It seems to be a 1e-ism but there's also mention of her son being Karl Franz's heir back in Enemy Within, and since he also has his own kids that seems to me to imply she's older enough that her own kid is already a grown man when Karl Franz's eldest is not old enough that he'd trust in electoral support for them.

So, a kind of obscure aspect of the setting but still far from a one off that every other writer disregarded.
Enemy Within is 1st edition. Also, if my understanding of inheritance is correct, that would imply Franz had no kids at the time, because the Reikland title isn't voted on. It passes by blood, nothing else. It's likely that at the time ('86 to '89) Franz was just not written as having kids yet. Not to mention, her having kids sooner doesn't actually indicate she's older.

Uh yes, that's why I said it was a 1Eism? And her having kids sooner is not PROOF but it is weak evidence.

Now, Karl's older sister on the other hand...
Oh yeah, he has an older sister doesn't he? Forgot about her.
I asked Boney this question before and it unfortunately put to rest any potential heir shenanigans.
Also, does Luitpold have a daughter in the Quest? In canon, Karl Franz apparently has an older sister according to the Wiki as early as 2470, which is when Divided Loyalties begin:

Then again, said hypothetical daughter might have been killed along mother, former Lahmian catspaw Empress?

Butterflied. Mandred is Luitpold's firstborn in quest canon.
If the Lahmian Empress ever birthed a child before her assassination, it would be before her marriage to Luitpold and therefore has no connection to the Imperial dynasty.

So I read some of the recent discussion about Greys. I'd bet you money that the Grey College loves Mathilde, in that she probably makes any of the operations taken in her area extremely easy. She's a super well known Grey (or super well know for a Grey?), and has the rare ability to put up in a straight fight, which affects how she uses stealth and subtlety a lot. Having a known Grey with a huge Witch Hunter Hat, a crawling shadow, and a surprise Greatsword wandering around in the open has got to draw eyes like flies to shit; so distracted are they, that they can't notice all the super subtle Grey Spies and sneaks!

Edit: subtly != Subtlety

And now I've said subtle so many times in my head, I started questioning whether it actually has a 'b' in it, and it sounds wrong when I say it now arrgggg

"Whichever one allows us to represent our employer best."

Seriously, folks, this is a very silly discussion to have. We don't know that we're losing access to the Karaz Ankor Aircorps -- two of the plausible candidates to be employing us for the project are dwarf kings! We know, by word of QM, that we're going to be voting on who we'll be doing Waystones officially "for." Hashing out the details of what flying transportation we might need before we even know if we need new flying transportation is... it's like the inverse of the tendency the thread has to start planning out the lives of chickens before we even know if we have any eggs. It's planning what brand of anti-fox fence to buy before we even know if the henhouse has any predators nearby.
Mathilde has lifetime free gyro rides anyway due to her rep.

Frankly even if we don't do this as Belegar's subordinate, it'd be silly to assume that we wouldn't still get notable support from him. I doubt we'd have a realistic option to do it under a different umbrella otherwise, considering dwarf participation is vital to the project.

Super belated reply, but:
The expedition's landships don't go looking like an actual boat on wheels now do they?
Considering after the expedition they took the wheels off the survivors and put them back in the water, I think they look exactly like actual boats on wheels.
"Me neither," he says with a shrug, "so the steam-wagons are most likely bound to be converted into proper River Monitors when they get back to Karak Kadrin. Ancestors know we need all of those we can get, every shipyard and slipway in the Karaz Ankor has been at capacity ever since they broke ground on the canal project. Doubly so, now that Karak Vlag will need reconnecting." He leafs through the maps once more until he finds one of Kislev.

Sounds like there needs to be more river monitors, we should probably get a few with EIC.

Thinking of things we can actually be confident of needing for the Waystone research, a better understanding of Enchanting seems to be pretty likely to be useful. This is for two reasons:

1) Waystones are magic items that channel enormous amounts of magical energy, possibly past the point where the density results in a qualitative change in behaviour. So are battle magic grade items. Getting taught battle magic grade enchanting might grant some insight.

2) Both elves and dwarves highly value and respect mastery. It seems likely that their real experts are more likely to listen to what she has to say if she's also a true expert.

Now, developing capabilities based on Windherder is also likely to be applicable as the Waystones channel multiple Winds. AV Enchanting may well also be useful here, as that's another example of high energy magic. Not to mention that according to Realms of Sorcery the Waystone network directly drains the outflow from the many small warp rifts that formed at the entrances to the Geomantic Web network, so there's a small chance that the Waystone network could be a source of AV.

Wtf? Empire already builds ships how is that grudge worthy?

I said river monitors. Empire has its own wooden ones. We already got a few for the EIC. The one that is talking about ironclads is somebody else so why are you quoting me?
Sorry, someone else was talking about ironclads and I thought you were too.

I still think that the main gap we have in orthodox Inperial Wizardry that would be relevant to understanding Waystones is going to be Rituals, not Enchantment.

Rituals: used for big, permanent effects, or the Really Big Magics.

Waystones: the biggest magical artefacts around, with similarly huge effects, which we've already seen Mathilde use a Ritual to interact with.

I've been wanting to take the College's Rituals class for a while now, so I'm pretty pleased that we're going to have to take it to do our chosen job properly.

Why would we lose access to the Gyrocopter network? The dwarfs kind of like Mathilde. Just a little. More than anyone except Sigmar. They literally think she's inhumanly awesome. I seriously don't see where the concern we'd ever lose access is coming from, even as a private person.

That aside, we won't be a private person. We might not be working for dwarfs, we would definitly be working with them. So fuel cost and such, if it even comes up, can be booked out of that. Or she could just pay for it, and actually make direct and practical use of the huge amount of cash she keeps getting from the trading company she owns a good chunk of.
