So it's definite that Skaven are capable of learning constructive and positive behaviours. I wonder, how would the Loremasters of other Karaks react to that knowledge?

I'm actually wondering if ZL is a number, haha. Or maybe it's not a direct name, but could be a place-name or title or form of address or whatever.

Oh no I wasn't referring to Qrech, I meant how would they react in general.
I'm reasonably sure it's already known to at least some that the Skaven aren't inherently evil- look at Kazador's comments back when we found the rat-mothers. So I don't think it'd really come as a surprise that a Skaven isolated from their toxic culture would show positive changes.

Interesting speculations. Nothing actionable but fascinating nonetheless. Bit odd that they didn't give an opinion on the chaos gods.

So are Hysh elementals not a thing? Or is there some other reason Cython can't hunt and or eat them?

Quirin Waramunt, Qrech to his friends
The thought occurs that he is probably one of the most contented and generally happy Skaven alive. A fine reward for breaking the secret of Queekish.

Oh come on.

[X] Plan to set up EIC gunpowder production in Stirland
K8P has its own sewage that can be turned to productive uses in good time.
Plus K8P really doesn't need more gold. Or won't once the silk weavers get their act together.
Plus II while K8P is incredibly hard to take it isn't that hard to isolate. I would rather not have strategic resource production so far out in the wilderness.

I think this chapter above all shows just how much time has passed. I think it would have been better if Wilhelmina described Mahilde a bit though, either to say just how much she's changed physically, or just how little compared to the time passed.

Anyway, time passing. I think Eike is less slow, and more of a person who just has not gotten practical, no hand holding experience yet.

On the gong farmers, I think k8p related, to make us above reproach, but also to supply k8p's needs for gunpowder. I'm not sure on if we shpupd just straight up sell, or work towards a factory (and the location of said factory is another issue entirely).

Roswita will experience even more good wizard karma muahahaha!
and! it's a convenient dump for the accidental wealth we have! Quick! Before the Bursar finds out!

@BoneyM Great chapter. Lots of world building meat to sink our teeth in. And I also like how some mysteries currently feel like they are quite out of reach, while also allowing clear paths for us to at least scratch at their surface if we really want to.

I did kind of miss Mathilde's perspective in the Qretch section though. It seemed like she pretty much just walked into his cell as an exposition device to let Qretch exposit his ambitions to us, just prodding him a bit to continue. How does she feel about Qretch, his ambitions and his overall situation? How feasible does she think his dreams are? And what kind of image does she project to him in this situation?

Another minor quibble is that I had difficulty telling Mathilde's and Cython's parts of the dialogue apart. But that might be more due to my reading comprehension and the fact that I was reading this chapter at work (very slow day today). I'll probably reread at least that section at home.

Though I also gotta say, I'm not sure about the "No reason to worship the Winds" thing. Like... if the Winds are constant and reliable, then, why wouldn't that be a good reason to worship them? Or is it because, the Winds being what they are, they don't get anything from worship the way Gods do and thus it is pointless to do so? It's basically like a reason to not be religious at all, then. 'Gods aren't worth your worship because they aren't reliable.' 'This isn't worth your worship either, because while it's reliable, it's not a god.'
It's more the other way around. Gods are unreliable because they are a bit like people. But they do in fact give people stuff. And one of the things they want in return is worship.
Winds can be fickle too, but they don't want worship, don't care about someone "using" their power through technique and trickery instead of pleas and bargaining, and generally behave more like a motivated force of nature than a disembodied and powerful patron.
Oh. Oh wow. I was certain that it was Ishernos, the first deity of the Old Faith.
But the Horned Rat?
Well, it could still be Ishernos, but the tidbit about the fall is disqueting.
What happened to Ishernos according to canon?

...
Hm.

This sort of... Sounds like an allegory for a population explosion of Gods with the coming of the Aethyr? That is, it's a myth, but it also could map onto how in Warhammer's history you had gods and cults rising and falling and spreading and changing and so on too.
I'd think it's actually about the loss of faith, if it maps onto real world events. So the Elves start out believing all these things are caused by gods, but s their knowledge of science and such grows, they think less of it is, and so the gods stop being worshipped and are destroyed.

The name Ishernos sounds like Isha and Kurnous in one very strange coat tbh.

If Mathilde knew Classical, she'd probably have a better chance at figuring out what it means. IIRC, Classical is what Tylos would have spoken and written in. I think it's unlikely to be a number though, as I'd be very surprised if there are no numbers at all on the coin, for dating.

Actually, it might be the equivalent of the Roman "SC" which was just them getting into fiat currency. Which would be a cool tidbit, although not world shaking.

and there's rumours that Roswita fill finally finish it this coming spring
Typo: fill -> will
Any place that needs gunnery school will definitely need gunpowder no?
[X] Sell the niter to Zhufbar
[X] Sell the niter to Karak Eight Peaks
[X] Plan to set up EIC gunpowder production in Karak Eight Peaks

Any of these work.

Just want to point out, setting up a K8P factory won't be as impressive as you might hope per Boney's statement that it'll produce human-quality gunpowder, because K8P is outsourcing the work to EIC.

If we want to get highest standard Dwarven quality, it's better to let Gotri work on it and we can chip in, they don't need us to help as much as Stirland do with the new Repeater guns.

Also it'd be setting up a long-distance supply chain since we're shipping from Stirland to K8P, and knowing how unstable the Border Princes and nearby Badlands can be, it's generally not a good idea for long-term security with strategic resource production.
EIC making a K8P factory will be the same quality, selling it to K8P will mean Gotri will put together a factory for full Dwarf-quality firepower.

To be honest, if we're talking about above reproach behavior, we should invest the Niter Production into Stirland, because we kinda co-opted it from under Roswita's nose during the transition. The Gong Farmers were initially paired with the Stirland Watch iirc, and we separated them when we got fired as Spymaster.

Also our alleged loyalties are supposed to be to the Empire first, so it wouldn't look out of place. K8P has plenty of options for producing their own gunpowder, Stirland less so.

I think the issue with sneaking into a Skaven location is that if you successfully appear as one of them, it only marginally decreases the chances of being stabbed.
It might even have the opposite effect after all manthings are enemies, food and slaves, and fellow skaven are also all those things AND competition (so best to stab them twice)

Yeah. That was a thing going through my head even as I said that. "But hmm, no, that's probably not right -- it'd probably have a date somewhere. I guess it's just because I'm thinking of Roman numerals that I'm thinking this."

Maybe? Not sure what the Roman SC thing is, but neat if true.

I had a lot more planned before I realized what Qrech would want, and that drastically shortened what that interaction was going to be. And I deliberately avoided giving a 'canon' answer for how to feel about him.

I based Tylos' coins on early Greek ones, which didn't seem to ever have more than a few letters. From my (admittedly brief) research, it seems like dates on coins didn't really become a thing until cast coinage, and Tylos' coins are hammered.

Split up into Taal (male, winter and summer) and Rhya (female, spring and autumn), which is why the two of them are still worshipped almost exclusively together. Some scholars also seem to think that Ulric was part of Ishernos as well (perhaps the male winter face?), explaining why Ishernos symbol was the triskele. Some still worship Ishernos today, though.

What if Mathilde bury the gold when it accumulates and tell Roswita were it is in case of emergancy?

Or we melt it down and give Roswita a really neat New floor surprise! :V

Vertical integration of Stirlands Firearm production is a go! Cut that overhead Roswita!

K8P could probably use a production facility too, cuts out the ability for piracy to distribute high-quality Gunpowder to people we don't like.
