What do you mean with speckled enchantments?
Using Grief to enhance our enchanting results in enchantments that are sort of a mix of magic and grief. They don't scream Witch to other meguca, but they fall apart outside our range.
Also, the hope is that, since they (almost) don't feel witchy, we can make a few useful enchantments and actually keep them around for a long time, if not permanently.

Depends on how long the Speckled Enchants last, and if we can recharge them without having to remake the Enchanting Bracelet Gem.

Found relevant quote:
You exhale slowly, holding the rock on the flat of your palm. You know what you want -pain blocking- so you simply pour magic from the palm, letting your intention and the bracelet guide the formation. Grief wicks into the winding traceries of magic, giving the enchantment a speckled appearance to your mind's eye.

"And for other magical girls..." she says. "It takes a while for you to form your Grief constructs, so you have time to warn your allies. And, um, unless you make pure enchantments, they'd be noticeable anyway. The only scenarios in which having an arsenal of enchantments might be useful is in an extreme emergency, or maybe if you're trying to conceal the full extent of what you can do?"

We just discussed the idea of enchantments with Mami, and she kind of gently disagreed with the idea of making use of a huge array of them as equipment - especially if they're grief-laced.

I don't particularly want to contradict Mami on this, especially since she's one of the leading global authorities on enchantment anyway. The way she described it, enchantments are stuff you prepare a week or so in advance, meant to last a day or so at most - not permanent effects. It's possible that maintenance times quickly become prohibitive?

Nadia's power's conceptual usage as "keep going" might be what lets her get away with having a more permanent "equipment" usage of enchantments. I think we'd be better off trying apply our "control" enchantment to an anchor after tuning it to grief (which, to be frank, should really be one of our enchantment subthemes).

If I need to clarify, I don't actually expect us to end the day with a huge array of enchantments. I want to try everything right now to figure out what works, and expect us to be limited by the time the enchantments take to maintain, so I'm hoping we end up with one or three useful enchants by the end of the day.

Even if we could make lots of speckled enchantments and they didn't run out any time soon, having too many would probably feel Witchy, which would be against the point.

... Though mostly, the real problem I would expect with having tons of new magic items would be that Firn would need to remember all of it while writing.

I guess my greatest hope is that we can make some sort of defensive enchantment against mind/soul magic, something to make up for Sabrina's comparatively low reflexes when compared to melee based and experienced meguca, and if possible, something so we don't have to take the time to make the Privacy Field every time we need it.

If I had to pick, I'd go for something like that, if I knew what worked and what won't.

Hmm. I think we'd be better off asking a dedicated mind/memory guca to make us a defensive enchantment for that - we know several, and things they make will likely be of higher quality then something we make ourselves.

We tested a melee skill booster earlier and it worked, and with our ability to use grief for impulse having better reflexes in general is extremely likely to be useful - among other things, it means we can fly faster in combat. An "inertial dampener" would have a similar level of utility. I fully support making both.

For the privacy field... frankly, we already have a solution for rapid deployment of that, and it's one that obviates a lot of other enchantments we might need, too - we can just get better at enchanting grief to use for snapcasting.

Mental defenses and boosted reflexes are both things that we really don't want to spend even a few non-trance seconds making in the situation we're ambushed, but the privacy field doesn't need to be constantly ready to deploy.

Wait until next week, at least. Unless you want to start making quick chats with her every day (riskier? may work? don't know to social this).
Once a day, for a while. My theory is that if we have a shot at a better relationship, we may need to prove our honesty. Go back to our conversations with Hijiri, and make a meaning of it. My result says that one goal is to show we feel her loss, that she is significant. Not looking away from her - is that the way to do it? I don't want her to hate us - but I feel we must not let her fall to become a monster. It isn't likely a trade-off, and ignoring her sounds risky to me. Let's put in some effort.
I think we did say we'd go with Sayaka next time... though I guess we can go whenever.
The quality and price of the food offering goes up if we change the plan, though ; )

Maybe we could ask Mika for help when it comes to revealing magic to the meguca/Potential parents (and uncles), too?
At least for contrast. Her reality is a bit different, and her goals are still within the Masquerade. Let us gain her wisdom!

About the Shiogama girls, I meant to comment, but forgot: Once they have a Clear Seed, they could, if they wanted, go back to Shiogama. They don't need to be in Mitakihara for cleansing.
I don't want us to say this. My preference is to understand, first.
This topic would come up naturally from them, if we ask about who they have left behind. Also, they currently live in fear, if I read correctly. Part of the deal for them is moving inside our aura of competence, but at home they would still have to fight.

If we want an exotic Speckled Enchantment for study, why not the "Barrier Contrast Sunglasses," a set of shades that create an optical image on the inside lens face that represents the general features of the world in view, whether day or night, plus highlights barrier openings, familiars and witch kisses. Even for mundane users. Emergency Services guys will treat us like saviors. Well, More like saviors. New Magical Girls will have fun training with them.

Unrelated, I wonder how things would've gone had we figured out Clear Seeds before Sendai.

I'm sure a Clear Seed wouldn't have cured Akiko's madness, but the short circuit in her brain might been amusing to watch? :V

Makes sense... we could probably ask Umika to work on some more permanent mind protections, but the only person that would most likely be able to help with soul defenses is Riona, and I kind of want such defenses before meeting Riona, in case of Riona. :V

[X] Take a mental step back: You don't want to take advantadge of an unfair situation.
-[X] Assure them they have no obligation to help; you're looking for volunteers. Ask them to think it over.
-[X] That said:
--[X] Offer a Clear Seed. Standard disclaimer.
--[X] Explain and ask if they'd mind Sayaka copying their powers.

