungni and Valaya followers. Because it only needs one Valaya Temple pestering a conservative Runesmith for the trouble to start brewing. Remember, Runesmiths are rare as fuck and only in our hold in the North they can be found in enough numbers that seeing a normal master Runesmith isn't anything special. And there will always be more amputees in need of a prosthetic than Runesmith available. Not everyone has the same output as Snorri.

Midling things like the best option: the rune is spread but the Runesmith who learn it won't have problem helping Valayans.
I think you have a misconception. The Cult of Valaya only helps Snorri with the limbs by informing those with a missing limb that Snorri can make them one and they do the parts that don't need a Runesmith like taking measurements for the replacement. If the Runesmith doesn't want to make someone a limb then that's their business.

If a dwarf wants a new limb they would go to the Runesmith, not the Valayans. The valayans just help Snorri with the whole thing because he makes so many so he made a contract with them to streamline the process. If the Runesmith doesn't have such a contract then the valayan would have no standing to demand they help someone by making them a limb. In other words it's a non-issue.

@soulcake Is the "do not teach" option a decision to not teach the Rune of Forged Limb ever to Masters other than our apprentices, or can it be just not doing so until we get it approved at Rhunkalbrogg as one of those super-useful runes that any Master can learn?

Well, that's two hours.

[X] [Masters]: Teach them the Rune of Forged Limb
- [X] Middling: Teach those you consider reasonably sure to use and spread the rune as you do. 18 Of the two dozen will be taught.

You have to have standards.

wait, lore question here, I read that Alaric the Mad earned his title not for his runes, but for his decision to stay and live with the Humans?

[X] [Chain]: Wait until Rhunkalbrogg. (Turn 41). I think I'd rather Snorri make the decision on Forged Limb.
That's not strictly true, runesmiths are rarer in the North because it's the Dwarven boonies. They're drastically more common in the heartlands of the dwarven empire, for the longest while we were iirc the only runelord in the north.
Point of clarification, there were a bunch of Runelords, all older than Snorri that went north with him in the initial colonization wave. It's just the incursion kinda killed them all so he was the only one for a couple turns until they elected new ones. Kraka Drakk is noted to have more than the average number of runesmiths for a hold its age and size which started after the Greedy One got Otrek addicted to runes and he spent his early years as king encouraging runesmiths to move north.

Snorri and Moira both know otherwise:
"Before we begin," Moira says as you sit down in the chair across from her, "I hope you know what this could do to both of our Guilds if you fumble this lad."

Ah.

"You share my concerns then?" you ask.

"Hmmm, you've been sly enough about your plans that I'm pretty sure no one else has caught on save maybe Gormak, but I didn't get this old without looking at the long term view of things lad. If you bungle the execution of this you risk drawing censure at the least, and an outright schism or fighting within and maybe between the Cults of Valaya and Thungni at most. I dare not think of a worse possible outcome, Ancestors forbid it never gets there in the first place."

You feel your gut roil as Moira confirms your darker thoughts and fears, "I have Elder. I will do all in my power to prevent it and have already begun taking measures to make it clear to the Guild that I have no ulterior motive for my actions."

"Trying your best was never in question lad, I wouldn't be entertaining the notion of getting the Temple and Clergy involved if I didn't think you had the chops, but I feel a word of caution and a simple reminder wouldn't be remiss here," she responds, taking a deep breath before glaring at you with a level of seriousness that makes you sit in your seat straight and leaves you feeling like a child of fourteen winters staring at Valaya in the flesh.

"Take heed of how you appear before the wider eyes of the Guild. You've done good enough work so far, but as we're both aware you've never been one for optics in the centuries I've worked alongside you. It's been fine enough before and extenuating circumstances have shielded you from the worst effects of your actions, but it won't be the same with this as I'm sure you understand. What you're doing here cannot go wrong lest we damn our people to centuries of infighting and bring shame to our Ancestors and Descendants alike. Do you understand?" Moira states, voice calm but words heavier than a mountain of Gromril.

You stare at Moira, her eyes boring into you, mouth set into a grim line and hands flat on her desk.

"I understand Elder," you eventually reply, "I swear it on my beard, on the Ancestors I swear it."

Moira stares at you a moment longer before nodding, "Alright then. Let's finish this damnable thing and pray you don't cock it up. Ancestor's preserve us," she finishes with a mutter.

You silently wish the same.

If there's this much debate, why not wait until the Rhunkalbrogg?

Well on my part getting an option from the QM to make a decision about it and then going "Well actually I'd like to cede this decision right back to you via NPCs" is supremely boring. Either we have agency over Snorri or we don't I believe there's minimal risks to this if handled with some degree of care going forwards and I believe that we forge a reputation with the Gromril Chain that would obviate any of the risks, but again it means thinking a little about the actions we take in the future. I don't believe there's much point in waiting.

hmmmm, i guess placing the teaching on hold till after the Rhunkalbrogg would not bee too bad, give the waiting masters an explanation on potential strife that can be caused overall and they will most likely back off with a slight grumble and agreeing it would be wise to discuss with everyone else.

There's a difference between ceding it to the QM and making the decision to present it to the bloody Rhunkalbrogg as an exception to the Rule of Pride

It's still 3/4 getting the Rune so it'll spread still.
