[X] Hire more interns and managers and gain a large decrease to 'Improve Administrative Efficiency' DC

After reading the comments I become increasingly worried of this Phantom. How effective is his hypnosis? Can Technor psychoanalyze Mirage reveals anything if there was any?

[X] Hire Cyrus Bortel as a Hero Unit and gain a small decrease to 'Improve Administrative Efficiency' DC

If it doesn't work out, we can probably find a way to trade him for rep with the Government. He's basically already the kind of person they have designing spy-gadgets anyways, and they won't need to handle easing him in to any of the Masquerades we already did...

This quest is absolutely wonderful. I've spent the day binging it and cackling madly as Doof schemes/blunders his way through Tri-State domination.

Although the memorial to Agent P made me sad for a bit.

Guys, here's my take. We failed. Both times. Our actions just happened to coincide with a plan by this potential Blot. That crit was his crit; not ours.
Well yes, clearly. The only question is: is la Mancha hostile to us? Clearly he has his own game, and given how things played out his agenda is obviously going to color what happens to the Toon Railroad. But his game is complicated.

So, if this is Blot, then Mirage is compromised.
Maybe.

On the other hand, we can reasonably hope to break hypnotism, and it's not inevitable that Mirage met with him under circumstances that would enable casual hypnotism. She's not exactly weak-minded herself, after all, so she's not going to be the easiest target in the world.

You know, Doof obviously won't notice anything, but it's possible that Technor might decide it's weird that Strictly Mercenary Mirage feels warmly about someone who didn't even ruin Kronos' life. Professionally impressed, sure, but warm? Might ring as odd.

So we could potentially put the company shrink on the case with his Psychoanalyze personal action.

There's also Mesmerella, but going straight for counterhypnosis would be a bit much.

Wasn't there a hypnosis lady in our roldex cards?
That would be Mesmerella.

You know, I doubt we'd ever get him as a hero unit due to what's going on in Oregon, but I have to wonder if Stan(ley) Pines would have a buff or malus towards Toon-related actions. He rather dislikes a lot of things associated with them due to his rejection when he tried to become a comic artist with his own toons, but that does also signal he still likes them deep at heart.

I know it's not relevant and won't ever be relevant. More curious since I was thinking over what comic lines I have read and that tidbit from the GF comics popped in my head. I was just trying to think what form that might take on his theoretical character page.

Some of the Blot's older incarnations had him be too kindhearted to actually watch someone die, which was why he always put the heroes in deathtraps and left.
Some of the more recent Italian work describes him as having a black heart, which is concerning on a number of levels...

We have enough Hero Units as it is. Also, I don't want to spend time convincing this guy we aren't a supervillian, because we totally are a supervillian.

On the other hand, we can't take it as confirmed. Especially since this La Mancha paper-and-ink company actually exists, and has for too long to be some kind of scam. If this is a plot by the Phantom Blot, it's one he's willing to commit to with long-lasting, long-standing resources and a good public reputation among other toons.
Unfortunately it's noted to not have been active for a long time, which means that it could easily have been a front in the old days, went bust after Doom did his thing and Phantom Blot went to St Canard without anyone realising that it was one and is only popping back up now that he's out
We've been seriously considering hiring Mesmerella for several months. The main reasons we haven't done so are that we only get one Diplomacy action per turn (and we've just reduced our AI difficulty by quite a bit), and because we've had high priorities on other areas.
Yes but we'd then also need an in character reason to believe that Mirage is under hypnosis, which we don't
Fair point, so I guess we'll have to spy on Mirage to see if she is hypnotized.
Which unfortunately would take up an Intrigue slot and isn't even guaranteed to work with Russ doing it, nevermind any objections he may have to doing so and any malus Mirage herself may cause

Honestly if this is Phantom Blot and what we've been hypothesising is true then it's kind of total bullshit, in one roll this guy has established strong ties with Red Car, found a way to sneak his men into our city right after we finally crushed organised crime and has potentially turned one of our most important hero units in a way that will take us several actions to even begin to deal with

Compare that with what our critical successes got us this turn, a somewhat larger malus to organised crime and not getting a slight reputation loss with the government

Eh, I wouldn't be too chafed personally. Action is all about striking at the right time in the right place, not with the right amount of force. Every action is not equal, so "crits" should not be equal either.

Even if its another potential King I think we can sit back for now. We've got crime crushed for a year, we have the railroad up and running (even if its shady), we have a player who's at least willing to work with us and probably doesn't want to pass off their main demographic by being hostile to the King most supportive of Toons.

Like, very possibly bad but probably pointed at other people.

Given that he got a critical hit against our Dismal Failure, it's not actually all that far-fetched.

Yes but look at the sheer scale of what he accomplished and how it effects us compared to the stuff we've gotten from crit successes in the past, it's also not a case of how much of a critical success it is because he literally beat the double roll requirement by 2, assuming that he was rolling against us, whereas we beat the flying car DC by nearly triple and only got no lost reputation

I'd argue that this is more the result that would be expected from a critical success vs a critical failure, he literally has a way to sneak his men into Doofania right under our noses, has his claws in one of our most important hero units and has done all that while coming across as a great guy

Plus I'd also argue classifying the reroll as a dismal failure since it's only one point off from being a bare failure, if anything it's just a regular one

I may be being paranoid but I can't find any mention of this character and Douglas means "dark stranger" and "la Mancha" means "spot, stain or patch"

Aka the Phantom Blot which probably isn't good

I like the theory and it sounds solid, but I also want to point something else out that QM stated right from the get go in Lore.

Toons aren't always their 'on-stage' and well known persona in their personal lives. For all we know, the Toon behind 'phantom blot' could be a genuinely nice guy out to do good for his fellow downtrodden Toons.

Yet he could also be exactly as he is portrayed in media. But that's just food for thought.

We have a good team. We'll get to the bottom of this whether he's an ally or a threat.
