The problem is that filibustering sets up a situation where she must either snap or give in, and given that she already knows we're filibustering she's not going to give in so easily. If the person you're pressuring knows what you're doing, literally all it does is make them angry and uncooperative. The only question is whether it takes fifteen seconds or fifteen minutes. Personally, I'm guessing more like fifteen seconds:

"You're stalling."
"Possibly! Do you want some tea?"
"No. If you don't have anything to say, either let me walk away or start fighting."
You keep saying 'stall', 'stalling'. I don't get it.

I'm voting to answer, try to find out Riona's reasons, and try to reach a compromise. With a contingence in case Riona seems to take it badly, so we can descalate.

Why do you think I'm 'stalling'?

"You're stalling."

"No. If you don't have anything to say, either let me walk away or start fighting."
Then let's start fighting but in our terms; hoerver some setup must be done first.

I wasn't going to vote but the thread lock didn't change my opinion:

[X] Call Mami for an emergency timestop meeting.
-[X] On timestop, make sure the whole group (Homura, Mami and Sayaka) is in the meeting
-[X] Tone: resigned
--[X] Explain Riona's impressions and the conversation so far. How she had seem unrepentant of holding souls hostages, how the only help she accepts is demananding your soul gem, how she doesn't show regret for Shading even non-magcal girls, everything except things related to witchbomb. And that after everything you've tried Riona still isn't willing to release her Shades under any condition.
--[X] Ask for suggestions on what to do. You don't want to kill Riona or degem her and put on a freezer: you'd want to have her cooperate but she just isn't interested and if Riona just walks away any other suffering she causes would be partly your fault too.

Because kill/freeze Riona isn't something Sabrina would do just like that; it has to be a group agreement.

I think its because Rionna stated Sabrina was stalling after one of your votes and your current vote is similar in tone and layout.

Why do you think I'm 'stalling'?

Sorta what DB_Explorer said - you're vote starts with digging at reasons and getting drinks and talking secondary topics. Starting the 'lets make a deal' section, as it were might be better. Maybe.

As it stands, I think we might have to recognize that our relationship with her, at first, is going to be one of an entirely business and slightly unpleasant nature. We need her for soul-poking, and we can pay in gem cleansing. If that isn't enough for her - if she's really after our Soul Gem - then she's functionally hostile and should be treated as such.

Thats assuming we don't decide to deal with her after figuring out why she's doing all of this.

So. Firnagzen has said that Brinapilot is gonna be kicking in with extra strength for this next bit. As such, I think I'm going to try for a more broad strokes take on @Vebyast 's vote, with a few ideas from @Onmur that I think are worthwhile interspersed.

[x] Internally, mentally:
-[x] Calm down. Channel some of that "excellent actress" Kyuubey accused you of being to not show Rionna your internal strife.
-[x] It's possible that Rionna is being difficult because she doesn't want to give up her sisters shade, but doesn't want you to know about it.
-[x] Note that, if she is holding her sister's shade, she's likely denying the ethical implications of her actions out of self-defense.

[x] Externally, to Rionna.
-[x] Address her "giving up what I have" line. You don't want to take things away. What you want is to provide her - and everyone - with what they need so that more humane approaches can spread.
--[x] Would she really keep those souls trapped if, in her own opinion, it became unnecessary?
-[x] You want Rionna to stop killing people. There's other ways to stop those that abuse magic. And you'd like to examine her shades, and see if they're suffering.
-[x] Without mentioning her sister, try and get across that if she has shades she's maintaining for personal reasons, or hopes to revive, you'd be happy to help.

It 'starts' with direction for Brinapilot. I tried to make it clear those were directions for how Sabrina should act.

Brinapilot: Don't snap, calm down; try to find Riona's reasons for her actions and the reasons for those reasons; if you're losing Riona with the direct approach, direct the conversation elsewhere of worth until you can get back into it.

Then I clarified we should keep going, not stop, while trying to get drinks. I didn't think that needed clarification, but I ended up clarifying it. Mind, that's likely not an important part of the vote.

I don't have time right now, but I'd like to find a way to find the why of Riona's actions, and I don't want to get caught in having and following one hypothesis before we can find more.

Have we asked Riona why she won't tell us, and then why to that?

@Redshirt Army What's your angle on going more specific with this part? Whether it be by somehow bribing her into bringing us along on her hunts to give her targets better offers/a chance to repent or offering our freezer and contacts with Fukushima to her? We'd probably need to go along on the hunts anyways or she'd need to call us in, simply to transport them to Mitakihara though.

