Not really an issue in PMAS, since it's only 2011 in universe. That said, if Monikaguca's magic treats reality as just a computer program, I wonder what she could do if she partnered with a hackerguca?

On the other hand, Monika is defined by her limitations and set-backs, so imagine reality having a much harsher rubber band effect than other Magical Girls.

I was thinking more the consequences of a character gaining full metaknowledge, up to and including the fact that their a character from an anime essentially following a script rather then their own free will. Then again, I suppose the trauma from all the revelations, witchbomb, metabomb, and animemetabomb all at once, would cause any girl to witch out right there and then.

Hey, maybe Wally is the result of a Monikaguca? She's an actor on a fated, tragic stage play doomed to follow a script after all...

idle thoughts about memory device
Is its only ability to block memories? At the very least, I was thinking it could probably work as a wall, where if you try to walk out you somehow end up forgetting which way to go and walk back in? Or maybe just alter your perception of where the exit is.

I dunno, I'm not unhappy with the Onmur vote and it's a little late cycle to dispute things. I suppose exposing Anri to us doing normal things may actually help with her.

So this omake idea popped in my head like, months ago. Kind of. Some more, too, but I felt this was a point to stop.

Not an usual silly omake, though I did have some fun playing with colours.
So I hoped this plot bunny would leave me, but apparently plot bunnies are resistant to bullets so I'm writing this out so maybe it will leave me alone.

Hours later edit: This isn't even good, but at least I think I purged the idea from my mind.

More hours later edit: Finished fixing typos! There went my day. :V

You feel so small.

You're chasing someone, you realize, someone precious to you.

In your heart, you know you won't ever reach her, but-

You can't stop yourself from trying.

You rush, the wind whipping at your face from the sheer speed of your jumps, its sting nothing compared to the ball of dread in your gut-

You land to a stop, and there she is.

She stands facing away from you, waiting. You admire the way she simply stands, the way her hand lays against her hip, the way her-

White? No. Which colour...

-hair sways in the wind. You wish she would look back, so you could admire her beautiful eyes...

You can't recall her eyes. Like a hazy memory, you remember how it felt when she looked at you, how happy it made you, how small it made you feel.

But you can't recall her eyes.

Your lip trembles. The few feet standing between you seem to stretch forever.

You try to approach her, but you can't.

Your feet, which shoved the world behind you at your command, feel like they're encased in lead.

She's so close -so far-, right there -where you can't reach her.

But you can't let her go. Can't let go of her.

You brace yourself.

One last try.

You force yourself to step closer, to reach towards her back.

To open up-

"Kato, wait."

She doesn't even look at you. "I told you to let me go."

It cuts you. She sounds so sweet, as she always did.

She's telling you to leave.

"Why..." she almost whispers, "why do you keep following me?"

"I... Kato, I..." your heart rises to your throat, "I...

██████████

-I made my Wish for you," you whimper.

She doesn't answer. Doesn't react at all.

"W-we can go back, t-together, just... just you and me!" you babble, and hate yourself for begging. "Please..."

Her shoulders slump.

"I... can't return your feelings."

She's... trembling?

"I'm sorry."

Her hair is faded, bleached white.

"Goodbye."

When she looks back, her eyes are blue.

And her Soul Gem black.

You wake up with a start.

Yumi flinches away from you, hands held up in surrender.

"A-Akiko! Just checking on you, are you... are you OK?"

You look at your friend, who stares back with aprehension. Concern.

Then you realize you're glaring. You let your eyes drop, breathe, let the tension fade from your muscles, turn around, and go back to sleep, cursing that white haired witch for ruining everything in your life.

Yumi's footsteps barely make a sound as she leaves.

Your friends come and go.

"It's nice to see you doing better."

Meals pass by.

"You've been eating more lately. I'm glad."

The light streams through your windows sometimes, and sometimes not.

'It's a weird though, that we don't have to hunt anymore. I can't remember when was the last time we went on a hunt, anyway.'

You wake up.

You were already awake.

You wake up.

Sakura's hand is on your shoulder.

"Take your time and it's gonna be OK. There's no rush anymore... No need to jump cities, meet angry Magical Girls pretending to be polite..."

"Sakura," you interrupt, causing the brunette to jump off your bed in fright.

"Shit, fuck- a little warning, sleeping beauty!" she yells at you, wide eyed.

You put on your usual smile.

"Can you help me fix my hair?"

Sakura blinks as you sit and then stand up. You stumble for a moment, your friend making an aborted motion to help you when you shake your head and find your balance.

You get the feeling your legs should have atrophied by now... a wave of gratitude towards Rin sweeps through you.

Towards Rin and everyone else, you think as you approach your vanity, Sakura right behind you.

"So..." she drawls, "are you actually... feeling better?" a hint of hope colours her voice.

You sit down, turning your head to take a look at your long, disheveled blue hair in the mirror.

"Lots better," you give Sakura your most confident smile while you pick up a brush and a pair of scissors.

The look she returns you, the trembling smile, uncertain moist eyes-

You look away.

Two hours later, you pose in front of your mirror.

You're dressed in a new, flattering blouse that matches your eyes, with a flower pattern in whites and pinks, a knee-long skirt in matching colour, if not pattern, and a nice pair of heels.

Yumi and Sakura give you compliments as you turn, sweeping your perfectly trimmed hair around.

"It's nice to have you back, Akiko," says Yumi, taking hold of your hands.

You smile radiantly -you're honest with yourself, you know you look good.

