Can we get both the book and the talisman? The morganian one is only being sought by Owen and Xanatos had buyed what? 4 items already? His money must be running low and most will be after the Merlinian one or the Witchcraft book. So I think we have a good chance with getting both with 10/7 split with Talisman being a priority.

I'd be all for trying a plan like this if it gets some support.

Heh. If we don't get the book we will have gotten nothing that helps our magic at the magic auction.

We will have a sandwich, a key, a fighters guide to aura style awesome combat, and a Talisman.

None of which help our occult at all.

...ironic.

Okay, after thinking about it for a few moments, I think that Owen's interest is likely to be the Merlinian Encantus.

Following the battle with Oberon, Puck got shackled with a geas that only lets him transform into his true fae self and use magic when he is training Alexander in the use of his powers.

I think that, in addition to Horvath, Xanatos may be bidding pretty hard for the Merlinian spellbook even if this version doesn't have an immortality spell, since it may represent safe, useful magical bling for his son. And if Xanatos manages to walk away with the spellbook, he may be more willing to do some kind of trade involving an item of lesser value like the Mojo Cookbook.

Mind, there is a chance that all these assumptions are wrong and that Owen is interested in the Morganian spellbook because he hopes to find a way to break his curse within or something like that, but I think that I am on the right track here.

In terms of active interest, the Encantus gives us Horvath as an interested party and Xanatos-by-way-of-Owen, while the Talisman gives us Horvath, Xanatos and the mystery redhead about whom we know literally nothing. Shame that we didn't clear the higher Intrigue levels in that one roll.

That's my plan. [ ] No Risk, No Reward (Morgana Edition)

Xanatos pls. Why such strong loot goblin energy.
Assuming Xanatos had similar reserves to Doof, his strategy may be to get as much of the low hanging fruit on the cheap as he can while everyone else hoards their resources to go on a bidding war for the showstopper items. Basically while most people are treating it like a hoity toity auction he might be treating it like an estate sale.

I fear that a bid of 10 might not be enough for the talisman, as we do not actually know for certain how much interested the other people at the auction might be regarding the talisman, as we only beat the first Intrigue check on the talisman out of 3 (we rolled a 108 against a DC of 100/110/140, so we only got a vague hint regarding the interest for the talisman).

People rarely just drop dead from dream attacks. They fall in coma. At which point we can look for spell, ask Malifishmirz for advise, or even ask Xanatos for help in case he nabs talisman.

This talisman, in addition to being a priceless magical artifact, grants its holder power over the mind! Project your astral form into the mindscape to travel unseen by the waking world, enter the dreams of others, and fight back against hostile possession you might otherwise be powerless against!
Not just dream attacks. It's a multi-functional item.

The talisman is an extremely powerful tool for spying and information gathering as well, it's no wonder our intrigue expert wants it. The added mental protection is just a very nice bonus.

Putting 10 on the talisman isn't a sure win like putting 17 on it, but there's two silver linings. If we don't win, we get our money back and a lead on who else is collecting talismans. Anyone who puts more than 10 on it is probably a collector.

Okay.

Final thought.

So far, David Xanatos has mostly been doing impulse purchases, since our Intrigue rolls have been providing us with information about how he reacts to stuff.

Owen Burnett is his expert in all things Occult, whose loyalty is just about absolute and whom Xanatos trusts implicitly in all matters, including the wellfare of his son. Owen has, by design, a wooden persona with strict self-control.

This has gotten a reaction out of him.

In conclusion, I think that Xanatos is going to go for the Encantus, on Owen's advice, and I think that it is going to be the Merlinian one. If I am right about his motivations, this would be about his son and beating him here may genuinely upset him.

Of course, it is possible that all this also applies to the Talisman thanks to our poor Intrigue roll there, but I think this interpretation best fits the clues we have regarding the Encantus.

I find it's unlikely that we go mind control route, and even if so there should be spells for this kind of thing. Spying through dreams seems unreliable. For example if we use it on spy on employers option, how are you supposed to find or even understand alien cat dreams? Regarding possession I prefer if we learn to resist it through our own skills, instead of relying on useful gimmick. Without talisman we definitely will have more troubles with Dream Queen, but it will also be a learning opportunity.