  • [X] Brinapilot.
    -[X] Regain patience.
--[X] If Riona's patience stretches thin, intersperse secondary topics.
    -[X] Dig at Riona's reasons.*
[X] Offer and (ask Mami to) get refreshments. Don't leave the bubble nor stop talking.
    [X] Answer:
-[X] It's not about taking away. Your goal is to give her, everyone, a chance to do better.
[X] (Brinapilot, don't just list terms.) Look for compromise.
    -[X] No more killing.
-[X] You'll help fix her reason to 'need' an undead army. Then she'll release them.
    --[X] Acknowledge exceptions:
    ---[X] Volunteers? Fine.
---[X] Anyone she wanted to revive? You'll help.
[X] If she won't share her goal, ask after her underlying reasons. *
-[X] What's her motivation? What can she share?
    [X] Secondary topics:
    -[X] De-Witching.
    --[X] Let Riona examine Aurora.
--[X] Explain your experiments so far.
    -[X] Ask after her powers.
--[X] What does your Soul look like?
-[X] Wish rejection: describe Oriko's symptoms.
    [x] Plan:
-[x] She'd be unwilling to give up her sister's shade and you think she might be equally unwilling to reveal that she has it.
-[x] You'll make a stab in the dark about her power's origin and use it as grounds for giving her a way out.
-[x] Make an offer that would let her keep her sister's shade without talking about it.
-[x] Note that, if she is holding her sister's shade, she's likely denying the ethical implications of her actions out of self-defense.
[x] She won't release her wraiths now, fine. And you won't deny her her home or safety. But would she really keep those souls trapped if it became unnecessary?
[x] You want Rionna to stop murdering people, and if any of her shades are suffering you want that stopped.
[x] But. But. You can't think of many ways a girl gets a power like Rionna's.
[x] If there are any shades that she needs to keep, and she doesn't want to explain who they are or why she needs them... you won't ask questions, and she'll have full access to your research network.
[x] Does that sound like what she needs?
[X] Show her the Clear Seed. Explain what she's seeing: the sheer capacity, the quiescent nature of the witch, the way it absorbs hope magic.
-[x] And this is just a stopgap measure to keep everyone's gem clean while we create a real solution.
[x] If she wants cleansing and dewitching, then the only way that it's going to be possible is by working with us.
-[x] As she's said, everybody's tried but nobody's been able to... until now.
--[x] And if there's something else she wants, we can make that possible, too.
---[X]No guarantees, obviously, we're powerful not omnipotent, but we can't negotiate when any attempt at finding out what she actually wants is stonewalled with variations of "None of your business/not giving up my power/your soul", the latter of which she has to know isn't going to happen.
    [X] Sabrina-Pilot on key points
-[X] Acknowledge that asking her to reject the powers of her Wish is a huge thing, and she probably had good reasons for seeking such power. Mention that even if we're unable to deliver fully, we'll still understand if she has a special shade or two she /cant/ release because its too important. That's something we'd obviously be fine with until a better solution appears even if we reject the idea of holding other hostiles and innocents in stasis.
-[X] If she doesn't want our help, fine, put that aside a moment. Acknowledge lack of detail to our promises. Bring out special Clear Seeds (happy-grief and quiescent ones, at least) , mention tests and ask opinion on results thus far. Is this at least any better than other attempts she's aware of? Can she do that at least that much considering she isn't going to get anything productive out of this trip otherwise?

Insofar as Rionna actually cares about stopping false grief controllers on moral grounds, I think that saying "stop killing people, we can stop abuse in other ways" comes off as less naive then just putting all of the blame on Rionna, as "stop killing people" by itself does.

Moreover, even if Rionna doesn't care... I kind of do. I certainly don't endorse Rionna's methods, but I don't think we should leave things alone the next time some grief controller forcibly witches forty people out.

If Riona has a line to the thread/soulsight that's not going to work.

Edit: Was concerned I may have been getting unnecessarily confrontational with my original phrasing.

Perhaps it won't, but it costs us nothing to remain coherent and collected. Besides, acting calm is one of the better ways to actually become calm, in a crisis.

I'm not sure where you're getting the notion I'm proposing putting all the blame on Rionna here.

I agree with you that some portion(Hopefully an overwhelming majority) of her victims seem like people we need to give the join or die/get frozen/jailed/etc speech to though.

Edit: Fair enough on the calmness

I think we can agree we would rather work together with Riona if that'd keep her from commiting any more crimes.

The problem is getting her to agree to such a thing. Not just because we'd need her to trust us, or to rely on something other than her own power, but also because she lives all the way over there at Edinburgh and we live all the way over here at Japan.

Even if we could be anywhere in the world in two hours, we do need to stay in Mitakihara, probably more the closer we get to Walpurgisnacht.

Can we really go with Riona whenever she goes on a one woman crusade to stop an evil Grief controller? Or can we somehow get her to agree to capture, rather than kill, and bring Them to us?

I have no problem with shameless bribery to get her to agree to something like working with us. Clear seed upon completion of first successful joint hunt or something.

Riona would need access to a human habitable pocket dimension she can keep prisoners in, considering she's still constrained by modern air travel. She'd also need to be able to keep them cleansed. I'm thinking getting her to bring her prisoners to us without us providing assistance is a nonstarter here. Also part of the point of hunting with her is to get her to open up to us about what her real problem is.