"It's good to be back," you pull her and Sakura into a hug.

A few minutes later, you're chatting the time away with your friends -everyone's here, happy to hang out, like it's a special day.

You guess it is.

Eventually the conversation turns to crappy soap operas.

"... Can you believe she didn't confess?" Sakura bemoans. It would've surprise anyone who'd met her how much she got into these shows. "It was the perfect moment!"

"I know," Rin's says while Tamiko nods earnestly.

You can't wipe a smile off your face as you stand up, drawing everyone's attention.

"I want to thank you all for being here," you look at each of your friends, "I know I've been a burden, and," you raise a finger as Yumi opens her mouth, "I know how hard it was for you all to take care of me. So, thank you all."

You're met with reassurances, verbal and in gestures, and nothing but kindness, nothing of the pain and frustration you know you've caused these four girls you call friends.

"I know this might be rude, since you're all here for me," you say, "but I'd like to take a walk outside, and just be a while on my own, take some fresh air?"

Doubtful, shifting looks. Half open mouths, denial at the tips of their tongues.

You hold your hands together in front of your chest.

"It'll be just a few minutes," you reassure them, "and once I get back, we can go out for dinner together. KFC? It's been a while..."

Somehow, the half-question, half-promise seems to wipe away most of the doubt.

"OK, sure."

"Fine, but don't take long."

Tamiko points at her wrist.

"Call us if you need anything."

"Right," you wink, "it' a date!"

You turn and walk away.

"I'm gonna get more drinks," you hear Rin say, "help me out, Sakura."

"Sure," she answers, trailing after the Healer as you step outside for the first time in what feels like months.

The cool air brushes against your skin, the sunlight shines down on you, the noise of cars and people fills your ears.

You walk through familiar streets, pass by familiar buildings, even nod to a few familiar people, who seem surprised -but happy- to see you.

It feels... different. But it also feels the same. But different.

Your hurried steps put a few blocks of distance between yourself and your home, bringing you to an old alley, well away from sight from the common people.

You transform in a flash of blue, your new clothes replaced by the familiar white-and-blue skirt and jacket combination that is your Magical Girl outfit.

Your feet push off the concrete as easily as always, and you bounce up the alley's wall two, three, four times to flip into a landing at the rooftop.

Sakura's brown, accusing eyes stare down at you.

"And where do you fucking think you're going?" she asks as you stand frozen, still in a half crouch.

You fight down the dark, swelling urge to shout, to yell unfair, and instead stand up fully, close your eyes, take a deep breath and, knowing you won't be able to fool Sakura, skip the unnecessary drama:

"I'm going on a Hunt," you explain, taking a moment to notice she's also in full Magical Girl gear.

Sakura blinks slowly. "Excuse me," she rubs at an ear, "I don't think I quite fucking caught that. Did you say you were going on a fucking Witch Hunt?"

You sigh woundedly, stepping around Sakura. "Yes, a Witch Hunt. It's what we Magical Girls do."

She stares at you, incredulous. "The f... When was the last time you went on a Witch Hunt?" she explodes. "That we went on a Witch Hunt? And you just- just..."

"That's just it!" you yell. "I don't remember, it's been that long..." you deflate, turning to look her straight in the eyes. "That long since we've stopped fighting our own battles."

"And going off on a solo Hunt will... what? Fix that?" she raises an eyebrow.

You look down, something you don't usually do when confronting people. It's a show of weakness, of doubt.

"I never..." you hesitate, "... did anything on my own. I always got you all to help me," you look up, speaking quicker by the word, "always relied on you, on the team, and once I got my wits about me, we started forcing others to fight for us, to pay us tribute, and I've just realized I never stood on my own!" you blurt out, breathing heavily.

Sakura stares at you, surprise clearly writen on her face.

You bite your lip, and decide to let it all out.

"... I've never fought on my own, the only thing I've done is control people to do what I'm afraid to do by myself."

Sakura's lips move without making a sound. She looks away and back to you a few times, not knowing what to say or do...

"Shit, I..." she rubs at her arm nervously, "Akiko, I never thought... fuck..."

You grab her shoulder, giving her a shaky smile -the best you can at the moment.

"It's OK. Just... come with me," you squeeze, "I was foolish to go alone, but if it's just the two of us..." you shrug, "we can take on any Witch together, right?"

You spot the moment it all becomes too much for your Teleporter friend, and all her hesitation, denial, objections are brushed away, or stomped down for the sake of showing support for a friend.

Support for you.

"Fucking fine," she nods and mirrors you by holding your shoulder, "let's Hunt us a Witch on the double, then go back and have some fried chicken. 'K?"

"OK," you smile, just a bit ferally.

The next minutes pass in relative silence.

You both roofhop around, threading the old hunting grounds, Soul Gems in hand.

Blocks and blocks and blocks pass you by, minutes and minutes are put behind before you find a trace of magic.

"This way!" you shout at Sakura, who changes course to follow you as you skip past a few houses and land on a deserted alleway.

"I've got the trace," Sakura catches up quickly, and you both walk down the alley, coming out to an empty street.

"It's moving," you mutter, trying to find the exact direction toward the Barrier.

Sakura gives you an odd look, but does the same.

A minute and a couple of blocks later, you come to a stop in front of an old, run down house, its windows boarded up and the door...

Ironically, it's where the Barrier stopped, a glowing white and red slit in reality only the two of you can see.

You turn to nod at Sakura-

And catch her half lidded stare.

"Akiko, what the fuck are you doing?" she asks pleasantly.

