Hazō thought about it. "Keiko can run the numbers and tell me if my idea is at all viable, but I was thinking we could start trading in…"
So, this kind of forces us to at least some up with something. Which... I'm not sure actually works. Making ourselves middlemen without there being actual distance doesn't really work. Anything we can buy in Mist and sell in Mist will already have people buying and selling to one another through well established connections, so the only way to profit from that kind of thing is to buy wholesale and sell retail, which would take longer than we have to do successfully.
We'd need something that you can't get in Mist but would have a demand. The Pangolins might have something - they've previously traded in gold. Another idea... hmm... I think this would work.
SEALS! We can sell seals! Just common stuff, but we can sell them cheaper than normal. We can even make a profit for ourselves - the Goketsu clan does need some cash. The rules prevent us from giving anything to our proctor, but nothing stops us from selling anything to our proctor. Have Hazou make some storage seals, then Karina can use her profits to buy the seals from him in bulk at a price that's low but still reasonable enough to pass muster, and then she can sell those seals for lower than market value, but more than she bought from us.
Also, as we saw in that one interlude, merchants will use storage seals to smuggle goods into the village, so there's bound to be a demand for them.