I have in fact experienced the "keep insisting" approach.
And yes, it worked pretty well on me -- I was too polite to say "no, go away", and eventually the person who did it got what they wanted.
Also, I really resented being treated like that, and I refused to ever talk to that person again.

I don't think the "keep insisting" approach will work on Riona.
I don't think "too polite to tell people to go away" is one of her flaws.

--------

I'd like to argue for a different direction:

[X] (be ready for an attack if it happens)
[X] We believe Mitakihara will be attacked soon by something very powerful.
[X] The attacker is associated with feathers, such as this one. (show Feather)
[X] Do you recognize this feather? Is the attacker from Edinburgh?

Here's what I'm thinking: the timing of Riona's visit is suspicious. I think she's connected to Feathers.
Either she's Feathers's ally, or she's its keeper (ie, Feathers is her sister or something like that).

Here are some guesses at how this might go:

> ...so we found this Feather, and ---
> How did you find that? That's from a Witch that shouldn't be able to leave Edinburgh!
> Yeah, it reached across reality to contact me, and it tells me it will be here soon. There's a prophecy ---
> My life's work has been to keep that Witch contained in Edinburgh. If it's gotten free, you have to help me recapture it!
> Great! Now that we're on the same side, can we talk a bit more about the shades thing?
> Also, you look upset. Would you like a hug?

> ...so we found this Feather, and ---

> How did you find that? That's from a Witch that shouldn't be able to leave Edinburgh!
> Yeah, it reached across reality to contact me, and it tells me it will be here soon. There's a prophecy ---
> My life's work has been to keep my sister happy and fed. If it's your soul she wants, I'll help her get it!
> Sorry -- my soul is immune to stealing, unless you have operator rights on the quest forum.

> ...so we found this Feather, and ---

> How did you find that? That's from a Witch that shouldn't be able to leave Edinburgh!
> Yeah, it reached across reality to contact me, and it tells me it will be here soon. There's a prophecy ---
> Not possible. So long as I control my shades, there's no way it could get free.
> Um. Did you mention the privacy field disrupts your connection to your shades?
> Um.
> Can I step outside for a moment? I need to make a call.

> ...so we found this Feather, and ---
> Ia! Ia! It is the Doom Raven! The DOOM RAVEN COMES TO MITAKIHARA!
> Er, what?
> It's a thing we have in Scotland. It means you're doomed. Good luck fighting it.
> Can you at least tell me how to fight it first?
> Nobody's ever beaten it. Got to catch a plane. Bye now.

> ...so we found this Feather, and ---
> Yes, I recognize that. That's from one of my shades, a girl who protects against divination magic.
> I use it when I'm doing secret stuff that I don't want people to observe.

> It's associated with someone trying to kill everyone in my city.
> Ah. Well. This is awkward.

If Riona is going to ally with us against Feathers, then showing her the feather will give us common ground, and we can work on the no-nonconsensual-shades thing as allies rather than potential-enemies.

On the other hand, if Riona is Feathers, or if she's going to ally with it, then let's find that out now so we can move to combat.

Why not.

[X] (be ready for an attack if it happens)
[X] We believe Mitakihara will be attacked soon by something very powerful.
[X] The attacker is associated with feathers, such as this one. (show Feather)
[X] Do you recognize this feather? Is the attacker from Edinburgh?

1. The constant refrains that Sabrina is here to "fix everything" just sound like such unbridled arrogance that it completely turns me off. I don't even care if the QM declared it possible; when someone goes around declaring they have the power to fix the world I get super-supicious and repelled and kind of want them to get slapped in the face and taught a lesson. Obviously these feelings are completely at odds with the thread culture and feelings.
Honestly? Despite our broken power and achievement i don't felt overpowered at all from Sabrina. Her progress seems too slow and takes more effort than what actually required.

I'm quite alienated by fixing everything because i don't think we are strong enough.

You know Rihaku's Even Further Beyond quest? You know how Firn's mentioned in the past this quest is supposed to be about people?

We are basically the Heroine antagonist from Even Further Beyond, due to having a Madoka tier potential 'fix everything' wish fudging fate in our favor. Odds are we don't need godlike power unless something went terribly wrong here.

So we network, try to find as many power combinations as possible so we can reach the holy grail that is replicating our power, whether it be cleansing infrastructure that doesn't need our intervention, making our power consume other peoples powers and replace it with itself, etc. That's basically a prereq for a Good End as I see things(Making ourselves obsolete/no longer necessary). (Edit: Not sure if waxing edgelord or not here) Even dewitching, if it depends on our power, is in the long run meaningless(Edit2: I just realized there's always finding a way to become an immortal/invincible goddess capable of challenging the incubators directly. If we managed that dewitching being dependent on us forever is probably fine. Barring that though... yeah).