You hold her stare for a moment, before letting out a nervous laugh.

"Ah, I must be rustier than I thought," you shake your head self deprecatingly.

With a thought and a push of your will, your Soul Gem shines, and you feel your power start to build up.

Magic rushes through your veins, coming to pool down somewhere around your stomach, forming a well of strength that slowly becomes larger and larger... on the outside, you feel the air around you become moist, particles of water gathering around you.

You open your eyes, only just realizing you had closed them, and turn to nod towards Sakura once again.

This time she smirks at you, holds her sword in a stance and, with a flash you almost miss, cuts the Barrier's entrace wide open.

A blast of heat and light engulfs you.

You cover your eyes to shield them from the blinding glare of the incandescent sun.

Your skin burns, all moisture burnt away in a flash.

"Fuck!" shouts Sakura.

You peek through your eyes, trying to ignore the feeling of your eyes burning so you can assess the presence of threats...

Then you actually ignore the burning sensation, and take a good look around.

The land is scorched, but not just that, it's blackened, angry fire red lines cutting accross it-

And it's hot.

You shift uneasily -"Shit!" curses Sakura- testing the discomfort on your feet.

It's not too bad... for a Magical Girl.

You reduce feeling on your feet with a thought, and look up at the sky.

As if to compliment the hellish ground, the sky shines orange, its fiery radiance nourished by a white hot flare, a sun so bright, so close, it's glare so damning-

A familiar, your senses tell you.

"Let's not fucking stand around, I already hate this fucking place," spits Sakura.

You nod, talking the first step forward. You're not sure if you're seeing it with your eyes or magic, but the whole Barrier seems... round, as if you were standing on the rim of a bowl, and you could see it curving towards the bottom- only not.

"Be careful," you say as you follow your senses.

It's after a minute of walking through the thoroughly inhospitable blackened ground that you spot something.

"The fuck is that?" frowns Sakura.

A white figure shambles its ways towards you. It's humanoid, but bleached completely white, almost a drawn figure walking... painfully shuffling its way accross the scorching desert.

"Doesn't look very threatening..." you muss, nodding Sakura to go ahead.

The Teleporter nods back, draws her sword, and-

"Save me..."

Its voice echoes strangely accross the Barrier.

The figure groans in pain, reaching its hand towards you.

You hesitate for a second-

A sandstorm blows from nowhere-

You brace yourselves against the sudden onslaught of whipping winds and biting sand grains scraping against your skin the gale gripping you in a ice cold grip-

And it's suddenly over.

Almost.

You rub quickly at your eyes, blinking through the sand and winds, managing to spot Sakura...

"Help..."

Their voices cut through the whistling winds.

"Save us."

They don't have voices, you realize.

"Water..."

They're in your head.

"Help me!"

They're everywhere.

"Feed me!"

In an instant, you're back to back with Sakura, surrounded by a multitude of crying, shambling, weeping familiars.

"Hnggggg..."

You look behind at your friend behind you, and you both nod to each other.

"Food..."

Her sword whips out of to cut the head of a Familiar who had got too close.

As the familiar topples down and burns as it lands on the red hot dirt, the rest of them point at you.

"FOOD" "SAVE" "HELP" "DIE"

The Familiars rush towards you in an human avalanche, their yells turning into a moaning cacophony.

You sweep you arms and bowl them away in a deluge of water.

Behind you, you feel more than hear as Sakura cuts down Familiar after Familiar, and you follow her movements as you call back all the water you've gathered, almost as if dancing.

A clawed hand reaches for you-

Shiiing!

Sakura's blade takes that one's head off for you while you concentrate on powering up, gathering more water even in this scorched enviromet.

Another wave of you arms and body and creates a wave of water that barrels against a dozen weeping Familiars, the sheer force of the blow deforming them into... ash?

More sand whips into your eyes, and then you're too busy dancing your way around moaning, gripping, leaping Familiars, bowling over masses of the monsters, following Sakura's footsteps as she carves her way though the never ending waves...

You startle as you land on firm ground.

Not curved, as you -remember- the Barrier's ground felt like.

Wood, not dirt.

The winds abate, carrying away the last grains of sand.

You stand besides Sakura, water at the ready and sword drawn, and watch as the few familiars around you... sink, formless, into piles of white ash.

"Fucking helpful," mutters Sakura as you both look arond the Main Chamber.

Floors of traditional, polished wood, that somehow looks off, the Chamber is surrounded by a wall of trees- not actual trees you could name, but a mass of misshapen tree trunks, as if drawn by someone who barely had an inkling what a tree was.

Above your heads is only bright white light, with black lines running accross it randomly.

A tug on your arm from Sakura, and you follow her eyes to the center of the Chamber.

In the middle of it all, there's a dais, and in that dais, a huge, trembling white figure.

Or rather, a huge, gargantuan figure covered in white sheets, like a child hiding under their covers.

A rush of excitement sweeps through you.

You smile and step closer to the Witch, ignoring the look Sakura throws you.

A SCREECH hits you like a physical wave of sound-

A mass of arms rips its way from the witch-

"Fuck! Get back!"

You move forward, sidestepping a clawed hand bigger wider than your torso, a half spin with your arm extended bringing a wave to water to push another one away, you jump over the next two whipping fists and-

"Agh-"

A thumb rams into your gut and sends you flying.

"Akiko!" Sakura yells. You spare a glance to see her chopping gigantic fingers.

The Witch screams in agony as you land on your feet and throw yourself back against it.

