On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

[X] Render Aid
- [X] Lost and Found: Gain 50 Favour +? With the Cult of Gazul. 1 retainer action
- [X] Elderly Expertise: Gain 40 Favour +? With Stormpeak. 1 retainer action
[X] [Simple] Gate to the Sea: [Cost: 5 actions] Due end of Turn 38. Productivity like No Other will proc. Gain 1 Standing with Kraka Ravsnvake. Snorri thinks another patron might be found by the end of turn 37. Knowing of your predilection and obsessive meticulous mind for incredibly robust and powerful defensive structures, King Villi has asked if you would be willing to lend your expertise and Runic knowledge for when his Hold builds the great gates that will lie between the Varn Wyrren and the Canal from the Dumaraz. 3 actions
- [X] Accept
[X] The Rune Metal Pt. 2b: [Cost: (14 -7) =7 actions] Journeyman of the Odd and Soul of the Earth will proc. 1 action
[X] ORDER: Tier 4 Troll Heart

I mean I get that we had a rough plan and people want do other things but putting in 2 actions this and next turn for a massive boost for the inevitable invasion that they will have to endure should be worth it no? Plus we're not only protecting Dawai but also our feathery brethren in their new home. AND showing to all future outsiders how terrifying and formidable our creations are.

Plus most of the options people want to do can't even be finished this turn and would require 2 turns all in. Why not split and do some more research and what not for this and next turn while we do the defenses of a potentially major hold and the Dawais, and most importantly OUR, link to the outside world and its resources and knowledge
Because taking it at all means Valaya's Runes don't get done because the gate is due by the end of next turn and we're straight up booked for every action from now to like turn 41 or 42 there is no wiggle room to include something without throwing something else out which has to be research which means we either throw out 2B or Valaya's Runes and there's a lot more support for the former than there is for the latter. Plus as was mentioned there's someone who specializes in those types of construction who probably edges us out in terms of ability in that field anyway.

I'm not doing it because I think Ogra Wardmaker actually edges out Snorri slightly in expertise when it comes to building Buildings and Static Runes, and I genuinely think we'll get the last standing boost we can get for Ravnsvake from chain so its rewards beyond the gate are wasted, and it comes with opportunity cost of not cutting down more of the research list.
Eh, I just don't see the project as that important as I don't see Ravnsvake being attacked from the sea by any significant threat for the next couple of thousand years (if the War of Vengence even happens). There will also be other opportunities to up their standing I imagine with them next door and marrying into the Ironarms.
It's not about something as simple as making it harder to attack Ravnsvake and getting a faction standing boost. Building the gate means we get to stamp Snorri's name on the big giant gate that every single person that visits the primary Northern port is going to see. Every single Elgi trader is going to witness the majesty of our work. And they will talk about it.

This is a huge narrative boost to Snorri's reputation in the world at large.

I did roll, just didn't show it.
Oh no.

I mean. That's true. It also sounds like something Snorri wouldn't give much of a shit about being the humble hermit he is.

I don't really care that much about that tbh. I could potentially make an argument for it being good for the other Runelords around to get their name out there, but frankly most of them do not need that sort of patronizing so I'm not going to make that argument.

Instead, I don't think we need to do it because I expect that as elf relations and connections increase we'll get to interact more and that when things inevitably go a bit pear shaped we'll get a chance to help elves directly. He's already famous and has shaped the Far North enormously with his sheer presence. Essentially, I don't like the idea of basically putting out a bigger sign advertising our name when its on the lips of basically every dwarf in the Far North and interacting with elves and helping them is right around the metaphorical corner, not when it cuts into research time.

Just for the record, there's specifically a Runelord in the North who's entire specialty is large area wardings and they should be better at making the gate than Snorri. Likewise, there's a Runelord who's entire thing is armor, which means they should probably be better at making armor and might be the next choice for the armor commissions. Thinking Snorri is just better than every other Runelord and using that to justify any given commission sounds like ego more than anything.

That being said, flexing on everyone with gromril chain still sounds like a fun time and I wouldn't complain about the Gazul one if it only took like 6 actions.

Also, just to note, the chain was gaining popularity before the commission requests was a thing, the Valayan one just gave a more immediate excuse to do it over the main rune metal branch.

The gates hold no interest to me narratively or mechanically. Still thinking on the talking points with the Elf.

Igna may be better than Snorri when it comes to armor but Snorri is far more suited to to a large scale commission like this and as I said earlier our Gromril Chain will be of immense benefit to Gazul Cultists as they prefer light armor. Igna is also busy with the founding of a hold and wouldn't have the time for it anyway.
