No, let's not go with any bullshit theories here.

I say we just leave and tell the dwarf king what we saw. No spin, no nothing. We tell them everything that happened in this expedition, even the bit where we were "allowed" to go to Chaos Dwarves to look for food.

Some theories posted seem more likely than others likethose that point that:
  • this as some sort of variant of dwarven suicide in body mind and soul
    • from the Corrupted = They all just fell to Chaos and became Defensive Beastmen constantly attacked by the tribes of the Wastes for Chaos Point
    • to the neutral = they suicided by somehow Trapping Morghur with them
      • (possible causes of these start with manic desperation and gets worse from there)
    • To the Tragic = Someone got it right that this is some sort of Beastman (beastdwarf?) Slayers. They fell to chaos and trapped themselves here to forever fight Chaos' forces despite them having fallen to Chaos themselves
    • (tangenially related to above, but also deserves its own slot) maybe to Chaos Undivided or some variant of Raw Chaos. And the Chaos bands here all aim at "conquering" this place and serving it up to their chaos masters (because this could be outside the realms of the 4)
    • To the Accepting but Ignorant = Borek's going straight to Morghul may just be him finally seeing whatever end result happened and that he does not know much of anything either. He could just have been open to accepting anything that happened from Morghul appearing to being transported to the moon and whatever else in between.

Either way, whatever happened here is None of our Business. Sure this could spill into a problem for humanity later, but that isn't exactly anything new to humanity here either.

So I vote to just fuck off and tell everything straight. Let others interpret it how they wish.

Though what to tell to the people in this expedition (Horstman!!) so that they won't fall to chaos is something else entirely.

Okay, one very last thing: have we actually Seen any other beastmen, or just heard them?

Outside of all in-universe considerations, I want to investigate because I as a person am very intrigued by the story laid our in front of us and I really want to read it.

Borek has spent two centuries in Karaz Ankor, and has throught the virtue of his goals, interacted and been observed by many old and powerful Dawi, including Thorek.

On the way here, he has worked closely with Mathilde (and others) who didn't notice a thing.

Borek isn't Chaos.

And frankly, while the other dwarfs might be horrified by the implied ultra-radical methods Karak Dum employed in its defense, Mathilde shouldn't and wouldn't be.

After all, she did similar things herself.
Unfortunately the Cult of Gorlaz is still probably canon, so we have to accept the possibility that Dwarves can fail to notice a Slaaneshi cult right under their noses, even as they acquire more and more mutations.

But it makes a lot more sense that something else is going on with Borek, rather than just assuming that a Greater Daemon with a low threshold for boredom has been spending all their time as Borek and working on this one (admittedly hilarious) trick for 200 years.

Ok, I think what happened is that Morghur was killed by the high elves, and he was reborn. However, this time he was reborn in a dwarf body, as the dwarf version of a turnskin. Normally, he'd be doomed, but the Rites of Valaya were performed in time, which protected him from the mental/spiritual influence of the Chaos Gods, even though his body was still warped.
Could also be the reverse like Mathy's, where a dwarven soul was transplanted onto a champion beastman by Chaos, and Morghur managed to regain some sanity and reconnect with his dwarven roots.
Edit: Eshin'ed with a better post.

In another topic, I wonder if this is in any way connected to the Kurnous mystery happening down south?

There no point in asking the Kurgan tribes since they only here to fight not ask question about this weirdness.
So the best course of options is to send the others on their way home while Mathilde stay and investigate deeper before joining the landship convey later on.
We need to find answers before going home, should be safe enough considering all the weird non-hostile actions from what we seen.

So, less Dhar around Morghur than usual in the Wastes means almost certainly this is not Morghur.
The area around him being static rather than in constant change is another sign.

My working theory would be close to what others have already suggested:
This is not Morghur, this is a Dwarven Runemaster in a cunning runic disguise. Reality shudders because his Wind-repellance has that effect here in the Wastes.
The whole forest and Beastmen is a trick to defend themselves from Chaos without looking like a target that all the nearby chaotic forces would unite against.
They pretend to be a weird but Chaos-aligned phenomenon, so that only a few tribals "test" themselves against their defences, rather than all gathering in an endless storm until the Hold has fallen.

Im not going along with a vote that takes us a single inch further away until we've punched Borek.

It's my one goal.
Just for the record, does it have to have Mathilde punching Borek personally, or would you accept it if it was just a skeleton whose hand was directly controlled by Mathilde?