A hand tries to grab you-

You land on top of it and jump high, your element trailing behind you.

Half a dozen grasping limbs following after you, you reach the apex of your jump.

You hang there for a second, your fist raised high.

You punch down, and the mass of water drops as a solid block to hammer away the stretching limbs and pummel the Witch.

The shifting white mass screeches once more as the water crushes it, its arms flailing around wildly.

You have a moment to smile to yourself before something cracks behind you.

You turn to look up as you fall down, to find the hot-red cracked ceiling crumbling away.

The Sun glares down on you.

You burn.

You call back your water to you to shield you from the searing white light- your eyes burn, your arms being cooked to protect them-

Vww-vwwp!

Protecting arms enfold you for a moment-

Your butt hits the wooden floor as Sakura dumps you.

You turn to glare-

A SLAP! turns your head back around.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!" Sakura grabs you by you collar.

A SCREECH interrupts, you both look back towards the Witch, the mass of gigantic arms flailing, the white covers burning under a pillar of incandescent white light.

Sakura points at the burning Witch with her off hand as she turns back to you.

"What the fuck! You see that fucking thing?! That fucking Witch getting cooked by its own familiar?! YOU WERE THERE! YOU ALMOST GOT COOKED ALIVE, AKIKO!"

Her yells seem louder than the Witches' continued screaming.

"You were doing well until we got here!" your friend keeps ranting, her eyes open wide, almost maniacally. "Then you went and jumped the fucking Witch like a fucking newbie! Did you ever notice you lost most of your fucking water in the fight?! Why'd you fucking jump in like you...!"

She stops.

Sakura leans away from you.

Her brown eyes look at you in accusation.

You look away.

"You fucking-"

A sudden SCREAM brings you both to your knees, clutching at your ears.

The Witch?

You look at it, the arms blackened, the sheets long burned away, revealing a mass of burning hair and eyes.

But the syren's scream comes from everywhere and it doesn't stop and it's inside your head, your head's going to explode and everything's white-

Vwwp.

Sakura's sword's sticking from an huge eyeball-

Vwwp- two arms sliced away- vwwp- another eye slashed- vwwp- bloody finger chopped loose- vwwp- a jump and-

The Witch is sliced clean in half.

Vwwp.

Sakura's at your side once more, breathing harshly, her skin reddened as you imagine your own is.

She presses a Grief Seed to her Gem as the wailing scream dwindles. The Witch whimpers before reality starts to unfold.

The monster collapses into itself, its arms sucked in, before the floor and walls themselves are dismantled and absorbed. The shining sun dims, and falls, a hateful eye glaring at you before vanishing into the vortex.

A whirlwind of ash and sand and blackened dirt and streams of fire follow, all of it passing you by harmlessly, gathering together into a single Grief Seed.

The Seed clackers on the asphalt, and you're back outside.

You're glad you're sitting down as Sakura collapses beside you.

You both take a few moments to catch your breath, watching each other.

There's... a lot of things you want to say.

"... Thanks."

Sakura scowls.

You hold her gaze for a minute... and her scowl turns into a miserable, hurt look.

"Don't fucking do that again."

You look away.

Slowly, you nod, more to yourself than to her.

Sighing, you stand up, pick up the Grief Seed, and walk back to offer Sakura your hand.

"Come on," you say as she takes it, "we've got a date with some fried chicken."

"... I'm not teleporting us back," Sakura says as she leaps up onto a rooftop.

You follow after her, feeling better than you have in a long time.

Highway 17 pt. 30
You shouldn't entirely be surprised by these half-tempting, horribly pragmatic ideas from Niko any more. And that's the thing. Part of you is revolted by the notion, but another part of you recognises the sheer pragmatic use something like that could be.

But then again.

This is not who you are.

"Maybe as a therapy tool," you say finally. "It's not... It's not a good solution to imprison her with that. If she's willing... yeah, maybe it could be useful."

"Losing your memory sounds awful," Sayaka says, shuddering.

"Speaking as someone with amnesia-" probably, maybe sort-of, you amend mentally, "-I have to agree."

"It's not like that," Niko says, shaking her head. "It's more like very small tweaks, like... perception filters. It's not that different from what Kyuubey does, to cover up our existence. And anyway, if you leave the area of effect, it wears off instantly."

"Last resort, at best," you say with a firm nod. "It's... it's a better last resort than knocking out Anri, I think. I... modifying someone's memory, whatever way it is, isn't something I'm really confident with, and I wouldn't be able to really try and help her through her issues if we did this. So it's a very, very last resort."

"I understand," Niko says, nodding.

You wonder for a moment whether she's feeling useless, what with the ideas she's offering... But then again, she doesn't seem that disappointed. Thoughtful, but not disappointed. Really, if you had to guess, she just prefers to simply throw herself into her work and keep busy. Maybe. That's for Kazumi to keep an eye on, though.

Kazumi herself is cuddled up against Niko, chin propped on her shoulder as Niko pops the back off the device. Crimson eyes flick up to you, curious and warm.

"Is there anything else, Sabrina?" Kazumi asks.

"Mami, Sayaka?" you ask in turn, smiling at your friends.

"I got nothing," Sayaka says, shrugging.

"I don't think so," Mami says.

"Then no, I... guess we're out of things," you admit. A flick of thought generates benches out of Grief for Mami and Sayaka and yourself, and you plop down on yours. Mami beams and claims her place right next to you.

"Then we just have to wait," Kazumi says, glancing at the empty blackness of the privacy sphere. "And hope that Miss Oriko manages to pull off something."