[X] Try to lighten up the atmosphere before they go. Offer tea.
-[X] Chat a while, invite them to hang out any time, promise to introduce them to everyone.
--[X] Tell them about your friends, and about every local meguca, so they know about them.
-[X] Idea: Enchantment + infinite magic. Could Akemi enchant real luck charms?

[X] Call Nagisa. Check how she's doing, and try to set up another visit.

[X] Make a Grief Enchantment Enhancer; use it to try making Speckled Enchantments:
-[X] Perception enhancement (range).
-[X] Combat booster (reflexes).
-[X] Mental/soul protections.
-[X] "Inertial dampener" - counteract negative effects of extreme acceleration.
[X] Test successful Speckled Enchantments for witchy feeling, duration, and effectiveness. Drop those with marginal value.

Edited a line in.

[X] Sabrina now Realizes Noriko and Akemi want to be protected, rather than fight.
-[X] Fictional Magical Girl stuff is helpful too, love our neighbors when possible, follow the golden rule, etc. Is this their choice?
-[X] They have no obligation to help. You're looking for volunteers. Ask them to think it over.
-[X] Tell us if they don't want to scan for witches, but still call us if that happens. We will take care of it.
--[X] Explain and ask if they'd mind Sayaka copying their powers.

[X] Teach them the Clear Seed rules, even if we don't hand it over yet. Better safe than sorry. Demo the Clear seed.

[X] Show them a map of the city. Narrate as we do. Mention the possibility of double dating touring with them a bit.

[X] Actual recreation. Play or watch something with them. Reduce stress.

[X] Find out if they still have family in Shiogama, or not. Do it with the care and certainty of experience from all of our friends who no longer have families. What can we do to help them handle that, if anyone is out there? Do they have close mundane friends?

[X] We want them to spend time each day meeting the rest of our friends. Include O&K.

Unless clearly indicated otherwise, we might have Kyouko lead them in a lesson of acrobatics, parkour, or other non-conflict training. They don't feel like fighting, so we find a way to keep their skills up a bit in a fun manner. Meeting Kyouko without a defined agenda is still too fraught, so we have roles for everyone to play.

Sayaka would have a venue to try loaning her copied powers during her turn with the newcomers? Could this be any more Sempai-like, or cooler?

[X] Get thinking Akemi and Noriko! We can't let them stew and be alone, Magical Girls are pro-active!
-[X] We want them to find things that express their selves, and then do those things. Mami will want to hear all about it over tea in a couple of days.

[X] Suggest one (1) happiness meditation-like activity they could learn. Possibly:
-[X] Suggest they keep a diary. Secret diary?... Demo the teacup trick! They need to study this anyway.
-[X] Show them basic enchantment - With the twist that the starting point we teach is happy emotion infused magic.
--[X]To complete a session, they need to begin with five minutes reviewing any positive events of the day to have those ready for the mental concentration of enchantment.
--[jk] Make sure Yoda is proud of us when we train the young ones

[X] Call Nagisa. Check how she's doing, and try to set up a visit, including Yuma.
[X] Check in with Yuki. Mention IRC?

The 4D pocket is a difficult but interesting reflex. Not only would they probably enjoy being shown, it is something we can teach everyone to good effect. It will make our population marginally more effective in lots of magic use situations. Consider it an undocumented power-up hack. As I was calling it, "poor girl's teleportation."

We need to keep in touch with Yuki, and keep her in the loop. Our interests and her interests are served. We will be wise to get more options regarding Anri in motion, she won't get better by herself. 'Arkham' villain recycling facility - NO. Fame and affection for radical good deeds, let's get!

If we were to design an amateur level soul defense, our best bet is a delay / obfuscation plan to buy time for retaliation? A false self honeypot, in many recursive layers, and with tons of junk data to sift through.

If we just go for straight-up combat items, the bestest thing ever is initiative. And chibi-based secondary sliver of attention we carry around all the time, but THIS chibi is seriously overclocked. As in world-moves-like-cold-honey acceleration. We therefore get a move in, regardless of how we might be attacked.

Anything appealing?

As we are not Batman, I think Mami is trying to keep us from hitting a complexity snag. Not only is her level at Enchantment really high, her public image is built around her performance in duels. She didn't loose. If she tells us to keep it simple, we might want to start by doing that. Mages in other continuities take serious time to develop a loadout. IRL warriors do not swap weapons randomly. Mami has good things on her mind.

If we do add an item, I would vote for something that changes the rules of engagement a bit. A superior, disabling deception is one way to go. Hidden powers are nice, but simply ask your opponent to use a bigger gun next time. Totally mis-understanding the fight makes them subject to our whim. Yuki showed us some of this already?

  • Telepathy router with privacy features
  • Anything that'd let us go exponential with enchanted grief griefhax

Telepathy router with privacy features

This is more something we should do working with Mami. Given she's going to be busy working on enchanting our pendant (quite possibly with a relevant effect), I think this can be deferred for the next enchantment session.

Anything that'd let us go exponential with enchanted grief griefhax

If we can use the griefhax enchantment booster to boost the rate that we can enchant grief into its primed form with, that'd be a major improvement to our abilities (although not necessarily an exponentially increasing one).

That said, grief boosted enchantments that recursively reference grief have proven to cause a feedback loop before, so I'd temper my expectations of how effective that route will be.

While that would be nice, I don't foresee us being able to obtain one before tomorrow.

Do we have a full Seed to use to make one?