Asking because I would really like to fulfill this promise whilst keeping a minimum safe distance from the suspected realityfucker.

There's Dhar on and around everything here.
Thats it. Thats the biggest clue there is.

There should be a dbz level of corruption dhar or at the very least Wild wind on this guy.

For all we know this guy is a golem and Karak Dum is beyond it.

Still not 100% sure that this guy is not a threat, so lets arrage the steamwagons on a circle formation and wait/rest for a few hours until Borek returns.

Meanwhile, do we or our guys have magical drone to scout the surrounding place out?

We can have the dragon burn him from afar, but if it turns out to be friendly, this will attract all kind of shit from the surrounding tribesman.

She has never done this. The warp entity got stuck in our trap, but we have never bound even and apparition much less a daemon

Technicalities. She trapped it with a purpose, and then profitted of it.

The Entire Gold Order binds apparattions, and Amber Order is implied to do the same.

Empire has alliance/trade agreements with Araby, and they literally bind daemons. Sorry, djinns.

As you watch reality flinch away from him, Morghur the Shadowgave, immortal demigod of the Beastmen, bellows a warbling prayer to the mountain that has become his Herdstone, and from the trees countless more voices join him.

I don't think this theory is particularly likely, but just out of curiosity:

@BoneyM To Mathilde's windsight, would 'reality flinching away' from Morghur look at all like the winds of magic flinching away from a Runelord, or is it just a turn of prose?

As the demigod bellows once more but shows no sign of approaching, you risk a glance sideways at Borek, who'd become more and more glued to the prow as you grew nearer to his home. You're not sure what you expect - shock? disbelief? despair? But you definitely weren't expecting resignation. "Borek-"

"We did the best we could," he says. "When it comes time to tell the rest of the Karaz Ankor what has become of us, please tell them that as well. May the Ancestors forgive us."

With that, he pulls loose a knot that causes a rope ladder to unfurl and clambers over the guardrail. "Borek?" you ask, trying to process this as the first of the other Dwarves start to spill out of the lower levels, seeking a better view than they could get from what would have to be very crowded gun-ports.

So as to whatever the hell is going up PRECISELY with Karag Dum and the beastmen I've got no frikkin clue.

What we can see though is that Borek is resigned and melancholic about the situation. He knows what is happening but doesn't tell us. Seemingly expecting us to know what happened to them eventually (or that we have the clues to guess) so we could tell Karaz Ankor.

What is telling is what he DIDN'T do:

1. Attack us or show hostility towards us. Cor-Dum also left us alone. For now at least. Plus, the Karak is still sending uncorrupted magic. Unless they knew Karak Vlag had fallen, it seems like they are still trying to do their parts in holding the waystone for Karaz Ankor.

2. Turn to despair (yet?). The way he expected this but didn't go slayer on the spot is telling. At he very least it seems he believes his Karak survived in some form for him to return (and possibly turn slayer in the comfort of his home).

3. Ask the expedition for help. He took 200 years to gather an expedition to reinforce or save his Karak. Now that he arrived, with substential ressources and the opportunity to serve as a contact between Karaz Ankor, the Empire and Karag Dum, he just leaves the expedition without a word.

That and the fact asked the Ancestor to forgive them seems to indicate either he belives that the expedition would not help them or that the expedition's strenght isn't signifiant enough to help his Karak. Well, that or he doesn't want us to sacrifice ourselves for a Karak that is already too far gone.

4. Tell us what the hell is going on. Why? He expects us to know or guess in the end since he wants us to tell Karaz Ankor (also seems he expects us to survive to tell the tale). Is he daring us to follow him to know more?

[ ] THEORY: I don't know what the hell is happening but Borek seemed to still care for what Karaz Ankor thought of him and that what we are seeing is the result of his home trying their best to fufill their duties knowing the rest of dwarves probably wouldn't approve. The Corrupter seemed to recognise Borek as almost kin and hasn't made a move against us. I would like to see if it's possible to know more.
[ ] ACTION: First shout at Borek that he owes us some anwsers. If it doesn't work. Send a volunter to try and do as Borek did to enter the forest and see what happens to that volunter : 1. If the volunter is attacked or mutates turn back. 2. If the volunter is denied access but doesn't mutate or get attacked, try to ask an audience somehow : ask to the beastmen, scream to the forest, creative solutions. If no anwser, turn back. 3. If the volunter is let though unharmed, have him come back do go investigate ourselves.