"Mm," you agree, glancing at Sayaka as she sits down. "I have faith in her. In the meantime, we'll leave you to it for a few moments - going up!"

Sayaka squawks, clutching at her bench as the three of you rocket straight up, benches soaring upwards until you've cleared the roof by a good twenty meters. She clutches at her chest, glaring pointedly at you.

"Oh, don't be like that," you say, grinning and waving at the Pleiades Saints. "I just wanted to give them some privacy, and have our own conversation. And besides, Mami wasn't bothered, right?"

"Nuh-uh," Mami mutters, happily cuddled up against your side.

"Yuh-huh," Sayaka snorts, rolling her eyes. "That doesn't count. What's up?"

"Well, so... I just want to get everyone on the same page, honestly," you say, waving your hands in the cool, crisp air winding around you. "I mean... we're all a team, yeah? And, well, what do you want to do today?"

"Eh?" Sayaka asks, kicking her feet idly.

"Well, it's, uh..." You check your phone. "It's nine fifty. You could still conceivably tag back into school, switching with your clone. And Mami-" You give her a warm smile. "You've missed half a day of school already. It's your choice, do you want to go back when we return?"

"I- I should." Mami bites her lip, curling up against your side.

"You don't have to if you don't want to," you say, wrapping your arm around Mami and giving her a smile. "Same for you, Sayaka, though I warn you that the rest of the day probably isn't going to be anywhere as exciting as this. Nadia's arriving soon, so I'll be settling the Shiogama girls in and all... oh, yes! Enchantment practice this evening."

"Right, right," Sayaka says, scowling thoughtfully. "Honestly, I kinda want to meet them, but I can do that after school."

"I... I should go back too, then," Mami says, swallowing.

"That's fine," you say, smiling warmly at her. You lean over and remove her beret to press a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "Then I'll still come and meet you for lunch, of course. I'll make something! Or maybe buy something, depending on how much time the Shiogama girls take. Hm. I'd really rather cook for you, though."

"Alright," Mami whispers, nestling a little closer. You squeeze her gently.

"I'm keeping this, by the way," you say, raising your free arm so that she can see the loop of golden ribbon around your wrist. It's the same hand as the Grief ring that you never took off, glinting around your finger. Which is still distinctly not corroded off.

"Mm?" Mami asks, and blushes when she sees what you mean. "Oh."

Sayaka shoots you a grin and a roll of her eyes, leaning backwards with nary a care for the drop below her. Then again, magical girl.

"So anyway!" you say, lowering your arm. "Anri. I'm... well, I've got a few goals. One, make sure she doesn't cause more trouble, to the Pleiades Saints or to us. To that end, I'm planning on hiring the Fukushima girls, since they're known to be reliable and for hire."

"And paying with a Clear Seed?" Sayaka guesses, raising her eyebrows at you.

"If they'll accept it!" you agree cheerfully. "If they insist on regular Grief Seeds, guess it's time for hunting. Second thing for Anri is... well, I'm planning to try and rehabilitate her. Or find someone who can, maybe, I know I'm not exactly the best person to do that. I don't intend to just leave her under lockdown indefinitely, is what I'm getting at."

"I think you could do it, Sabrina," Mami says. "But... it might be better to delegate because we're so busy these days."

"Mm," you say noncommittally.

"Yeah, well..." Sayaka says, waving her hand. "Are you going to look for, what, a magical girl therapist or something?"

"There's got to be one out there somewhere!" you say, grinning. "Failing that, I think just having someone to try and talk to her would be useful. Or, and here's a thought... maybe 'just' a therapist. I mean, I demonstrate magic, read them in, and then brief them. We're still human, after all."

"Ehhhh, sounds good to me," Sayaka says.

"I think as long as you try, it'll do good," Mami says warmly.

"By the way, just so we're clear," Sayaka says, frowning suddenly. "Niko's idea earlier. She means... taking away Anri's Soul Gem, right?"

"Yep," you say. "And then using magic to lock it down."

Sayaka grimaces and falls silent.

"Yep," you repeat. "It's an ugly solution. I'm very, very reluctant to consider it at all, but... if one day I should run into the magical girl equivalent of Luis Garavito or Ted Bundy or Yoshio Kodaira or something... I don't know, maybe that kind of person simply doesn't get contracted, but I just don't know for sure."

"Yeah," Sayaka says, looking faintly ill. "Yeah, maybe."

"Sorry," you say, sighing. "Unpleasant thought, I know."

"Nah, nah," Sayaka says.

The conversation lapses for a while.

"Sabrina?" Mami murmurs, tilting her head to look up at you. "Maybe... maybe I could stay with you until lunch? Then I can rejoin the afternoon classes?"

"If you want," you say, giving her a reassuring smile. "Mami, you should do what you want to. I'm always glad to have you along, and it'd be good for you to meet the Shiogama girls right off the bat, but if you need to go to school? That's fine too."

"Alright," Mami says, nodding.

You eye the beret you'd taken from Mami for a second before plopping it on top of your own head. Sayaka rolls her eyes at you, propping up one leg on the Grief bench and kicking her foot out to balance as she leans over backwards, nearly horizontal.

Your senses twinge, and you look over just in time to spot Oriko leaving the privacy sphere, and the Pleiades starting to gather. Well, that's your cue. Your descent is a lot more sedate, giving Sayaka enough time to backflip off the bench and drop into an effortless three-point landing.

The jerk.

"Anri has agreed to be brought to Mitakihara," Oriko announces to the rooftop at large.

"Oh, thank goodness," Kazumi says, tension draining from her shoulders. She walks up to Oriko, extending her hand. "Thank you for your work, Miss Oriko."

"It was... not precisely a pleasure, but I am glad to help," Oriko says, nodding and shaking Kazumi's hand.

Kazumi beams, bouncing away from Oriko as the rest of the Pleiades crowd around Oriko, thanking the seer. Kazumi, on the other hand, bounds over to you, beaming from ear to ear. "Thank you, Mami, Sabrina, Sayaka, for coming over to help. We couldn't have resolved this entire thing so easily ourselves."

"Considering it was partly my fault that this entire thing started, I couldn't do any less," you say, smiling. "And it's not like you girls didn't do anything, either, we all worked together to get this done, right?"

"Oh psht, I wanted to visit my old sempai," Kazumi says, grinning at Mami. "Speaking of, I'd love to visit again, without the crisis this time."

"I- we would be glad to have you," Mami says, her smile just a little watery.

"Yeah!" Sayaka says. "It'd be fun!"

Kazumi nods, pleased. Really, what is up with her mood swings? You've really got to wonder whether it's magical, considering how she was able to simply disguise her despair in the elsewhen that never will be.

"You have to go now, right?" Kazumi asks.

"We do," Mami says, nodding firmly. "We have refugees travelling to Mitakihara, and they're arriving soon."

"Gotcha," Kazumi says with a pout. She flicks a glance to Oriko, who's making her way over. "Well... I suppose this is goodbye for now, then. Stay in touch, ok?"

"I- I will," Mami says, swallowing. "I will."

Kazumi grins, and lunges forward to throw her arms around Mami and you - and you're promptly inundated with the rest of the Pleiades, who crush Sayaka and Oriko into the giant group hug.

"Oh, one moment," you say, giving Mami a quick, reassuring smile and disentangling yourself from the hug. You hurry over to the corner of the roof to grab the Kure's shopping. "Let's not forget these."

"Indeed," Oriko says drily, following you. "I shall collect Kirika and Anri."

You exchange farewells with the Pleiades, taking a moment to praise everyone for their contributions today as Oriko disappears into the privacy sphere and re-emerges with Anri in tow, Kirika following with a sharp grin on her face.

Anri, in all her ridiculously skimpy fuschia glory, simply stands and glares daggers at everyone. She doesn't bother to hide the raw, seething hatred on her face, the Pleiades almost flinching back from the look. Mirai glares right back, as does Umika.

You step between them, meeting Anri's eyes calmly. "Airi Anri," you say. "You agree to be detained in Mitakihara?"

"Yes," she bites out, lips barely moving. "Get me away from these murderers."

... oof. You can sense the anger catching like a fire behind your back, the Pleiades all listening close.

"Riiight," you say loudly, raising a hand. Grief sweeps in, seemingly-empty air fading to deep purple in whirling eddies. You make it theatrical and flashy, rippling tendrils of Grief swirling into a giant disc to form your Mobile Oppression Fortress.

Better that attention be focused on you than anyone else. Kirika jabbing Anri in the back is... appreciated, though.

"Alright. All aboard," you say, waving your friends -and Anri- up.

You're the last to mount up, giving Kazumi a little wave before stepping up to the disc. You pass the shopping bags to Kirika, before taking your seat beside Mami. Well, between Sayaka and Mami, but really. Beside Mami. Anri's seated at the back, the greasy touch of Kirika's anti-magic bracelet still hanging around her wrist. And if you concentrate the Grief fog around her just a touch denser, well, no one would even notice enough to call you out on it but Mami.

It might be better to restrain her, but you've got Mami and Kirika here with you. And you've got your metaphorical eye on her, too, the Grief fog layered close around her body to watch her movements.

"Right. Next stop, Mitakihara City!" you call loudly, lifting the fortress into the air. Grief bleeds out of the air, forming a shuttered windshield you'll grow to include a roof and convert to glass as soon as you have a moment.

It's an awkward, quiet flight out of Asunaro, especially as you dip low to buzz and junkyard and snatch a piece of rebar from the ground. You don't bring it up to eyelevel, but rather trail it far behind you. Grief shaves a small, coin-shaped piece of steel from the end, which you convey up to Kirika.

"Hey, Kirika?" you speak into her mind, dangling the steel shard in front of her. "Could you apply your anti-magic enchantment to this? I'm going to make something more permanent for Anri."

"Can do!" Kirika chirps, taking it from the air.

"Thanks," you say, and expand the conversation to Oriko. "So here's something interesting I discovered recently, and... hm. Right, before I share, I'm gonna have to ask for you to not try this right now?"

"Of course," Oriko says.

"Mmm," you say. A nice, somewhat fashionable bracelet, you think. And to that end, you shave the rust from the rebar and start moulding. "So - if you channel magic into something belonging to someone else, you wind up... not quite sharing your emotions with them, but you get a feel of them. It's... it's hard to describe, but you just get a feel of them."

"I see," Kirika says, sounding very interested.

"Yep," you say, tilting your head far enough to give her a grin. "Just a fun tidbit I found recently."

"Appreciated~" Kirika says.

You're well past the outskirts of Asunaro now, and so you start to pour on the speed, countryside and farmland roaring past below you in an accelerating blur. You continue to craft, and think.

The rebar you pare to size with Grief, smoothing it into a rounded strip curled into an open C-shape. You carve a coin-shaped depression into its underside, with flaps to seal an enchanted disc into. Tough enough to be nearly impossible for simple magical girl strength to bend, but more than yielding under the irresistible pressure of your Grief.

Speaking of Grief... you kind of want to check on Aurora. It seems like Clear Seeds are quiescent, with the notable exception of, well, Aurora. Could be worth checking on.

"Oh, by the way, Oriko," you continue. "Could I swap the Clear Seed out for another one later? I wanna check something."

"Certainly," Oriko says. You can feel her slow, nonplussed blink.

And as for what to do with Oriko and Kirika... you said you'd see about loosening the restrictions on them, but the hard part is convincing Homura and Sayaka. Both of whom have legitimate grievances against them, but they've been good. You don't want to trap them in their house indefinitely.

"They are here. I'm meeting them now." Homura's voice.

Well, speak of the devil. Not that you think she's the devil, probably not. If anything, she might be Homulily de-Witched. "We're on our way back," you respond. "Be there soon!"

"Noted," Homura says, and ends the call and leaving you with your thoughts and the howling wind rushing past your mobile oppression fortress.

There's perhaps a solution, or a way to get at a solution. "Mami?" you say. You'd thought about including Oriko and Kirika in the discussion, but it might be a bit rude to be talking about them like that to their faces.

"Yes, Sabrina?" Mami asks.

"So... I want to lessen Oriko and Kirika's restrictions somewhat. They've been more than helpful, and Oriko in particular worked wonders today," you say, motioning at Anri, who remains quiet and seething at the back of your flight disc. You add to Mami alone, "They've been nothing but well behaved."

"Are you sure that's a good idea, Sabrina?" Mami asks, giving you a worried frown. "I don't mean that as a slight to them - I... agree that they've been helpful. I'm worried about Sayaka and Homura's responses."

"Yeah, well, that's what I'm trying to figure out," you say. "I was wondering if you had any ideas?"

"I... don't understand Homura that well," Mami says quietly. "Perhaps you could convince her that the Kures are useful if allowed to roam?"

"Perhaps, but... Homura's problems run deeper than that," you say.

"Mm," Mami suggests, looking thoughtful. "Sayaka... you could say, truthfully, that the Kures are working to atone. I think that would help."

"Agreed," you say. "That could work."

"Do you have any ideas?" Mami asks, smiling faintly at you. "I could be a sounding board?"

I wonder if it would be right to talk with Mami about our relationship with Homura, if it wouldn't be a breach of trust.

I mean talking about why Homura trusts us to the extent she does, how we managed to convince her to let Oriko live... leaving aside Madokami stuff, how Homura puts her faith in us because we get results, and how badly she takes failure from us.

In this vein, while... explaining the fact we left O&K and Anri alone in a Privacy Bubble to let Oriko do our Social for us would be... ahem, the sort of thing we don't look forward to, there is a point to be made that we placed this much trust in Oriko and she did her best to help. So maybe it's OK to extend some more trust to Oriko.

As long as she stays away from Madoka.

"It was... not precisely a pleasure, but I am glad to help," Oriko says, nodding and shaking Kazumi's hand.
Oh, Oriko... Keep it up!

"Maybe as a therapy tool," you say finally. "It's not... It's not a good solution to imprison her with that. If she's willing... yeah, maybe it could be useful."
Maybe we could offer it as a way to stop being imprisoned if it comes to that; we could offer to make her forget about what is making her angery, and then get her to form a different reaction to the idea so that when she gets her memories back she can see how counterproductive it was to her goals.
We should at least vindicate her by thanking her for making the worst case scenario less bad; even if it doesn't make her stop feeling bad it should make her feel good, and that doesn't cost us anything.

I think we should leave O&K in house arrest.

Our theory has been that maybe Oriko is losing her powers because she's stuck at home.
But I think the more accurate theory is that she's losing her powers because she's given up on life (and thus abandoned her Wish).
If we want to get Oriko's powers back, we need to convince her to try to live.

I think the right way to convince Oriko to try to live is to put her house in a permanent nondetection field, to hide her from Feathers.
Then we can say to her: "The reason you could never see yourself in the future is because you were hiding from Feathers in a permanent nondetection field."

"Oh psht, I wanted to visit my old sempai," Kazumi says, grinning at Mami. "Speaking of, I'd love to visit again, without the crisis this time."
[Q] Make sure to schedule next visit for a non-sudden-crisis time!

But I think the more accurate theory is that she's losing her powers because she's given up on life (and thus abandoned her Wish).
I think it's the other way around.

Oriko's powers predicted a 100% chance she would die, no ifs and no buts.

Relying on her powers, keeping her Wish would mean accepting that, accepting that she would die.

And then Oriko's death becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

In order to have a chance to not die, she must reject the idea that she will die for sure, she must reject her Wish.

So basically, Oriko rejection of her Wish is herself telling her Soul/Wish to go fuck itself, she's gonna live through this month.

Kazumi grins, and lunges forward to throw her arms around Mami and you - and you're promptly inundated with the rest of the Pleiades, who crush Sayaka and Oriko into the giant group hug.
Kazumiiiii... Pleiades !

These girls, man. Preempting our hugs, and even getting Oriko (forcibly) involved.

Kazumi's done a good.

EDIT: ... Which means Mami's done a good.

[Q] Hug Mami... more.

Can't we just inform Madoka's parents that Homu's home is close for repairs so we're hoping she willing to take her in for the time being until that day comes?
I mean living in Madoka home, being next to her offers better chance for O & K's freedom of movement plus we could activate an GPS tracking device on their phones so Homu can check every sec of their location.
Sigh honesty I really wish Sabrina be more firm with Homu instead of being a wet noodle with this.

This would be seriously stomping all over Homura's senses of self-reliance and thus, of self-worth.

Also, pushing her to live with Madoka? Do we want to give her a heart attack? :V

And... uh...

*Bops Jrin* :p

"Yuh-huh," Sayaka snorts, rolling her eyes. "That doesn't count. What's up?"
Uh, I believe we are up, silly Sayaka.

Better that attention be focused on you than anyone else. Kirika jabbing Anri in the back is... appreciated, though.
[Kirika +50 Best points!]

You eye the beret you'd taken from Mami for a second before plopping it on top of your own head.
Hwee has a hat!

Hatless Mami and Hatted Sabrina.

Mami is too good for us.

Sigh honesty I really wish Sabrina be more firm with Homu instead of being a wet noodle with this.
To be "firm" with Homura would require that we have some way of making her do what we want. We don't. We have no leverage with which to enforce such an edict. We don't have social power over her (we're not her parent, her commanding officer, her employer or her mentor), we don't have logistical power over her (she's got a Clear Seed and survive without any further cleansing from us for a century if need be), and we don't have physical power over her (she is a fuck of a lot more dangerous than we are). We can't make Homura do anything. We can only convince her to agree to our suggestions.

Wait...

By the transitive property of Done A Good, does that not mean Kyuubey did a Good?

[Q]Hug Kyuubey with grief
-[Q]Tighter.
--[Q]Even tighter.
No, no, that's not how it works. Kyuubey's goal is witching all of us out.

Saying KB did a good is like saying that if a terrorist straps a bomb to you and sets you up to explode in twenty minutes, but you manage to take the bomb off and use it to explode the zombies before they can start the apocalypse, that the terrorist did a good.

KB did not do a good.

KB a worst.

My idea for next actions:

[] Mami
- [] Involving Kirika's parents
- [] Oriko's newly given role
- [] Involving Hitomi's parents

Godwinson's vote is a good start.

[ ] Offer O&K to drop them home with many thanks.

We did wake them up at 4 AM and had them running all over Asunaro.

Actually discussing O&K with Homura and Sayaka can wait. But once we do, we should talk with Homura first, one on one.

[ ] Let Sayaka fly to school. Mami can choose whether she goes.

[ ] Greet the Shiogama girls
-[ ] Be polite, supportive.
-[ ] Show them their house. Promise to show them around later.

[ ] Nadia.
-[ ] Privacy Sphere. Very carefully prod for Witchbomb.
-[ ] If Witchbombed, re-ask about RE: Guarding Anri.
-[ ] Unless plans change, call Fukushima asking for a meeting immediately.

So we've got less than two hours, but if we put on some speed, maybe using Witch stuff to help us travel faster without consequences, we should be able to go to Fukushima, strike a deal about Anri, then come back... Maybe grab some groceries first so we can do some cooking on the way. I mean, what's Grief for if not for cooking, right?

Otherwise... what would we do with Anri? Slap the Anti Magic bracelet on her and... lock her up somewhere so she doesn't cause trouble while we give the Shiogama girls a (flying?!) tour, go cook for Mami and have lunch?

We have not actually contacted Fukushima about wanting to hire them yet, correct? Might want to get that sorted out before we go there and try to dump Anri in their lap. It would be embarrassing to fly all the way there only to find out that they're already on another job or still too traumatized by Sendai to talk to us.

So basically, Oriko rejection of her Wish is herself telling her Soul/Wish to go fuck itself, she's gonna live through this month.

We had this same conversation just after the last update, but everyone ignored my reply.
Here's my citations:

"But it is my right to, if I wanted to," Oriko says, eyes glinting. "It is my right to die in a way that betters the world. This is what my powers showed me, Sabrina. This is what has to be."
She wants to die. She's admitted as much, implicitly.
"Then... Well. Your visions show you what you want," you say. "A way to die meaningfully. But that's not what you Wished for, is it?"

"I am going to die," Oriko snaps, earning her a worried look from Kirika. "And I've told you. I've accepted that."

If you read the linked update, we spend some more time trying to talk her out of it, but we fail.

Okay, so bouncing potential ideas with Mami and dropping everyone off where they want to be followed by meeting the Shiogama girls and getting them settled.

Are we taking Anri with us to the meeting? Or are we dropping her off somewhere for now? Maybe Oriko and Kirka could keep watch on her for now, until we handled things with Nadia and are contacting Fukushima? Or we can take over for Homura and she can watch her during the meeting? I'm leery to leave her alone with someone who hasn't been witchbombed yet.

Rin offered to help us get in contact with and broker a deal with Fukushima if we wanted. Maybe be we could delegate to her? Inform her of the situation and what we're willing to offer?

"It's not like that," Niko says, shaking her head. "It's more like very small tweaks, like... perception filters. It's not that different from what Kyuubey does, to cover up our existence. And anyway, if you leave the area of effect, it wears off instantly."

Its good that she doesn't appear to be too put out by being seen as useless or anything, but....

This explanation. I did specifically ping and suggest that we ask Niko for details on whether it'd be this or pure erasure or re-write , before we leapt to conclusions of her being evulz.

you manage to take the bomb off and use it to explode the zombies before they can start the apocalypse

But Onmur....how were you going to stop the zombie apocalypse if you weren't conveniently provided a bomb? :V It seems inescapable that the terrorist helped to save the world.
